In potential cancer breakthrough, newly found ‘kill switch’ triggers death of cancer cells: ‘One-two punch’

In potential cancer breakthrough, newly found ‘kill switch’ triggers death of cancer cells: ‘One-two punch'

Researchers say they’ve located a “kill switch” that can trigger the death of cancer cells. Scientists at the UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center in Sacramento, California, have identified a protein on the CD95 receptor that can “program” cancer cells to die, as detailed in a study published in the journal Cell Death & Differentiation last month. A receptor is a protein within a cell that receives and transmits signals. LUNG CANCER PILL SHOWS ‘EARTH-SHATTERING’ RESULTS IN 5-YEAR STUDY: ‘AN OPTIMISTIC TIME’ CD95 receptors — also referred to as Fas — have gained the nickname “death receptors” because they send a signal that causes cancer cells to “self-destruct,” according to a press release from UC Davis. “Previous efforts to target this receptor have been unsuccessful. But now that we’ve identified this epitope (target), there could be a therapeutic path forward to target Fas in tumors,” Jogender Tushir-Singh, an associate professor in the Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology and senior author of the study, said in the release. Experts are hopeful that future cancer drugs could boost the activity of these CD95 receptors to create a new weapon against cancer tumors, which have been treated historically with surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. WHY IMMUNOTHERAPY IS EMERGING AS THE ‘FOURTH PILLAR’ OF CANCER TREATMENTS, EXPERTS SAY Immune-based therapies, such as CAR (chimeric antigen receptor) T-cell therapy, have shown promise for a subset of patients, but have had limited effectiveness against many cancer types. “Despite being decently successful in liquid tumors, such as leukemia spectrum cancers, long-term remission remains the biggest challenge for CAR T-cell therapies,” Tushir-Singh told Fox News Digital in an email.  The bigger challenge with this therapy — which typically costs $500,000 or more — is that it has only shown “meager success” in treating solid tumors, the researcher noted. “Our study strongly provides a comprehensive takeaway and potential solution to transform the meager success of CAR-T therapies into potentially successful [therapies for] solid tumors.” NEW PROSTATE CANCER TREATMENT COULD BE ON THE HORIZON, SAY UK RESEARCHERS: ‘TREMENDOUSLY EXCITING’ The newly discovered “kill switch” could terminate tumor cells while also helping to make immunotherapies more effective — “a potential one-two punch against tumors,” the release stated. Thus far, no CD95-boosting drugs have made it into clinical trials. “Despite many breakthroughs in the cancer immunotherapeutic field, targeting Fas remains neglected, primarily due to fear of retaliation against immune-system T-cells,” Tushir-Singh told Fox News Digital. The study did have some limitations — namely, there is limited data from clinical trials, the researcher noted.  Tushir-Singh pointed out, however, that cancer researchers can now go back and collect human tumor samples from clinical trials and perform new analyses in light of these findings. CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR OUR HEALTH NEWSLETTER “It is evident that the success of CAR-T therapy relies on off-target killing by Fas,” he told Fox News Digital.  “With the current information, we researchers and doctors should screen potential cancer patients — who would be undergoing CAR-T therapy — to check for the comprehensive presence of Fas on their tumors,” he went on.  “If a patient lacks Fas expression in his or her tumors, we need to find ways to safely manipulate these tumors and start making them Fas before giving costly CAR therapies. The latter would likely make the CARs more potent in long-term efficacy.” Looking ahead, Tushir-Singh said he is hopeful for the future of cancer treatments. “Due to the advent of cancer immunotherapy and other targeted therapies, cancer rates overall in the past decades have decreased significantly,” he said.  “I read every day the outstanding research that is happening in the U.S. to beat cancer. People should stay positive.” Added Tushir-Singh, “The next breakthrough is just one experiment away.” For more Health articles, visit www.foxnews.com/health.

Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves secures second term after Democrat opponent concedes

Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves secures second term after Democrat opponent concedes

Incumbent Republican Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves secured a second term at the helm of the Magnolia State after Democratic opponent conceded the race late Tuesday night. Reeves defeated Democrat Public Service Commissioner Brandon Presley — who is rock and roll legend Elvis Presley’s second cousin — in a contest closer than one might expect from ruby-red Mississippi. WHY THE GOVERNOR’S RACE IN MISSISSIPPI IS TURNING HEADS THIS YEAR Reeves touted his record as governor during a debate earlier this year, citing the state’s lowest unemployment rate in history, rising educational achievement levels and work with hospital leaders to prevent hospitals from closing. The Mississippi economy and healthcare, in particular Medicare expansion, became major issues in the race. Mississippi is the poorest state in the nation with a poverty rate of 18.1% in 2021, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Nearly half of the state’s rural hospitals are in danger of closing. The health care crisis is at the forefront of the current election cycle and topped off Wednesday night’s debate. The candidates spent nearly 13 minutes of the one-hour debate discussing Medicaid and health care reform.  Democrats have hammered Reeves for refusing Medicaid expansion. Fox News asked Reeves his response to these attacks, and he said the state believes in work, not welfare. “I don’t believe that we should add 300,000 able-bodied adult Mississippians to the welfare rolls,” said Reeves. “I don’t think that’s good public policy. I don’t think it’s good public policy for a lot of reasons, one of which is it would not provide the financial windfall that Democrats claim that it would for our providers.” Presley’s platform included expanding Medicare. The Cook Political Report shifted the 2023 Mississippi governor’s race from “likely Republican” to “lean Republican” two weeks ago. Reeves won by just 5% in 2019, marking the most competitive governor’s race in the state since 2003. According to a poll conducted early last month by Magnolia Tribune/Mason-Dixon, 51% would vote for Reeves if the election “were held today,” and 43% would vote for Presley. The GOP governor secured his second term in a close contest that saw Reeves weather attacks over a massive corruption scandal that broke out while he served as lieutenant governor. Reeves has denied any involvement in the scandal that saw six members of the Mississippi Department of Human Services divert about $77 million in federal welfare money meant for residents in need to pet projects. Reeves ran a pair of TV ads accusing Presley of breaking the law by accepting money from a solar energy company under his purview as a public service commissioner. Presley called this ad a “bald faced lie” and called out Reeves’ ad during the debate.

