NASA surprised to discover ‘dinky’ moon orbiting asteroid in close flyby

NASA surprised to discover 'dinky' moon orbiting asteroid in close flyby

NASA’s Lucy spacecraft, which was launched in October 2021 to research Jupiter’s asteroids, snapped a picture of a smaller asteroid near Mars last week, which presented scientists with a shocking surprise. The asteroid Lucy snapped a picture of is named Dinkinesh, and it turns out the space rock has a dinky moon orbiting it. The Associated Press reported that the discovery was made when Lucy conducted a flyby of Dinkinesh in Mar’s main asteroid belt, nearly 300 million miles away. NASA SPACECRAFT CATCHES ‘EERIE FACE’ ON JUPITER The picture was reportedly taken when Lucy was 270 miles away from Dinkinesh, then sent the data and images back to earth. The findings included Dinkinesh’s size, which was just barely a half-mile across, and its tiny moon, about a tenth-of-a-mile across. The mission to snap pictures of Dinkinesh was a rehearsal for a much bigger mission, which is to look at the mysterious asteroids near Jupiter. NASA PUBLISHES NEVER-BEFORE-SEEN PHOTOS OF ‘RAVIOLI’ MOON ORBITING SATURN The 12-year-long mission, which launched on Oct. 16, 2021, is the first mission to the Jupiter asteroids. The asteroids are in orbits around the sun and are the same distance as Jupiter.  Lucy is expected to reach the first of the so-called Trojan asteroids in 2027 and explore them for at least six years. What started as a list of seven asteroids to research has grown to 11. CLICK HERE FOR MORE US NEWS The name Dinkinesh means “you are marvelous” in the Amharic language of Ethiopia. It is also the Amharic name for Lucy, the 3.2-million-year-old remains of a human ancestor found in Ethiopia in the 19702, for which the spacecraft is named. “Dinkinesh really did live up to its name; this is marvelous,” Southwest Research Institute’s Hal Levison, the lead scientist, said in a statement. The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Texans’ CJ Stroud sets rookie single-game records in dazzling comeback win over Bucs

Texans' CJ Stroud sets rookie single-game records in dazzling comeback win over Bucs

It’s safe the say the Houston Texans have found their man at quarterback after C.J. Stroud absolutely lit up his home field in a 39-37 victory against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday. Stroud rewrote the record books in the process, too. Stroud set the rookie passing yards record in a single game with 470 yards on 30-for-42 through the air with five touchdowns, including the game-winning score to rookie receiver Tank Dell who scored twice in his first multi-score game. CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM Baker Mayfield and the Bucs were in position to spoil Stroud’s party when he found Cade Otton to cap a 61-yard drive late in the fourth quarter to take a 37-33 lead. But Stroud, who was dissecting the Bucs’ defense all game long, didn’t care that clock wasn’t on his side when he took the field to try to pull off a miracle. Stroud only needed six plays, finding tight end Dalton Schultz, who had 10 catches and 130 yards with a touchdown in this one, with his first two throws to get near midfield. Then, Stroud located Noah Brown, who led the Texans with a massive 153 yards on six catches and a score, for 14 yards to get the ball over into Bucs’ territory. CHIEFS’ WILD FUMBLE-RETURN SEQUENCE LEADS TO IMPROBABLE TOUCHDOWN VS DOLPHINS The best throw of Stroud’s night came next as he found Dell running a beautiful route on the left sideline, and he got two feet in for 26 yards to place the Texans on the 15-yard line. With 10 seconds left, Stroud dropped back and fired to Dell for 15 yards in the end zone, sending off a massive celebration at NRG Stadium in Houston. This game truly had it all, including a Texans backup running back needing to kick emergency field goals and kickoffs. Dare Ogunbowale was used by head coach DeMeco Ryans to replace an injured Ka’imi Fairbairn, and he drilled a 29-yard field goal with 8:45 left in the fourth quarter that was, at one point, going to be the game-winning points before madness ensued at the end. The Bucs made it hard for Stroud to enjoy what he was doing on the field all game long as Mayfield and his unit kept firing back at the Texans. But there just wasn’t enough time on the clock when they got the ball back, fumbling on a miracle attempt at the end of the game. Mayfield finished 21-of-30 for 265 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. His running back, Rachaad White, scored two rushing touchdowns on 20 carries for 73 yards while hauling in four catches for 46 yards.  Mike Evans was the leading receiver for Tampa, catching four balls for 87 yards. Otton also had 70 yards on six catches with two touchdowns. The Texans, now 4-4, have a tough task next week when they travel to Cincinnati to face the Bengals. Meanwhile, the Bucs, now 3-5, have the Tennessee Titans next on their schedule.

