Wisconsin man sentenced to prison for homicide after burying ex-girlfriend under furniture pile

Wisconsin man sentenced to prison for homicide after burying ex-girlfriend under furniture pile

A Madison man has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for killing his former girlfriend, who suffocated after he buried her beneath a pile of furniture, clothing and other items inside her home. A Dane County judge sentenced Gregg Raether, 58, on Tuesday for the death of Patricia McCullough, 55, the Wisconsin State Journal reported. Raether was convicted by a jury in September of first-degree reckless homicide and other charges. Officers who were called to McCullough’s home in September 2021 after she had not been heard from for weeks found her decomposed body beneath a pile of dresser drawers, shelving, televisions, clothing and other objects in her bedroom. WISCONSIN MAN AGREES TO PLEAD GUILTY TO FIREBOMBING OFFICES OF PRO-LIFE GROUP MADISON POLICE REVEAL HOW THEY CAUGHT UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN SEX ASSAULT SUSPECT She suffered crushing, suffocating injuries that ultimately killed her, authorities said. Evidence presented at Raether’s trial indicated he returned to McCollough’s home after her death to search for valuables, including a rifle. Circuit Judge John Hyland noted during Tuesday’s sentencing hearing that Raether’s shoeprint was found on the screen of a television in the pile. “The bottom line is, the court is confronted with an act which caused the death with utter disregard for human life, and then a continuing conduct of then literally walking all over the deceased body of Ms. McCollough,” Hyland said. Raether did not speak in court. He instructed his attorneys to limit their brief argument to a request for leniency, an assertion that he maintains his innocence and that he loved McCollough and still loves her.

Timeline of decades-long Israeli-Arab, Palestinian conflict

Timeline of decades-long Israeli-Arab, Palestinian conflict

Israel’s first war with neighboring Arab countries began on the same day the Jewish state was re-established on May 14, 1948. Jewish sovereignty ended 2,000 years earlier, in the year 70 A.D. at the hands of the Roman conquest. The first Jewish commonwealth dates back 3,000 years to the time of King David. That war saw surrounding Arab nations – Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, Transjordan and Iraq, (with additional forces sent by Saudi Arabia and Yemen) –attack the fledgling state. The war led to the displacement of some 750,000 Arabs. At the same time, Arab nations began expelling hundreds of thousands of their Jewish populations, many of whom would settle in Israel. Today’s war in Gaza is a continuation of the many wars and conflicts that have ensued since. Here is a timeline of the Israeli-Arab conflict: SURVIVOR OF HAMAS TERRORISTS HID IN A GREENHOUSE FOR 16 HOURS WITH NO FOOD, WATER: ‘I FEEL LIKE I’M GONNA DIE’ A majority of United Nations member states vote in the General Assembly on a partition plan to divide British Mandated Palestine into a Jewish state and an Arab state. While the Jews accepted the plan for two states, the Arabs rejected it. Israel proclaimed independence, re-establishing the modern Jewish state and was immediately attacked by a coalition of Arab states, the first of a series of Arab-Israeli wars. Against all odds, the Israelis fight off the Arab armies in the War of Independence. Egypt’s President Gamal Abdel Nasser nationalizes the Suez Canal, which would result in Israeli, British and French military action. The French and Brits wanted to depose Nasser while Israel wanted to regain access through the Straights of Tiran. An agreement facilitated by the U.S. and Soviet Union resolved the conflict, but the canal remained closed until 1957 due to sunken ships. Nasser remained in power.  In 1964, some three years before Israel took over territory won in the 1967 war, the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) was formed, as well as additional smaller groups, calling for a return to what they consider their homeland. Their aim was the destruction of the State of Israel. Buoyed on by its leader Yasser Arafat, the PLO launched deadly terror attacks against Israel. Egypt’s Nasser tells the United Nations that its peacekeeping force needs to leave the Sinai, with the aim of making it easier to attack Israel. Egypt once again blocks off the Straights of Tiran, which Israel viewed as an act of war.  IRANIANS ARE ISRAELIS’ ‘GREATEST DEFENDERS’ DESPITE REGIME’S PRAISE OF HAMAS: ISRAELI JOURNALIST Not wasting any time, the Israelis launched a surprise attack in what would be known as the Six-Day War.  As a result, Israel seizes control of the Gaza Strip, the Sinai, the West Bank, (known by Israelis as Judea and Samaria), the Golan Heights, and Jordanian-controlled East Jerusalem, thereby fulfilling the millennia-long Jewish dream of unifying the holy city as the capital of the Jewish state. Israel’s victory against the Arabs was hailed as one of the most significant victories in military history. Following the Six-Day War, with no serious peace agreement reached between the warring parties, the fighting between Israel and Arab nations continued, evolving into a three-year War of Attrition.  The tension is underscored by the Three No’s declaration made by the Arab League in September 1967 in Khartoum, Sudan: No peace, No recognition, and No negotiations with Israel. Arab nations, led by Egypt and Syria, launch a surprise attack on Israel on the holiest day of the year for the Jewish people, Yom Kippur. The initial Arab advance is met with a strong Israeli counteroffensive. The conflict resulted in heavy casualties on both sides, with Israel fighting back and winning a decisive victory. President Nixon ordered a mass airlift of tanks, ammunition and equipment that is credited with making a big difference in aiding Israel to win the war. The Camp David Accords, brokered by U.S. President Jimmy Carter in 1978, laid the groundwork for a subsequent peace agreement between Egypt’s President Anwar Sadat and Israel’s Prime Minister Menachem Begin. 1979 Ayatollah Khomeini seizes power in Iran’s Islamic revolution, paving the way for a new hostile power. The regime holds 98 Americans hostage for 444 days after protesters stormed the U.S. embassy in Tehran. The Iranian regime refers to the U.S. as the Great Satan and Israel the little Satan and starts a campaign of terror against U.S. and Israeli interests. The first Lebanon war was launched by Israel to stop Palestinian terrorists attacking communities in northern Israel. The decision to invade Lebanon followed the attempted assassination of Israel’s ambassador in London by Palestinian terrorists. The war lasted more than three months, with Israeli troops reaching as far as the outskirts of Beirut, leading to the exodus of thousands of PLO members, including Arafat. Despite the withdrawal of the PLO from Lebanon, Israeli troops continued to monitor activities in Lebanon. On Sept. 16, in coordination with the Israeli army, a Lebanese Christian militia group known as the Phalange enters two Palestinian refugee camps, Sabra and Shatila. The Phalange mission was to wipe out terrorists in the camps, but instead they killed many civilians in a notorious massacre.  Reports vary on the number of people killed, from 460 to 3,500. Israel held a commission of inquiry following outrage from the Israeli public and found that Israel was partly responsible for the massacre. It also resulted in the firing of the IDF chief of staff and led to the resignation of then Defense Minister Ariel Sharon. A suicide bomber kills 241 U.S. servicemen, mostly Marines, after an Iran directed terror attack carried out by Hezbollah targeted the U.S. Marine barracks in Beirut. The U.S. was there as part of a multinational peacekeeping force. Shortly after the attack, a French peacekeeping mission was also targeted, killing 58 French paratroopers.  Israel maintains its occupation zone in southern Lebanon after pulling back from a line further north, controlling the area with the help of the South Lebanon Army. Palestinians launched a national uprising, known as the Intifada, against Israel’s occupation of the West Bank and Gaza. This leads to a heavy Israeli military crackdown, resulting in clashes and many casualties on both sides. Hamas is founded around the same time of the first Intifada in 1987. According to The Associated Press, the acronym for Hamas in Arabic is “the Islamic Resistance Movement,” in recognition of its ties to the Muslim Brotherhood. The terror group’s founding charter calls for the destruction of the Jewish state. FATHER SPEAKS OUT AS SON REMAINS MISSING IN ISRAEL The Oslo Accords, consisting of two key agreements, were signed between Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO). These agreements lay the groundwork for limited Palestinian self-rule in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, establishing the Palestinian Authority to manage administrative affairs in some areas. The PLO also agreed to renounce violence and recognize the Jewish state. While the PLO gains recognition as a negotiating partner from Israel and the United States, critical issues like Israeli settlements in the West Bank and the status of Jerusalem, which Palestinians hope will become their future capital, remain unresolved.  On Nov. 4, as progress toward peace between Israelis and Palestinians continues, Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin was assassinated at a peace rally in Tel Aviv by ultranationalist Israeli Yigal Amir, who opposes the Oslo Accords. Following increased rocket attacks on its civilian communities in the north by Shiite terrorist group Hezbollah in Lebanon, Israel launched “Operation Grapes of Wrath,” to deter the attacks.  The Clinton State Department proscribes Hamas as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO.) Other countries follow with their own designations of the group. Israel completes its full withdrawal from Southern Lebanon.  In January 2005, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon announced Israel’s unilateral withdrawal from Gaza, overseeing a full disengagement from the Palestinian enclave in September of that year. The following year, Hamas wins legislative elections, creating political tensions with Fatah in the West Bank. Elections have not taken place since then. Iranian-backed terror group Hezbollah kidnaps two Israeli soldiers and kills an additional eight, sparking the Second Lebanon War. Hezbollah fires thousands of rockets and missiles into northern Israel, which responds with airstrikes and ground forces. Following hundreds of deaths and massive damage on both sides, hostilities come to an end with the passage of U.N. Security Council Resolution 1701.  In 2007, Hamas forcefully took control of Gaza, overthrowing the Palestinian Authority in the strip. In response to Hamas rockets launched from Gaza, Israel imposed a partial blockade on the enclave by controlling goods and personnel coming in and out of the territory. Israel launched “Operation Cast Lead” aimed at stopping Hamas rocket and mortar fire from the territory into Israel. Israel killed Hamas terror leader Ahmed Jabari, triggering a week-long period of rocket attacks from Gaza and retaliatory Israeli airstrikes. The conflict resulted in at least 150 Palestinians and six Israelis losing their lives. The highly controversial chant that is seen as calling for Israel’s destruction, “From the river to the sea,” is adopted by Hamas, according to The Associated Press. Kahled Mashaal, the group’s former leader, stated in a speech celebrating the terrorist group’s 25th anniversary that, “Palestine is ours from the river to the sea and from the south to the north… There will be no concession on any inch of the land.” Other reports say the slogan originated in the 1960s and was used by the PLO. Hamas terrorists kill three Israeli teenagers abducted in the vicinity of a Jewish settlement in the West Bank. As Israel attempted to save the teens, Hamas fired hundreds of rockets into Israel, leading to an incursion by Israeli forces into Gaza. The conflict, which Israelis refer to as Operation Protective Edge, lasted 50 days and resulted in more than 2,200 Palestinian fatalities in Gaza and 73 Israeli deaths. ISRAELI FORCES ENTERED GAZA FOR LOCALIZED RAIDS, IDF TELLS FOX NEWS Violent protests unfold along the Gaza-Israel border, as Gazans tried to break through the security fence in what they term as the “Great March of Return,” endangering Israeli communities on the border. The IDF responds with sniper fire, killing some 190 protesters over the course of several months.  In November, Israel executes a raid into Gaza, resulting in the loss of at least seven Palestinian terrorists and a high-ranking Israeli army officer. In retaliation, hundreds of rockets are launched from Gaza into Israeli territory. The Trump administration fulfills an election promise and recognizes Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and opens up its new embassy in the holy city. President Trump said in a video statement, “For many years, we have failed to acknowledge the obvious, plain reality that the [Israeli] capital is Jerusalem. At my direction, the United States finally and officially recognized Jerusalem as the true capital of Israel.” The UAE and Bahrain normalize ties with Israel in agreements known as the Abraham Accords. The historic Trump administration-brokered accords followed months of negotiations. Sudan and Morocco also sign normalization agreements with Israel. Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas and Hamas reject the accords. Following weeks of heightened tension in Jerusalem, Israeli police responded to violence on the Temple Mount, the most sacred site to Jews, and the site of the al-Aqsa Mosque, one of Islam’s most revered sites. In response, Hamas launched thousands of rockets into Israel, triggering retaliation involving hundreds of airstrikes in the most intense conflict since at least 2014, with many deaths on both sides.  Israeli military units conduct anti-terror raids into the Palestinian city of Jenin, resulting in a deadly shootout that kills nine terrorists. The following day, a Palestinian terrorist opens fire at a Jerusalem synagogue during prayer, killing seven people, including children. In May, Israel launched surprise airstrikes in Gaza, leading to a five-day conflict that caused casualties on both sides. In June, Israeli forces conduct a significant raid into Jenin due to an increasing wave of terrorism coming from Iran-backed terror groups from within the Palestinian city. Following lethal terror attacks on Israelis, extremist Jewish settlers clashed with Palestinians in their villages. Israel subsequently executes its first drone strike in the West Bank since 2006, targeting terrorist headquarters. The following month, Israel initiated an air and ground offensive targeting terrorists within Jenin, marking the start of a prolonged “comprehensive counterterrorism effort.” On Oct. 7, Hamas terrorists surprised Israel in a brutal attack by invading its communities along the Gaza border. Some 1,200 Israelis were savagely killed, with 240 Israelis and foreigners kidnapped and taken hostage in Gaza.  On Oct. 8, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu officially declared war on Hamas. The offensive occurs a day after the 50th anniversary of the 1973 Yom Kippur War. The Israeli Air Force commences attacks against Hamas targets in Gaza, responding to the infiltration by Hamas terrorists into Israeli territory from the Gaza Strip. Israel has responded with a significant series of airstrikes targeting terrorists in Gaza and a ground incursion into Gaza. The Hamas-controlled ministry of health has claimed 12,000 Palestinians have been killed as a result of Israeli attacks. The United States and many other countries have expressed support for Israel’s ongoing war against Hamas terror. Sen. Marsha Blackburn on Thanksgiving blessings, including family, food, country: ‘Time to express gratitude’