3 Big Ten schools shared Michigan signals ahead of last year’s conference title game: report

3 Big Ten schools shared Michigan signals ahead of last year's conference title game: report

The University of Michigan has reportedly sent information to the Big Ten claiming Rutgers, Ohio State and Purdue “engaged in communication about the Wolverines’ signals.” Prior to last year’s Big Ten championship game against Michigan, Purdue reportedly received offensive signals from OSU, while the New Jersey school allegedly sent defensive signals to the Boilermakers, accoring to ESPN. The new wrinkle in the case is not expected to affect any potential punishment for the Wolverines in their sign-stealing accusations. It also is unknown if these new allegations regarding Michigan’s Big Ten rivals violate NCAA rules or the conference’s sportsmanship policy. CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM All four schools involved did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Michigan announced last week that Connor Stalions, the accused ringleader of an alleged sign-stealing scheme, resigned after earlier reports said he was fired.  It was revealed Oct. 18 the NCAA was investigating the football program for stealing signs. Since the investigation began, more damning evidence of Stalions’ alleged involvement has emerged. An unnamed former coach from college football’s Division III claimed Stalions gave him “a couple hundred dollars” for the recordings of the Wolverines’ future opponents, ESPN reported. The coach added that he received free tickets and shared the footage via an iPhone photo album.  SUPER BOWL CHAMP RIPS USC’S CALEB WILLIAMS FOR CRYING AFTER GAME: ‘COME ON, MAN’ Stalions was also alleged to be on the Central Michigan sideline when the team played Michigan State Sept. 1, wearing a bench credential that said “VB,” a visiting bench designation. This gives access for the credential holder to stand between the 20-yard lines, which is usually for players, coaches, team trainers and equipment staff.  It’s been reported Stalions purchased tickets to more than 30 games at 11 different Big Ten schools over the past three seasons, including this season. Michigan was not playing in any of the games for which Stalions bought tickets, sources told ESPN. The Big Ten sportsmanship policy states that the conference “expects all contests involving a member institution to be conducted without compromise to any fundamental element of sportsmanship. Such fundamental elements include integrity of the competition, civility toward all, and respect, particularly toward opponents and officials.” Michigan beat Rutgers, 31-7, Sept. 23 and the Boilermakers, 41-13, Saturday. The Wolverines face the Buckeyes in Ann Arbor Nov. 26. Michigan has beaten Ohio State two years straight after losing each of the previous eight matchups.

Families of Hamas hostages describe broken hearts, child’s 9th birthday in captivity of terrorists in Gaza

Families of Hamas hostages describe broken hearts, child’s 9th birthday in captivity of terrorists in Gaza

Families of Israeli hostages held by Hamas inside Gaza appeared with lawmakers on both sides of the aisle Tuesday in Washington, D.C., to raise awareness for their loved ones, with one relative describing how a child celebrated his ninth birthday in captivity of terrorists.  Itay Raviv, speaking on the one-month anniversary of the Israel-Hamas war that began on Oct. 7, said getting the hostages released “should be the top priority of the entire world” and the “No. 1 thing that everyone discusses.”  “We don’t know again what their condition is. Ohad [Munder-Zichri] had a birthday two weeks ago on Oct. 23. He turned 9. He’s a smart, sweet boy who plays soccer and tennis and is very lovable,” Raviv said. “And he shouldn’t have spent his ninth birthday in captivity. He should not be in captivity at all.” Boaz Atzali then spoke about his 49-year-old cousin, Aviv, and wife Liat, whom he says adopted a three-legged special needs dog that was killed by Hamas militants during the Oct. 7 attack in southern Israel.  LIVE UPDATES: ISRAEL AT WAR WITH HAMAS  He told reporters in Washington that the killing of the animal demonstrates “what kind of cruelty” Hamas is capable of.  Atzali said what “breaks his heart” is that the couple has three kids, who now “lost both their parents on the same day.”  “They don’t know if they will ever see them again. They don’t know if they will get to hug them again,” he added.  At an event earlier with House Republican lawmakers, Doris Liber – the mother of Guy Iluz, a 26-year-old being held hostage – said the last words she heard on the phone from her son who was attending the music festival in southern Israel that was attacked by Hamas were “we are not going to survive it, nobody survived it, everybody was killed.”  “And I try to, tell him, ‘Guy, I love you,'” she continued. “Don’t worry. Nothing’s going to happen… I’m going to send somebody now to get you. And that’s what I did. I hung up and I regret that since I didn’t hear from him since.”  FAMILIES OF HAMAS HOSTAGES PLEAD FOR US ACTION  “I’m here because it’s been 30 days. Every day is like eternity to me. And I can’t wait any longer because I know that he was shot,” Liber added. “We don’t have a list of the hostages. We don’t know their condition. I don’t have anything, so I need your help.”  Yonatan Lulu-Shamriz, whose brother Alon is being held hostage, said on Oct. 7 that his younger brother wrote him a message saying terrorists entered his house in southern Israel.  “I wrote him that I love him and he’s strong. He send me a heart emoji. And that’s the last time we spoke,” he said.  “We need help now. We don’t know what is their condition. This is a call for action. And this is a wake-up call not only for Israel, not only for the Jewish community,” Yonatan Lulu-Shamriz added.  “This is a wake-up of all of you here, all of America, all of Europe. You are next. You are next. And we should do everything that we can to stop this atrocity.”

