Oklahoma Superintendent warns math publishers, ‘Go to California’ if they can’t teach math without CRT

Oklahoma Superintendent warns math publishers, 'Go to California' if they can't teach math without CRT

Oklahoma’s top education official is warning textbook publishers that if they can’t teach basic academics without “pushing indoctrination,” they shouldn’t bother bringing their curriculum to the state. “Look, for me, that’s absolutely fine. If you can’t teach math without talking about transgenderism, go to California, go to New York,” Superintendent Ryan Walters remarked to Fox News Digital. The conservative official has been at the forefront of the state’s battle against left-wing ideologies in public schools. Recently, several publishers of math texts withdrew their petitions to be included in the state curriculum, after Walter warned them Oklahoma would not accept textbooks that have critical race theory and social emotional learning content. “I sent out a letter to all textbook companies involved with the state and say, Listen, we will be checking for these things now. Do not give us textbooks that have critical race theory in them,” he said. AS OKLAHOMA SCHOOLS CHALLENGE ‘WOKE’ CONTENT, TEXTBOOK PUBLISHERS WITHDRAW FROM STATE Oklahoma lawmakers passed a law regarding “subject matter standards” in 2020, requiring an extra review by experts before a textbook is recommended to the state textbook committee, a process they said can filter out textbooks of poor quality or questionable content. Walters said he sent a clear message to vendors that if they violated the law in order to push gender ideology and CRT-type philosophies in their textbooks, they were not welcome to do business in the state.  “In Oklahoma, our kids are going to know the basics. We want them to master it. We want them to do exceptionally well academically,” he explained. “We’re not here for any kind of Joe Biden’s socialist Marxist training ground.” “And if a vendor cannot produce textbooks that actually help our students understand math and understand better science, well, then they can go somewhere else. We’ve got plenty to choose from, and I know that there’s going to be plenty of folks that are able to get us great materials for our schools,” Walters said. Besides challenging incoming texts, Walter said the state has taken several steps to empower parents and teachers, while protecting children in Oklahoma schools. They’ve passed a parent bill of rights, universal school choice, and a ban on pornographic material. LISTEN UP, TEACHERS: STOP GOING WOKE Walters has also led a fight against teachers unions in his state, whom he says take money away from teachers and promote radical political ideology rather than education in public schools.  His state wants to reward teachers and tutors based on free market principles, he said. That’s why they recently launched a teacher-recruitment program that will allow teachers to make up to six figures working in the classroom as part of an effort to reward good teachers. His mission to overhaul the school system comes down to getting kids to focus “on the basics,” like reading, writing and history, he says, instead of “woke indoctrination.”  “We’re not talking about ‘Flamer.’ We’re not talking about ‘Gender Queer.’ We’re not talking about make-believe genders. We’re talking about truth, reality. And we’re going to get our kids ready to go by focusing on the basics,” he said. CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP This ideology not only “lies” to kids and “warps” their worldview, he said, it also is linked to poor academic standards in schools. He gave the example of his investigation into Tulsa Public Schools, which he said first violated the state’s ban on CRT in the classroom. Over 95% of students at 15 elementary schools in the district couldn’t read at grade-level, he said.  “It is not a coincidence that your most woke school districts are your lowest performing school districts. The two are absolutely tied together,” Walters analyzed. “Which is why we’re not only committed to driving out every ounce of woke indoctrination in our schools, we’re also dedicated to using free market principles to stand up and encourage mastery of those basics in our schools.” The former high school history teacher pushed back on the narrative that conservatives are trying to ban books that talk about slavery and civil rights from the classroom. U.S. history classes should teach students to look at the principles the country was founded on, and evaluate the country’s record of applying those principles as a whole, he argued. “So as you go through, you talk about the times that America has led the free world, that we have continued to be that light. We’ve done more for individual liberty than any other country in the history of the world. And those belief systems that were there in place, it allowed us to do it. You’ve got to talk about our Judeo-Christian values. The founders were very clear that that was a crucial part of our success. Then you go through and you evaluate. Are these times we lived up to our core principles? You’ve got to be honest with kids about our history. So you talk about all of it, but you evaluate it through the prism of our founding principles. Is this a time we lived up to those principles?” he said. The conservative sees his fight in Oklahoma as part of a national battle against the Biden administration’s actions in education. “We are absolutely not going to bend the knee to Joe Biden and do the bidding of the most radical administration that we’ve ever seen in this country,” he said. LAURA INGRAHAM: How does it makes any sense for the US to go further into debt?

LAURA INGRAHAM: How does it makes any sense for the US to go further into debt?

