A private liberal arts women’s college in Northampton, Massachusetts, is offering a course called, “White Supremacy in the Age of Trump” in the spring, as President-elect Trump returns to the White House.”This course analyzes the history, prevalence and current manifestations of the white supremacist movement by examining ideological components, tactics and strategies, and its relationship to mainstream politics,” the course description says.”Students research and discuss the relationship between white supremacy and white privilege, and explore how to build a human rights movement to counter the white supremacist movement in the U.S. Students develop analytical writing and research skills while engaging in multiple cultural perspectives. The overall goal is to develop the capacity to understand the range of possible responses to white supremacy, both its legal and extralegal forms,” it continues.The four-credit course, offered by the college since 2019, is also available to students at Amherst College, Hampshire College, Mount Holyoke College and the University of Massachusetts Amherst through Massachusetts’ Five College Consortium program.COLLEGE CONSERVATIVE SPEAKS OUT ON THREATS AGAINST TRUMP SUPPORTERS ON CAMPUS: ‘WIDESPREAD PATTERN’In previous years, the course syllabus included required readings from “antiracist” academics, Ta-Nehisi Coates and Robin DiAngelo. One paper assignment asked students to answer the question, “How did the ideology of white supremacy help elect Donald Trump and what did the 2016 election teach us?” and “Why is liberal democracy jeopardized by white supremacy?”The course has been taught since 2019 by Loretta J. Ross, a visiting associate professor at Smith College. Ross, a social justice activist who was once the school’s “Activist-in-Residence,” has “dedicated many years to advocating for women’s rights and reproductive justice,” and is credited with helping coin the phrase, “reproductive justice,” according to the National Women’s History Museum.Ross has previously blamed Trump’s 2016 election on backlash to the civil rights movement.”What we are witnessing is what happened after the success of the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s. The people who felt they had lost control of this democracy and their determination to protect white privilege and white supremacy developed a multi-decade plan to regain power,” she wrote in a 2017 post on her website.”To implement this plan, they pulled together not only people who had been resistant to the civil rights movement, the diehard segregationists, but they also thought that they needed to foment culture wars against LGBT rights, women’s rights, abortion rights, immigrants, workers’ rights, environmental justice. There was even baby food.Before the line opened, the volunteers gathered around a pastor who led them in prayer. The rate of violent crime in Washington, D.C., has hit a 30-year low, according to data from the U.S. Attorney’s Office.Violent crime in the district has declined 35% year-over-year, Mathew M. Graves, U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, said Friday. There were 3,388 incidents so far in 2024, compared to 5,215 incidents in 2023.Crimes that saw significant drops this year included homicide down 30%, sexual abuse down 22%, assault with a dangerous weapon down 27%, robbery down 8% and burglary down 8%.”There’s no doubt from my perspective, the most impactful thing we do when it comes to violent crime is really targeting drivers of gun violence,” Graves said, according to Fox 5 DC. “More importantly, figuring out in our community…who’s really driving violence and holding them accountable to some crimes, so you can take them off the street before they commit the next crime.”MAN ARRESTED ON DC METROBUS FOR FARE EVASION FOUND CARRYING LOADED SHOTGUN: POLICEGraves said data shows the drivers of violent crime include “several hundred individuals across the city.””Many of them, affiliated with … what we in the District call ‘crews;’ organizations of individuals usually based in the neighborhood or block where they grow up engaged in a bunch of different crimes,” he said.”Their activities, in some ways, are directly engaged in violence. In other instances, the activities they’re engaging in, fueling open-air drug markets, are magnets for violence,” he added. “So, going after those individuals who really account for an outside portion of crimes of violence is an incredibly effective strategy for bringing the numbers down.”Graves said prosecution is not the only way to reduce crime.”These are often deeply embedded issues that have drivers based in poverty, lack of services, health issues, education issues,” he said. “We can influence these numbers. We can take violence off the street. We can try to deter other people from being drivers of gun violence. The stopgap bill is expected to be passed in the Senate in the coming hours. The partial shutdown comes only days before Christmas and New Year’s. As of Thursday, the U.S. national debt was at $36,167,604,149,955.61 and was continuing to climb rapidly. During a partial government shutdown, federal agencies and