State Department staffers write internal memo demanding U.S. criticize Israel, support ceasefire

State Department staffers write internal memo demanding U.S. criticize Israel, support ceasefire

State Department staffers wrote a scathing internal memo urging the Biden administration to change its public stance toward Israel and support a ceasefire, Politico has reported. The leaked memo was submitted to the department’s Dissent Channel, where employees are invited to express policy disagreements, the outlet said. It is the latest incident showing internal strife within the department over the U.S. support for its closest ally in the Middle East. The message reportedly demands the U.S. support a ceasefire and be willing to publicly criticize “Israeli military tactics and treatments of Palestinians,” the outlet reported.  Staffers warned that the U.S. would appear a “biased and dishonest actor” in the war, if it did not air private criticisms of the Israel military. STATE DEPARTMENT OFFICIAL WHO RESIGNED OVER MILITARY AID TO ISRAEL DECRIES ‘WILLINGNESS TO ABANDON OUR VALUES’ “We must publicly criticize Israel’s violations of international norms such as failure to limit offensive operations to legitimate military targets,” the memo reportedly states. “When Israel supports settler violence and illegal land seizures or employs excessive use of force against Palestinians, we must communicate publicly that this goes against our American values so that Israel does not act with impunity.”” Politico reported that two midlevel staffers wrote this particular memo, but there were several other dissent memos over the Israel-Hamas war currently being shared within the department. The message “reflects the sentiments of many U.S. diplomats,” the report said. The State Department did not immediately return a request for comment on the matter. Fox News has previously reported disagreement within the State Department over the Israel-Hamas war.  Josh Paul, who worked for the State Department’s Bureau of Political-Military Affairs, resigned last month after Biden announced the U.S. would be supplying weapons to Israel. WOMAN IDENTIFIED AS STATE DEPARTMENT EMPLOYEE ACCUSES BIDEN ADMIN OF BEING ‘COMPLICIT’ IN ISRAEL ‘GENOCIDE’ “I cannot work in support of a set of major policy decisions, including rushing more arms to one side of the conflict, that I believe to be shortsighted, destructive, unjust, and contradictory to the very values that we publicly espouse,” he wrote to announce his resignation. A woman identified as a State Department employee has also accused President Biden and his administration of being “complicit in genocide” toward the people in Gaza and warned that it could stifle his re-election chances in 2024. “Hey @POTUS — so long as you keep showing absolute support for Bibi with no clear, actionable redlines or calls for ceasefire, you continue to support genocide,” Sylvia Yacoub wrote in one post on X. “Your rhetoric and approach from day one has resulted in the deaths of thousands. There is so much blood on your hands.” The Department previously declined to comment on social media posts by employees criticizing the U.S. policy toward Israel. However, spokesperson Matthew Miller said during a press briefing last month the department welcomes internal disagreements.  “We understand – we expect, we appreciate – that different people working in this department have different political beliefs, have different personal beliefs, have different beliefs about what United States policy should be. In fact, we think that’s one of the strengths of this government,” Miller said. “One of the strengths of this department is that we do have people with different opinions. We encourage them to make their opinions known. It, of course, is the President that sets policy, but we encourage everyone, even when they disagree with our policy, to let – to make their leadership know.” For more Culture, Media, Education, Opinion and channel coverage, visit foxnews.com/media.  Fox News’ Kyle Morris contributed to this report.

Inside the Lizzie Borden house, guests can stay overnight where people were brutally ax murdered

Inside the Lizzie Borden house, guests can stay overnight where people were brutally ax murdered

