Unexpected hero app turns around terrifying travel trouble

Unexpected hero app turns around terrifying travel trouble

Meet Bill, a seasoned traveler from the Sarasota, Florida, area whose globetrotting tales could fill volumes. But today’s story isn’t about exotic destinations or close shaves at foreign airports.  It’s about a reservation gone awry within the bustling city of Buffalo, New York. Weeks before his trip, Bill, meticulous as ever, had booked a room at a Marriott-branded hotel in neighboring Amherst. He’d received all the confirmations — texts, emails and even the reassuring green check mark on the Marriott Bonvoy app. His room was booked, he was checked-in on the app, and his mind was at ease. CLICK HERE TO GET MY FREE CYBERGUY REPORT NEWSLETTER WITH SECURITY ALERTS AND THE LATEST BLACK FRIDAY DEALS Arriving for a 4-night stay Fast-forward to a chilly 58-degree evening in Buffalo. The city was alive with the energy of a much-anticipated NFL football game. Fans from near and far had flocked to the city, filling up every nook and cranny, but Bill wasn’t worried. He had his confirmed reservation, or so he thought. Upon arriving at the Marriott-branded Reikart Hotel with a smile and his reservation details in hand, Bill was met with an apologetic but firm “no room at the inn.” Despite his confirmed reservation, made well in advance, there was no record of his booking. A glitch in Marriott’s technology had failed to communicate his reservation for the hotel in neighboring Amherst, leaving him stranded. DUTCH GOVERNMENT DITCHES PLAN TO REDUCE TRAFFIC AT AMSTERDAM’S SCHIPHOL AIRPORT MORE: NEW ONLINE TRAVEL TOOL MAKES IT EASIER TO USE POINTS INSTEAD OF PAYING FOR HOTEL SAYS When you are turned away holding a confirmed hotel reservation Seeking assistance from Marriott’s corporate hotline yielded nothing but frustration. Marriott corporate confirmed he indeed had a reservation, but locally, the hotel’s system clearly showed there was no reservation. On that critical night in Buffalo, they offered no viable solutions to this frequent loyal guest. “We were given no lodging options … and basically, after about an hour of trying to come to a resolution, we were sent into the night to fend for ourselves,” said Bill. Bill was stranded, a seasoned traveler without a bed. MORE: THE BEST TRAVEL GEAR FOR 2023 How to turnaround travel trouble with apps Optimistic and unfazed, Bill and his travel posse pulled up the Marriott Bonvoy app for a solution. No luck. Sold out. Then, they tried the HotelTonight app, known for its last-minute bookings. Not a room in sight, but Bill’s travel-savvy didn’t stop there. Out of dwindling choices, his partner waiting in the car turned to Airbnb, an unlikely beacon of hope for stranded souls, and there it was — an instant booking available for a charming guest home just a mile away. Unexpected solution everyone should know about He secured the booking with lightning speed and messaged the host, who had just received a cancellation. Serendipity was on Bill’s side. From a traveler without a room to a guest in a cozy house nearby, Bill’s fortunes had turned. Bill’s ordeal is more than a tale of technological mishaps; it’s a testament to the power of alternative platforms like Airbnb. When traditional systems failed him, Airbnb unexpectedly rose to the occasion, not just as a platform for vacation planning but as a lifeline for stranded travelers with the “Instant Book” feature. From Marriott’s failure to Airbnb’s success We reached out to Mariott’s corporate offices, as did Bill having written a detailed letter to its CEO. A Marriott spokesperson offered us this short statement, “We take customer feedback seriously and work directly with guests to resolve any concerns.” Shortly after our inquiry, Bill received a response from Marriott acknowledging the technical snafu and offering to pay for one of his four nights at the Airbnb he had found to rescue him from the menacing Marriott meltdown. So, if you ever find yourself in a situation like Bill’s, remember that there might just be a charming guest home waiting to welcome you in a jam, all thanks to the unsung last-minute hero of modern travel: Airbnb. Pro tip: Download crucial travel apps like Airbnb and HotelTonight in advance of your trip and pre-populate an account with your credit card in case you need to act quickly like Bill to rescue yourself when others do nothing to solve their promise of a roof over your head. Republicans warn Biden admin’s foreign farm worker rule is ‘giveaway to Big Labor’

Republicans warn Biden admin's foreign farm worker rule is 'giveaway to Big Labor'