Sen. Marsha Blackburn on Thanksgiving blessings, including family, food, country: 'Time to express gratitude'

For this Thanksgiving, and really any special occasion in the fall or winter, Sen. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., shared with Fox News Digital one of her favorite recipes. “There are some of us who do enjoy cooking,” she said in a phone interview in a lighter moment this week as she spoke about preparing for Thanksgiving. She said that all her life, she’s been able to share the joy of cooking with people in her family over the years, including her mother, her grandmother and her aunts. THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY TRIVIA TO DISCUSS AT THE DINNER TABLE THIS YEAR “Coming together as a family, celebrating holidays and a good meal — that was all just part of the way of life in our family.” Sen. Blackburn talked about a favorite cranberry chutney recipe — something relatively easy to make for those who may be juggling busy schedules this week but who still prefer a home-cooked dish to something bought at a store or right out of a can. “Chutneys are so easy, and especially so during the holidays. You do your simple syrup — water and sugar — and heat that up.” And then, she said, “you put those cranberries in there, and for children, it’s so much fun, because the cranberries pop and sizzle as they cook. And as you simmer it, you see that beautiful cranberry-red color really begin to gel and take place.” MEET THE AMERICAN WHO GAVE THE NATION OUR THANKSGIVING ORIGIN STORY: PILGRIM EDWARD WINSLOW Cranberries on their own are just fine, she suggested, or other ingredients can be added for even more flavor.  “You can add apples, or pineapples, or citrus — and just have something that’s good and fruity. And it’s the perfect accompaniment as a dressing for chicken dishes, in addition to turkey,” she said. Beyond the specific recipe, Sen. Blackburn reflected on the much broader blessings of Thanksgiving. “For our family when we gather, it’s important for us to talk about all the things we’re grateful for, and who we’re grateful for — and the difference and the impact that someone has made or had on our lives,” she said. And “expressing that gratitude,” she added, is also so vital.  THANKSGIVING QUIZ! HOW WELL DO YOU KNOW FACTS ABOUT ANNUAL TURKEY DAY? “It is so important that we do that and not take our freedoms and the comfort that we enjoy in this country for granted.” Sen. Blackburn mentioned being at the University of Tennessee recently for a fall football game. “And there was all of this excitement, and fun, and conversations, and laughter — and the band was playing, and a video was playing. And I thought, This is the sound of freedom.” And “this is what we enjoy that people around the globe are not able to enjoy,” she continued.  “They can’t experience that ability to gather and to have that enjoyment and to sing those songs.” CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR OUR LIFESTYLE NEWSLETTER She said it’s critical that “we have this time of relationship building and of expressing happiness. And we just can’t take that for granted.” She added, “There are men and women who fight for this country and who work every single day to make certain that they are protecting our nation.” And “we have law enforcement officers in every community that are protecting our streets and communities and keeping them free from crime.” She said that’s why “taking the time to express that gratitude, this week especially, I think is paramount.” For more about Sen. French pilot of plane that decapitated skydiver found guilty of manslaughter

