I am a neurosurgeon who specializes in the treatment of acute strokes, brain bleeds, and tumors. Every second counts for my patients, and I am determined to help as many as I can. This Thanksgiving dinner, I left my family to operate on a patient with a life-threatening stroke. This is what you need to know about strokes and how artificial intelligence is helping surgeons like me save even more patients. Stroke is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide and has remained a formidable challenge in the realm of health care.  WHAT IS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)? Not only does stroke rob us of our loved ones and shatter families, the impact of stroke from a socioeconomic perspective is also staggering. The CDC estimates that between 2018 and 2019, the economic burden of stroke in the U.S. rose to approximately $56.5 billion.  I have witnessed many advances in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with stroke with glacial progress over the years. However, with the advent of artificial intelligence (AI), we have a new powerful ally. Many of the AI tools physicians employ have drastically improved the fight against stroke, yet there is no substitute for the human element. “Time is brain” is the rallying cry for health care teams treating stroke victims. It is not coincidence that we use the acronym FAST, which stands for Face drooping, Arm/leg weakness, Speech difficulty, and Time to remind people of the signs of a stroke and to seek immediate medical assistance.  When I received the emergency stroke call this Thanksgiving, I sprang into action and left my home in a flurry, passing the baton of turkey carving to my eldest son. Why the urgency? Because early intervention is crucial for patient outcomes.  While Thanksgiving dinner is my favorite family tradition, this patient needed help fast. Within minutes, the team and I brought the patient to the operating room to restore blood flow to his brain. His symptoms began to improve immediately. TALK THERAPY? AI MAY DETECT ‘EARLIEST SYMPTOMS’ OF DEMENTIA BY ANALYZING SPEECH PATTERNS By coupling what we have already learned and developed, AI algorithms have demonstrated remarkable capabilities in expediting successful treatment. AI can analyze brain scans, such as computed tomography (CT) to not only detect the presence of a stroke but also classify its type.  The ability to make such critical differentiations helps guide physicians and nurses to select the most appropriate course of action, whether it be administering clot-busting medications, performing a lifesaving intervention by retrieving the blood clot out of vessels, or preparing for open brain surgery. Moreover, AI assists in predicting the response to these specific interventions. This level of precision marks a significant departure from the one-size-fits-all approach, heralding a new era in stroke care where treatments are as unique as the patients themselves. This means, unfortunately, there are times I need to discuss with families that despite all our current neurosurgical advances, there are no effective interventions to be offered. AI BABIES: NEW TECHNOLOGY IS HELPING FERTILITY DOCS CHOOSE THE BEST EMBRYOS FOR IVF While there is no question that AI has propelled effective treatment for patients with stroke, there are certainly some limitations. It is not uncommon that given constraints of medical imaging, the AI algorithm may interpret the data incorrectly. Not only have I been involved in cases where AI has indicated surgery should be performed when objectively there was nothing to operate upon, the opposite scenario also arises. It is a precarious situation to call a team for emergency surgery when the AI platform instructs no intervention is required.  As a neurosurgeon, I am too familiar with the anxiety created when AI recommends no intervention, yet surgery is the best chance of salvation for the patient. Imagine the captain of a large commercial airplane performing an emergency maneuver against the recommendations of the flight AI, knowing that hundreds of passengers’ lives onboard hang in the balance. Decades of training and experience along with the degree of self-assurance required for these moments is surreal. Many of the AI platforms used in the treatment of acute stroke require a third-party software program outside of the hospital. In this world of malicious cyber-attacks committed against hospitals by terrorists aiming for financial gain, it is essential that patient data transfer is completely protected. Ensuring responsible use of AI in stroke care is essential. The synergy between AI and physicians, nurses and physical therapists involved in stroke care is poised for further advancements. I am personally excited to witness how AI technologies become more integrated into the health care ecosystem, and how AI can facilitate, not replace, the human element.  