Tigers head coach Dabo Swinney had been under fire from fans over the course of the week as Clemson hasn’t looked like its usual self this season. Swinney had an outburst with a fan during his radio show but followed it with the big win to improve to 5-4 on the season. CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM After the game, Swinney had a clear message for the naysayers. “We haven’t had much go our way this year,” Swinney told ESPN sideline reporter Molly McGrath. “The one thing that has shown up every week is the heart and the fight from Clemson.  “I know we’re down and everybody’s throwing dirt on us. But if Clemson’s a stock, you better buy all you freakin’ can buy right now.” Tigers running back Phil Mafah rushed for 86 yards and two touchdowns. Cade Klubnick threw for one more and Clemson was able to pick up the win. COLORADO’S SHEDEUR SANDERS RIPS REPORTER’S ‘SETUP QUESTION’ AFTER LOSS TO OREGON STATE Clemson also picked off Hartman twice in the game. Jeremiah Trotter Jr. and Kylon Griffin were the ones who created the turnovers. Trotter returned his interception for a touchdown. “It’s tough because there’s no one that loves us more than (Swinney) does,” Mafah said. “I personally take it personal, I know a lot of guys do, too, so we had to bring our all today.” With the win, Swinney is now the all-time winningest head coach in Clemson football history. Trump leading Biden in 5 key battleground states as voters cringe at Biden’s age: poll

Trump leading Biden in 5 key battleground states as voters cringe at Biden's age: poll

Former President Donald Trump holds sizable leads over President Biden in five of the six most important battleground states, according to a New York Times-Siena College poll released Sunday. Trump leads Biden by a whopping 10 points in Nevada, six points in Georgia, five points in both Arizona and Michigan, and four points in Pennsylvania. Biden’s sole lead is in Wisconsin, where he beats Trump by two points. Biden had defeated Trump in all six states during the 2020 election. Combining the polling in all six states gives Trump a 48-44 lead over Biden. The NYT-Siena College poll surveyed 3,662 registered voters in the six states from Oct. 22 to Nov. 3. ACLU BACKS TRUMP IN FIGHT AGAINST DC JUDGE’S GAG ORDER The polling attributes Biden’s poor showing to a devastating lack of confidence due to his age. Voters said they trusted Trump to better hand the economy, foreign policy and immigration. NEW YORK JUDGE FINES TRUMP $10K FOR VIOLATING PARTIAL GAG ORDER IN CIVIL FRAUD TRIAL Trump’s performance also came thanks to unprecedented levels of support from black voters, with a record 22% of the demographic siding with him over Biden across the six states, according to NYT. Trump currently holds a commanding lead in the 2024 Republican Presidential primary, with his closest competitors dozens of points below him. “The world is falling apart under Biden,” Spencer Weiss, a 53-year-old electrical substation specialist in Pennsylvania told NYT. Weiss added that he was flipping his 2020 vote away from Biden. “I would much rather see somebody that I feel can be a positive role-model leader for the country. But at least I think Trump has his wits about him.” Soon to be 81, Biden is the oldest candidate in U.S. history to run for president, followed closely by Trump at 77. An overwhelming 71% of respondents told NYT that Biden is “too old” to serve as an effective president. Understanding the severity of the mosquito-borne disease dengue