More than 130 years after the father and stepmother of American woman Lizzie Borden were ax murdered in this Massachusetts city, true crime lovers, ghost hunters and history buffs all flock to the home where the double homicides took place. Located at 230 Second Street in eastern Massachusetts is The Historic Lizzie Borden House, now a working bed and breakfast. Lance Zaal, the owner of the Lizzie Borden house and president of U.S. Ghost Adventures, closed on the sale of the dwelling in May 2021. ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY, AUGUST 4, 1892, LIZZIE BORDEN’S FATHER AND STEPMOTHER ARE MURDERED IN MASSACHUSETTS “The reason I bought the house is [that] it fit perfectly with what we do with spooky haunted tours across the United States,” Zaal told Fox News Digital in an in-person interview.  “We had plans to do more with physical locations — and the Lizzie Borden house was the perfect opportunity to do that.” Zaal said it’s the customers’ reactions that fulfill him as he operates the tourist attraction. ODDEST HOMES IN AMERICA INCLUDE THE ‘SMURF HOUSE’ AND ONE THAT’S ‘LEGALLY’ HAUNTED “I love people’s excitement, how people think through the crime scene. They can retrace the steps of the people that lived here and of course they can remember the victims who didn’t receive the justice that they deserved.” The murders took place in Fall River on the morning of Aug. 4, 1892, according to Britannica. HALLOWEEN HORROR MOVIE HOMES AND THE STORIES BEHIND THEM: WOULD YOU DARE TO VISIT? Lizzie Borden’s mother died when she was a child.  Her businessman father, Andrew Borden, later remarried; his new wife’s name was Abby Borden.  It’s said that Abby Borden went upstairs to make a bed — and at some point during the morning hours, she was attacked with an ax-like weapon.  Guests of the bed and breakfast today have the option to sleep overnight in that room, just inches away from where Abby Borden’s body was found. ‘HAUNTED’ ROCKING HORSE THAT REPORTEDLY MOVED FROM ROOM TO ROOM ON ITS OWN IS GOING UP FOR SALE The head of the ax — the murder weapon — was later found in the basement of the Borden home, according to Zaal. Andrew Borden came home early that day and was murdered on the couch after his wife was murdered.  While the amount of blows the couple suffered isn’t clear, it’s been estimated by various sources that they may have been struck 10 to 20 times. The only people who were home, aside from the two victims, were Lizzie Borden and the family’s 25-year-old maid, Bridget Sullivan, whom the family called Maggie, according to staff members who currently work at The Historic Lizzie Borden House. Several facts in the case suggest that Lizzie Borden may have been guilty, as written in an online article published by the UMKC School of Law titled, “Fourteen Reasons to Believe Lizzie Murdered Her Parents.” LITERARY LEGEND HAUNTED HOTEL FOR 53 YEARS UNTIL NEGLECTED REMAINS BURIED WITH FAMILY IN NYC, SAY HISTORIANS Lizzie Borden reportedly had a “strained relationship” with stepmother Abby Borden, and some money and property disputes existed in the family.  Also, Lizzie Borden was witnessed attempting to buy poison at a local drugstore, one day before the murders. Lizzie Borden became a prime suspect. She was arrested on Aug. 11, 1892, according to the Library of Congress.  She was found not guilty on June 20, 1893, in a trial by a jury of 12 men. IOWA SCHOOL-TURNED-MASSIVE MANSION HITS REAL ESTATE MARKET FOR $1.75M Staff members at the house say the evidence was circumstantial. “Although acquitted of the charges against her, the question of whether Lizzie Borden committed the murders remains to this day,” the Library of Congress wrote online. Andrew Borden reportedly had purchased his family home in 1872 due to its convenient location to his business. “Today, the house is just as it was,” The Historic Lizzie Borden House website states. “The furnishings retain their rightful place, the décor has been painstakingly duplicated, and the original hardware and doors are still intact.” WOMAN GOES VIRAL FOR UNCOVERING ‘WEIRD’ HOMES FOR SALE ON ZILLOW: ‘IT HAS TAKEN OFF’ “Artifacts from the murder case are displayed while memorabilia from the era line shelves and mantel tops,” says the site. “A visitor is literally transported back to that morning when a perfect storm of events culminated in a double murder.” Fox News Digital got a look inside the three-floor home, which has no hallways at all. Any visitor must go through one bedroom to get to another. ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY, AUGUST 31, 1888, JACK THE RIPPER CLAIMS HIS FIRST VICTIM Photos of the Borden family grace the walls — and images of the actual crime scenes are even displayed in the rooms where the ax murders occurred.  The restoration done to the house provides an eerie sense of what it must have been like to be present that day in 1892. 10 BEST FALL GHOST TOURS FOR SPINE-TINGLING FUN IN AMERICA Zaal and his staff of Borden aficionados run daily tours and overnight stays. Rates range from $285 to $311 per night depending on the room chosen. Guests can stay in the Lizzie and Emma suite (Lizzie Borden and her sister’s rooms, which are separated by one door only); the Andrew and Abby suite; the Andrew Jennings room (dedicated to the defense attorney for Lizzie Borden); the John Morse room (Andrew Borden’s brother, who was staying at the house during the murders); the Hosea Knowlton room (in the attic, dedicated to the lead prosecutor in the Borden trial); or the Bridget Sullivan room (where the family’s maid slept). PARANORMAL TIKTOKS DEBUNKED! MAGICIAN AND CONTENT CREATOR REVEAL HOW ‘GHOSTLY’ VIDEOS ARE ACTUALLY MADE Zaal noted that the room of Bridget Sullivan, the family’s maid, is where guests report a ton of paranormal activity — with claims of music boxes sounding off and furniture being found moved across the room without a human in sight. Check-in is at 5:00 p.m. and check-out is at 10:00 a.m.  To receive breakfast, guests must be seated in the dining room by 8:30 a.m. The entire home or a floor can also be rented for events such as weddings or other occasions. Zaal said that summer and the Halloween seasons are typically the busiest, which explains why October was nearly booked solid this year.  Some rooms are still available on certain dates in November for those who are still searching for a spooky experience before winter arrives this year. ‘ANGELS, DEMONS, SPIRITS AND SOULS DO EXIST,’ SAYS EXORCIST PRIEST WHO WARNS AGAINST OUIJA BOARD USE “I would say in the most popular month in October, we have probably seen 6,000 visitors coming through the house,” Zaal said.  “We’ve added new experiences here at the house and one of those is a ghost hunt that we offer nightly from 10:00 p.m. to midnight. And we just added ghost hunts from midnight to 2:00 a.m.” Zaal’s company, U.S. Ghost Adventures, is currently in 80 cities across America with various creepy-cool offerings for people to experience.  But with his acquisition of the Lizzie Borden house, Zaal and his team created a special ghost tour to explore the city of Fall River. CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR OUR LIFESTYLE NEWSLETTER “[The] Lizzie Borden house is just part of the city and just part of the city’s story,” he said. “We wanted to tell more about that story, about where Lizzie Borden was from, and where her family was from,” Zaal said. The gift shop sells hats, T-shirts, a “bloody” ax, mugs, bumper stickers, a Lizzie Borden board game, a bobblehead doll, refrigerator magnets and more.  Zaal said he plans on expanding guests’ experiences with more nightly ghost tours of the home, outdoor ax throwing, Victoria-era murder mystery nights and much more. Zaal promises an immersive, enjoyable and hauntingly good time with an accommodating staff that’s chock-full of Lizzie Borden knowledge. He also encourages visitors to record any spine-chilling encounters that may occur while they’re sleeping in the Lizzie Borden house. For more Lifestyle articles, visit www.foxnews.com/lifestyle.