We must remember that, at the end of the day, we are humans treating other humans, not simply programs analyzing algorithmic equations. Before I left my home on this Thanksgiving to treat the patient suffering a stroke, I reminded my boys that while I needed to leave, I would come home. And as promised, I returned home late in the evening. My boys and my wife sat with me and together we enjoyed a wonderful dinner. JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon on Wednesday urged Democrats to back GOP presidential hopeful Nikki Haley as an alternative to frontrunner Donald Trump — the latest Wall Street backing for Haley which has drawn criticism from her primary rivals. “If you’re a very liberal Democrat, I urge you to help Nikki Haley, too. Give them a choice on the Republican side that might be better than Trump,” Dimon said at the 2023 DealBook Summit, according to Politico. Haley has been gaining significant ground in the GOP primary polls in recent weeks, although she and others remain well behind former President Trump. A $500,000 settlement has been reached in a lawsuit over truck crash that sent a chemical into a West Virginia creek, according to a published report. WEST VIRGINIA TRUCKING COMPANY SUED OVER CHEMICAL SPILL INTO CREEK The Kanawha County Commission will get half of that and will decide how to spend it in future meetings, the Charleston Gazette-Mail reported. Commissioner Lance Wheeler said part of the total will go toward recouping taxpayer costs of litigation and testing. The county sued a trucking company and the driver over the spill last year that dumped 3,000 gallons of the material into a tributary of Paint Creek, killing more than 30,000 fish. The chemical involved is a compound commonly used in cleaning detergents. The spill occurred on the West Virginia Turnpike near Pax. MAN WHO DROWNED IN A VIRGINIA CREEK IDENTIFIED AS US NAVY SAILOR The commission plans to continue to test to make sure all the chemical is gone from the area, Wheeler said.

Fifteen people were sent to the hospital following a crash between a fire rescue truck responding to a medical call, a pickup truck and a small bus in Florida. Marion County Fire Rescue (MCFR) said that just before 9 a.m. on Tuesday, “units were dispatched to reports of a motor vehicle accident involving an MCFR Rescue, a pickup truck and a small bus at the intersection of SW 90th Street and SW 80th Avenue.” Multiple people who called 911 said that the MCFR Rescue vehicle was rolled over on its side after being hit. The accident happened near the MCFR Friendship Fire Station #21, according to a department Facebook post, so firefighters arrived at the scene within one minute of being dispatched and immediately began assisting patients from all three vehicles. FLORIDA POLICE TRUCK CRASHES INTO CAR ON WAY TO EMERGENCY, 5-YEAR-OLD GIRL DIES Preliminary investigation details showed the bus and pickup were headed south on SW 80th Avenue when the ambulance entered an intersection with its lights and siren on, FOX 35 Orlando reported. Before the ambulance was able to make it through the intersection, it was reportedly struck by the bus and pickup truck, sending it on its side. A Massachusetts angler has established a new fishing record in the state of North Carolina. Matthew Frattasio was aboard Riptide Charters, under the direction of Captain Terry Nugent, when he reeled in a 26-pound, 15.6-ounce almaco jack near Morehead City, according to a press release issued by the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ). Frattasio was fishing in waters that reached depths of 80 feet. CONNECTICUT ANGLER REELS IN MONSTER FISH TO SET NEW STATE RECORD: ‘TAUGZILLA’ The fish was caught using “live menhaden and 50-pound braid on a Daiwa Saltist MQ 14000 reel paired with a Hogy Tuna jigging rod,” the press release continued. There is no previous record for the almaco jack in North Carolina, but this fish is a large catch when compared to some other state records. Frattasio’s catch measured 36.4 inches from the tip of the nose to the fork in the tail and 26 inches around, the DEQ shared in its release. Author Louisa May Alcott, who portrayed liberated, thoughtful and independent women at a time when her message conflicted with social norms, was born in the Germantown section of Philadelphia on this day in history, Nov. 29, 1832. Her most famous book, “Little Women,” published in 1868, has proven one of the most enduring and beloved tales in American letters.  It has been retold numerous times on stage and screen, including in seven different Hollywood adaptations.  ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY, NOVEMBER 28, 1925, GRAND OLE OPRY DEBUTS ON WSM RADIO IN NASHVILLE The 1933 film version of “Little Women” starred Katharine Hepburn. The 1994 version featured Winona Ryder, Kirsten Dunst, Claire Danes, Susan Sarandon, Christian Bale and Gabriel Byrne.  The most recent film adaptation, in 2019, starred Meryl Streep, Emma Watson and Saoirse Ronan.  Alcott “created colorful relatable characters … [and] introduced readers to educated strong female heroines,” says the National Women’s History Museum.  “Her writing style greatly impacted American literature.” Alcott’s father, Amos Bronson Alcott, was a teacher, writer and transcendentalist philosopher, while her mother Abigail (May) was born in Boston to the prominent Quincy and Sewall families — and became one of the leading suffragists and activists of her time.  ADOPTED AS A CHILD, TEXAS WOMAN IS NOW HELPING OTHERS FIND HOPE AND FEEL LOVED AT CHRISTMAS The family moved to Concord, Massachusetts, in 1840, where Alcott was taught by or befriended the area’s literary elite.  