Understanding the severity of the mosquito-borne disease dengue

Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne viral infection that affects millions of people worldwide, causing a wide range of symptoms.  In some cases, dengue can progress into a potentially life-threatening condition.  Recognizing the distinctions between dengue and severe dengue and knowing how to both prevent and handle these conditions is of paramount importance for public health. Below are essential insights into the fundamental facts of these illnesses. Dengue fever is caused by the dengue virus, transmitted to humans primarily through the bites of infected Aedes mosquitoes. ARE YOU A MOSQUITO MAGNET? IT MIGHT BE FOR ONE UNPLEASANT REASON Dengue fever typically presents a wide range of symptoms, including severe headaches, high fever, muscle pain, rashes and, occasionally, mild bleeding. In the majority of instances, dengue fever follows a mild and self-limiting course with symptoms typically subsiding within a week.  The seriousness of the dengue virus can vary widely depending on the specific strain of the virus, the individual’s age, overall health and access to medical care.  Dengue fever is generally characterized as a mild to moderate illness. However, severe forms of the disease can be life-threatening. Severe dengue represents an intensified and potentially life-threatening variant of the disease. It can manifest with severe abdominal pain, vomiting, fast and shallow breathing, along with a weak, accelerated pulse.  In the most critical cases, severe dengue can advance to dengue shock syndrome, marked by a sudden drop in blood pressure that may lead to fatal consequences.  ARGENTINA STERILIZES MOSQUITOES WITH RADIATION TO BATTLE DEVASTATING DENGUE OUTBREAK Notably, individuals with a prior dengue infection face an elevated risk of developing severe dengue if they are reinfected with a different dengue virus serotype. Dengue fever typically progresses through four stages, each characterized by specific symptoms: 1. Febrile phase: This is the initial stage of dengue fever, lasting for about two to seven days. The primary symptom is a sudden fever, often reaching up to 104 F. Other common symptoms include severe headaches, pain behind the eyes, joint and muscle pain, and a rash. 2. Critical phase: After the febrile phase, some individuals enter a critical phase, usually around the time the fever subsides. This phase typically extends for one to two days, during which the likelihood of progressing to severe dengue significantly rises. 3. Plasma leakage phase: During this stage, the blood vessels become more permeable, leading to the leakage of fluid from the bloodstream into surrounding tissues. This can result in symptoms like a sudden drop in blood pressure, fluid accumulation, and shock. 4. Recovery phase: This stage presents increased urination, as the leaked fluids are reabsorbed into the bloodstream.  Patients typically start to feel better, but they may experience fatigue and weakness for an extended period. It is essential to note that not all individuals with dengue fever progress to severe dengue. Most dengue cases are mild and self-limiting, with symptoms resembling the febrile phase.  However, identifying warning signs and seeking prompt medical attention is crucial to preventing severe dengue and its potentially life-threatening complications. Preventing dengue and severe dengue relies on controlling the mosquito vectors and taking personal protective measures. Mosquito control: Eliminate mosquito breeding sites around your home by removing stagnant water in containers, using mosquito nets, and installing screens on windows and doors. Travel precautions: If traveling to regions where dengue is endemic, take extra precautions to avoid mosquito exposure. Early diagnosis: Seek medical attention promptly if you suspect you have dengue, as early diagnosis and proper medical care can reduce the risk of severe dengue. Jets’ Aaron Rodgers makes appearance at Breeders’ Cup, says he still hopes to play this season

Jets' Aaron Rodgers makes appearance at Breeders' Cup, says he still hopes to play this season

The New York Jets landed superstar quarterback Aaron Rodgers in an offseason blockbuster trade. But his time under center was short-lived after he injured his Achilles on the fourth play of the season.  Rodgers has since undergone an innovative surgery that could accelerate the quarterback’s recovery time.  Normally, Achilles injuries require anywhere from nine months to a year of recovery time. But Rodgers has suggested he’ll suit up again this season, and he doubled down Saturday on his hope to play again this year. “It’s a process, step by step, day by day,” Rodgers told NBC Sports when he appeared at Santa Anita Park for the Breeders’ Cup. “There’s some great days, some rough days. But the goal for me is to come back this year.”  CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM The 39-year-old quarterback did caution that he has to reach a few benchmarks before he can play again. “It’s got to be — otherwise, I think it’d be a lot of rehab in vain. We’ll see what happens. I’ve got to hit some markers before that. I’ve got to be able to move around. I’ve got to be able to avoid putting myself in harm’s way.” PACKERS LEGEND SAYS IT WAS TIME FOR TEAM, AARON RODGERS TO PART WAYS: ‘BOTH SIDES HAVE TO BE HAPPY’ On Friday, Rodgers posted a cryptic message on his social media account.  “A little more time…,” Rodgers wrote alongside a photo of his new Zenith watch on Instagram. Rodgers has a partnership with the luxury watch brand. There have been some signs of hope, the most recent coming last weekend when he dropped back and put some weight on his injured left leg while throwing several passes during warmups before the Jets’ game against the New York Giants. Zach Wilson has faced criticism for his uneven play during his tenure with the Jets, and he entered this season as the backup to Rodgers. He was thrust back into the starting role once Rodgers went down. Rodgers praised Wilson’s play.  “The team’s been playing good,” Rodgers said. “Proud of Zach, proud of the boys. We’re 4-3. We’ve got a big one on Monday night and one coming up on NBC the following week. So, excited to head back there (Sunday) and see the fellas, cheer on a win and keep getting better.” Rodgers is a longtime horse racing enthusiast. His pick for Saturday’s Breeders’ Cup Classic was the Japanese horse Ushba Tesoro, the No. 8 horse in the race. Rodgers picked him because his jersey number is 8 and told NBC he still regrets not betting the No. 8 in the Kentucky Derby in May. The Jets host to the Los Angeles Chargers Monday night. The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Las Vegas sex worker accused of robbing, beating man in Strip hotel room