French pilot of plane that decapitated skydiver found guilty of manslaughter

A French pilot has been found guilty of involuntary manslaughter after the plane he was flying struck and decapitated a wingsuit skydiver over southern France in 2018. The pilot, only identified as 64-year-old Alain C, was found guilty on Tuesday following a trial and given a suspended sentence by Montauban criminal court, according to reports. The pilot was also banned from flying for a year. The guilty decision stems from a July 2018 incident when wingsuit skydiver Nicholas Galy, 40, was killed shortly after jumping out of a single-engine Pilatus airplane being piloted by Alain C. A wingsuit skydiver wears a specialized webbed-sleeved jumpsuit with membranes between the arms, body and legs, which allows a diver to glide flight in the air. Galy was one of a pair of wingsuit skydivers who jumped from about 14,000 feet from the plane over the town of Bouloc-en-Quercy, located in the Occitanie region in southern France. FLORIDA SKYDIVER TRAGICALLY FALLS TO HIS DEATH, FOUND DECEASED ON RESIDENTIAL LAWN: POLICE However, disaster struck about 20 seconds after the pair jumped from the aircraft. Alain C descended the plane rapidly, catching up with the wingsuit skydivers as they glided across the sky, The Times of London previously reported. However, as the plane caught up with the skydivers, the left wing struck Galy, decapitating his head, according to the publication. DAREDEVIL SKYDIVER MAKES PERFECT LANDING ON BIZARRE POOL TOY: ‘COMING FOR YA’ Galy’s body landed in a field after his emergency parachute opened. During the trial, Alain argued he did not do anything wrong, adding that Galy “did not follow the expected course and should never have been on that course.” The pilot later said he thought Galy was farther south when he was in fact parallel to the plane. “I think my flight path made sense,” Alain said. “This has been the tragedy of my life, but I am not at fault.” It was also revealed during the trial that the pilot did not brief the skydivers about the jump and acknowledged he lost track of the wingsuit duo, assuming he was clear of them. He noted that wingsuit jumpers do not descend much and can be in conflict with the plane. Testimony also showed Alain was operating the plane on an invalid license after violating restrictions in place from a medical condition. The Midi-Pyrénées Skydiving School Association, which employed the pilot, was fined $21,800 (€20,000), half of which was suspended.  Since the incident, security measures have been strengthened and briefings have become obligatory, according to Isabelle Deschamps, the president of the school. Fox News’ Greg Wehner contributed to this report.

Virginia Democrats reveal 2024 agenda after Youngkin, GOP fall short in midterm election

Virginia Democrats reveal 2024 agenda after Youngkin, GOP fall short in midterm election

Abortion and gun control are the top priorities for Virginia Democrats heading into the new year after their election wins earlier this month. Bills and resolutions to ensure abortion access and ban so-called assault weapons were filed Monday as Democratic leaders set the agenda for the 2024 legislative session. Democrats propose increasing the state’s minimum wage and automatically restoring voting rights for convicted felons who have completed their sentences. Del. Don Scott, the new speaker of the House and first Black man to hold the office, said the upcoming legislative session will move Virginia forward. “I am especially glad to see the resolution to start the process of codifying the automatic restoration of rights,” Scott said in a news release. “With this, we are sending a message that there is no room for the spirit of Jim Crow that has plagued our Commonwealth for far too long.”  YOUGKIN FALLS SHORT IN HIS MISSION TO WIN TOTAL GOP CONTROL OF VIRGINIA STATE LEGISLATURE If the resolutions for abortion access and restoring felons’ rights pass the legislature, it would be the first step in a lengthy process to amend the state constitution. The amendments would then need to pass the legislature during a second year, and then be put to voters for approval in a state referendum, according to The Associated Press.  House of Delegates Majority Leader Charnlele Herring, who sponsored the abortion resolution, said Democrats were keeping a promise made throughout the 2023 campaign cycle.  DEMOCRAT SEEKS RECOUNT IN RAZOR-THIN VIRGINIA HOUSE RACE “It has become all too clear that without constitutional protection, access to reproductive healthcare is at risk for the Commonwealth,” Herring said. Bills filed in both the House and Senate would make buying, selling or transferring an assault firearm a Class 1 misdemeanor, subject to up to 12 months in jail. The bills use an existing state definition of “assault firearm,” which covers semiautomatic, center-fire rifles and pistols that use magazines holding more than 20 rounds of ammunition or are “designed by the manufacturer to accommodate a silencer or equipped with a folding stock.” The state Senate passed a similar bill earlier this year, but it died in the House, which was then controlled by Republicans. VIRGINIA SENATE NAMES CAUCUS LEADERS FOR UPCOMING LEGISLATIVE SESSION Democrats retained control of the state Senate and flipped the state House of Delegates from Republicans in the Nov. 7 election. The elections grabbed national attention, as Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin campaigned for several GOP candidates in what came to be viewed as a barometer ahead of next year’s 2024 elections and a test of Youngkin’s political strength.  Two years ago, Republicans in Virginia won elections for governor, lieutenant governor and attorney general — their first statewide victories in a dozen years – and they flipped the House. The victories in a state that had trended blue over the previous decade energized Republicans nationwide. This year, however, Democrats successfully campaigned on preserving abortion access and Youngkin, who advocated for a 15-week abortion restriction, lost the argument with voters. Now, he must contend with a Democratic-controlled legislature that will stymie his conservative agenda for the remainder of his term.  Fox News Digital’s Paul Steinhauser and The Associated Press contributed to this report. Travis Kelce takes subtle jab at Aaron Rodgers who dubbed Chiefs star ‘Mr. Pfizer’

Travis Kelce takes subtle jab at Aaron Rodgers who dubbed Chiefs star 'Mr. Pfizer'

New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers has dubbed Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce “Mr. Pfizer,” as the latter is one of the new spokespeople for the COVID-19 vaccine.  While Kelce had previously played it off, saying “I look like someone named Mr. Pfizer,” he decided to take a slight jab at Rodgers during a recent interview with the Wall Street Journal.  Rodgers, who has voiced his opinion on not wanting to take the coronavirus vaccine, used one of his “The Pat McAfee Show” appearances on Tuesdays to call Kelce “Mr. Pfizer.” Kelce pointed out that those guest spots for Rodgers, who tore his Achilles just four plays into his Week 1 debut with the Jets, are his “game days” now.  CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM “Aaron’s always been cool to me,” Kelce said to the Wall Street Journal in an in-depth profile. “I knew he was trying to have some fun.  “He’s in a situation where Tuesdays are his game days… So I get it, man, I’ve been injured too… Who knows what the guy is going through?”  FROM OUTKICK: BRONCOS SAFETY’S SUSPENSION UPHELD, DRAWS MIXED REACTIONS ON SOCIAL MEDIA Kelce and Rodgers have been seen together during the season, though, with Rodgers turning heads on Oct. 1 when he was throwing balls at MetLife Stadium prior to the Jets taking on the Chiefs in primetime.  Kelce divulged their conversation, which was seen on the MetLife Stadium turf that Sunday night.  “I didn’t shoot him a text or anything like that (when he got hurt) so just wanted to go up to him and tell him how excited I was and how bummed out we were he got banged up and needed to get surgery,” Kelce said of his talk with Rodgers on his “New Heights” podcast alongside his Philadelphia Eagles center older brother, Jason Kelce.  Kelce’s excitement was similar to what every Jets fan was going through in this new Rodgers era, as hype was consistently being built leading up to Week 1 against the Buffalo Bills on “Monday Night Football.” However, the hype train came to a crashing halt when Rodgers tore his Achilles and came out of the game, with a sold-out MetLife Stadium not knowing what the future held.  “You hate to see the great ones go down with injury,” Kelce added on his podcast. “I went up to him to tell him we were all hurting for him and hopefully he gets healthy quickly.” Thanks to a “speed bridge” procedure to repair the Achilles, Rodgers has been healing quickly. He reportedly told the Jets that he wishes to practice with them soon, and a return date near Week 16 (Dec. 24) could be in play as long as the Jets are in playoff contention.