FIRST ON FOX: Republicans are calling on the Biden administration to withdraw a rule reforming the H-2A agricultural worker visa program — claiming that it is a “giveaway to Big Labor” and infringes on the property rights of farmers. “The proposed rule exceeds DOL authority, is a giveaway to Big Labor, infringes on farmers’ property rights, and is overly burdensome in numerous other ways,” House Education and Workforce Committee Chair Virginia Foxx and Agriculture Committee Chair Glenn Thompson wrote to Acting Labor Department Secretary Julie Su. The Department announced the rule in September, which builds on a rule published last year concerning the H-2A program — which grants temporary or “nonimmigrant” visas to foreign farmworkers.  REPUBLICANS GRILL LABOR DEPT ON FARM WORKER VISAS, AS OFFICIAL WARNS OF TERRIBLE CONDITIONS  As a move designed to address concerns about abuse of workers in the program, the rule expands workers’ rights to invite guests — including union officials — to employer-provided housing and meetings with employers. It would also require employers to provide lists of workers to requesting labor organizations. The Biden administration says the move increases transparency. The rule also makes new wage rates applicable immediately, rather than weeks later. It would also require employers to provide transport to worksites that includes seatbelts in response to safety concerns. It would also establish six conditions that would need to be met in order to terminate a worker for cause. BIDEN ADMIN MULLS MOVE TO OPEN PATHWAYS TO GREEN CARDS FOR TEMPORARY AGRICULTURAL, SEASONAL MIGRANT WORKERS “This proposed rule would strengthen protections for H-2A farm workers who are particularly vulnerable to labor abuses, empower them to advocate for fair treatment and ensure that their employment does not depress labor standards and undercut domestic farm workers,” Su said in a statement. “The administration is committed to protecting all workers, and this proposal would significantly advance that effort.” But the Republicans say that the union strengthening could be unconstitutional and could interfere with farm work. “The proposed rule puts its thumb on the scale to favor labor unions in several ways that exceed DOL’s authority and are contrary to congressional intent,” they say, arguing that the agency does not have the authority to impose the mandates. They also warn that the lists being required to be provided to unions is in fact a “wish-list” from Big Labor. “The proposed rule additionally requires employers to provide to a labor union a plethora of personal information on workers upon the union’s request and allows only one week of response time to such a request,” they say. “This information includes the workers’ full names, dates of hire, job titles, work location addresses, personal email addresses, personal cellular telephone numbers, profile names for messaging applications, home country addresses, and home country telephone numbers.| They also object to the inclusion that employers satisfy certain criteria before firing an H-2A worker for cause, arguing that it could interfere with the need to terminate a worker for safety reasons. “The proposed rule is thus overly burdensome to employers and may harm the interests of workers,” they say. They also argue that the limited time to adjust wages after the agency publishes wage rates is “an unnecessary change that will be challenging, if not impossible, for employers to meet.” “DOL needs to withdraw this proposed rule and go back to the drawing board,” the lawmakers say.

Trump to remain on Michigan ballot after judge rejects 14th Amendment challenge to eligibility

Trump to remain on Michigan ballot after judge rejects 14th Amendment challenge to eligibility

Former President Donald Trump will remain on Michigan’s ballot for the state’s 2024 presidential primary, a judge ruled on Tuesday. Trump’s opponents have argued in multiple states that the former president is ineligible for office under the 14th Amendment. They state that Trump’s actions surrounding the Jan. 6 storming of the U.S. Capitol constituted insurrection against the U.S. Michigan Court of Claims Judge James Redford rejected that argument, however. “The judicial action of removing a candidate from the presidential ballot and prohibiting them from running essentially strips Congress of its ability to ‘by a vote of two-thirds of each House, remove such a disability,'” Redford wrote. ATTEMPT TO BAR TRUMP FROM 2024 BALLOT GAINS STEAM DESPITE ‘DUBIOUS’ AND ‘DANGEROUS’ LEGAL ARGUMENTS: EXPERTS “The question of whether he is ineligible due to Section 3 of the 14th Amendment presents a political question that is nonjusticiable at the present time,” the judge continued. “The question of whether Donald Trump is qualified or disqualified from appearing on the 2024 general election ballot in Michigan is not ripe for adjudication at this time.” CASES IN COLORADO, MINNESOTA SEEK TO STOP TRUMP FROM BECOMING PRESIDENT AGAIN Trump is facing a similar effort to remove him from the primary ballot in Colorado. Currently pending is a decision out of a Colorado lawsuit. Watchdog group Citizens for Responsibility and six Colorado voters filed their lawsuit in September to block Trump from appearing on the primary ballot, citing the 14th Amendment.  TRUMP CAMPAIGN SAYS 14TH AMENDMENT ADVOCATES USING ‘LAWFARE’ TO ‘DEPRIVE’ VOTERS OF CHOICE IN 2024 The Trump team has made multiple motions to dismiss the case, but Judge Sarah B. Wallace has rejected them. So far, however, none of the attempts to get Trump removed from a ballot have been successful. The Minnesota Supreme Court dismissed a lawsuit seeking to block Trump’s candidacy this week. Courts also swatted down a similar move in New Hampshire. New Jersey’s First Lady Tammy Murphy announces Senate bid

New Jersey's First Lady Tammy Murphy announces Senate bid

New Jersey First Lady Tammy Murphy on Wednesday announced her candidacy for Senate seat currently occupied by Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J. “I’m Tammy Murphy and I’m running for U.S. Senate to fight for New Jersey, our families and our democracy,” Murphy posted on X. Her husband is New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy (D).  Murphy enters the Democratic Senate primary as Menendez faces criminal charges of acting as a foreign agent and accepting hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes to benefit the Egyptian government through his “power and influence as a Senator,” according to the superseding indictment filed by a grand jury in Manhattan last month. Also running is Rep. Andy Kim, D-N.J., who declared his candidacy in September, becoming the first Democrat to challenge Menendez. This is a developing story and will be updated. Fox News Digital’s Jamie Joseph contributed to this report.