A Las Vegas prostitute has been arrested and charged with attempted murder and other crimes after she allegedly beat her disabled John to near death in a hotel room before stealing thousands of dollars of his cash, according to police. Napria Wilson, 26, left the mobility scooter-using victim with a broken back and fractures to his face after a disagreement about payment inside the Caesars Palace Las Vegas Hotel & Casino room turned ugly, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, citing local police. Wilson allegedly punched and kicked the man several times during the violent October 27 beat down before stealing his wallet which contained around $6,000 cash. NAKED MAN TUSSLES WITH LAS VEGAS COP BEFORE STEALING, CRASHING PATROL CAR: VIDEO The victim, who is in his 60s, was found covered in blood by a responding security officer. The man told police he had met Wilson on the casino floor that morning and solicited her services after winning some money, KLAS reported. “Once in the room, the [man] gave Wilson $500 cash for her services,” police said.  Wilson took the money and stayed in the room, but after a couple of minutes, she again asked the victim for the money. The victim told Wilson he had already given her the cash, which led to her becoming argumentative. LAS VEGAS CASINO OFFICIALS FACE DILEMMA AS TRESPASSERS COLLECT JACKPOTS She demanded the money again before unleashing the ferocious attack, cops say. The man told cops he had “brought a ‘hooker’ to his room . . . and she beat him and robbed him.” Wilson was seen on CCTV footage walking out of the room and into an elevator.  She was then captured on video vomiting while getting into a cab, police said, according to KLAS. “Wilson apologizes to the driver and tells him she will pay him extra to get her ‘out of here’ and appears to pass him a $100 dollar bill from her purse,” cops said about the interaction. The cab driver dropped Wilson off at her apartment complex. She was arrested on Wednesday while leaving the complex after cops reviewed video evidence.  Wilson also faces charges of robbery, residential burglary and battery with regard to the brutal attack, according to court documents. The judge set bail at $75,000, and she has remained in custody. She is due back in court on Tuesday.  Wilson was previously charged with attempted murder from a closed case in 2021 and has also been hit with multiple battery charges within the last three years, according to court documents cited by the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Jason Aldean says wife Brittany gets ‘fired up’ when defending him

Jason Aldean says wife Brittany gets 'fired up' when defending him

Jason Aldean and his wife of eight years, Brittany Aldean, make for one strong couple. In an interview with Fox News Digital, Aldean explained they both get “fired up” when the country music star has dealt with backlash, but Brittany seems to jump in first. “I think she probably gets fired up a little bit because it kind of trickles down because she obviously is on social media and those things a lot more than I am,” he began. “So, a lot of times it’ll be, you know, she may see something and go, ‘Hey, have you heard about such and such?’ “Then I go kind of down the rabbit hole looking at stuff, and then I kind of get fired up about it, you know? So, I think we both kind of get fired up about things, but she’s usually the first one with the breaking news.” JASON ALDEAN ‘SMALL TOWN’ BACKLASH: COUNTRY SINGER, WIFE BRITTANY FIGHT BACK AMID CONTROVERSIES Aldean is on his “Highway Desperado” tour. His 11th album by that name released Friday. Jason shared with Fox News Digital that his family is on the road with him, which Aldean loves because he doesn’t “have to spend a whole lot of time away from them.” “We kind of make it a family affair these days. The young kids are old enough to be able to stay up long enough to go out and watch shows, which has just happened in the last year or so, where they can kind of come out, stay awake long enough to see the show,” Aldean said. “So, they get excited about that. We were just out in California for three weeks or so, and we had some off days. So, we took them to Disney. We’ll get them off the bus and go do some fun stuff for them like that. We’re just trying to make it a family affair and try to spend as much time together as possible.” JASON ALDEAN ADDRESSES CRITICISM OF CONTROVERSIAL COUNTRY MUSIC VIDEO: ‘THIS ONE GOES TOO FAR’ Jason and Brittany tied the knot in 2015 and have two children — son Memphis, 7, and daughter Navy, 4.  Aldean also has two daughters with ex-wife Jessica Ussery — Keeley and Kendyl. The former couple was married for 12 years before splitting in 2013.  Jason was under fire this summer after he released “Try That In A Small Town.” After seeing the backlash online, Aldean took to social media to defend himself and the song he created. JASON ALDEAN TALKS RELEASE OF 11TH STUDIO ALBUM Two months after he released the song, Aldean released the song’s music video and faced backlash again. At the time, Aldean addressed his critics and defended his lyrics, denying the song has racial undertones.  “In the past 24 hours I have been accused of releasing a pro-lynching song (a song that has been out since May) and was subject to the comparison that I (direct quote) was not too pleased with the nationwide BLM protests,” Aldean shared with his nearly 8 million fans across social media. “These references are not only meritless, but dangerous. But the desire for it to – that’s what this song is about.”  In an interview with Fox News Digital, Aldean said, “People are kind of scared to say something a lot of times out of fear or losing a job or losing friends. … Maybe they’re not going to get work again or whatever it is. People tend to hop on the side that’s just politically correct, and it may be politically correct, but it’s not right. Massachusetts superintendent calls for change after male sends female to hospital in field hockey game

