“Horizon”, Kevin Costner is back with an epic western

The project of a lifetime, brought to fruition with personal funds, in Coppola-esque fasgion,  Horizon: an American Saga is the first stone in what promises to be a gigantic epic of pre- and post-Secession America, like Ford and Hathaway’s How the West Was Won. Its first act depicts an extreme West populated by pioneers that are less prey to the winds of history than to the basic principles of survival and Apache attacks.

Articulating a vast collection of narrative threads, Costner patiently moves his pawns, developing stories that seem their own and, at the end of these three hours, have barely come together. It’s a painstaking task, resistant to the laws of dramatic efficiency at all costs, and attentive to an authentic pull of romance that can sometimes lose us – but what a pleasure it is for a film that intends to be popular to explain itself so little – and stray into a few clichés from another era, but is convincing in its scope and acuteness: we’ll gladly take another ten hours.