Israeli troops enter Al-Shifa Hospital after killing Hamas terrorists in gate-side firefight

Israeli troops enter Al-Shifa Hospital after killing Hamas terrorists in gate-side firefight

Israeli troops have entered Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza following a firefight with Hamas terrorists at the gate on Wednesday. Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) had surrounded the facility for days, saying Hamas had placed its headquarters in tunnels beneath the hospital. While Hamas denies the claim, its fighters engaged in intense gunbattles with Israeli troops around the complex. At least one doctor at the hospital said Israel warned staff of their plans to enter the complex on Wednesday. Troops say they brought medical supplies for patients inside, who had suffered for days under dwindling supplies and fuel. “Before entering the hospital our forces were confronted by explosive devices and terrorist squads, fighting ensued in which terrorists were killed,” the IDF said in a statement. WATCH: BIDEN OFFICIAL, REPORTER CLASH IN HEATED DEBATE OVER ADMIN ALLOWING BILLIONS IN FUNDING FOR IRAN “We can confirm that incubators, baby food and medical supplies brought by IDF tanks from Israel have successfully reached the Shifa hospital. Our medical teams and Arabic speaking soldiers are on the ground to ensure that these supplies reach those in need,” it added. NEWLY RELEASED PHOTOS SHOW MYSTERIOUS COCAINE DISCOVERED IN WHITE HOUSE The fate of the hundreds of patients inside the hospital had been a focus of international concern for days prior to Israel’s assault. The hospital said that at least two children born prematurely had died due to a lack of available medical care. Israel says it attempted to provide some 300 liters of fuel to the hospital earlier this week, but that Hamas administrators had refused to exchange. WH REFUSES TO SAY IF IT WILL SUPPORT COOPERATION WITH SUBPOENA IN BIDEN CLASSIFIED DOCS INVESTIGATION Dr. Ahmed El Mohallalati, a surgeon at the hospital, told Reuters that Israel had informed staff that they planned to enter the hospital and search it. Israel has yet to reveal the results of a search as of early Wednesday morning. “We realized that the tanks are moving around the hospital. One of the big tanks entered within the hospital from the eastern main gate, and they were, they were they just parked in the front of the hospital emergency department,” Mohallalati told the outlet. White House officials confirmed Israel’s claim that Hamas was using the hospital as a base on Tuesday. “I can confirm for you that we have information that Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad used some hospitals in the Gaza Strip, including Al-Shifa, and tunnels underneath them to conceal and support their military operations and to hold hostages,” Kirby told reporters while aboard Air Force One.

Pink hit with Community Notes for false claim FL schools banned ‘To Kill a Mockingbird,’ ‘Diary of Anne Frank’

Pink hit with Community Notes for false claim FL schools banned 'To Kill a Mockingbird,' 'Diary of Anne Frank'

Music superstar Pink was hit with Community Notes on X for falsely claiming some of the most celebrated books were banned in Florida schools due to pornography.  On Monday, the singer went viral with her attack on Florida’s education reform laws that crack down on books that aren’t age-appropriate.  “The following are some titles of books that have been banned from schools in Florida…. Lmk which book is pornography…. To Kill A Mockingbird, The Hate You Give, Forrest Gump, A Catcher In The Rye, The Hill We Climb, Girls Who Code, Atlas Shrugged, 1984, The Kite Runner, The Bluest Eye, A Wrinkle In Time, The Diary of Anne Frank, The Fault In Our Stars, etc etc.,” Pink wrote. BOOKS AREN’T BEING BANNED AT SCHOOL. BUT DEMOCRATS, MEDIA DO DEFEND PORN FOR KIDS IN SCHOOL LIBRARIES Critics piled on the Grammy-winning artist so much that her post was slapped with a disclaimer saying, “This list has been proven incorrect.” “These books are not banned in Florida. In fact, some are on Florida’s required reading list,” the Community Notes read. The notes also included a link to an August 2022 article from USA Today debunking the fabricated list when it initially emerged. But that hasn’t stopped Pink from taking her advocacy on the road. Earlier this week, she announced she would be giving away 2,000 “banned” books at her upcoming concerts in Florida.  BANNED BOOKS WEEK ISN’T REAL. IT’S JUST PROPAGANDA FOR LEFTIST LIBRARIANS BIDEN CALLED OUT FOR CLAIMS ABOUT ‘BANNING’ BOOKS AND HISTORY: ‘THIS IS, OF COURSE, A LIE’ “I’m a voracious reader and I’m a mom of two kids who are also voracious readers. I can’t imagine my own parents telling me what my kids can and cannot read — let alone someone else’s parents, let alone someone else that doesn’t even have children that are deciding what my children can read,” Pink said on Instagram.  Representatives for Pink did not immediately respond to Fox News’ request for comment. Florida’s education reform efforts were the subject of intense scrutiny among liberal critics over the past year, especially since the Sunshine State’s Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis was seen as a serious presidential contender.  While classics like “Catcher in the Rye” and “Atlas Shrugged” were never actually banned under the DeSantis administration, a selection of books were pulled from school libraries after they were deemed to have pornographic material, most notably “Gender Queer.” For more Culture, Media, Education, Opinion and channel coverage, visit foxnews.com/media.