Massachusetts superintendent calls for change after male sends female to hospital in field hockey game

A superintendent in Massachusetts is calling for change to the state’s rules after a girl’s teeth were knocked out during a field hockey game by a shot from a male player. The Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association allows males and females to participate in the other gender’s sports if it is not made available to their own – thus, a male is able to participate in field hockey, which is generally a sport for females. The incident took place during a playoff game between Swampscott High School and Dighton-Rehoboth Regional High School earlier this week – a girl on the Dighton-Rehoboth team suffered “significant facial and dental injuries” that “required hospitalization” after she took a shot to the face from a male on Swampscott. CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM Now, Bill Runey, the superintendent of the Dighton-Rehoboth Regional School District, is calling for change to a rule that has been in place since the 1970s. “While I understand that the MIAA has guidelines in place for co-ed participation under section 43 of their handbook, this incident dramatically magnifies the concerns of many about player safety,” he said, via the Washington Times. “Seeing the horror in the eyes of our players and coaches upon greeting their bus last night is evidence to me that there has to be a renewed approach by the MIAA to protect the safety of our athletes,” he also said. CONNOR STALIONS, ACCUSED RINGLEADER OF MICHIGAN’S ALLEGED SIGN-STEALING SCHEME, RESIGNS The MIAA cites the Massachusetts Equal Rights Amendment, which was adopted in 1976, that discriminates based on gender – it was extended to scholastic sports three years later. The MIAA said they “understand” safety concerns, but wanting inclusion has trumped it. “We respect and understand the complexity and concerns that exist regarding student safety. However, student safety has not been a successful defense to excluding students of one gender from participating on teams of the opposite gender,” the MIAA said in a statement. “The arguments generally fail due to the lack of correlation between injuries and mixed-gender teams.”

Hinds County, Mississippi poll worker training disrupted by September cyber breach

Election officials in Mississippi’s most populous county had to scramble to complete required poll worker training after an early September breach involving county computers. In Hinds County, such training is typically completed by early October before a November general election, according to Election Commissioner Shirley Varnado. Instead, office staff members worked right up to Thursday’s deadline to finish the training after Varnado said they were unable to access their computers for about three weeks. Federal authorities were investigating after county computers were compromised for a period in early September, Hinds County Board Attorney Tony Gaylor said in an email Friday. Gaylor said the county’s computer network was “functioning again” and declined additional comment, citing the ongoing investigation. Messages seeking information from the county administrator were not returned. MISSISSIPPI’S LARGEST COUNTY CLOSES JAIL SECTION PLAGUED BY FIGHTS, ESCAPES The cyber incident caused a slight delay in the county’s ability to process voter registration forms, according to Circuit Clerk Zach Wallace, whose office handles this election process. Within a few days, staffers were able to use laptops not affected by the breach to connect to the state system for registering voters. Wallace said all applications were processed before the Oct. 10 deadline. Varnado said the county was “on track” for Tuesday’s election and no other issues were expected. The county encountered another hiccup on Oct. 26 when the secretary of state’s website was briefly inaccessible. During that time, according to Varnado, election staff were unable to verify voter registration information for poll workers, who are required by law to be registered to vote in the county where they work. Varnado said they have since verified this information. Issues with the state’s network were resolved and access to the statewide election management system was restored, according to state election officials.

Alert St. Louis hotel staff helps save kidnapped Florida women from captors: report

Alert St. Louis hotel staff helps save kidnapped Florida women from captors: report