Ex-Lions star Herman Moore on team’s impressive season, Dan Campbell’s ‘blueprint,’ Amon-Ra St Brown’s rise

Ex-Lions star Herman Moore on team's impressive season, Dan Campbell's 'blueprint,' Amon-Ra St Brown's rise

The Detroit Lions have been one of the best teams in the NFL through the first 11 weeks of the season. If the year ended after Monday night’s game, the Lions would have won their division for the first time since the 1993 season and wrapped up a playoff spot with the hopes of winning their first playoff game since the 1991 season. Herman Moore was a rookie when the Lions last won a playoff game. He developed into one of the best receivers Detroit has had before Calvin Johnson came along. He had 670 receptions for 9,174 yards and 62 touchdowns from 1991 to 2001. He finished his career in 2002 with the New York Giants. CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM Moore is enjoying what he’s seen so far from the 8-2 Lions and is surprised with one aspect of their year so far. “I’ve been impressed with the fact that they’ve stayed very steady and stuck with their process,” he told Fox News Digital in a recent interview. “[Head coach] Dan Campbell came in with a plan, and when you face adversity early in a new coaching tenure, especially being a first-time head coach, typically you shift and you do a lot of things to break away from what you initially thought.” “But Dan Campbell has stayed pretty true to it, and I think the players have leveled in on the consistency of the culture that he is expecting. And because of that, I’m not only surprised at the success as much as just the fact that they’re doing it with such confidence, and they’re not making the mistakes that you would think a team that was in a rebuild phase would make.” FROM OUTKICK: JOB SECURITY FOR FRANK REICH, RON RIVERA, BRANDON STALEY AND, SHOCKINGLY, EVEN MIKE VRABEL IN PERIL Campbell has been a fan favorite with his intense mentality to coaching the game he loves and dropping quips that have stuck with fans since he arrived in Detroit. But Moore said it goes beyond that, pointing to players being able to buy into his philosophies and dynamics as a coach because he just didn’t hold a clipboard his entire career. He played the game, too. “What I saw that was different with coach Campbell from day one, and I think that contributes to a lot of his success, is that he’s a coach that has played the game,” Moore said. “He understands it. I think it gets understated and not given as much credibility as it should be.” Campbell was a tight end in the NFL from 1999 to 2008, even playing for the Lions toward the end of his playing career before he got into coaching. Moore also pointed to Campbell’s coaching staff, which includes former players in key positions, to help with player development. ANDREW WHITWORTH QUESTIONS JETS NOT TARGETING FREE-AGENT QUARTERBACKS EARLIER: ‘THAT GROWS THIS FRUSTRATION’ “He’s created a blueprint to show what can happen if you bring in the right people who understand how to work with the personnel; that being the players,” Moore said. “Those players understand how important culture is. They understand how important accountability is. I think the channel of communication is a lot smoother than typically what it is when it’s just a coach who doesn’t understand but one side of the game.” Jared Goff, Amon-Ra St. Brown and David Montgomery have all made huge contributions to the team’s success this season. Moore praised Brown for how he’s been able to emerge as a star wide receiver after the team selected him in the fourth round of the 2021 draft. He has 73 catches for 898 yards and five touchdowns this season. “You have to tip your hat to him because here’s a young man that came in, and even though he was drafted later, he was the one that took the mantle and became the leader at the wide receiver position,” Moore said. “He’s now consistently proving that not only was he deserving of a first-round status, but he’s proven to be a perennial star, in my opinion, in the NFL at the receiver position.” “He’s carrying a tradition of really having that superstar guy that we’ve had in this franchise through the years. It’s great to see that he’s doing that, and I think because he’s doing it so consistently and he’s doing it so almost effortlessly, he can get overlooked.” Moore believes the team’s success could earn them a bye week, though they’ll have to overcome the defending conference champion Philadelphia Eagles to get there. “If you look at the remaining games on their schedule, I think they could still afford to have a loss or two and still be in a very, very good position to either get a bye or at least have a home playoff game,” he told Fox News Digital. “I’m super excited as an alum, and it’s just been a long time coming for this franchise and for this fan base.” Follow Fox News Digital’s sports coverage on X and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.

Inspirational stars Michael J Fox, Jeff Bridges, others remain hopeful amid major health crises

Inspirational stars Michael J Fox, Jeff Bridges, others remain hopeful amid major health crises