Among them were Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Julia Ward Howe and Henry David Thoreau. Former “CSI: Miami” star Evan Ellingson’s cause of death earlier this month was revealed to be an accidental fentanyl overdose, the San Bernardino County coroner’s office confirmed to Fox News Digital on Tuesday.  His manner of death was ruled an accident, according to the coroner’s death register.  Ellingson, 35, was found dead in his bedroom in Fontana, California, on Nov. 5.  His father previously told Fox News Digital that he had struggled with drug addiction for years, “but was doing really well recently so we are all in shock and devastated right now,” Michael Ellingson said at the time.  MATTHEW PERRY’S STEPFATHER KEITH MORRISON MAKES PUBLIC PLEA ONE MONTH AFTER HIS DEATH Ellingson is perhaps best known for playing Kyle Harmon, the son of David Caruso’s Detective Horatio Caine, across 18 episodes on “CSI: Miami.” His last credited appearance on the show was in 2010. A magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck near the eastern Caribbean island of Barbados on Tuesday. No immediate damage was reported. Georgia Senate Republicans are proposing a new map that would create two Black-majority voting districts, but would probably retain Republicans’ 33-23 edge in the General Assembly’s upper chamber, in an effort to fix a map a judge said illegally dilutes Black votes. The proposed districts, released Monday, would increase the number of Black majority districts by eliminating two white-majority districts currently represented by Democrats. State Sens. Jason Esteves and Elena Parent, both of Atlanta, would find themselves living in Black-majority districts if the redrawn map goes through. A special session on redrawing state legislative and congressional districts is scheduled to begin Wednesday after U.S. District Judge Steve Jones in October ordered Georgia to draw Black majorities in one additional congressional district, two additional state Senate districts, and five additional state House districts. JUDGE SAYS GEORGIA’S CONGRESSIONAL AND LEGISLATIVE DISTRICTS ARE DISCRIMINATORY AND MUST BE REDRAWN APPEALS COURT SAYS GEORGIA MAY ELECT UTILITY PANEL STATEWIDE, REJECTING A RULING FOR DISTRICT VOTING It’s unclear whether Jones would accept the map if it passes. He ordered two additional Black Senate districts in the southern part of metro Atlanta, finding 10 state Senate districts illegal under Section 2 of the federal Voting Rights Act. Monday’s Republican proposal left two of those districts untouched — a district in Clayton and Fayette counties, represented by Democrat Valencia Seay of Riverdale, and the district stretching across Fayette, Spalding, Pike and Lamar counties, represented by Republican Marty Harbin of Tyrone. Some other districts declared illegal saw changes that did little to affect their racial or partisan balance. By contrast, Republicans propose redrawing a number of Democratic-held districts in Fulton and Cobb counties the judge didn’t single out. Overall, it appears no current senators would be drawn into the same district under the plan. That’s important because under Georgia law, state legislators must have lived in their districts for a year before they are elected. Because 2024’s election is less than a year away, it’s too late for anyone to move to another district to run. Their drastically different districts could invite Democratic primary challenges to Parent and Esteves. Parent is the second-ranking Democrat in the Senate and Esteves is the treasurer of the state Democratic Party. Parent declined comment Monday, saying she would speak Tuesday when Democrats introduce their own proposal. That plan is unlikely to pass the majority Republican legislature, but could become part of legal argument over whether lawmakers’ proposed remedy meets the terms of Jones’ order. Ken Lawler, chair of Fair Districts GA, which seeks to reduce partisan gerrymandering, said that he thought the districts met Jones’ goal of creating additional Black majority districts. “With respect to complying, they get a pass,” Lawler said. However, he said Republicans shouldn’t change other districts to try to retain their current majority, saying those were like other mid-decade changes Georgia Republicans have undertaken in recent decades to pad their control. GEORGIA TO APPEAL CONGRESSIONAL, LEGISLATIVE REDISTRICTING ORDER No House or congressional plans were released Monday, although the House Committee on Reapportionment and Redistricting said it would hold a Wednesday hearing on a new House plan. A new Black-majority congressional district, combined with similar rulings in other Southern states, could help Democrats reclaim the U.S. House in 2024. New legislative districts could narrow Republican majorities in Georgia. It’s unclear if the GOP can legally prevent Democrats from gaining a congressional seat, along the lines of what they’re seeking to do in the state Senate. Jones wrote in his order that Georgia can’t fix its problems “by eliminating minority opportunity districts elsewhere.” The state has pledged to appeal Jones’ order. If the state later wins an appeal, Georgia could have new districts in 2024 and revert to current lines in 2026. Republicans control nine of Georgia’s 14 congressional seats and 102 of the 180 state House seats.