St. Louis police credited a hotel staff’s “bizarre call” with helping rescue two women who were being held captive in their rooms. The women – ages 21 and 36 – pleaded with employees to help them when their alleged captors briefly left them alone last Saturday, local Fox 2 news reported.  They had been on a terrifying 10-day trip that started with a “moving job” in Florida. Then, three suspects allegedly took them to the Atlanta area and then finally to St. Louis, where the women were “frightened about what might be next,” according to the local news outlet.  “It wasn’t until they wound up in the area of Atlanta, Georgia, that they were told they weren’t going to be allowed to leave,” Sgt. Charles Wall, a spokesman for the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, told Fox 2.  KIDNAPPING SURVIVOR REMEMBERS DRAGGING ‘COLD, HEAVY CHAIN’ FROM CAPTOR’S DUNGEON DURING RESCUE St. Louis police did not say how long the women were in the city’s downtown Hampton Inn hotel. Fox News Digital left messages for police for more information and arresting documents. ANONYMOUS LETTER ABOUT MISSING WOMAN LEADS POLICE TO ‘UNUSUAL DIG SITE’ One of the three suspects – Nikki Rebarcak, 41 – was arrested after hotel staff told police she was back in the building.  She was charged with two counts of kidnapping and released on her own recognizance, but at least two other male suspects escaped, police told Fox 2.  The case raises fears of a human trafficking ring.  St. Louis officers are working with federal law enforcement and prosecutors to see if this is an isolated incident or part of a larger criminal network.  CLICK HERE FOR MORE TRUE CRIME “If (the suspects) have similar types of involvement with other agencies out of state, across the country, other similar incidents, those are all key indicators to get you to look at maybe some type of ring involved in this type of activity,” Sgt. Wall told Fox 2 in an interview. Police have identified one of Rebarcak’s alleged co-defendants and are actively searching for him, according to the local news outlet. Hotel ownership did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.

TX sheriff’s office probed by FBI over corruption allegations

San Jacinto County Sheriff Greg Capers at news conference

The FBI is investigating a Texas sheriff who faced complaints of corruption from his own deputies for years before drawing broader scrutiny for his agency’s response to a mass shooting, according to a woman interviewed by federal agents. The woman said she’s twice met with a pair of FBI agents in recent months after contacting them about what she feels was the sheriff’s botched investigation of her brother’s killing. Jenifer Jones told The Associated Press the agents gathered records accusing San Jacinto County Sheriff Greg Capers and his staff of wide-ranging misconduct and told her they were looking for potential civil rights violations. During hourslong interviews, Jones said they asked specific questions about cases and events well beyond her brother’s death. Federal investigators’ interest in the rural sheriff comes after an AP investigation found longstanding accusations that Capers has ignored deputies’ misconduct and neglected basic police work while pursuing asset seizures that boost his office’s $3.5 million budget but don’t always hold up in court. TEXAS SHERIFF WAS NEVER INVESTIGATED DESPITE YEARS OF COMPLAINTS ABOUT CORRUPTION, ACCORDING TO DEPUTIES TEXAS SHERIFF TELLS CONGRESS COUNTY ‘UNDER SIEGE’ AS DEPARTMENT SHARES MIGRANT SMUGGLING CASES It’s unclear how far along the FBI investigation is or when it might be concluded. Many federal investigations never result in criminal charges. An FBI spokesperson said the agency neither confirms nor denies investigations. Capers did not directly respond to calls seeking comment, but his second-in-command said they haven’t heard from agents and that their office is always open to outside scrutiny. “I look forward to the visit, if they’ll show up here and ask the other half of the story,” Chief Deputy Tim Kean said. The probe follows years of complaints by the sheriff’s staff to state and federal law enforcement. Capers gained prominence in May while leading the dayslong search for a man who fatally shot five neighbors in the county, which is an hour’s drive from Houston. But he also drew criticism for initially providing inaccurate information about deputies’ response time and from some residents who said they felt neglected by and even fear the sheriff. The time agents spent with Jones shows they have “a great deal of interest in information she’s providing,” said Michelle Lee, a retired FBI agent in Texas. She noted that’s a strong indicator of an open investigation, but warned that such probes can go on under-the-radar for years. Jones, 47, said she reached out to the FBI over the summer, hoping the scrutiny of Capers following the shooting would make it easier for her to draw attention to the sheriff’s investigation into her brother’s death. TEXAS SHERIFF’S DEPUTY KILLED RESPONDING TO DOMESTIC FIGHT, SUSPECT ARRESTED Jones’ brother, John Wayne Dodge, was fatally shot in 2020 and sheriff’s deputies arrested his son for murder. But in 2022 prosecutors dropped the case “in the interest of justice,” court records show. Jones believes another man is responsible for her brother’s death and was never adequately investigated. San Jacinto County District Attorney Todd Dillon said information about that man was also presented to a grand jury in 2020. Dillon said that he couldn’t comment on another agency’s investigation, but that after taking office last year he concluded there wasn’t “sufficient evidence or cause to proceed” with the case against Dodge’s son. In September, Jones said she met with two FBI agents from Bryan, Texas. During the interview, she said they indicated there might not be much they could do about Dodge’s case but asked for her help connecting them with people who may have been wronged by the sheriff. Jones said she also gave the agents a copy of a police consultant’s report that compares the sheriff’s office to organized crime. The county leaders who paid nearly $50,000 for the report last year disregarded its recommendation to ask the Texas Rangers’ public corruption squad to investigate Capers. TEXAS SHERIFF OPENS CRIMINAL PROBE INTO DESANTIS OPERATION TO FLY MIGRANTS TO MARTHA’S VINEYARD Agents would consider it a “red flag” that officials ignored the conclusion of a report they paid for, Lee said. Jones provided the names and official email addresses of the agents she met with. A law enforcement official confirmed agents with those names work for the FBI in Bryan. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media. Jones said she met with them again in October, providing more records and contact information for other people who were interested in talking about the sheriff. She recalled one agent telling her they were looking for cases in which people’s rights were violated. Jones said she wants county residents to know there is an outside authority they can turn to with complaints about the sheriff. “I feel like the victims of this county have nowhere else to go,” she said.