Hollywood stars are looking on the brighter side as they face challenging health conditions. Famous celebrities, including Michael J. Fox, Sam Neill, Jeff Bridges and Shannen Doherty, have momentarily stepped out of the spotlight to focus on their health, but they continue to share their tumultuous journeys and what helps them get through the unexpected events in their lives. Here’s how these stars have offered a glimmer of hope as they battle their own personal, yet inspirational, health crises in the public eye. MICHAEL J. FOX GETS SCARED AMID PARKINSON’S DISEASE BATTLE, BUT ‘THE ABSENCE OF FEAR IS FAITH’ Michael J. Fox has given fans a glimpse inside his battle with Parkinson’s disease for more than three decades. The “Back to the Future” star, who was diagnosed with the progressive brain disorder in 1991, admitted that he has moments of depression and uncertainty. However, Fox said he focuses on staying optimistic even during his most challenging times. “The positivity is really sincere. I really feel it, and it’s genuine,” Fox, 62, previously told “CBS Mornings.” “But it’s hard-fought, and it’s hard-won, I should say.” “We can find ways to just give ourselves a break, give ourselves credit for getting through life on life’s terms,” he continued. “And, in order to do that, you have to stop and say, ‘It’s not that bad. It’s not that bad.'” “They say the absence of fear is faith.” In 1998, Fox publicly revealed his diagnosis for the first time. After retiring from acting, Fox dedicated himself to the Michael J. Fox Foundation, a nonprofit he co-founded in 2000 to help find a cure. The foundation has led to more than a dozen clinical trials and therapeutic programs and is a resource for those who have been previously diagnosed or are newly diagnosed. Fox turned his negative health crisis into a positive as the Canadian native was determined to spread awareness about Parkinson’s. “They didn’t have money. They didn’t have a voice,” Fox told the outlet. “And I thought, ‘Well, I could step in for these people and raise some hell.’” Over the years, the Michael J. Fox Foundation has raised more than $2 billion for research and development of better treatments for people living with Parkinson’s. In April, an international team of researchers conducted a clinical study led by Fox’s foundation that resulted in a breakthrough in the understanding and treatment of Parkinson’s. JEFF BRIDGES TALKS ‘THE BIG LEBOWSKI’ AND HIS TERRIFYING NEAR-DEATH EXPERIENCE Oscar-winning actor Jeff Bridges has candidly spoken out about his health battle. Bridges, 73, previously revealed to AARP magazine that the tumor from his cancer has shrunk “to the size of a marble.” He was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2020 while on a COVID-19 pandemic-mandated break from filming the FX series “The Old Man.” Bridges first noticed an issue while he was working out. “I was doing some exercises while on the ground and felt what seemed like a bone in my stomach. I thought to myself, hmm. But it didn’t hurt or anything. I asked [my wife] Sue what she thought. She said, ‘I don’t know, but you’ve got to get it checked out.'” he said. The “Crazy Heart” star said that because he wasn’t in pain, he was reluctant to see a doctor. While facing another health battle with COVID-19 in 2021, the now-73-year-old actor credited his wife for standing by his side through his near-fatal experience. Bridges said he came very close to dying due to a weakened immune system from the chemotherapy. “For me,” Bridges told the outlet, “cancer was nothing compared to the COVID.” The “Big Lebowski” star thanked his wife, who was also temporarily hospitalized with COVID, for helping him through his five-week hospitalization and long recovery. “My wife, Sue, was my absolute champion,” he said. “She really fought to keep me off a ventilator. I didn’t want to be on it, and the doctors didn’t necessarily want that. But Sue was adamant.” SAM NEILL ASSURES FANS HE’S ‘ALIVE AND WELL’ AND IN REMISSION AFTER CANCER NEWS “Jurassic Park” star Sam Neill had an emotional moment with his fans over his battle with aggressive cancer. In October, Neill, 76, tearfully apologized for worrying friends and fans and set the record straight on recent remarks he made about his cancer treatment. Neill previously told Australia Today that he had been in remission for 12 months due to positive effects of a rare anti-cancer drug, but doctors had informed him that it would eventually stop working. “I made a passing remark that the treatment I’m on, which has me in remission, will inevitably fail one day. Well, that’s what happens. It’s nothing to worry about,” Neill said in a social media video. APP USERS CLICK HERE  “I’ll bore you all to death with lots more work and, at such time as it does fail, we’re trying something else,” Neill added. “There’s all sorts of things that are happening with cancer these days. It’s a whole new ball game.” “So, please stop worrying,” he said while tearing up. “I’m getting a lot of messages on social media and from friends. I’m sorry to worry everybody. It’s all good, it’s all fine. It’s a beautiful day. I’m off to work and look how gorgeous those geraniums are in the background.” LIKE WHAT YOU’RE READING? Back then, he called the illness “ferocious,” and in a recent interview he admitted that while he’s not sure exactly how much time he has left, he’s not scared of dying. While he spoke to the television program “Australian Story,” Neill detailed his diagnosis of angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, saying he was in “a fight for my life.” He underwent a few months of “brutal” chemotherapy, something he said stripped him of “any kind of dignity.” His doctor, Orly Lavee, appeared on the show to explain that before he was even done with the first round of chemo, the cancer proved to be resistant to the treatment and became even more aggressive. She said many patients choose to stop treatments if this happens, but Neill was “quite keen” on keeping up the fight. SHANNEN DOHERTY ‘DOING OK’ AFTER REVEALING CANCER HAS SPREAD TO BRAIN; CELEBRITY FRIENDS SHOW SUPPORT “Beverly Hills, 90210” star Shannen Doherty has remained positive in her fight with cancer.  Doherty, 52, has shown no signs of slowing down as she spoke out about her cancer battle during public events.  During a panel at ‘90s Con in September, the “Charmed” actress became emotional, telling the crowd, “Thank you so much,” according to People magazine. “You guys know how much I love crying constantly. And I do, it seems. So, thank you.” The actress went on to give an update on her health as she battles stage 4 breast cancer: “I have a fight for my life that I deal with every day. I think I am really great.” She revealed that her breast cancer was back and had spread to her brain with a post on social media in June. Doherty’s doctors found metastases, which she called mets, on her brain on Jan. 5, and the actress began radiation on Jan. 12. CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR THE ENTERTAINMENT NEWSLETTER Doherty has shown resilience throughout her health battle, especially with the help of fans, celebrity friends and co-stars, including Sarah Michelle Gellar. Her longtime friend, Gellar, outlined exactly why Doherty embodies “a warrior.” “She’s incredible. … When they say a warrior, she is a warrior,” Gellar previously told “Access Hollywood.” “And she lives every day, and she’s fighting.” Fox News Digital’s Ashley Hume contributed to this report.

Ohio Rep. Bill Johnson leaving Congress to accept role as president of Youngstown State

Ohio Rep. Bill Johnson leaving Congress to accept role as president of Youngstown State

U.S. Rep. Bill Johnson, R-Ohio, announced Tuesday that he is retiring from Congress to accept an offer to become president of Youngstown State University. Johnson, who was first elected to the U.S. House in 2010, will continue in his role as a lawmaker for several more months before starting as president of Youngstown State University in March. “After much thought and prayerful deliberation, I have accepted the offer to lead Youngstown State University and will not be seeking an 8th term in Congress,” Johnson wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter. “As I’ve stated previously, I wasn’t looking for another job, because I love the one I have serving the people of Eastern Ohio in the U.S. House. This was an extremely difficult decision.” “This is not a goodbye, however. I will continue serving in the House for several more months, and you will see no let up,” the outgoing congressman continued. “My offices are open and my staff remains ready to serve you.” TEXAS CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY INCREASES TUITION, MEANING IT COSTS LESS TO ATTEND HARVARD The Youngstown State University Board of Trustees voted 8-1 on Tuesday to offer Johnson his new job as president of the institution. Johnson, 69, will succeed former Ohio State University football head coach Jim Tressel, who left as Youngstown president in February. Helen K. Lafferty is currently serving as the university’s interim president. “There is still much left on my agenda to do before I depart Congress, including doing all I can to help pass tax exemption legislation to benefit the people of East Palestine as well as a broader rail safety bill, streamline America’s LNG export process, and advance a responsible budget and spending package for the remainder of this fiscal year. It’s business as usual,” Johnson wrote in his statement on X. OHIO DEMOCRAT UNDER INVESTIGATION AFTER ALLEGATIONS OF ‘ERRATIC AND ABUSIVE’ BEHAVIOR The Ohio lawmaker represents the state’s sixth congressional district, which covers the East Palestine area where a Norfolk Southern train derailed in February, resulting in black smoke blanketing the village and hazardous chemicals spilling into the community’s soil and water. The filing deadline for congressional candidates to submit signed petitions to run in party primaries for the two-year term that starts January 2025 is Dec. 20, and the primary election will be held in Ohio on March 19.  Republican Gov. Mike DeWine will decide if and when to schedule a special election to select someone to replace Johnson in Congress for the rest of 2024.