non-essential services are stopped, but some functions that are considered “essential” will continue. Certain national security functions, such as border patrol, law enforcement and disaster response, will remain active during the shutdown. However, because the Senate is expected to move the bill forward imminently, the disruption to government function will be minimal, if at all noticeable.An original agreement on a short-term spending bill was released earlier in the week, totaling 1,547-pages and including a number of policy provisions and disaster aid. TOP SENATE DEMS POUR COLD WATER ON LATEST GOP SPENDING BILL PLANS: ‘READY TO STAY’ THROUGH CHRISTMASBut soon after its release, billionaire Elon Musk and other conservative critics publicly blasted the measure, ultimately resulting in it being condemned by President-elect Donald Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance. The initial spending measure would have extended government funding levels for fiscal year 2024 through March 14 and provide over $100 billion in disaster aid for those affected by storms Helene and Milton in the U.S. Southeast earlier this year. Senators voted to pass a new version of a stopgap spending bill early Saturday morning after the midnight deadline for a partial government shutdown came and went.The Senate advanced the third version of a short-term spending bill by 85 to 11, and it will now head to President Biden’s desk, who has already signaled that he will sign it. An original agreement on a short-term spending bill was released earlier in the week, totaling 1,547-pages and including a number of policy provisions and disaster aid. But soon after its release, billionaire Elon Musk and other conservative critics publicly blasted the measure, ultimately resulting in it being condemned by President-elect Donald Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance. SENATE DEMS RAIL AGAINST ‘SHADOW SPEAKER’ BILLIONAIRE ELON MUSK: ‘NOT ELECTED TO ANYTHING'”Republicans must GET SMART and TOUGH. A document emphasized the importance of maintaining the ability for extended stays in orbit after the International Space Station is retired.”NASA’s Low Earth Orbit Microgravity Strategy will guide the agency toward the next generation of continuous human presence in orbit, enable greater economic growth, and maintain international partnerships,” the document stated.The commitment comes amid questions of whether the new space stations will be ready to go. What does that mean? Is it continuous heartbeat or continuous capability? While we kind of originally hoped that this would just sort of emerge from this process, we’re still having conversations about that and understanding it,” Melroy said at the International Astronautical Congress in October.NASA’s finalized strategy took into account concerns from commercial and international partners over what it would mean to lose the ISS without a commercial station ready to go.”Almost all of our industry partners agreed. Continuous presence is continuous heartbeat. And so that’s where we stand,” Melroy said. “I think this continuous presence, it’s leadership. Today, the United States leads in human spaceflight. The only other space station that will be in orbit when ISS de-orbits, if we don’t bring a commercial destination up in time, will be the Chinese space station. Axiom signed an agreement with NASA in 2020. The agency awarded contracts to Nanoracks, now part of Voyager Space, and Blue Origin in 2021.”We’ve had some challenges, to be perfectly honest with you. The budget caps that were a deal that was cut between the White House and Congress for fiscal year (2024 and 2025) have left us without as much investment. So, what we do is we co-invest with our commercial partners to do the development. I think we’re still able to make it happen before the end of 2030, though, to get a commercial space station up and running so that we have a continuous heartbeat of American astronauts on orbit,” Melroy said.Voyager says it is not behind in the development process and is still planning to launch their starship space station in 2028.”We’re not asking for more money. We’re going ahead. We’re ready to replace the International Space Station,” Manber said. “Everyone knows SpaceX, but there’s hundreds of companies that have created the space economy. And if we lose permanent presence, you lose that supply chain.”Additional funds have been provided for the three companies since the initial space station contracts. A second round of funding could be crucial for some projects. NASA could also award funding for new space station proposals. One prospect is Long Beach, California’s Vast Space. The company recently unveiled concepts for its Haven modules. It plans to launch the Haven-1 as soon as next year.”We absolutely think competition is critical. This is a development project. It’s challenging. It was hard to build the space station. We’re asking our commercial partners to step up and do this themselves with some help from us. We think it’s really important that we carry as many options going forward to see which one really pans out when we actually get there,” Melroy said.