Laura Ingraham highlights the demands for more funding to Ukraine, Israel and other causes as the U.S. debt continues to rise on “The Ingraham Angle.” LAURA INGRAHAM: It was a clown show on Capitol Hill today – the same people who’ve been wrong about pretty much every major foreign policy issue for the past 25 years are back at it again. Today, Blinken and Austin testified before Congress asking for another $106 billion for multiple urgent priorities – Ukraine, Israel, something in the Far East and humanitarian aid to Gaza. They call it an emergency supplemental, but the real emergency is in Biden’s reelection campaign, which is taking on more water than Biden’s taken naps.  Now, this, by the way, went on and on and on. So much for that unbreakable Biden coalition. Now, this is where most normal people, though, are asking how it makes any sense for the US to go further into debt to pay for these emergencies when we already have $33 trillion that we’re going to have to pay off? And last fiscal year, a staggering $1.7 trillion budget deficit. This is their answer.  This is mind-blowing. Deplete our own stockpiles by sending weapons to, sadly, a losing cause in Ukraine, then spend more money to replenish the stockpiles which will help the defense contractors. They really do think you’re stupid. Well, the things are going the way things are going now in Ukraine. We should just have the Pentagon send weapons directly to Russia because they’re going to end up taking them eventually anyway, just like they did, of course, the Taliban in Afghanistan.  Now, the fact is, even the staunchest war hawks can no longer make a persuasive case for Ukraine. This is the main reason, by the way, why they want to combine the $61.4 billion request for Ukraine with the funding requests for legitimate reasons, like Israel and elsewhere.  For more Culture, Media, Education, Opinion, and channel coverage, visit foxnews.com/media.

Rangers hero Adolis García out of World Series Game 4 lineup due to injury

Rangers hero Adolis García out of World Series Game 4 lineup due to injury

The Texas Rangers will head into Game 4 of the World Series against the Arizona Diamondbacks without their Game 1 hero, Adolis García, on Tuesday night. Garcia is dealing with a “moderate oblique strain,” according to manager Bruce Bochy, which Garcia tweaked in the Rangers’ Game 3 victory on Monday night. Because of that, García wasn’t in the starting lineup for the Rangers. While Bochy said that García would be evaluated, ESPN’s Buster Olney reported that he was walking through the clubhouse with a bat and said “all is good.” CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM “It’s not great news,” Bochy said. Travis Jankowski replaced García in the lineup, as he will play in right field. Mitch Garver also moved up the lineup to the No. 3 spot where García has exclusively been. Evan Carter will hit fourth and Josh Jung will hit fifth.  RANGES’ ADOLIS GARCIA BLASTS WALK-OFF HOME RUN IN 11TH TO COMPLETE COMEBACK IN GAME 1 OF WORLD SERIES García left Monday night’s game in the eighth inning after flying out. He was in pain once he made the swing, and he was immediately taken out of the game by Bochy for further evaluation. The initial diagnosis was left-side tightness before Bochy’s comments on his oblique. García has had a historic run in October, hitting .323/.382/.726 with eight home runs in 15 games for Texas. García was named the ALCS MVP after smashing three homers in a six at-bat stretch to lead Texas over the Houston Astros in Games 6 and 7. His flair for the dramatic also came out in Game 1 of the World Series as he hit a walk-off home run in the 11th inning after Corey Seager’s two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth forced extra innings. That home run gave Garcia 22 RBI for an MLB postseason record, breaking St. Louis Cardinals third baseman David Freese’s previous record during the 2011 playoffs, where the Rangers fell in the World Series.  The Rangers, now up 2-1 in the series after beating the Diamondbacks on Monday night, 3-1, are taking García’s absence from the lineup in stride. It’s a next-man-up mentality.  “Whoever slots into his spot in the lineup is going to do a great job; whoever plays right field will do a great job,” Nathaniel Lowe told ESPN. “It’s nothing new to us.” First pitch is set for Game 4 at 8:03 p.m. ET on FOX with the Rangers giving the ball to Andrew Heaney and the D-Backs going with Joe Mantiply to start.