Maryland middle school DEI teacher under investigation for Israel-Hamas comments: ‘Hamas did not start this’

Maryland middle school DEI teacher under investigation for Israel-Hamas comments: 'Hamas did not start this'

A Diversity, Equity and Inclusion teacher at a Maryland middle school is being investigated over a social media posts suggesting the Hamas terrorists’ attack on Israel was a hoax and other posts about the war in the Middle East. Sabrina Khan-Williams, a World Studies teacher and a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion team leader at Tilden Middle School, made a series of posts doubting reports about Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack against Israel, according to Facebook screenshots obtained by The Daily Wire. “Debunked!! No music festival attack. Babies were not burned. Women were not violated,” she wrote in one post. More than 11,000 people have been killed in Gaza and Israel since Hamas launched its largest attack against Israel in decades on Oct. 7, prompting a military response from Israeli forces. Thousands more have been wounded, and many others have been taken hostage by Hamas and raped, tortured and murdered. PROFESSOR WHO PRAISED HAMAS ‘RESISTANCE FIGHTERS’ ON GLIDERS NO LONGER EMPLOYED BY EMORY UNIVERSITY Kahn-Williams suggested in another post that Hamas did not start the war against Israel. “Hamas did not start this. They were just the perfect vehicle for Zionists to continue its apartheid,” she wrote. According to The Daily Wire, the teacher shared videos from conspiracy theorists and opinion columns from Arab media, including one video that depicted Jews as killing Palestinians to cut their organs out and sell them. “Palestinian’s [sic] are being killed and their organs are being sold,” Kahn-Williams said. Kahn-Williams teaches in Bethesda, Maryland, which has a significant Jewish population. ISRAELI UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT TOURS US CAMPUSES TO URGE ACTION ON GROWING ANTISEMITISM Tilden Middle School principal Sapna Hopkins said in a letter to families on Monday that the posts “undermined” the values of the school, including “respect and belonging,” according to Fox 5 DC. Hopkins said she contacted the Office of Student Welfare and Compliance and the Office of Student Support and Well-Being to help with the school’s response to the posts. She explained that the incident was reported to the appropriate school district department responsible for initiating an investigation. “I understand the deep distress and hurt this incident has caused our community. We strive to be a No Place for Hate school. It is evident from recent events that we are not there yet. I acknowledge that we have work to do to live up to our values of respect and inclusion,” Hopkins wrote. “I am confident that we can emerge from this incident stronger and more united in our commitment to non-discrimination, equity, and cultural proficiency,” she added.

Taylor Swift, Travis Kelce meet the parents: Who’s who in each famous family

Taylor Swift, Travis Kelce meet the parents: Who's who in each famous family

As their relationship continues to blossom under the media spotlight, Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce look to be seeking some normalcy, introducing each other to their families. Because nothing says “signed, sealed, delivered” like the approval of a parent.  Swift and Kelce have been spotted out multiple times with each other’s parents. And after Taylor cheered for her man at several Kansas City Chiefs games with Travis’ parents, last weekend was her turn to shine.  Travis enjoyed her concert in Argentina in a VIP tent with Taylor’s dad, Scott Swift, while his mom Donna Kelce was spotted taking in Taylor’s “The Eras Tour” concert film in Florida.  TAYLOR SWIFT RUNS TO KISS TRAVIS KELCE AFTER HE ATTENDS HER SECOND ERAS SHOW IN ARGENTINA Originally from Cleveland, Donna Kelce is a proud mother to NFL players Jason and Travis. Photographed at several Kansas City Chiefs games seated alongside Swift, Donna has been subdued with the media when discussing her son’s relationship, admitting on the “Today” show in October her time spent with Swift was “OK.”  “It’s just one of those things where, you know, obviously, everybody saw me. … I was in the boxes with [Swift]. … It’s just another thing that’s amped up my life,” Donna said.  More than a month later, Mama Kelce seems to have softened, attending a central Florida showing of Swift’s “Eras Tour” movie. Dannielle Sparks, a muralist and massive Swift fan, noticed a woman enter the movie theater who looked strikingly similar to Kelce’s mother.  