Cold and flu season is coming: Know the warning signs and symptoms now

Cold and flu season is coming: Know the warning signs and symptoms now

“Game of Thrones” may be over, but winter is still coming. That means the dreaded cold and flu season is right around the corner.  “A visit with a clinician has become increasingly common for upper respiratory symptoms since the COVID pandemic,” Mark Fendrick, M.D., a general internist at the University of Michigan, who is based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, told Fox News Digital.  HAVE A COLD OR FLU? HERE’S HOW TO KNOW IF YOU CAN STILL WORK OUT: ‘USE THE NECK CHECK’ “However, it is much more likely that cold symptoms will be self-limited and not require more than your favorite home remedy,” added Fendrick, who has studied the common cold. While there’s no specific treatment for the common cold, there are some instances when antivirals are prescribed to treat the flu, the doctor noted.  “Doctors can only prescribe recommended treatment for specific causes that are less common than the common cold, such as antivirals for influenza or COVID-19 or antibiotics for bacterial infections such as strep throat,” Fendrick said. FLU PREVENTION TIPS FROM FLORIDA’S SURGEON GENERAL: A ‘DAY-TO-DAY’ HEALTHY LIFESTYLE IS KEY It’s important to understand the signs and symptoms that should alert you to seek medical attention when you have a cold or the flu this winter season, he said. Here’s what to know. The common cold can be caused by as many as 200 respiratory viruses, but the most prevalent is the rhinovirus, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website.  The flu is caused by influenza viruses that generally infect the nose, throat and sometimes the lungs, per the CDC. The cold and flu share many of the same symptoms, which means it can sometimes be difficult to tell the difference between the two conditions.  People are generally sicker with the flu, experts agree. AFTER LOSING HER LEG TO THE FLU, VIRGINIA WOMAN URGES PEOPLE TO GET VACCINATED: ‘DON’T WASTE TIME’ Flu symptoms are more intense and come on quicker than the common cold, which generally has milder symptoms. “The cold and flu can sometimes be complicated by pneumonia, bacteremia and rarely even central nervous system involvement,” Dr. James H. Conway, pediatric infectious disease physician and medical director of the immunization program at UW Health Kids in Madison, Wisconsin, told Fox News Digital. When respiratory viruses infect the nose, the body responds by making mucus to help clear out the viruses, according to the CDC. SKELETONS FROM 1918 FLU PANDEMIC REVEAL CLUES ABOUT THOSE MOST LIKELY TO DIE, STUDY FINDS People may develop nasal congestion, which is more common with colds. They may also experience sneezing, coughing or a sore throat. Over the next several days, the mucus may change color to white, yellow or green. This color change is a natural progression of a cold, so antibiotics that fight bacteria are not typically prescribed, per the CDC. Most people with colds don’t develop a fever, so that symptom combined with headache and body aches could indicate influenza. Symptoms from a cold usually peak within two to three days.  Conway recommends watching for symptoms that indicate a cold or flu may have turned into a more serious infection. These may include higher fevers, he said, since most viral infections don’t generally cause that symptom. COVID-19, FLU AND RSV VACCINES ARE ALL AVAILABLE THIS FALL: SEE WHAT SOME DOCTORS RECOMMEND AND WHY Other warning signs include shaking chills, fast or labored breathing, and any type of bad headache or confusion, he added.  “Any of these viral illnesses can also lead to ear infections or sinus infections,” Conway said.  In those cases, fever with ear pain or facial pain is often seen. Most illnesses from a cold or the flu last fewer than 10 days; but if symptoms persist and a person hasn’t gotten better by the end of that timeframe, it’s important to see a health care professional, per the CDC. STUFFY NOSE? COMMON OTC NASAL DECONGESTANTS WITH PHENYLEPHRINE DON’T WORK IN TABLET FORM, EXPERTS SAY If you are unsure whether your symptoms are serious, always talk to your health care provider, either in person or via a virtual appointment. “The increased availability of telemedicine provides an opportunity for many individuals to describe their symptoms and other important clinical information (such as the presence of fever) without an in-person visit, so their clinician can determine whether further evaluation of treatment is needed in most cases,” Fendrick told Fox News Digital. People who are at high risk of complications from the flu should contact their health care provider early in their illness to determine whether they should get a prescription for an antiviral medication like Tamiflu. This includes those who are 65 and older, young children, pregnant women and those who have had asthma, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, heart disease or stroke. Tamiflu can be prescribed within 48 hours of the start of the flu illness in people 2 weeks of age and older, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR OUR HEALTH NEWSLETTER The oral antiviral medication reduces the duration of the flu by attacking the virus and preventing it from multiplying in the body, the FDA added. Adults should carefully watch for warning signs in children with the flu, experts advise. “In babies, it’s trickier, so poor feeding is something else to watch for,” Conway said. Children with the flu may also start to experience breathing difficulties.  Parents should take a child to the doctor or emergency room right away if they notice the child’s lips turning blue or the ribs pulling in with each breath.  Complaints of chest pain also warrant a visit, according to the CDC. Dehydration is also common among children with the flu, so parents should seek medical attention if the child has not urinated for eight hours or has no tears when crying, the agency added. Other emergency warning signs are when young children become more fussy or drowsy than usual, or if they are not alert or interacting when awake, according to the CDC. The keys to prevention, Conway stated, are getting flu vaccinations and having ill people stay home to prevent the spread. For more Health articles, visit www.foxnews.com/health.