Tech CEO Sam Altman’s ouster highlights need for better regulation: experts

Tech CEO Sam Altman's ouster highlights need for better regulation: experts

The surprising ouster of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has renewed concern over the state of artificial intelligence regulation as the industry continues to grow at a rapid pace. “Now is the perfect time to create common sense guard rails,” Christopher Alexander, the chief analytics officer of Pioneer Development Group, told Fox News Digital. Alexander’s comments come after OpenAI’s board made the move last week to push out Altman, arguing that the company’s founder had not communicated well with the board and that he had lost the confidence of those on it. “Mr. Altman’s departure follows a deliberative review process by the board, which concluded that he was not consistently candid in his communications with the board, hindering its ability to exercise its responsibilities,” the company said in a release. SAM ALTMAN REPORTEDLY PLANNING NEW AI VENTURE AFTER OPENAI OUSTER The move comes as the growing AI industry begins to attract more attention from governments around the world, with President Biden recently signing an executive order meant to be the first step in regulating the industry. However, just how far reaching that order can go is questionable, while Congress has taken few steps to codify any AI regulation into law. That lack of regulation has caused concern to grow as one of the country’s leading AI companies, which is behind the popular ChatGPT platform, transitions to new leadership. Writing for the New York Post earlier this week, Niagara University philosophy professor Steve Petersen argued the move showed that AI companies “can no longer be trusted to police themselves; it’s past time to call in the long arm of the law.” “It’s defined as intelligence at the human level or better on all cognitive tasks — and once we get it, it’s likely to blow way beyond our level of intelligence in a hurry,” Petersen argued. “If we get it wrong, many sober thinkers agree it could be an existential catastrophe for humanity.” Alexander agreed that the risk AI could potentially poses makes regulation necessary, though he cautioned that the current technology is not at the level many fear, but one day could be. OPENAI CO-FOUNDER GREG BROCKMAN ‘SHOCKED AND SADDENED’ BY CEO SAM ALTMAN’S DEPARTURE Alexander pointed to the initial boom in social media as one example of missed opportunity, arguing that policymakers should not make the same mistakes when it comes to AI. However, some have questioned whether Altman’s surprise departure highlights the need for more regulation, with Center for Advanced Preparedness and Threat Response Simulation founder Phil Siegel pointing out that OpenAI has already passed regulatory hurdles. “The lack of a process for investigation and policy application is alarming for a company that has such an impact on our tech ecosystem right now,” Siegel told Fox News Digital. “I’m hoping the investors will put their foot down and demand a larger, more professionalized and accountable Board, maybe with only one founder, one or two activists, and several experienced Directors. Not sure you can regulate that—they would have passed most regulatory hurdles you can imagine.” CLICK HERE FOR MORE US NEWS Meanwhile, other experts fear that overregulation could dampen U.S. innovation of AI technology. “Leadership struggles like what we just saw at OpenAI aren’t new. The business world experiences them on a regular basis,” Samuel Mangold-Lenett, a staff editor at The Federalist, told Fox News Digital.  “Most of our knowledge about AGI remains theoretical, and it’s likely that regulations in this space will inhibit development and slow progress while our adversaries — namely China — continue to plow ahead. We need to be careful and ensure that this technology doesn’t pose a threat to humanity and that the people working on it can be trusted to work on it, but much like the Manhattan Project, it’s impossible to find the perfect balance of conditions and personalities.”  CLICK TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP However, Jon Schweppe, the policy director of American Principles Project, argued that the ordeal is an example of why regulation is needed. “”Imagine if we decided to leave our nuclear arsenal in the hands of a few highly ideological tech bros,” Schweppe told Fox News Digital. “That’s essentially what’s happening with AI right now. AI is a technological weapon of mass destruction — it poses an existential threat to humanity as we know it. Obviously some level of oversight is needed before it’s too late.”