Sparks told Fox News Digital the woman was with a friend. “They were just like chill the whole movie. …Everyone else was like dancing and singing, having fun. And it seemed like they were just enjoying the experience. … I mean, it’s a long movie. She sat there and watched it with the rest of us.” WATCH: TRAVIS KELCE’S MOM ATTENDS TAYLOR SWIFT MOVIE IN CENTRAL FLORIDA, MEETS FAN After the film was over, the women flocked to the restroom, where Sparks felt motivated to say something. Sparks first mentioned something to Donna’s friend, who played if off like the resemblance was a coincidence. After exiting the restroom, Donna introduced herself but cautioned that she was “just a mom.” “I was like, ‘No! You’re the mother. You’re such a great mom to such amazing children. Like, it’s a big deal. Don’t just downplay it,” Sparks remembers telling her. “She let my mother-in-law take a photo of me and her together, which was really nice. She didn’t have to do that, you know?”  Things got interesting when Sparks says Mama Kelce made her way outside, where she and her friend were trying to take a picture with the Taylor movie marquee.  “I was like, ‘Oh do you want me to just take your photo for you? Like, I can do that,'” Sparks remembers asking. “And she was like, ‘No … Well, actually, yeah. Thank you. I need to send one to Travis to tell him I came to the movie.’ And I was just like, what? “Me and my husband were talking about it,” Sparks added, “I think she’s probably just so happy that her kids have reached such a level of success. Like you would never trade that for anything. So, she’s supporting them the best way she can.” Sparks did note that Donna respectfully rejected her friendship bracelet. Fans of Swift often exchange bracelets at her concerts.  Travis Kelce’s father and Donna’s ex-husband, Ed, recently spilled what he found to be the most endearing thing about Swift, whom he called “a very, very sweet, very charming, down-to-earth young woman.”  Ed and Donna split after 25 years of marriage. The two are still close friends. “I’ll tell you something very special that I noticed about Taylor the first time I met her,” Ed told People magazine. “We’re sitting in the suite. She gets up and in the front room. She gets up to go get a drink or something, and she starts picking up empty bottles, cans, plates that are scattered around. “Because, in the suites, everybody gets stuff and you empty it down wherever you can. … And I’m just thinking, ‘I don’t think she got the diva memo,'” he said of the 12-time Grammy Award winner. LIKE WHAT YOU’RE READING? CLICK HERE FOR MORE ENTERTAINMENT NEWS “She didn’t get the spoiled musician. She doesn’t know how to pull that off. And that really to me said a whole lot.” During Week 3 of the NFL season, Swift appeared at her first Kansas City Chiefs game to cheer on Kelce. Seated in a suite with Donna, fan-captured video showed the star tidying up. WATCH: TAYLOR SWIFT CHEERS ON THE CHIEFS, HELPS CLEAN UP THE SUITE During an episode of his joint podcast “New Heights” with brother Jason, Travis joked about his father’s interactions with Swift.  “If you were watching the game, you saw something momentous happen. … Taylor Swift talking to Ed Kelce,” Jason began. “Yeah, Taylor talking to Dad. … You know Dad, like I know Dad,” Travis added.  “Which is, he shouldn’t be talking to Taylor,” Jason said with a laugh. “This is a terrifying conversation. I felt terrible,” Travis said. “All he’s doing is just absolutely pumping her up. He started listening to her music a little more.” “It was nice because mom has been getting quite a bit of the spotlight,” Jason noted of Donna. “So, it was cool to see dad up there on the jumbotron.” Scott Swift, a former financial adviser, is a close confidant to his daughter. He and his ex-wife Andrea raised Swift and their son Austin in rural Pennsylvania before moving to Tennesee for Swift’s career. Often caught playing the role of doting dad, videoing his daughter during many of her performances, Scott was spotted rocking a Chief’s lanyard while standing next to the tight end. This time, Kelce was on Swift’s turf, attending her Saturday night concert in Argentina Nov. 12.  The two men shared a sweet moment when they both realized Swift had changed the lyrics of her song “Karma” to include a nod to Kelce. CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR THE ENTERTAINMENT NEWSLETTER “Karma is the guy on the Chiefs, coming straight home to me,” she sang. A fan captured video that showed Scott alongside Travis celebrating the lyric change. WATCH: TAYLOR SWIFT CHANGES THE LYRICS TO HER SONG ‘KARMA’ TO REFERENCE TRAVIS KELCE: Although divorced, Scott and Andrea are frequently together and beside Swift during her biggest moments. The only elusive parent in this “meet the parents” narrative is Andrea, the daughter of American opera singer Marjorie Finlay. Although it’s possible she has met her daughter’s new beau, Andrea has not yet been photographed out in public with Travis. Swift and her mother are close, and the singer has written several songs about her.  Fox News Digital’s Julia Bonavita contributed to this report.