NJ Gov Phil Murphy used thousands in taxpayer funds to party at Taylor Swift concert, stadium events: report

NJ Gov Phil Murphy used thousands in taxpayer funds to party at Taylor Swift concert, stadium events: report

Democratic New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy is asking the state Democratic Party to reimburse taxpayers after he used $12,000 in state funds at a Taylor Swift concert and other stadium events. Murphy’s expenditures, first reported by Politico, were all for food and drinks at MetLife Stadium. When confronted with the spending, Murphy’s office reportedly said it was asking the state Democratic Party to pay back the state. Murphy’s office says it had always expected the state party to cover the costs, but noticed it had failed to do so. The governor’s office then dipped into a $95,000 personal expense account set up for the office. That account is set up to pay for “Official Receptions, Official Residence, and Other Official Expenses,” and cannot be used for “personal purposes,” according to Politico. “Once it was clear that there were outstanding bills that had not been paid, the state stepped up to meet this responsibility,” Murphy spokeswoman Jennifer Sciortino told the outlet in a statement. “We are pursuing reimbursement from the state party for costs incurred at MetLife Stadium.” PATRICK MAHOMES WANTS TO ‘ONE-UP’ TAYLOR SWIFT AND HIS WIFE’S HANDSHAKE WITH TRAVIS KELCE Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, a Republican, ran into a similar issue when he served as governor. Christie, however, had the state Republican Party reimburse roughly $82,000 spent at MetLife Stadium. MSNBC’S ALICIA MENENDEZ ADDRESSES FATHER’S INDICTMENT: COLLEAGUES HAVE ‘AGGRESSIVELY’ COVERED Public records show Murphy’s office spent $936 on food and drinks at a Taylor Swift concert in 2018; $2,095 at a Sept. 2018 USA vs. Brazil soccer game; $2,068 at a Nov. 2018 Jets vs. Patriots game; $1,413 at the Hot 97’s Summer Jam in June 2019; $2,856 for the Sept. 2019 USA vs. Mexico soccer game, and $2,479 for the Oct. 2019 Jets vs. Cowboys game, according to Politico. Murphy’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Fox News Digital. NEW POLL REVEALS HUGE GAP IN CONCERN OVER BIDEN’S AGE VS. TRUMP’S IN HYPOTHETICAL 2024 MATCHUP Murphy is not the only prominent New Jersey Democrat facing increased scrutiny into his finances, however. Sen. Messi wins record-extending 8th Ballon d’Or over Manchester City’s Erling Haaland, PSG’s Kylian Mbappé

Messi wins record-extending 8th Ballon d'Or over Manchester City's Erling Haaland, PSG's Kylian Mbappé

Lionel Messi has won the men’s Ballon d’Or, soccer’s biggest individual prize, for a record-extending eighth time. After missing out on the trophy in 2022, Messi, who is widely regarded as the best soccer player ever, reclaimed the title as the current best in the world on Monday, adding to his storied career. “Tonight I’m enjoying myself. It’s a pleasure that will never leave me, and I hope to be able to enjoy it for many years to come,” Messi said in his acceptance speech through a translator. Messi won the trophy in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2019, 2021, and now 2023. OWEN WILSON LIKENS LIONEL MESSI MANIA TO PELÉ’S SHOCKING ARRIVAL TO US IN 1975: ‘MAYBE EVEN BIGGER’ The 36-year-old Messi won ahead of Manchester City forward Erling Haaland, a 23-year-old Norwegian star who is dominating the English Premier League, England’s top soccer competition. Haaland, who is called a goal-scoring machine, has averaged more than one goal per game in his 45 matches this season. He also scored 36 goals in 35 appearances during 2022, his debut year, setting a league record. Other contenders for the top title included Messi’s former teammate at Paris Saint-Germain, the 24-year-old French sensation Kylian Mbappé, who helped carry France to the 2022 World Cup finals. Messi tipped his proverbial cap to both rising stars, saying they deserve the title and will win it too “one day.” “Haaland and Mbappe will win the Ballon d’Or one day,” Messi said. “Erling deserved it very much too, he has won the Premier League, and Champions League while being the top scorer of everything. This award could have been yours today too. I’m sure in the next years you will win it.” Messi’s historic eighth Ballon d’Or comes he after captured his first World Cup title in Qatar last year after leading Argentina to a victory over France. Since moving to Inter Miami in the United States, Messi has already picked up his first silverware after inspiring the team to victory in the U.S. Leagues Cup. Messi’s latest win marked the first time a Major League Soccer-based player got such recognition. Messi received the trophy from former Manchester United star David Beckham, who is one of the owners of his new club. “I’m very happy with the decisions I’ve made and to be with Miami,” Messi said. LIONEL MESSI SCORES INCREDIBLE GOAL FROM 20 YARDS OUT AS MIAMI TOPS PHILADELPHIA IN LEAGUES CUP SEMIS During Monday’s acceptance speech, Messi thanked his Argentina coach, teammates and staff for making his victory possible. “Becoming world champion was the title we were missing. I’d like to thank everyone who helped make Argentina the world champion team, the soccer star said. He won the sport’s biggest individual prize due to his tremendous World Cup performance, where he scored seven goals for Argentina and assisted in three. He scored twice in the final against France. Messi also paid tribute to the late Diego Maradona, who also helped Argentina win the World Cup back in 1986. “This title and this trophy,” Messi said, “I share them with you and all our Argentina comrades.” CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM Aitana Bonmati won the women’s award for guiding Spain to victory at the Women’s World Cup in August. She also helped Barcelona win the Women’s Champions League and Spanish league. As far as the Ballon d’Or goes, no other player has ever won more than five times. Cristiano Ronaldo, the famed Portuguese striker who is often included in the greatest-of-all-time conversation, has won the trophy five times while Michel Platin, Johan Cruyff and Marco van Basten each won it three times. In other awards, the best under-21 player was Jude Bellingham, an English player on La Liga club Real Madrid, and Haaland won the Gerd Müller award for the best striker of the year. Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema won the Ballon d’Or in 2022. The Lev Yashin award for best goalkeeper went to Emiliano Martinez, an Argentinian who plays for the Premier League club Aston Villa and the Argentina national team. The humanitarian prize named after the late Brazil midfielder Socrates went to Vinicius Junior, a Real Madrid player, for his involvement in the foundation he set up for underprivileged children. Corey Seager launches another home run to lead Rangers over Diamondbacks in Game 3