The Grand Ole Opry, the world’s longest running broadcast, debuted on WSM radio in Nashville on this day in history, Nov. 28, 1925.  “The showcase was originally named the Barn Dance, after a Chicago radio program called the National Barn Dance that had begun broadcasting the previous year,” according to History.com.  “Impressed by the popularity of the Chicago-based National Barn Dance, producers at WSM radio in Nashville decided to create their own version of the show to cater to southern audiences who could not receive the Chicago signal.” ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY, NOVEMBER 27, 1924, THE FIRST MACY’S THANKSGIVING DAY PARADE IS HELD IN NYC The Barn Dance was renamed the Grand Ole Opry two years later, courtesy of an unscripted moment of on-air inspiration by host George D. Hay on Dec. 10, 1927.  “Following an NBC broadcast of Walter Damrosch’s Music Appreciation Hour [a classical music program], Hay proclaimed on-air, ‘For the past hour we have been listening to the music taken largely from the Grand Opera, but from now on we will present the grand ole opry,'” writes the Opry website in its history of the moment that reshaped the future of American music.  Hay’s turn of phrase, “grand ole opry,” affecting a rural southern American accent, resonated with listeners and proved an instant sensation.  The Barn Dance broadcast was soon renamed the Grand Ole Opry — and has been going strong ever since.  MEET THE AMERICAN WHO FOUNDED THE GRAND OLE OPRY: ‘REMARKABLE VISIONARY GEORGE D. HAY Hay “was a remarkable visionary and colorful romantic who played a vital role in the commercializing and promotion of country music,” writes the Country Music Hall of Fame. The Grand Ole Opry was originally broadcast from the fifth-floor radio station studio of the National Life & Accident Insurance Company in Nashville. The growth of the Opry surged in 1932, when WSM, the first clear-channel station in Tennessee, added a 50,000-watt transmitter.  The new technology made WSM “a nation-spanning giant,” says the station’s website. JOHNNY CASH IS KING IN NASHVILLE: HIS TUNES, LEGACY AND LEGEND RULE THE MUSIC CITY Now, the Grand Ole Opry could be heard across large swaths of the country, far beyond its Nashville home.  It became a national institution. The broadcast grew so popular that it moved to the Ryman Auditorium in downtown Nashville in 1943.  The Grand Ole Opry built its own theater and country-music campus, Opryland, in 1974, about 10 miles east of the city center.  The Opryland theater is still a showcase for American songcraft today, ranging from tradition Appalachian fiddlers to the top hit-makers in contemporary country music. “Both the Grand Ole Opry and the National Barn Dance aired on Saturday nights and featured folk music, fiddling, and the relatively new genre of country-western music,” reports History.com. CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR OUR LIFESTYLE NEWSLETTER “Both shows created a growing audience for a uniquely American style of music and were launching grounds for many of America’s most-loved musicians — the singing cowboy Gene Autry got his first big break on the National Barn Dance.” Johnny Cash, Loretta Lynn and Dolly Parton all generated national acclaim from early-career performances at the Grand Ole Opry.  A statue of Lynn, who died last month, stands outside Ryman Auditorium today.  Cash, as an unknown teenager in 1950, famously met future wife June Carter, already a celebrated country-music performer, backstage at Ryman Auditorium.  Their relationship would become one of the most celebrated romances in American pop-culture history.  Guinness World Records recognized the Grand Ole Opry as the world’s longest-running broadcast in 2004.  The unique name Grand Ole Opry, created in a moment of inspiration by host Hay, solidified the broadcast’s rural American identity that’s been so critical to its success. “Hay had a very romantic and nostalgic vision of rural life, music and culture, and he carefully cultivated that in the early Opry programming,” Opry archivist Jen Larson told Fox News Digital. A man was arrested in Maryland on Monday for the deaths of a woman and a teenage girl who were found stabbed to death in Florida over the weekend.  Jean Pierre Ojeda Salazar, 25, was taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service, the Tampa Police Department said, Fox Tampa reported. He was found in Maryland a day after the double murder, authorities said.  