New Jersey parents of Tennessee college student killed by stray bullet say laws ‘protect’ repeat criminals

New Jersey parents of Tennessee college student killed by stray bullet say laws 'protect' repeat criminals

Jillian Ludwig, an 18-year-old freshman at Belmont University in Nashville, was jogging in a public park just blocks away from campus on a sunny afternoon last Tuesday when a stray bullet struck her in the head, killing her. “Her roommate said she had been going [jogging] three to four times a week,” the New Jersey native’s mother, Jessica Thorn Ludwig, told Fox News Digital. “She had pretty recently taken up jogging, running, just for some exercise. It was a healthy habit that she was forming, as ironic as that is.” Ludwig was running on a track in Edgehill Community Memorial Gardens Park, just northeast of Belmont’s campus, between classes around 2:20 p.m. on Nov. 7 when she was struck by gunfire that was allegedly intended for another target, according to the Nashville Police Department. Nashville police arrested repeat offender Shaquille Taylor, 29, in connection with the shooting that left Ludwig initially hospitalized in critical condition before she was pronounced dead on Nov. 8. TENNESSEE COLLEGE STUDENT, 18, KILLED IN NASHVILLE PARK BY SHOOTER WITH PRIOR ARRESTS: COPS Taylor is currently charged with aggravated assault and evidence tampering in connection with the shooting. A judicial commissioner set the suspect’s bond at $280,000. “It was entirely preventable. And the laws in place failed,” Ludwig’s father, Matt Ludwig, said.  Thorn Ludwig said she doesn’t want “any other parents to live through this nightmare that we’re going through.” NASHVILLE POLICE SAY 7 ON ADMIN ASSIGNMENT AFTER PURPORTED LEAK OF CHRISTIAN SCHOOL SHOOTER’S MANIFESTO “Our lives will never be the same. She had so much to offer this world. She was such a bright light and she was definitely going places and everybody knew it,” she said. “We’ve had so much feedback from the staff and the students at Belmont in the short three months that she was there. No doubt she was going places, and her whole future was robbed due to careless laws.” A criminal affidavit states that Taylor was allegedly aiming toward a target named “Lil Greg,” who was driving in the area when the suspect allegedly shot in his direction, where Ludwig was walking at the same time.  SECOND SUSPECT IN ALLEGED NASHVILLE RAPE OF COLLEGE STUDENT NABBED AFTER WEEKS ON THE RUN Taylor apparently fled the scene and returned to his apartment, where he tried to dispose of his gun and told his girlfriend that he had been involved in a shooting, police said in an affidavit.  Davidson County records show that Taylor was released after being charged with three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in 2021 and theft of more than $10,000 in September. The aggravated assault case was dismissed after Taylor was found incompetent to stand trial, according to the Nashville District Attorney’s Office. NASHVILLE SUSPECTS IN ATTACK ON COLLEGE STUDENTS HAVE LENGTHY RAP SHEETS Shayla Workman, one of the victims from the aggravated assault incident in 2021, told WTVF that Taylor shot at her and her two young children while she was driving.  At a competency hearing in April, “three court appointed doctors unanimously testified that Mr. Taylor was incompetent to stand trial” due to an intellectual disability and language impairment, DA Glenn Funk said in a statement last week. READ THE ORDER: “[Tennessee] and Federal law prohibit prosecution of persons found to be incompetent, so therefore Judge Angelita Dalton was mandated to dismiss the case,” Funk said. “Because the doctors did not find Mr. Taylor met the standards for involuntary commitment, he was released from custody on May 19, 2023.” At least two doctors must have certificates saying a person is “suffering from a severe mental illness or developmental disability that causes the person to be a substantial risk of serious harm to himself or others” in order for that person to remain in custody under Nashville law, Funk said. “The doctors must also find that there are no other less restrictive measures than commitment.” The DA added that the “law must be altered to accurately balance individual needs with public safety,” and “Tennessee must provide more beds and staffing resources to handle dangerous individuals.” CHARGES FILED IN MYSTERIOUS DEATH OF COLLEGE STUDENT LEFT ON SIDE OF ROAD Ludwig’s parents said that while she had always done well in school, she was most passionate about playing and studying music. The 18-year-old was a talented guitarist and singer pursuing a future and career in music in the Music City. “She had so much potential and made such an impact on so many. And we just want people to remember her for the beautiful soul that she was and not the atrocity that took her life,” Thorn Ludwig said. CLICK TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP Matthew Ludwig said that until laws change, “this could happen to anyone.” “The individual that shot Jillian is not the only person that fell through this loophole in the system,” he said. “So there are others out there that can cause harm.”

San Francisco business owner roasts Newsom for cleaning up city for world leaders: 'He doesn't care' about us

A San Francisco small business owner shared frustration with the city government and California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom after a thorough cleanup was ordered ahead of this week’s APEC summit. The city has undertaken a significant effort to glam up streets ahead of a vital U.S.-China meeting, including the removal of homeless camps around the city.  “At first I thought… the media was making a way bigger deal out of this than it needed to be,” CrossFit Golden Gate gym owner Danielle Rabkin told “FOX & Friends First” Tuesday. “Of course, we needed to clean high-security zones. But then I realized they were cleaning outside those high-security zones. And then that Newsom clip surfaced, and it was abundantly obvious that they were cleaning because of optics and not security.” WH DISMISSES REPORTER ASKING IF BIDEN ‘EMBARRASSED’ ABOUT LIBERAL CITY’S ‘TOTAL MAKEOVER’ BEFORE XI VISIT Newsom admitted to the cleanup Friday at the unveiling of a new program to plant trees in urban neighborhoods. “I know folks are saying, ‘Oh they’re just cleaning up this place because all those fancy leaders are coming to town.’ That’s true, because it’s true — but it’s also true for months and months and months before APEC [Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit], we’ve been having conversations,” the governor said. “It is extremely frustrating,” Rabkin said of the remarks. “He doesn’t care about having clean streets for the constituents he serves. But at the snap of the fingers, things are clean. Just in time for this conference.” “If it wasn’t abundantly clear before, it is abundantly clear now that our leaders at the local and state level aren’t totally incapable of and incompetent, they just choose not to serve the people.” President Biden and Chinese President Xi Jingping will meet face-to-face in the city this week — the first since the two leaders met in Indonesia in November 2022. San Francisco Mayor London Breed said the conference could help the city with an anticipated $53 million injected into the economy, according to FOX affiliate KTVU, adding that “tourism is our business here in San Francisco.”  “It’s funny,” Gabkin said. “The city’s always gotten away with being really poorly run. But with work-from-home policies, people are starting to leave… the tax base is shrinking. Small business owners are the ones suffering. So it’s really difficult to see that things are getting cleaned up right as this conference is coming in and world leaders are about to come into the city.” CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP Gabkin, who has been operating her small business for over 11 years in the city, said the homeless crisis and drug epidemic has been squeezing residents for years. “People don’t have to be here anymore, and they don’t want to live in a place that doesn’t feel clean and safe,” she said. “We feel the pain tremendously. It’s no secret that stores are closing left and right. This is not a media ploy. This is the real truth on the streets.” For more Culture, Media, Education, Opinion, and channel coverage, visit foxnews.com/media. FOX News’ Peter Aitken contributed to this report.

