Pressure grows for Gaza ceasefire as Israel-Hamas conflict enters fifth week

The US and its Arab allies appeared divided after meeting between regional foreign ministers and secretary of state Antony BlinkenThe United States and its Arab allies appeared divided over calls for a ceasefire in Israel’s military offensive against Hamas, as the US pushed for a more temporary pause in fighting amid growing global anger over the rising death toll among Palestinian civilians in the Gaza Strip. On Saturday, several Middle East foreign ministers urged the US to persuade Israel to agree to a ceasefire in a meeting with the secretary of state, Antony Blinken. The top US diplomat, however, dismissed the idea, saying such a halt would only benefit Hamas, allowing the militant organisation to regroup and attack again. Continue reading…

Australia news live: unpredictable conditions hamper WA firefighting efforts; interest rate rise tipped for Cup Day

RBA has left cash rate on hold for four months while warning it might need to keep pushing up interest rates if still-high inflation does not fall. Follow the day’s news updates liveGet our morning and afternoon news emails, free app or daily news podcastTreasurer Jim Chalmers says the prime minister’s official visit to China is not without challenges but is critical to a “prosperous relationship” between the two countries. It’s the first official visit by a prime minister into China since 2016 and I think it recognises that this – a stable relationship – is in the interests of both countries. Now, we are clear-eyed about the complexities and the challenges of managing this relationship. But we give ourselves the best chance of prospering together if we engage with one another. And we’ve already seen some of the fruits of that effort – something like 95% of the trade restrictions by dollar value have been lifted. That’s good for our businesses, our exporters, and our workers. And that’s why it’s so important that this engagement has been happening for some time and why it’s so important that this official visit is taking place this week.I think this is a sort of rapprochement based on realism. As [Katharine Murphy] was saying earlier, from China’s point of view, they haven’t changed their long-term strategic or economic goals. And neither have we changed our strategic allegiances. But it suits both sides for lots of reasons to get the trade relationship flowing again, to get the economic relationship flowing again, and to be talking again. And that’s what this visit is going to achieve. Continue reading…

Australia news live: Erin Patterson fronts court on mushroom murder charges; shareholder revolt expected at Qantas AGM

I was concerned that innocent Palestinian families would bear the brunt and the heaviest burden, in terms of the type of action that was being foreshadowed.I think the world, the international community, is watching very closely. I have said previously there has to be a much more strategic, precise way to hold Hamas to account. Israel’s actions do matter, in terms of the way in which they conduct these military operations, and I think a lot of us are deeply concerned about the impact, not only on innocent Palestinians but particularly kids. Rishi Sunak says people should not be ‘alarmist’ about AI while admitting it could be as dangerous nuclear war – UK politics live

Prime minister due to wrap up AI safety summit at Bletchley Park as Labour calls for urgent regulationA delegation of current and recently resigned Labour councillors, including the former and acting Oxford CLP chair, are to visit Westminster this afternoon to force a meeting with Keir Starmer’s office. The delegation will be welcomed by John McDonnell. Caroline Raine, the acting chair of the Oxford and District Labour party, is heading the delegation. Raine became chair after the former post holder, Jabu Nala-Hartley, quit the party, citing Starmer’s “refusal to condemn collective punishment of Palestinians”.I would like to again emphasise that we have made arrangements to come to Westminster tomorrow afternoon. We expect to be seen by someone from LOTO [the leader of the opposition’s office] between 2.30 and 4pm please. We gave notice in good time and it would be very poor practice in a crisis like this for us to be sent away without being heard. We want an Israel where Israelis and Palestinians can live in peace and liberty. By agreeing that the war against Hamas can continue after a humanitarian pause, the Labour party is colluding in the endorsement of war crimes and of breaches of international law.