On this day in history, November 7, 1962, transformative first lady Eleanor Roosevelt dies in NYC home

On this day in history, November 7, 1962, transformative first lady Eleanor Roosevelt dies in NYC home

Eleanor Roosevelt, who holds the distinction of longest-serving first lady and who helped guide the American people through the Great Depression and World War II, died after a two-year battle with baffling illnesses on this day in history, Nov. 7, 1962.  She was 78 years old.  “A shy, awkward child, starved for recognition and love, Eleanor Roosevelt grew into a woman with great sensitivity to the under-privileged of all creeds, races, and nations,” writes WhiteHouse.gov of the first lady who inhabited the executive mansion for 12 years (1933-45). ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY, NOVEMBER 6 “Her constant work to improve their lot made her one of the most loved — and for some years one of the most revered — women of her generation.” Born Anna Eleanor Roosevelt in New York City in 1884, she was orphaned at age 9, following the death of her mother, Anna Hall, and then her father, Elliott Roosevelt, the younger brother of President Theodore Roosevelt. Mrs. Roosevelt was raised amid privilege by her grandmother, Valentine G. Hall, in the Hudson River community of Tivoli, New York.  She married her distant cousin and future president, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, of nearby Hyde Park, in 1905.  She devoted her first years of their marriage to family life, giving birth to six children by 1916. CHRISTMAS IN NOVEMBER? PEOPLE REVEAL THE MOST AWESOME LIFE ‘GIFTS’ AHEAD OF THE HOLIDAYS “However, with American entry in World War I, she became active in the American Red Cross and in volunteer work in Navy hospitals,” reports the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum.  “In 1921, Franklin Roosevelt was stricken with polio, causing Mrs. Roosevelt to become increasingly active in politics in part to help him maintain his interests but also to assert her own personality and goals.” Her international profile rose with the election of FDR as president in 1933 and then America’s entry into World War II in 1941.  “She transformed the role of first lady,” writes WhiteHouse.gov.  “She never shirked official entertaining; she greeted thousands with charming friendliness. She also broke precedent to hold press conferences, travel to all parts of the country, give lectures and radio broadcasts, and express her opinions candidly in a daily syndicated newspaper column, ‘My Day.’” She chronicled her international exploits during global depression, world war and the United States’ emergence as a global superpower in the column from 1935 until near her death in 1962.  D-DAY 78 YEARS LATER: HOW FDR’S POWERFUL PRAYER UNITED AMERICANS “I often wonder if, in any way, we who are still on this earth could somehow tune ourselves better to the universe and get more real direction from those who must know so much more in the world beyond,” she wrote in her column in April 1950, mourning the five-year anniversary of the death of President Roosevelt.  “All we can do is to continue as best we can from day to day and hope that we follow the right path.” She continued to play an influential role in global affairs after her life in the White House. Most notably, she was an early leader in the emergence of the United Nations after World War II.  President Harry Truman appointed Eleanor Roosevelt as delegate to the United Nations General Assembly in 1946.  She served as the first chairperson of the organization’s Commission on Human Rights and led the drafting of its Universal Declaration of Human Rights, published in 1948. ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY. OCTOBER 14, 1912, TEDDY ROOSEVELT SHOT IN CHEST, MAKES CAMPAIGN STOP MINUTES LATER Roosevelt was posthumously awarded the United Nations Human Rights Prize in 1968.  The former first lady began to suffer serious illness in 1960, which often left her bedridden by fatigue. Her death is attributed to aplastic anemia, tuberculosis and heart failure.  But the various ailments in her final years confounded the medical community at the time.  “This condition, aplastic anemia, not only causes extreme fatigue but also presents a huge risk of overwhelming infections, severe bleeding spells and organ failure,” PBS News Hour reported in 2020, citing recent research by Dr. Allan B. Schwartz. CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR OUR LIFESTYLE NEWSLETTER “The chief problem was that none of her doctors knew what was causing her rare blood disorder. Given this was more than 50 years ago, the treatment options were rather limited.” Determined not to die in the hospital, Roosevelt defied doctors’ orders while still able and discharged herself on Oct. 18.  She returned to her home at 55 East 74th St. in Manhattan. “Her prognosis was poor — by Nov. 4 she appeared to have suffered from a cerebrovascular accident or stroke,” said PBS. “Three days later, she died in her own bed.” Roosevelt’s funeral was attended by sitting President John F. Kennedy, past presidents Harry Truman and Dwight Eisenhower, and future president Lyndon Johnson. She is buried next to her husband in Hyde Park, New York.  She is honored today, among many other tributes, with the Eleanor Roosevelt Memorial on Riverside Park on West 72nd Street in the Upper West Side of Manhattan, a short distance from where she last resided and died on Manhattan’s Upper East Side.  “Again and again, she was voted ‘the world’s most admired woman,’ in international polls,” The New York Times wrote in its obituary. “When she entered the halls of the United Nations, representatives from all countries rose to honor her. She had become not only the wife and widow of a towering president but a noble personality in herself.” For more Lifestyle articles, visit www.foxnews.com/lifestyle.

Fetterman hits Newsom for not having ‘guts’ to admit he’s running shadow campaign against Biden

Fetterman hits Newsom for not having 'guts' to admit he's running shadow campaign against Biden

Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., took a shot at California Gov. Gavin Newsom over the weekend over what many have referred to as a “shadow” presidential campaign against President Biden. “Let me say something that might be uncomfortable,” Fetterman said at a Democratic Party dinner in Iowa over the weekend. “Right now there are two additional Democrats running for Pennsylvania, excuse me, running for president right now. One, one is a congressman from Minnesota. The other one is the governor of California. They’re both running for president, but only one had the guts to announce it.” Fetterman continued, “I got to tell you, let me say I got an opinion. If you are a Democrat that wants to criticize and go after Joe Biden, our president, just go ahead and write a check for Trump.” The Pennsylvania Democrat was referencing a recent announcement from Democratic Rep. WHO IS BIDEN CHALLENGER DEAN PHILLIPS? 5 THINGS TO KNO “This trip here, he’s trying to build a base,” GOP Congressman Doug LaMalfa told Fox News Digital last month in response to some high profile trips Newsom has taken, including to China, as speculation grows that President Biden may not run for a second term. “He’s running the back channels until Biden takes himself out and the party says, ‘Man we’re going to get killed on this.'” Fetterman’s swipe at Newsom comes around the same time a New York Times-Siena College poll showed that Biden trails former President Trump in the key swing states of Nevada, Georgia, Arizona, Michigan and Pennsylvania. THREE WAYS BIDEN CHALLENGER DEAN PHILLIPS IS SENDING DEMOCRATS VALUABLE ADVICE A Monmouth University poll released earlier this month showed that 76% of voters agreed Biden, 80, was “too old” to serve another term, compared to just 48% who said the same about Trump, 77.  Newsom has denied he’s running for president multiple times, and when asked, he told NewsNation’s Chris Cuomo in September that he’s “not worthy of that conversation” and that Biden “deserves it.” The offices of Newsom and Fetterman did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Fox News Digital.

30 people dead in Kenya and Somalia as heavy rains and flash floods displace thousands

30 people dead in Kenya and Somalia as heavy rains and flash floods displace thousands

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — Heavy rains and flash flooding have killed at least 30 people and displaced tens of thousands in Kenya and Somalia, aid agencies reported Monday. In Somalia, the federal government declared a national emergency after the extreme weather killed at least 14 people and destroyed homes, roads and bridges. Emergency and rescue workers were trying to reach an estimated 2,400 residents trapped by flood waters in the Luuq district of southern Somalia’s Jubaland state. UNITED STATES INCREASING ASSISTANCE TO SOMALIA IN MILITARY OFFENSIVE AGAINST AL-SHABAB The U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs warned of a high risk of flooding along the Juba and Shabelle rivers and called for the evacuation of people living along the entire stretch of the Juba. The heavy rains in Somalia follow four consecutive years of drought that pushed the country to the brink of famine. In neighboring Kenya, the Kenya Red Cross said the death toll had risen to 15 since the heavy rains began Friday, with the port city of Mombasa and the northeastern counties of Mandera and Wajir the worst affected. As of Sunday, flash floods had destroyed 241 acres of agricultural farmland and killed 1,067 livestock animals, the Kenya Red Cross reported. Weather forecasters in Kenya started warning in September that the country would face heavier than usual rains during the short rainy season between October and December. President William Ruto contradicted the forecast, telling Kenyans that the experts had revised their advice and that “there would be no devastating El Nino flooding.” Heavy rains and flooding have also been reported in the Somali region of Ethiopia where thousands have been forced to flee their homes after houses and farmlands were destroyed by flood waters.

Priscilla Presley never remarried after Elvis because ‘no one could ever match him’

Priscilla Presley never remarried after Elvis because 'no one could ever match him'

Priscilla Presley’s burning love for ex-husband Elvis Presley has never been disputed, so much so that she just seemingly confirmed a famous rumor: that she vowed not to remarry while the King of Rock and Roll was alive. “I just don’t think that he could handle that,” she shared of the famed musician while answering questions at the South Point Casino in Las Vegas, per People. “To be honest with you, I never wanted to marry after him. I never had any desire.”  “No one could ever match him,” she admitted. PRISCILLA PRESLEY OPENS UP ABOUT ELVIS’ FINAL DAYS: WE ‘DIDN’T SEE IT COMING’ The couple met when Priscilla was only 14, marrying in 1967. They welcomed daughter Lisa Marie nine months after their wedding, but never had additional children. “Elvis felt he had a very busy schedule, and he did have a bit of guilt that he wasn’t around that much when Lisa was younger,” Priscilla shared of the couple’s decision to not expand their family. “With his scheduling and his touring, he just felt he wasn’t around enough to give a lot of attention to having another child.” Lisa Marie died in January from a small bowel obstruction. She was 54. LIKE WHAT YOU’RE READING? CLICK HERE FOR MORE ENTERTAINMENT NEWS CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR THE ENTERTAINMENT NEWSLETTER The couple was separated by 1972. Elvis filed for divorce on his 38th birthday in 1973, although they remained close. In 2018, while promoting the documentary, “Elvis Presley: The Searcher,” at SXSW, Presley acknowledged that losing her ex-husband was challenging. “It was difficult for all of us, we certainly didn’t see it coming. But we certainly saw the journey he was taking,” she recalled of the “Hound Dog” singer, who passed away in 1977. “People go, ‘well, why didn’t anyone do anything?’ Well, that’s not true. People there in the inner group did, but you did not tell Elvis Presley what to do. You did not. I mean, you’d be out of there faster than a scratched cat. They would try and no way. He knew what he was doing.” Presley has had several long-term relationships since the passing of her ex-husband. She welcomed son Navarone Garibaldi with her former love Marco Garibaldi in 1987. The couple lived together for 22 years, splitting in 2006. A representative for Priscilla did not immediately return Fox News Digital’s request for comment.