Biden hands China big win with military deal, experts say: ‘Incredibly poor decision’

Biden hands China big win with military deal, experts say: 'Incredibly poor decision'

President Biden is set to strike a deal with China that would limit the use of artifical intelligence in nuclear weapons. Biden is to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in San Francisco, where the two leaders are expected to also sign an agreement to limit AI’s use in military applications, according to a report from Business Insider. According to the report, Biden and Xi will agree to limit AI use in the systems that control and deploy nuclear weapons as well as the technology’s use in autonomous weapon systems such as drones. US MILITARY NEEDS AI VEHICLES, WEAPON SYSTEMS TO BE ‘SUPERIOR’ GLOBAL FORCE: EXPERTS The deal comes as the two countries have frequently found themselves at odds, with tensions continuing to flare over issues that include China’s spying activities in the U.S. and its continued military buildup in the South China Sea. But the deal comes at the same time as many have warned about the growing implications of allowing unfettered AI use in combat, a new reality that has led to growing ethical concerns. Phil Siegel, the founder of the Center for Advanced Preparedness and Threat Response Simulation (CAPTRS), told Fox News Digital that such an agreement is “necessary,” though he argued that other major powers such as Russia should be involved in the pact as well. “I predict they will make a deal on AI-driven autonomous weapons on the battlefield should only be for reconnaissance and not fighting; otherwise, the world will become a very dangerous place,” Siegel said. “I think there is more to come, and it is necessary to keep us from devolving to continual war.” But Christopher Alexander, the chief analytics officer of Pioneer Development Group, questioned the need for such a deal, pointing out that the U.S. would be giving up a strategic advantage it currently holds over China. US, NOT CHINA, SHOULD TAKE LEAD ON AI “This is an incredibly poor decision,” Alexander told Fox News Digital. “To begin with, China lags behind the U.S. in AI capabilities; so the Biden administration just ceded a strategic advantage. Additionally, AI helps reduce stress to improve decision-making, which is crucial in preventing a poor decision to release nuclear weapons.” Both China and the U.S. have raced to integrate the use of AI into the military as the technology continues to rapidly advance, paving the way for applications that would be useful in combat. But both countries have also seemingly realized the danger in allowing AI’s unfettered use, with the two sides both being party to an agreement earlier this year that endorsed the responsible use of AI in the military. But Samuel Mangold-Lenett, a staff editor at The Federalist, questioned whether China could be depended upon to honor such an agreement, pointing to the country’s lack of adherence to the Paris Climate Agreement. “It is foolish to believe China will honor any agreement limiting the use of AI in nuclear weapons. Look at the Paris Climate Agreement: despite agreeing to reduce carbon emissions, China continued to be one of the world’s worst polluters. It similarly has no regard for human rights or intellectual property,” Mangold-Lenett told Fox News Digital. “Chinese leadership has no regard for agreements that could slow down its quest for destabilizing the world order and displacing the U.S. as hegemon. The U.S. should continue developing AI systems that ensure national security and advance our interests — our enemies will surely do the same.” The White House did not immediately respond to a Fox News request for comment.

On this day in history, November 15, 1956, Elvis makes big-screen debut in ‘Love Me Tender’

On this day in history, November 15, 1956, Elvis makes big-screen debut in 'Love Me Tender'

Elvis Presley, the king of rock ‘n’ roll, capped the most extraordinary breakout year in pop-culture history with the release of his first movie on this day in history, Nov. 15, 1956.  “Love Me Tender” — and Elvis the actor — garnered only tepid reviews.  But the film helped turn the groundbreaking recording star into a multimedia icon who is still to this day beloved around the world, 45 years after his death at age 42.  “Appraising Presley as an actor, he ain’t,” Variety magazine wrote of the movie at the time. ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY, NOVEMBER 14, 1776, BRITISH PRESS NAMES FAMOUS LONDONER BEN FRANKLIN LEADER OF REBELLION “Not that it makes much difference. There are four songs, and lotsa Presley wriggles thrown in for good measure.” “Love Me Tender” debuted amid great fanfare at the Paramount Theatre in Times Square in New York City.  Presley, just 21 at the time, starred as Clint Reno, a man caught in a love triangle with his Confederate veteran brother in the Civil War-era western. Elvis would go on to star in 30 more feature films.  “For a number of years he was one of Hollywood’s top box office draws and one of its highest-paid actors,” says the website of Graceland, Presley’s Memphis home. ‘A CHRISTMAS STORY’ HOUSE IN OHIO LISTED FOR SALE JUST IN TIME FOR CHRISTMAS: ‘DEFINITELY EXCITING’ “The first Elvis film, released in 1956, was followed by his two most critically acclaimed films, ‘Jailhouse Rock’ (1957) and ‘King Creole’ (1958), which have become classics of their era.” Presley exploded onto the American and then global pop-culture scene in 1956 in a glittering meteoric rise experienced by no other artist before or since. He released an incredible five songs to top the Billboard pop charts that year, with “Heartbreak Hotel,” “I Want You, I Need You, I Love You,” “Don’t Be Cruel,” “Hound Dog” and movie title tune “Love Me Tender.” Elvis spent nearly half of 1956 — 25 weeks — with a No. 1 Billboard song.  In an extraordinarily rare example of crossover appeal, “Don’t Be Cruel” and “Hound Dog” also topped both the country and R&B charts.  Elvis placed 12 other songs in the Billboard 100 that year, while performing 143 concerts in 79 cities, according to fan site Elvis History Blog.  ELVIS PRESLEY’S FINAL MONTHS WERE PLAGUED WITH PHYSICAL PAIN AS HE EMBARKED ON GRUELING TOUR, AUTHOR CLAIMS Elvis, one of the few stars in history commonly known only by his first name, also dazzled on the biggest TV programs in the nation for the first time that same year. “In 1956, Elvis Presley made his television debut with six appearances on ‘Stage Show,’ two appearances on ‘The Milton Berle Show,’ one on the ‘The Steve Allen Show,’ in which he sang one of his newly recorded songs (‘Hound Dog’) and performed in a comedy sketch before making two appearances on Allen’s competitor ’The Ed Sullivan Show,'” reports Graceland. But radio and recording is where the Elvis star shined brightest.  He’d released a handful of minor hits in the previous two years, “That’s All Right, Mama,” most notably in 1954. He burst onto the national scene with his eponymous first studio rock ‘n’ roll album “Elvis Presley” in March 1956.  It “went on to become the first rock and roll album to reach number one on national record sales charts, and RCA’s first million-dollar-earning pop album,” writes the National Museum of American History. Elvis in 1956 turned rock ‘n’ roll from an underground music form, performed largely by Black artists, into a major pop-culture phenomenon around the world.  CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR OUR LIFESTYLE NEWSLETTER Movie review site Rotten Tomatoes says in its Presley biography, “His success and magnetism inspired a host of future musicians, including Bob Dylan, John Lennon and others, to take their first steps toward careers in rock and roll.” For more Lifestyle articles, visit www.foxnews.com/lifestyle.