JFK assassination: 60 years later we know the truth about the real killer

JFK assassination: 60 years later we know the truth about the real killer

On Nov. 22, 1963, we lost not only a popular young president, but we also lost our national innocence. We lost our trust in government. Once lost, it has not returned and never will. The rifle shots fired at the president’s motorcade changed my own life as I watched TV coverage of my bloodied “friend” Lee Harvey Oswald dragged into the Dallas Police Station. When the Secret Service knocked on my door the morning after the assassination, they came for me as someone identified as a “known associate” of the presumed JFK assassin.  My involvement with Lee and Marina Oswald began in June 1962. I saw them last as they ran to catch the Fort Worth to Dallas bus on Nov. 22, 1962. A year later, my father translated for Marina from Nov. 24 to 28 as the Secret Service probed her knowledge of a conspiracy. As America came to a standstill, mourning JFK, the Warren Commission began its inquiry into the circumstances of his death. My own testimony before the commission was on March 31, 1964. The commission was wasting no time. If the assassination had been a conspiracy, we needed to know and fast.  JFK ASSASSINATION WITNESS OFFERS NEW DETAILS THAT UNDERMINE ‘MAGIC BULLET THEORY’: ‘BEGINNING TO DOUBT MYSELF’ Comprised of our most distinguished public servants, the Warren Commission (headed by Chief Justice Earl Warren) concluded after hundreds of thousands of pages of testimony and physical evidence that a disturbed young man (Oswald) killed the president, and he acted alone. When issued on Sept. 24, 1964, the public overwhelmingly accepted its finding, but more than a half-century later, 60% changed their minds in favor of a conspiracy. Nor has controversy over the commission’s “sole gunman” verdict waned with the passage of time.  At the 60th anniversary, expect a flurry of new evidence, new theories and even new witnesses to supplement the almost 1,500 books already written on the subject. Some 90% of these accounts promote conspiracy theories, most with Oswald as a “patsy” directed by deeper and sinister forces. Also, do not expect any bombshells from National Archives releases of the remaining 14,000 JFK-related documents. The June and August (2023) releases largely consist of previously redacted material that has little to do with the assassination, but do address CIA operations worldwide. The Warren report thus left behind an enduring legacy of mistrust in government. At the half-century mark, a remarkable fifth of conspiracy believers blamed “the government” (including the CIA) for JFK’s death. A large number have subsequently come to believe that government has been either involved in assorted other conspiracies – that 9/11 was a government setup, or that we lied about Iraq WMD to justify an invasion.  NATIONAL ARCHIVES COMPLETES REVIEW OF JFK ASSASSINATION DOCUMENTS, 99% PUBLICLY AVAILABLE: WHITE HOUSE No matter how far-fetched (space alien bodies, U.N. black helicopters, the CIA importing AIDS into the ghetto), each new theory attracts its followers. Chasing conspiracies is a profitable business, more so than the “Oswald did it alone” narrative.  The Warren report played a losing game from the start against the deeply rooted belief that someone or something is in charge. Some claim that a New World Order or a “deep state” control about everything. History-changing events, like the assassination of a president, cannot be random or coincidence. According to this logic, the complex set of circumstances that brought Oswald to the sixth floor of the Texas Schoolbook Depository Building on Nov. 22, 1963, had to be planned and executed by powerful clandestine forces. “Little men” like Oswald do not make history by themselves, but they could sit unnoticed in the back row. The conspiracy gate opened almost instantaneously after the assassination. There were more than enough opportunists and potential suspects to go around, including the USSR, Cuba, the Mafia, Dallas right-wingers, the CIA and oil interests. One theory, which may have originated in the Kremlin, has my father, Pete, shifting the blame to Oswald by deliberately mistranslating Marina. I have been credited with some 50 clandestine meetings with the future assassin, I guess, to plot some nefarious deed of which I remain ignorant.  As a regular visitor to the Oswald’s Mercedes Street duplex, I accumulated first-hand observations of this recently married couple, their baby June sleeping in an open suitcase, wife Marina opening the door for me with a black eye, husband Lee resisting his wife learning English or her getting to know other Russians, his anger when challenged on his Marxist beliefs in our house, and his verbally abusing Marina in a frightening temper fit.  AUTHOR WHO WORKED AT JFK LIBRARY STRUGGLES WITH MIXED FEELINGS FOR FORMER PRESIDENT: ‘IT WAS NOT CAMELOT’ I, as an intermediary to the Dallas Russian community, must have earned Lee’s resentment as Russian Samaritans penetrated the isolation Lee imposed on Marina. Later I was unwittingly to write a letter to Marina that exposed the very weaknesses that Lee wanted covered. Although the couple saved just about every letter they received, my offending letter has disappeared.  The JFK mystery will never be solved. Any immediate conspirators are dead or have kept silent into their 90s. If there were indeed a conspiracy, it is remarkable that the silence of conspirators (and their children and grandchildren) remains unbroken over six decades.  Yes, there is an abundance of discrepancies and contradictions to provide fodder for the conspiracists; among them, an alleged shot from the grassy knoll, Oswald’s presumed deficient Marine training in sharpshooting, his meeting with a KGB agent in Mexico City, and a flawed presidential autopsy.  Some sensational and near-comedic explanations have become grist for the conspiracy mill, such as Oswald was not Oswald but had been replaced by a KGB doppelganger. (It cost that conspiracist a considerable amount to pay for the exhumation only to prove himself wrong.)  Despite the intensity of feelings on both sides, we seem to have one consensus: Oswald was the shooter from the sixth-floor window, thus leaving two options. Either Oswald was a patsy in a very complex plot devised by mysterious puppet masters, or the “little man” Oswald alone planned and executed the murder of the world’s most closely guarded man. RFK JR. DOUBLES DOWN ON ALLEGATION CIA INVOLVED IN JFK’S ASSASSINATION: ‘60-YEAR COVER-UP’ When reduced to this binary choice, the conspiracy crowd appear to have the upper hand: Is not a delusional and dyslexic high school dropout, working for the minimum wage, ill qualified to murder a president single-handedly?  My own answer is that we have grossly underestimated Oswald. He was, in fact, a ticking time bomb perfectly capable of planning and executing the JFK murder. As Norman Mailer wrote in his “Oswald’s Tale: An American Mystery,” it is not forensics, autopsies, trajectories or missing bullets but Lee Harvey Oswald himself who holds the key to the assassination. We must look to him to decide whether he had the means, motive, intellect and general wherewithal to carry out the assassination alone.  My answer to all is yes.  My own contribution to the mix rests upon my knowing Lee and Marina as well as any of the few “friends” they accumulated over their one and half years in the Fort Worth-Dallas area. I first met them upon their return to Fort Worth in June 1962. I was frequently in their home receiving Russian tutoring from Marina. I organized the dinner that introduced the couple to the “Dallas Russians.”  US UNSEALS THOUSANDS OF CLASSIFIED JFK ASSASSINATION DOCUMENTS My last meeting with them was at our house on Thanksgiving Day 1962. One year later, I sat in a car headed to an interrogation as a “known associate” of Lee Harvey Oswald. Mine was not the Gregory family’s only personal connection to the tragedy. My father, Pete, translated for Marina throughout the first five days after the assassination as the Secret Service tried to rule out a conspiracy. It was he who told Marina that Lee was dead. These qualifications give me the standing to opine on whether Oswald had the means, intellect and motive to shoot JFK, and he did so alone.  Oswald was indeed a perfect “low tech assassin.” His assassination equipment consisted of a $19.95 mail order rifle and a pistol. His transportation to and from the assassination site – a bummed ride and a city bus. He began work at the future assassination site a month and a half before, by chance, at a building that no one then knew would fall on the motorcade route.  Nor was Oswald a stranger to assassinations. After weeks of plotting, he narrowly missed the right-wing leader, Gen. Edwin Walker, with a shot from the assassination weapon, as Walker worked in his study. For the Walker operation, no one doubts that Oswald acted alone. The attempt on Walker confirms Oswald’s “soul of a killer,” to borrow from Mailer. Our gross underestimation of Oswald explains our reluctance to accept the “little man” explanation of the JFK assassination. The Oswald I knew was persistent, scheming and manipulative. He was a convincing liar, a careful planner who forced the hand of the USSR Politburo with a staged suicide. He persuaded the U.S. Embassy in Moscow to return his passport, he wheedled financial help from his despised mother when convenient for him.  ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY, NOVEMBER 20, 1925, ROBERT F. KENNEDY IS BORN IN MASSACHUSETTS He returned to Texas with wife Marina on money borrowed from the U.S. embassy. He deliberately polished his pro-Castro credentials with his Free Cuba lobbying in New Orleans, paid for remarkably from his own pocket. Despite being unable to spell and punctuate, he carried on a correspondence with leaders of the American Communist Party and with Cuban sympathizers. As to means and motive, Oswald had been taught since childhood by a deranged mother that he was special. He was destined for greatness, were it not for the powerful forces aligned against him. Although an avowed communist, he resisted being identified as “working class.” He had a grudge, and he was going to show the world that he belonged in history books. Wife Marina’s publicly belittling her husband’s weird ideas and his bedroom performance made matters worse.  As to means, Oswald’s work life consisted of $1.25 jobs, living at the YMCA as Marina camped out with Russian female friends. He had money for a bus ticket to Mexico City and for the assassination rifle. He had an ideological reason for killing Walker, but JFK simply fell in his lap via the string of events that conspiracists cannot believe were random and coincidental. On Nov. 23, 1963, early morning, as I was being driven to the Oklahoma City Secret Service office, I did not hesitate to accept the fact that Oswald had killed the president. I stated that Lee would be the last person to either join or lead a conspiracy. Lee was definitely not a joiner. Nor was he an organizer. His New Orleans pro-Cuba efforts brought in one recruit: namely, A.J. Hidell, his alias. (Oswald was not lacking in imagination and chutzpah.)  JOHN F KENNEDY’S LIFE AND LEGACY REMEMBERED ON 35TH PRESIDENT’S 100TH BIRTHDAY Oswald’s trip to Mexico City from Sept. 26 to Oct. 2, captures the immense divide between the conspiracists and the lone gunman crowd. According to the former, Oswald traveled (via bus) to get his assassination marching orders from the Soviet or Cuban embassies in Mexico City. A CIA wiretap caught him calling a Soviet embassy official, later identified as KGB. He met a Mexican national working in the Cuban embassy, who introduced him to several friends at a party. According to various conspiracy theories, Oswald left Mexico City with his assassination orders from one or more of these sources. Mexico City is crucial for most conspiracy theories. It was there, supposedly, that his Cuban and USSR puppet masters unleashed their assassin. But the Oswald I knew went to Mexico City not for marching orders but to pave the way for a new life in Cuba. Surely Fidel would welcome his faithful servant.  The nomadic Oswald had already concluded that Texas was not for him. Time to move on, but for that he needed both a USSR and a Cuban (transit) visa. To avoid a half-year wait, he went to the nearest city that hosted both embassies – Mexico City. He went to bluff his way through (his USSR visa was in the mail, he would claim.) There he was rebuffed by both embassies and frustrated to the point of a verbal battle with the Cuban embassy.  Upon his return to Dallas, Oswald took the job at the Texas Book Depository on Oct. 15 (FBI officials got orders only about a month later to prepare for a presidential visit). On Nov. 12, Oswald visited the Dallas FBI threatening to blow up the building if they did not stop harassing Marina. Such a “loose cannon” move certainly was odd for someone with secret orders to kill the president. The Secret Service could not forgive the FBI for not neutralizing someone as suspicious as Oswald.  CLICK HERE FOR MORE FOX NEWS OPINION Lee Harvey Oswald returned to Dallas from Mexico frustrated and depressed. His blueprint for a new life had been frustrated. No pampered life in Cuba, but another $1.25 job, a marriage falling apart, and an FBI breathing down his neck.  In typical form, the persistent Oswald bounced back. He ordered Marina to update her USSR visa application. They would still go to live in Cuba. He even briefly contemplated hijacking a plane to Havana.  And then he learns that the president was coming to town. He already had his assassination kit ready. At work, he learns that the motorcade will pass by his building. His path to immortality is set.  If he had reservations, it would be that Marina so admired JFK and Jackie. His killing the president would devastate her, but immortality’s siren song drowned out any qualms.

On this day in history, November 22, 1963, John F. Kennedy, 35th president, is assassinated