Cornell professor blames critical race theory indoctrination behind student suspect’s threats

Cornell professor blames critical race theory indoctrination behind student suspect's threats

ITHACA, NEW YORK – A Cornell University professor who has worked at the Ivy League institution for 35 years said that he was “not surprised” that someone from the student body has been accused of making threats against Jews, citing the prevalence of critical race theory ideology on campus.  Randy Wayne, an associate professor who works at Cornell School of Integrative Plant Science Plant Biology Section, reacted to the news that junior Patrick Dai was arrested on a federal complaint Tuesday for allegedly calling for the deaths of Jewish people online and threatening to shoot up an on-campus dining hall. “The viciousness I can’t explain,” he said. “[But] I’m not shocked because this is what we’re producing. This is our telos (aim) of social justice. This is our telos of separating people by identity. The students will tell you when they meet somebody, they have the victimhood Olympics. Let’s see who’s the most oppressed and just get your privilege that way.”  Wayne argues that adherence to the social justice ideology of critical race theory is anathema to truth, and the further an institution departs from the truth the more it invites totalitarianism. He believes that radicalism cannot be reached with reason if people are afraid to speak out to counter far-left perspectives.  MAJOR ‘POLITICAL SHIFT’ AMONG JEWISH CORNELL STUDENTS AS THEY QUESTION TIES TO PROGRESSIVE GROUPS “I think you can’t classify somebody as an identity. They’re individuals,” he said. “Initially people of color included Asians until they became a model minority that didn’t fit the narrative and then was taken out. I mean, the words have no meaning because the whole postmodern idea that there’s no objective truth is terrible. So if you’re compelled to say certain words, but you’ll be punished for misusing them, you just live in fear. And so the whole critical race theory has applied in the university is totalitarian and horrible, really horrible.”  In a string of disturbing posts on a website unaffiliated with Cornell, Dai allegedly threatened to “shoot up” a kosher cafeteria on campus, according to a federal complaint. In another post, Dai allegedly threatened to “stab” and “slit the throat” of any Jewish males he sees on campus, to rape and throw off a cliff any Jewish females, and to behead any Jewish babies in front of their parents, court papers said.  The posts were in response to the Israel-Gaza war, which has triggered alarming incidents of antisemitism in major cities and college campuses. According to a progressive student who spoke with Fox News Digital, left-wing students on campus narrowly view the Israelis as “White,” and therefore as an oppressor. The Palestinians are viewed as people of color, and therefore oppressed and morally righteous.  Wayne said Cornell students and faculty alike are terrified of speaking against the goals of social justice and critical race theory, fearing it will impact their future employment or promotional opportunities. This, in turn, causes a lack of free speech on campus, he said, where only the most radical left-wing perspective is heard. CORNELL STUDENTS REACT TO SUSPECTED ‘HAMAS FIGHTER’ ARREST BY DOJ: ‘TERRIFYING TO BE ON CAMPUS RIGHT NOW’ “People are so afraid of being canceled one way or the other that there’s not enough speaking to understand each other. And, you know, God forbid, you make a mistake,” the professor said. “People are afraid that if they say something that it will live forever somehow electronically. And then when they go to apply, for example, to law school, they’ll say, ‘Oh, we have this report on you.’”  Fox News Digital reached out to Cornell for comment and a spokesperson referred to previous statements from President Martha Pollack. “We cannot let ourselves be defined by the acts of one person, or even ten. While we denounce hatred loudly, we must also remember to cherish and celebrate all the good that so many members of our Cornell community do and live every day,” Pollack said.  CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP It added that Cornell will be including antisemitism education in its diversity, equity and inclusion program.  “We will not tolerate antisemitism at Cornell; indeed we will not tolerate hatred of any form, including racism or Islamophobia. What does this mean? It means, first and foremost, that when there are threats or incitement to violence, we will respond rapidly and forcefully, as we did in this case. It also means enhancing the prominence of our attention to antisemitism in our diversity and equity programing, both in online materials and in the programs that we require of and offer to our community. It means continuing to bring to campus speakers with expertise in antisemitism, its causes and strategies to intervene, as well as speakers with expertise in the history of the Jewish people.”  For more Culture, Media, Education, Opinion, and channel coverage, visit foxnews.com/media.

NASA surprised to discover ‘dinky’ moon orbiting asteroid in close flyby

NASA surprised to discover 'dinky' moon orbiting asteroid in close flyby

NASA’s Lucy spacecraft, which was launched in October 2021 to research Jupiter’s asteroids, snapped a picture of a smaller asteroid near Mars last week, which presented scientists with a shocking surprise. The asteroid Lucy snapped a picture of is named Dinkinesh, and it turns out the space rock has a dinky moon orbiting it. The Associated Press reported that the discovery was made when Lucy conducted a flyby of Dinkinesh in Mar’s main asteroid belt, nearly 300 million miles away. NASA SPACECRAFT CATCHES ‘EERIE FACE’ ON JUPITER The picture was reportedly taken when Lucy was 270 miles away from Dinkinesh, then sent the data and images back to earth. The findings included Dinkinesh’s size, which was just barely a half-mile across, and its tiny moon, about a tenth-of-a-mile across. The mission to snap pictures of Dinkinesh was a rehearsal for a much bigger mission, which is to look at the mysterious asteroids near Jupiter. NASA PUBLISHES NEVER-BEFORE-SEEN PHOTOS OF ‘RAVIOLI’ MOON ORBITING SATURN The 12-year-long mission, which launched on Oct. 16, 2021, is the first mission to the Jupiter asteroids. The asteroids are in orbits around the sun and are the same distance as Jupiter.  Lucy is expected to reach the first of the so-called Trojan asteroids in 2027 and explore them for at least six years. What started as a list of seven asteroids to research has grown to 11. CLICK HERE FOR MORE US NEWS The name Dinkinesh means “you are marvelous” in the Amharic language of Ethiopia. It is also the Amharic name for Lucy, the 3.2-million-year-old remains of a human ancestor found in Ethiopia in the 19702, for which the spacecraft is named. “Dinkinesh really did live up to its name; this is marvelous,” Southwest Research Institute’s Hal Levison, the lead scientist, said in a statement. The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Texans’ CJ Stroud sets rookie single-game records in dazzling comeback win over Bucs

Texans' CJ Stroud sets rookie single-game records in dazzling comeback win over Bucs