FLORIDA MAN CONFESSES TO MURDERING BROTHER, KICKS DETECTIVE: ‘I JUST KILLED MY BROTHER’ On Sunday, officers responded to the 14000 block of Riveredge Drive and found a 14-year-old girl with multiple stab wounds. They also found the second victim, a 35-year-old woman, with similar injuries, according to TPD officials.  The woman was pronounced dead at the scene, the teen was taken to a hospital where she later died.  Salazar stabbed both victims after an argument with the woman, police said. He fled the apartment complex where the deaths occurred in a sedan, which was later found abandoned, authorities said.  He was arrested on suspicion of multiple charges, including first-degree and second-degree murder.  Salazar was taken to the Maryland County Correctional Facility and is awaiting extradition to Tampa.

“The View” co-host Sunny Hostin said Monday it was “unfortunate” people have “taken such sides” in the ongoing Israel-Palestinian conflict and took an implicit shot at the show for only showing footage of Jewish family reunifications. The ABC talk show opened Monday with footage of hostages who had been freed by Hamas, several of them young children, as well as a clip of President Biden discussing four-year-old Abigail’s ordeal, who was taken prisoner after her parents were murdered by the terrorist group. She and dozens of other hostages were freed after Israel released Palestinian prisoners accused of various criminal offenses during a temporary cease-fire. Hostin appeared irked with the show for only showing the tearful reunions of Jewish families. “I think that it’s unfortunate that people have taken such sides here because this is something that has been going on for decades, right?” she said. “And we did show the reunification of Jewish families, and I think that was really important, especially little Abigail. I’m a mother. I can’t imagine having your child taken from you and held hostage by a terrorist organization, but we – also, there were, you know, 76 Palestinians, including women and children, that were being held in Israel with no understanding of why they were being held, no administrative hearings. And so those reunifications are something that we should also be looking at and talking about.” WHOOPI GOLDBERG SURPRISES CO-HOST BY SAYING ‘WE DESERVE WHAT WE GET’ IF TRUMP RE-ELECTED She went on to say she watches Al Jazeera, BBC and other news outlets as part of getting her media from “everywhere,” while referencing the recent killings of Palestinian-Americans stateside and hoping for a two-state solution to the longstanding conflict. “There is media in Gaza because I’ve seen these videos… I think what’s really important is what happens after this pause because a cease-fire apparently is a bad word now,” she said. “So what happens after this humanitarian pause? Who is in charge? Who isn’t in charge? Are we going to continue seeing this devastation in Gaza? Are we going to continue seeing these three Palestinian kids going — college kids, one who knows my son’s friend, OK? When is that going to stop? When are we going to really meet at the table and understand that all lives in this situation are being affected, and we must have a two-state solution? We must have that.” Co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin said Hostin rightfully called Hamas a terrorist organization, but she chided Hostin’s remarks about not wanting to take sides. “I do think that you can take sides,” she said. “You can support the innocent Palestinian people and the innocent Israelis caught in the crossfire, but you can take a fundamental, as we all have at this table, stance against Hamas, a terrorist group that made this happen on October 7.” Hostin, one of the show’s several left-wing hosts, has been consistently critical of Israel and its tactics since the conflict began, at one point accusing it of war crimes. Griffin noted “we were at a cease-fire” before October 7, when Hamas terrorists stormed into southern Israel and killed 1,200 people and took hundreds of hostages. Israel has since responded with a bombardment of Gaza that has forced Hamas to negotiate the temporary cease-fire, for which it has received back Palestinian prisoners accused by Israel of various crimes. The Times of Israel reported the released convicts, “all women or young men, had all been charged with or convicted of terror-related crimes, including attempted murder.” “The View” didn’t reply to a request for comment.