Corey Seager launches another home run to lead Rangers over Diamondbacks in Game 3

Corey Seager’s two-run home run gave the Texas Rangers the lead they needed to defeat the Arizona Diamondbacks, 3-1, in Game 3 of the World Series on Monday night.  Seager, the man who gave his Rangers the opportunity to walk it off in Game 1 with a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth down two, continues to swing a hot bat.  Diamondbacks starter Brandon Pfaadt hung an 87-mph changeup that was supposed to be on the outside corner, but ended up right in Seager’s wheelhouse inside. The sweet-swinging lefty turned his hands in quickly and launched the ball 114-mph off his bat and 421 feet down the right field line for a two-run homer.  CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM The Rangers already got on the scoreboard first in the inning thanks to Marcus Semien’s RBI single that scored Nathaniel Lowe. But Seager’s bomb was all the insurance the Rangers needed to take down the team that scored nine runs two nights ago.  The Rangers saw 39-year-old Max Scherzer get the start on Monday night, but unfortunately he wasn’t able to go as long as he wanted to due to injury.  In the bottom of the second inning, Scherzer took a comebacker off his lower bat when Alek Thomas hit a grounder right back up the middle. Josh Jung would pick it up bare-handed and throw out Thomas to end the inning, but Scherzer appeared to have some back issues when he went out to pitch in the fourth inning.  RANGERS’ MAX SCHERZER EXITS WORLD SERIES GAME 3 START WITH APPARENT BACK INJURY  While the third inning ended with Scherzer being just fine, he was noticeably grimacing when he tried to throw warmup pitches before that fourth frame. He ended his night allowing no runs, two hits, two walks and striking out one over three innings.  Texas needed the bullpen to pick up their starter, and Jon Gray was just the man for the job. Gray was rock solid coming out of the ‘pen after Scherzer had to end his night, delivering three innings of no-run ball, allowing just one hit and striking out three.  Josh Sborz pitched a scoreless seventh inning, but the D-Backs finally got on the board against Aroldis Chapman in the eighth.  Geraldo Perdomo was able to smack a ball to left field, which scored Emmanuel Rivera from second base to make it a 3-1 game. However, that was all they could muster in this one.  Jose Leclerc finished things in the bottom of the ninth, getting Gabriel Moreno to ground out to Jung and striking out Christian Walker as well as Tommy Pham for a perfect 1-2-3 frame.  The Rangers and Diamondbacks will get back out on the field on Halloween night for Game 4, with pitching matchups still to be determined.