It’s safe the say the Houston Texans have found their man at quarterback after C.J. Stroud absolutely lit up his home field in a 39-37 victory against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday. Stroud rewrote the record books in the process, too. Stroud set the rookie passing yards record in a single game with 470 yards on 30-for-42 through the air with five touchdowns, including the game-winning score to rookie receiver Tank Dell who scored twice in his first multi-score game. CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM Baker Mayfield and the Bucs were in position to spoil Stroud’s party when he found Cade Otton to cap a 61-yard drive late in the fourth quarter to take a 37-33 lead. But Stroud, who was dissecting the Bucs’ defense all game long, didn’t care that clock wasn’t on his side when he took the field to try to pull off a miracle. Stroud only needed six plays, finding tight end Dalton Schultz, who had 10 catches and 130 yards with a touchdown in this one, with his first two throws to get near midfield. Then, Stroud located Noah Brown, who led the Texans with a massive 153 yards on six catches and a score, for 14 yards to get the ball over into Bucs’ territory. CHIEFS’ WILD FUMBLE-RETURN SEQUENCE LEADS TO IMPROBABLE TOUCHDOWN VS DOLPHINS The best throw of Stroud’s night came next as he found Dell running a beautiful route on the left sideline, and he got two feet in for 26 yards to place the Texans on the 15-yard line. With 10 seconds left, Stroud dropped back and fired to Dell for 15 yards in the end zone, sending off a massive celebration at NRG Stadium in Houston. This game truly had it all, including a Texans backup running back needing to kick emergency field goals and kickoffs. Dare Ogunbowale was used by head coach DeMeco Ryans to replace an injured Ka’imi Fairbairn, and he drilled a 29-yard field goal with 8:45 left in the fourth quarter that was, at one point, going to be the game-winning points before madness ensued at the end. The Bucs made it hard for Stroud to enjoy what he was doing on the field all game long as Mayfield and his unit kept firing back at the Texans. But there just wasn’t enough time on the clock when they got the ball back, fumbling on a miracle attempt at the end of the game. Mayfield finished 21-of-30 for 265 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. His running back, Rachaad White, scored two rushing touchdowns on 20 carries for 73 yards while hauling in four catches for 46 yards.  Mike Evans was the leading receiver for Tampa, catching four balls for 87 yards. Otton also had 70 yards on six catches with two touchdowns. The Texans, now 4-4, have a tough task next week when they travel to Cincinnati to face the Bengals. Meanwhile, the Bucs, now 3-5, have the Tennessee Titans next on their schedule.

Clemson's Dabo Swinney implores fans to buy stock in them after upset win over Notre Dame

Tigers head coach Dabo Swinney had been under fire from fans over the course of the week as Clemson hasn’t looked like its usual self this season. Swinney had an outburst with a fan during his radio show but followed it with the big win to improve to 5-4 on the season. CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM After the game, Swinney had a clear message for the naysayers. “We haven’t had much go our way this year,” Swinney told ESPN sideline reporter Molly McGrath. “The one thing that has shown up every week is the heart and the fight from Clemson.  “I know we’re down and everybody’s throwing dirt on us. But if Clemson’s a stock, you better buy all you freakin’ can buy right now.” Tigers running back Phil Mafah rushed for 86 yards and two touchdowns. Cade Klubnick threw for one more and Clemson was able to pick up the win. COLORADO’S SHEDEUR SANDERS RIPS REPORTER’S ‘SETUP QUESTION’ AFTER LOSS TO OREGON STATE Clemson also picked off Hartman twice in the game. Jeremiah Trotter Jr. and Kylon Griffin were the ones who created the turnovers. Trotter returned his interception for a touchdown. “It’s tough because there’s no one that loves us more than (Swinney) does,” Mafah said. “I personally take it personal, I know a lot of guys do, too, so we had to bring our all today.” With the win, Swinney is now the all-time winningest head coach in Clemson football history. Trump leading Biden in 5 key battleground states as voters cringe at Biden’s age: poll

Trump leading Biden in 5 key battleground states as voters cringe at Biden's age: poll

Former President Donald Trump holds sizable leads over President Biden in five of the six most important battleground states, according to a New York Times-Siena College poll released Sunday. Trump leads Biden by a whopping 10 points in Nevada, six points in Georgia, five points in both Arizona and Michigan, and four points in Pennsylvania. Biden’s sole lead is in Wisconsin, where he beats Trump by two points. Biden had defeated Trump in all six states during the 2020 election. Combining the polling in all six states gives Trump a 48-44 lead over Biden. The NYT-Siena College poll surveyed 3,662 registered voters in the six states from Oct. 22 to Nov. 3. ACLU BACKS TRUMP IN FIGHT AGAINST DC JUDGE’S GAG ORDER The polling attributes Biden’s poor showing to a devastating lack of confidence due to his age. Voters said they trusted Trump to better hand the economy, foreign policy and immigration. NEW YORK JUDGE FINES TRUMP $10K FOR VIOLATING PARTIAL GAG ORDER IN CIVIL FRAUD TRIAL Trump’s performance also came thanks to unprecedented levels of support from black voters, with a record 22% of the demographic siding with him over Biden across the six states, according to NYT. Trump currently holds a commanding lead in the 2024 Republican Presidential primary, with his closest competitors dozens of points below him. “The world is falling apart under Biden,” Spencer Weiss, a 53-year-old electrical substation specialist in Pennsylvania told NYT. Weiss added that he was flipping his 2020 vote away from Biden. “I would much rather see somebody that I feel can be a positive role-model leader for the country. But at least I think Trump has his wits about him.” Soon to be 81, Biden is the oldest candidate in U.S. history to run for president, followed closely by Trump at 77. An overwhelming 71% of respondents told NYT that Biden is “too old” to serve as an effective president.