On this day in history, Nov. 22, 1963, President John F. Kennedy — the 35th president of the United States — was assassinated while riding in an open-car motorcade in downtown Dallas, Texas. The shocking event of 60 years ago happened near the end of JFK’s third year as president. Riding in the same car as Kennedy and first lady Jacqueline Kennedy was Texas Gov. John B. Connally, as well as Connally’s wife, Nellie Connally. ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY, NOVEMBER 21, 1864, ABRAHAM LINCOLN ‘PENS’ LETTER TO MRS. BIXBY That same day, the suspect in the shooting, Lee Harvey Oswald, was arrested. Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson was sworn in as president that day as well as the stunned nation absorbed the blow of so suddenly and violently losing its elected president. Crowds of excited people lined the streets of Dallas and waved to the Kennedys that day, as the JFK Library’s website notes of the president’s campaign event — one of several — that day in Texas. “The car turned off Main Street at Dealey Plaza around 12:30 p.m. As it was passing the Texas School Book Depository, gunfire suddenly reverberated in the plaza,” the website also details. “Bullets struck the president’s neck and head and he slumped over toward Mrs. Kennedy. The governor was shot in his back.” Right after the shooting, “the car sped off to Parkland Memorial Hospital just a few minutes away,” the JFK Library’s website also notes.  “But little could be done for the president. A Catholic priest was summoned to administer the last rites, and at 1:00 p.m. John F. Kennedy was pronounced dead.” Gov. Connally had been seriously wounded but later recovered. “The president’s body was brought to Love Field and placed on Air Force One,” the website also notes. “Before the plane took off, a grim-faced Lyndon B. Johnson stood in the tight, crowded compartment and took the oath of office, administered by U.S. District Court Judge Sarah Hughes.” The time was 2:38 p.m. Bob Huffaker, a former reporter at KRLD Radio in Dallas, was an eyewitness to the shooting, according to Reuters. “It looked as though the entire city had turned up,” said Huffaker about that day in November. “It was really great. Dallas had shown that it really loved that president.” Another eyewitness, Hugh Aynesworth, a former reporter for the Dallas Morning News, said, “Then I heard what I thought was a motorcycle backfiring, only it wasn’t — it was the first shot, and then in a few seconds, another shot and a third,” also according to Reuters. Said the famed Walter Cronkite of CBS News that day during an on-camera news bulletin that broke into the then-in-progress “As The World Turns” soap opera on the network: “From Dallas, Texas, the flash apparently official, President Kennedy died at 1:00 p.m. Central Standard Time, 2 o’clock Eastern Standard Time, some 38 minutes ago.” Less than an hour before that, however, police arrested Lee Harvey Oswald, “a recently hired employee at the Texas School Book Depository,” the JFK Library’s website says. “He was being held for the assassination of President Kennedy and the fatal shooting, shortly afterward, of Patrolman J. D. Tippit on a Dallas street.” Then, on Sunday morning, Nov. 24, “Oswald was scheduled to be transferred from police headquarters to the county jail. Viewers across America watching the live television coverage suddenly saw a man aim a pistol and fire at point-blank range.” Adds the website of the caught-on-camera crime, “The assailant was identified as Jack Ruby, a local nightclub owner. Oswald died two hours later at Parkland Hospital.” MARK FUHRMAN UNVEILS ANALYSIS ON KENNEDY’S ASSASSINATION ON FOX NATION’S ‘THE FUHRMAN DIARIES’ That same day, President Kennedy’s “flag-draped casket was moved from the White House to the Capitol on a caisson drawn by six [gray] horses, accompanied by one riderless black horse,” the library also notes. “Crowds lined Pennsylvania Avenue and many wept openly as the caisson passed.” “During the 21 hours that the president’s body lay in state in the Capitol Rotunda, about 250,000 people filed by to pay their respects.” On Monday, Nov. 25, 1963, Kennedy was laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery. “The funeral was attended by heads of state and representatives from more than 100 countries, with untold millions more watching on television. Afterward, at the grave site, Mrs. Kennedy and her husband’s brothers, Robert and Edward, lit an eternal flame.” CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR OUR LIFESTYLE NEWSLETTER Any American alive at the time and watching can likely still recall one of the “most indelible images of the day”: the salute by a young child to his father (John F. Kennedy Jr. was only three years old at the time), plus “daughter Caroline kneeling next to her mother at the president’s bier, and the extraordinary grace and dignity shown by Jacqueline Kennedy,” writes the JFK library’s website. Many unanswered questions remain to this day about Kennedy’s assassination. In the decades since, conspiracy theories and speculation of all kinds have surfaced and continue to be debated and discussed. For more Lifestyle articles, visit www.foxnews.com/lifestyle.

GUTFELD: It’s about time somebody exposes Media Matters

GUTFELD: It's about time somebody exposes Media Matters

Yes. Happy Taco Tuesday. The port-a-potty is right over there. All right. There’s been a lot of talk among Dems about misinformation and disinformation. Basically, any sort of information that doesn’t help a Democrat get elected, also known as the truth in the eyes of the Dems. The story of Hunter’s abandoned laptop had to be misinformation because it threatened Joe Biden’s candidacy. So they manipulated social media to quash the story. They suspended it, banned anybody who talked about it. They called it Russian disinformation. And it worked. And they got the result they wanted. A reject from a Balance of Nature ad in the White House.  But that wasn’t enough, especially now that Elon Musk has bought their favorite toy, Twitter, and turned it into something called X. So now Musk must be stopped. Enter Media Matters. On Friday, they put out a report saying Nazi content ran on the app alongside corporate ads from major companies like IBM, Apple and Oracle. And so a bunch of companies suspended their ads on X. But now Musk is suing Media Matters, saying they manufactured the report. Apparently these companies were duped, like someone who bought Girl Scout cookies from Dylan Mulvaney. Be happy that’s all you bought. GREG GUTFELD: THIS USED TO BE CALLED INDECENT EXPOSURE But before we go any further, we should clarify what Media Matters really is. In case you don’t know. See, they’re this left-wing group funded by wealthy leftists while dishonestly positioning themselves as an impartial media watchdog. But the only part of that title that’s true is the dog part, because it made Chris Cuomo interviewing his brother seem impartial. Those were the days.   So why is this important? Because the mainstream media uses Media Matters, knowing that the public has no idea what it is and they won’t bother to check that it’s a front to silence people, specifically conservatives. But there’s really only one entity that’s worse than media matters. It’s the orbit of parasitic blogs — Mediaite, The Daily Beast, The Independent, Huffington Post, CNN’s Reliable Sources — who grab the Media Matters stories, add a few words to avoid plagiarism, and then repost them. They lie by telling only part of the truth. You know, it’s like when Joe Mackey says he ate at a food truck and it turns out to be an ice cream truck.  This amplify universe of lazy hacks feeds off one bowl of outrage Kibble. And because Fox is its target, we’ve kept more clowns employed than Barnum and Bailey. FNC might as well cut checks to these *** polyps directly. It’s kept Brian Stelter floating in a sea of Twinkies and The Daily Beast from going back to their old jobs making lattes.  So what did Media Matters do this time? Well, according to the lawsuit, first Media Matters went on X and followed a small subset of users from one of two categories those who post fringe content and big name advertisers. Then they kept refreshing the hand-selected feed until it got the result that it wanted. Controversial content next to paid posts from X’s largest advertisers. Then they took screenshots of it, claimed it was organic, and published an article about it. And this quickly panicked the cowardly advertisers, including IBM, Apple, Disney, Warner Brothers and Paramount. And so they fled like women when Keith Olbermann asked for their number.  It’s worth pointing out that some real journalists, Michael Shellenberger and his team at Public, tried to replicate Media Matters research and they couldn’t. So these advertisers fell for the ruse because they’re too scared and lazy to take a stand. Those company stockholders should be pissed and those companies should be embarrassed for pulling their ads based on made up *********. If you acted on what Media Matters told you, you should be fired. Taking directions from them on anything related to speech is like learning to freestyle rap from Joe Biden.  So now Musk is hitting Media Matters with, quote, a thermonuclear lawsuit for the fraudulent attack. But that’s not all. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is opening an investigation, saying it’s extremely troubled by these allegations and Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey is also joining the fight promising Musk he’s investigating Media Matters as well.  So why is this important? Because Media Matters is a hard left smear machine, yet it’s one coddled by the press who use that content to build their own crap. You may not have heard of Media Matters until today, but you can bet your liberal pals read their stuff regularly. Since CNN hacks like Stelter and Oliver Darcy rely on their fodder, they simply called the outfit a watchdog group.  GREG GUTFELD: CRIME-RIDDEN CITIES ALL HAVE ONE THING IN COMMON Media matters became their necessary but brain damaged henchman, a stupid, careless brute that does the dirty work that these lazy saps won’t do. So Media Matters, assuming they could get away with it, went after the richest, most capable man on earth, one with deeper pockets than most countries. But like Hamas, they went too far. And now you see the hacks circling the wagons. So why did Media Matters go after Musk in the first place? Because he’s a threat by caring only about the freedom of the press, which is exposing how vile these leftists are. So they need to take him out.  Right now, leftists are taking to the streets of America chanting antisemitic hate, tearing down posters of Jewish hostages, mainstream media repeats the lies of Hamas while second guessing everything Israel says and does when Jews are being barricaded inside college classrooms, I don’t see any Trump hats. If anybody’s acting like Nazis, it’s the left, i.e. Media Matters’ own team. So they’re doing what Nazis do, meaning they’ll do anything to destroy an enemy, even when what they call the enemy is actually their own country.  So I am so here for this. And you should be too, because it’s about time somebody exposes Media Matters until they don’t matter anymore. And although I’m no legal scholar, my money is on the guy who builds rockets, not lies.