Cardinals bench Josh Dobbs, making way for Kyler Murray’s potential season debut

Cardinals bench Josh Dobbs, making way for Kyler Murray's potential season debut

Arizona Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon has walked back his statement after another loss Sunday that Josh Dobbs would remain the team’s quarterback.  Gannon said Dobbs will be benched after reviewing tape of the 31-24 loss to the Baltimore Ravens, which pushed the Cardinals to 1-7 on the season – the worst mark in the NFL. So, who’s next up at quarterback? It all depends on how Kyler Murray, the team’s No. 1 overall pick of the 2019 NFL Draft, looks in practice this week. CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM Murray has been rehabbing from a torn ACL he suffered late last season, but his 21-day practice window opened last week. He has been on the practice field, fully participating with the Cardinals in their team workouts, though Arizona never activated him off the physically unable to play list. If Murray is deemed healthy enough for game action, he would likely make his season debut on Sunday. The Cardinals have until Saturday to put him on their 53-man roster. RAVENS WIN OVER CARDINALS BEHIND GUS EDWARD’S 3 TOUCHDOWNS It’s also worth noting that, with the NFL trade deadline on Tuesday, Murray will reportedly not be shopped by the Cardinals despite rumors they wanted his contract off the books.  If Murray can’t go, rookie Clayton Tune, the fifth-round pick out of Houston, would make his NFL debut against the Cleveland Browns – the top defense in the league that gives up just 260 yards of total offense per game.  Tune looked to be the starter for the Cardinals in Week 1 until they signed Dobbs, who took over as the starter after just a week with the team. Tune spent all five collegiate seasons with Houston and had his best season in 2022 with 4,074 yards, 40 touchdowns and 544 yards rushing. Many pegged Arizona to be the worst team in the league this season due to Murray’s absence to start the year and not a consistent starter in place. Veteran Colt McCoy, who had backed up Murray last season, appeared to be the starter until the Cardinals cut him before the year began. When Dobbs took over, the Cardinals did lose their first two games of the season, but they were certainly competing. In Week 3, heads turned when the Dallas Cowboys lost to the Cardinals in Glendale, leading to some believing that Dobbs could definitely hold it down until Murray got healthy. But the Cardinals have not won since Week 3, leading Gannon to make the change now. Dobbs threw for 1,569 yards with eight touchdowns and five interceptions as well as 258 rushing yards and three touchdowns on the ground in eight games this season. Dobbs threw two touchdowns and two interceptions with 208 yards on 25 of 37 as well as a rushing touchdown in the loss to the Ravens on Sunday.

Los Angeles model found dead in her refrigerator with wrists, ankles bound: police

Los Angeles model found dead in her refrigerator with wrists, ankles bound: police

A Los Angeles-based freelance model was found dead in her refrigerator with her ankles and wrists bound last month, a new report revealed. An autopsy report released Friday indicated Maleesa Mooney, 31, was found severely beaten, bound and gagged, FOX 11 Los Angeles reported.  Mooney, who also worked as a real estate agent, was found dead in her apartment on Sept. 12. She was last seen alive on surveillance footage in the apartment complex on Sept. 6, per a medical examiner report reviewed by FOX 11. An unidentified man was reportedly seen using her key fob to activate the building’s elevator and carrying plastic bags into her apartment.  REAL ESTATE AGENT FOUND MURDERED AFTER SUSPICIOUS PHONE ACTIVITY Mooney’s family called on the Los Angeles Police Department to perform a welfare check on Sept. 10 after they were uncharacteristically unable to reach her for more than 24 hours.  Although an officer did respond to her residence at the Bunker Hill Towers Apartments, officers could not make contact with her and “left a card at her door,” sister Jourdin Pauline told Fox News Digital. That day, previously blue iPhone text messages from Mooney’s phone suddenly turned green, Pauline said, indicating that a thief may have changed her phone settings.  When building management let police into her apartment on Sept. 12, she was found “wedged inside a refrigerator” with blood outside it, FOX 11 reported. A gag made of clothing was reportedly stuffed into her mouth and other items covered her head. Electrical cords and clothing were used to bind her extremities, ABC 7 reported.  The night before the family lost contact with Mooney, Pauline said, she was having friends over at her new apartment, where she had just moved a month earlier. LOS ANGELES MODEL FOUND DEAD IN APARTMENT DIED FROM ‘HOMICIDAL VIOLENCE,’ MEDICAL EXAMINER RULES Mooney died from blunt force trauma, per the report, evidenced by abrasions, lacerations and contusions concentrated around her head and emanating to her body and extremities. Additionally, one of her ribs was fractured.  Though none of her injuries “are generally considered acutely life-threatening on their own,” the examiner wrote that “based on the circumstances of how Ms. Mooney was found… she was likely involved in [a] violent physical altercation prior to her death.” Suffocation may have played a role in her death, per the report, and the role of drugs is “uncertain” – cocaine was reportedly found in her system post-mortem. No direct marks from strangulation were observed on Mooney’s body, per the report.  Mooney’s manner of death was listed as “homicidal violence.” But no arrests have been made and no suspects in Mooney’s death have been publicly identified.  SAN FRANCISCO MAN ALLEGEDLY ASSAULTS PARISHONER AT CHURCH, TOSSES ‘IMPROVISED DEVICE’ AT POLICE DURING CHASE Fox News Digital could not reach the LAPD at press time for further details.  Pauline described Mooney as the “most amazing girl ever.” “She loved to cook, she was very nice, very sweet genuine person,” she said on Friday. “She would ask a stranger how their day was going – just a very sweet, open-hearted person. She was very funny, very goofy. She could make a whole room laugh. And smart, and was very, very smart.” Although she dabbled in freelance modeling, Mooney primarily worked as a real estate agent with Nest Seekers International.  “She was showing million-dollar homes and was in the process of closing a few,” Pauline said. CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP In an Instagram post featuring the hashtag #JUSTICEFORMALEESA, Pauline pleaded for answers and mourned her beloved sister.  “Never in a million years did I think I’d have to make this post and get justice for my one & only sister… my heart is crushed I can’t believe you won’t be here with us anymore,” she wrote. “This is so sick I can’t believe my big baby sister is gone… we will get justice for you my sister I promise you won’t be gone in vain!”

