A certain trend in recent Romanian cinema has been widely criticized for its outrageously performative, perfectly-arranged storylines. Emanuel Parvu’s film is no exception. It has to be said, however, that the rigidity of the narrative, conceived as a formidable circulation of instructions and actions put in place by the members of the village to silence an aggression, is quite effective in transcribing the institutionalized making of silence. But it’s in the fate and treatment of the young victim that Parvu fails to transcend the subject of the film. Without totally ignoring him, the director chooses at times to refocus on the powerless figure at the heart of this terrible machination.
Keeping its distances, the camera captures his silence without seemingly every getting anything out of it. In its desire to film ideas rather than people, Parvu’s subject is nothing more than a crude demonstration.