Illegal immigrant convicted of murder in Venezuela found living in state-funded housing in Massachusetts

Illegal immigrant convicted of murder in Venezuela found living in state-funded housing in Massachusetts

A man convicted of murder in Venezuela who managed to cross the southern border was found living in state-funded migrant housing on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, according to a statement released by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The fugitive, identified by Boston 25 News as 38-year-old Jordano Gotopo-Lopez, was convicted of homicide in his home country of Venezuela, where he has been wanted since 2006 for a violation of his sentencing conditions there. Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) Boston arrested Gotopo-Lopez on Oct. 27 at a migrant housing facility on Joint Base Cape Cod in Bourne.  MAYORKAS CONFIRMS OVER 600,000 ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS EVADED LAW ENFORCEMENT AT SOUTHERN BORDER LAST FISCAL YEAR ICE said Gotopo-Lopez “failed to disclose” his previous conviction when he was arrested for illegally entering the U.S. in Eagle Pass, Texas, on July 31.  Gotopo-Lopez was processed in Texas and given a notice to report himself to immigration authorities in 60 days, but he never showed up. MAYORKAS CONFIRMS OVER 600,000 ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS EVADED LAW ENFORCEMENT AT SOUTHERN BORDER LAST FISCAL YEAR When Gotopo-Lopez was discovered by authorities at the Cape Cod shelter, he admitted that he had been convicted of murder and was wanted in Venezuela, ICE said. BORDER PATROL STOPS RECORD NUMBER OF PEOPLE ON TERROR WATCH LIST AT SOUTHERN BORDER He was arrested without incident and will remain in custody until his removal from the U.S., according to ICE. ERO Boston Field Office Director Todd M. Lyons said that his team remains committed to “identifying, apprehending and seeking the removal of unlawfully present fugitives who pose a real threat to public safety.” “The people of Massachusetts have a right to be made aware of potential risks to their public safety, especially when an unlawfully present fugitive living in housing provided by the Commonwealth, is present in their community,” Lyons said.  HIGH MIGRANT NUMBERS BREAK MULTIPLE RECORDS IN NEW BLOW TO BIDEN BORDER STRATEGY “ERO Boston remains committed to identifying, apprehending and seeking the removal of unlawfully present fugitives who pose a real threat to public safety. We will continue to safeguard our communities and fulfill our mission in Massachusetts and throughout New England. The hospitality of the people of the Commonwealth must never be taken advantage of by those who violate our immigration system and threaten the security of our residents,” Lyons said. ICE said that in fiscal year 2022, ERO removed 46,396 noncitizens with criminal histories. The government agency noted that there have been 198,498 associated charges and convictions, including 21,531 assault offenses; 8,164 sex and sexual assault offenses; 5,554 weapons offenses; 1,501 homicide-related offenses; and 1,114 kidnapping offenses. Fox News Digital reached out to ICE for additional information.