Literary legend haunted hotel for 53 years until neglected remains buried with family in NYC, say historians

Literary legend haunted hotel for 53 years until neglected remains buried with family in NYC, say historians

Dorothy Parker’s ghost spooked guests at New York City’s landmark Algonquin Hotel for more than 50 years — then suddenly went silent in 2020.  Local historians suggest the literary icon’s restless spirit desperately called in agony from the beyond, until her dishonored earthly remains were buried with respect beside her family in the Bronx. Among other indignities, Parker’s ashes reportedly spent 17 years stuffed in the filing cabinet of a law office in downtown Manhattan. MEET THE AMERICAN WHO CONJURED UP “LEGEND OF SLEEPY HOLLOW”: WASHINGTON IRVING, FIRST US CELEBRITY AUTHOR “You can certainly make the clam that, since Parker’s ashes have returned to New York City, she doesn’t haunt the Algonquin anymore,” Greg Young, host and producer of the “Bowery Boys” podcast, a popular chronicle of Gotham history, told Fox News Digital.  News of her spirit’s sudden silence came as a shock to Kevin Fitzpatrick, founder of the Dorothy Parker Society.  “Oh wow. That’s incredible,” Fitzpatrick said Saturday, after being informed by Fox News Digital that Parker’s ghost appears to have left the Algonquin after more than half a century of alleged hauntings.  Fitzpatrick personally delivered the author’s ashes to Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx for a long overdue proper burial beside her parents and grandparents in August 2020.  Parker was a member of the Algonquin Round Table, a collection of early 20th-century literary luminaries who gathered at the historic Midtown Manhattan hotel, which opened in 1902.  Harpo Marx, along with Pulitzer Prize- and Tony Award-winning playwright George S. Kaufman and essayist and Oscar-winning screenwriter Robert Benchley — perhaps best known today as the grandfather of “Jaws” author Peter Benchley — were all members of the what they dubbed “the Vicious Circle.” Parker carved out a place in literature with withering wit. “The first thing I do in the morning is brush my teeth and sharpen my tongue,” she said in one of her many oft-repeated quotes. ODDEST HOMES IN AMERICA INCLUDE THE ‘SMURF HOUSE’ AND ONE THAT’S ‘LEGALLY’ HAUNTED Parker died of a heart attack in 1967. Reports that her ghost was haunting guests followed soon after her death and continued for decades.  Many other spirits reportedly still haunt the hotel, too.  Fitzpatrick spent several hours in the hotel’s sub-sub-basement with paranormal investigator Doug McMillan in 2016, in response to decades of ghostly reports. “Investigators found all kinds of paranormal activity at the Algonquin,” Fitzpatrick said. “It was spook central.” Added ghost hunter McMillian, “There were definitely some unresolved issues manifesting themselves down there.”  A portrait of Algonquin Round Table members hangs over the hotel’s lobby restaurant. Children reported that the “mean woman” in the painting — Parker — told them to hush if they were being loud or unruly.  Reporter Kelly Conaboy of Gawker spent a night at the hotel in 2015 armed with an electromagnetic field reader, Ouija board and crystal pendulum to communicate with the dead. She asked the 30 late members of the Algonquin Round Table if they were present.  Eight of them, Conaboy reported, said yes. The reporter determined only that Parker “may be” present. Elle Decor named the Algonquin one of 30 “most haunted hotels in the world” in 2018, singling out Parker’s spirit.  “When renovations were made to the hotel’s attic, unexplained noises were reported coming from the empty space,” the outlet reported, “and a photograph of Parker even flew off the wall, shattering.” MOM’S CREEPY-COOL TAYLOR SWIFT HALLOWEEN DISPLAY GOES VIRAL ON TIKTOK Parker’s outcries, observers now believe, were a call by the author’s restless spirit to be reunited with her family. Parker was a celebrity of American letters. She was among the first contributors to The New Yorker, helping to turn it into one of the nation’s leading periodicals of literature; she wrote the lyrics to Bing Crosby’s hit “I Wished on the Moon”; and she left an imprint on Hollywood, too. Parker was one of the screenwriters behind “A Star is Born.” Her version appeared on the silver screen in 1937 and has been remade several times.  She was also famous for her appetite for alcohol and for a lascivious lifestyle.  “I like to have a martini. Two at the very most,” she wrote in one famous ode. “After three I’m under the table, after four I’m under my host.” Her clever quotes are often cited in toasts today. And she’s the namesake of Dorothy Parker Gin from New York Distilling Co., a popular spirit in the Big Apple.  “Regularly seated at the famed Algonquin Round Table, she occupied the city’s cultural and intellectual center stage,” the distiller proudly points out on its website. But Parker died childless of a heart attack on June 7, 1967.  Despite her celebrity in life, her fate in death was that of a pauper. She willed her assets to Martin Luther King Jr. — a man she said she never met but admired. The Civil Rights leader was assassinated just 10 months after Parker died.  Upon his death, according to her will, her assets were transferred to the NAACP. CONNECTICUT MOMS PROWL NEIGHBORHOOD AS ZOMBIES TO RAISE MONEY FOR BREAST CANCER RESEARCH Parker’s ashes, after nearly two decades of anonymity in a filing cabinet, were placed in 1988 in a modest memorial next to a parking lot on the grounds of NAACP headquarters in a Baltimore office park — a city where she had no affiliation, said Fitzpatrick.  He and members of the Dorothy Parker Society raised funds to have the ashes disinterred and returned to New York City. “We put the urn in a pine box and took the Amtrak back from Baltimore to Penn Station,” the Manhattan resident said.  “I had a gin and tonic on the train in her honor.” Fitzpatrick founded the Dorothy Parker Society merely as a fan in 1998. Given his scant connection to the author, “It was an out-of-body experience having her box next to me knowing it was Dorothy Parker’s last ride.” Parker, he said, then took an Uber uptown “and hung out with me and my family for a few days watching Netflix.”  Parker was finally buried beside her parents and grandparents in Woodlawn Cemetery on what would have been her 127th birthday — Aug. 22, 2020.  CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR OUR LIFESTYLE NEWSLETTER Fitzpatrick and a representative of the NAACP hosted a simple ceremony attended by only 10 people at the height of COVID-19 restrictions.  Fitzpatrick and society members raised additional funds to place a memorial over Parker’s resting place in a slightly larger more celebratory ceremony in Aug. 2021. The Algonquin Hotel remains haunted by other spirits, according to various reports and legends.  But no longer by Parker. “These ghost stories become real because people retell them and believe them,” said Young of the “Bowery Boys” podcast.  He said he is skeptical of the Algonquin Hotel’s haunted history. But “it’s definitely a coincidence that reports of Dorothy haunting the hotel” have ended since she returned home to her family, he admitted.  For more Lifestyle articles, visit foxnews.com/lifestyle.

On this day in history, October 30, 1974, Muhammad Ali wins ‘The Rumble in the Jungle’

On this day in history, October 30, 1974, Muhammad Ali wins 'The Rumble in the Jungle'

Boxer Muhammad Ali was declared the heavyweight champion of the world after he defeated George Foreman in the “Rumble in the Jungle” on this day in history, Oct. 30, 1974. The “Rumble in the Jungle” took place in Kinshasa, Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo) — and featured 32-year-old Ali and 25-year-old Foreman. Ali was previously the heavyweight champion, but he lost his title in 1967 after he refused to join the military.  After publicly announcing he’d joined the Nation of Islam in 1964, he tried unsuccessfully in 1965 to apply as a conscientious objector. ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY, OCTOBER 29, 1964, GEMS ARE STOLEN DURING THE ‘JEWEL HEIST OF THE CENTURY’ Ali was convicted of draft evasion in the U.S. Armed Forces and was sentenced to five years in prison, but his sentence was overturned by the Supreme Court. His boxing license and world championship were, however, suspended in the meantime. Ali returned to boxing in October 1970 — and in 1971 he lost to Joe Frazier in the “Fight of the Century.”  Ali later defeated Frazier, which meant he could compete against then-champion George Foreman.  The “Rumble in the Jungle” was staged by the country of Zaire, according to the History Channel’s website.  In a move to boost the country’s tourism industry, Zaire’s president Mobutu Sese Seko personally paid Ali and Foreman $5 million before the fight, the same source noted.  For Ali, the fight was about more than personal glory.  ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY, FEB. 25, 1964, A YOUNG MUHAMMAD ALI KNOCKS OUT SONNY LISTON TO WIN FIRST WORLD TITLE “I wanted to establish a relationship between American blacks and Africans,” he later said. “The fight was about racial problems, Vietnam. All of that,” he said. He added, “‘The Rumble in the Jungle’ was a fight that made the whole country more conscious.” The fight started at 4:30 a.m. local time, so it could be broadcast live to American television viewers during primetime hours.  Even with the pre-dawn start, 60,000 people came to the outdoor Stade du Mai 20 to watch the two boxing legends fight, said the History Channel.  Millions around the world watched the broadcast of the fight. Going into the match, Foreman was undefeated — and seven years Ali’s junior, he was the heavy favorite.  Betting lines were set at Ali 4:1, notes Encyclopedia Britannica.  ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY, APRIL 28, 1967, MUHAMMAD ALI REFUSES TO SERVE MILITARY AT HEIGHT OF VIETNAM WAR Ahead of the fight, underdog Ali was not shy in boasting that he would defeat Foreman. Speaking at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City, Ali recited a poem about his fighting prowess.  “I’ve wrestled with alligators. I’ve tussled with a whale. I done handcuffed lightning, and throw thunder in jail,” said Ali. “You know I’m bad. Just last week, I murdered a rock, injured a stone, hospitalized a brick. I’m so mean, I make medicine sick.” He also adapted his trademark “float like a butterfly, sting like a bee” catchphrase to include a jab at Foreman. “Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee. His hands can’t hit what his eyes can’t see. Now you see me, now you don’t. George thinks he will, but I know he won’t,” said Ali ahead of the bout.  Early on in the “Rumble in the Jungle,” things did not seem as if they were going in Ali’s favor.  During the first few rounds, Ali pretended he was stuck on the ropes of the boxing ring; Foreman then effectively tired himself out by taking repeated punches at Ali. CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR OUR LIFESTYLE NEWSLETTER Ali’s trainers called this the “rope-a-dope” strategy because Ali was a “dope” for even trying it, said the History Channel.  Ali’s novel “rope-a-dope” tactic proved successful — and the risky endeavor paid off.  Foreman’s punches began to become less and less intense as the fight went on, and by the fifth round of the fight, he was visibly fading. During the eighth round, Ali seized the opportunity and “went on the attack,” said Encyclopedia Britannica — and knocked out Foreman.  With just two seconds left in the eighth round, Ali was declared the winner.  With the victory, Ali was once again the heavyweight boxing champion of the world.  He would reign until Feb. 15, 1978, when he lost to Leon Spinks. Ali retired from boxing in 1981, shortly before his 40th birthday.  His final record was 56 wins, 5 losses.  He died on June 3, 2016, at the age of 74, at a Phoenix hospital.  He was buried in his native Louisville, Kentucky.  A spokesperson said Ali died of septic shock “due to unspecified natural causes.” The boxing legend spent the last hour of his life surrounded by his family. Ohio social worker accused of having sex with 13-year-old client, faces witness intimidation charges

A 24-year-old social worker in Ohio who is charged with having sex with a 13-year-old boy she was assigned to counsel, now faces additional charges for allegedly trying to intimidate the boy’s family. Columbus, Ohio ABC station WSYX reported that Payton Shires appeared before a judge last week and became emotional as the charges were read to her. Court records show a warrant was issued for Shires’ arrest on Oct. 26. And she was arraigned in court on Oct. 28 on charges of intimidating a witness by force or threat. OHIO SOCIAL WORKER, 24, CHARGED WITH HAVING SEX WITH 13-YEAR-OLD CLIENT: REPORTS During the hearing, prosecutors said Shires showed up at the 13-year-old boy’s home, with a gun. While there, she threatened to kill herself, the station reported, and blamed the family for “ruining her life.” On Oct. 6, Payton was arrested without incident and admitted to a sexual relationship during a three-way call between Shires, the boy’s mother and police, the Columbus Dispatch reported. DRUNK WOMAN WHO GROPED 13-YEAR-OLD VICTIM GIVEN SHOCKINGLY LIGHT PUNISHMENT BY COURT Shires was previously employed by the National Youth Advocate Program (NYAP), which provides counseling, social work and advocacy for families involved in the foster care system, the report said. It is unclear when she stopped working for the organization. The boy’s mom called police on Sept. 27 after finding suspicious text messages on the 13-year-old’s cellphone from Shires. ELEMENTARY SCHOOL TEACHER ACCUSED OF RAPING STUDENT IMPLIES SHE’S PREGNANT WITH HIS CHILD: REPORT When police searched the phone, they found a video of the teen and Shires engaged in sexual conduct, according to court records. The teen reportedly told detectives he had sex with Shires multiple times in September at different locations in Columbus. She was charged with unlawful sexual conduct with a minor and held on $500,000 bond. Because of the new charges, Shires’s bond has been revoked, and she is expected to remain behind bars until her next court appearance scheduled for Nov. 6.