McCarthy foe calls alleged kidney-hit a ‘sad asterisk on his career’ amid raucous day in Congress

McCarthy foe calls alleged kidney-hit a 'sad asterisk on his career' amid raucous day in Congress

A Republican congressman who accused Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., of kidney-punching him in a Capitol hallway called the incident a “sad asterisk” on the ex-speaker’s career, saying it shows why he and seven other GOP members voted to oust him. McCarthy denied intentionally striking Rep. Tim Burchett, R-Tenn., telling reporters in a gaggle later Tuesday that if he truly punched Burchett, he would “be on the ground.” Burchett told FOX News that McCarthy has “spiral[ed] out of control” and blamed any alleged intent on the fact he was one of the eight Republicans who supported Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz’ motion to vacate the chair in October. “I would just encourage your viewers to look at the lady from NPR, Claudia [Grisales] — look at her Twitter account. She had a pretty accurate view of it and disclosed exactly what happened,” Burchett said. Burchett was standing in a hallway being interviewed by Grisales following a conference, when McCarthy allegedly brushed past him. MCCARTHY HIT WITH ETHICS COMPLAINT OVER ALLEGED SHOVE OF TN LAWMAKER Grisales claimed on X, formerly Twitter, that McCarthy “shoved” Burchett, who then “lunged towards” her.  “I thought it was a joke, it was not,” Grisales said, while reporting Burchett initially began to apologize for making contact with McCarthy before shouting, “‘Hey Kevin, why’d you walk behind me and elbow me in the back? You got any guts?'” Burchett then reportedly called the alleged strike a “chicken move.” McCarthy later responded, according to Forbes: “No, I did not elbow — no, I would not elbow — I would not hit him in a kidney.” Burchett quipped to “Jesse Watters Primetime” that Grisales, as a reporter for the left-wing public radio network, would not be one to rush to his defense politically — but appeared to do so in her tweets. Speaking about the gridlock in Congress, Burchett said he hopes the newly minted speaker, Rep. Mike Johnson, R-La., has better luck passing individualized spending bills than McCarthy over his months-long tenure. “[McCarthy] took off the entire month of August and then two weeks into September and backed us up against the wall, which is really by design. Pelosi did the same thing. Speakers always do it so they can pass a pork-filled budget, which we won’t have any hearings over and nobody will hear anything about,” he said. MCCARTHY ACCUSED OF SHOVING REPUBLICAN LAWMAKER “And that’s exactly what he did, and then he left this speaker, Speaker Johnson, an honorable man who wants to pass a budget with two weeks or less to do something with 30 years’ worth of bad history.” Earlier in the day, fireworks erupted in a Senate hearing chaired by Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont — in which Teamsters union boss Sean O’Brien was confronted by Sen. Markwayne Mullin, R-Okla., over a slew of tit-for-tat social media posts between the two — over how O’Brien claimed Mullin, who started and grew a small plumbing business, is a “greedy CEO.” Mullin read one tweet he considered was a challenge to a fight, in which O’Brien taunted, “any place, any time, cowboy.” “This is the time, this is the place,” Mullin told O’Brien in the hearing, adding, “if you want to run your mouth, we can be two consenting adults. We can finish it here.” O’Brien verbally agreed, and Mullin began to stand up and take off his wedding ring before Sanders shouted at them and banged his gavel. CLICK TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP “Stop! You’re a United States senator,” Sanders yelled. In another hearing, Rep. Jared Moskowitz, D-Fla., engaged Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., in a colloquy about shell companies, LLCs and the Biden family. When Moskowitz claimed Comer had engaged with his brother in a way similar to allegations against Hunter Biden, Comer denied the “bull—-” allegation and suggested Moskowitz looks like a “smurf.” For more Culture, Media, Education, Opinion and channel coverage, visit foxnews.com/media.

Watch: ‘Shameless’ Miami thief take off with woman’s patio furniture in broad daylight

Watch: 'Shameless' Miami thief take off with woman's patio furniture in broad daylight

A “shameless” man in Florida was caught on camera making off with a woman’s porch decorations in broad daylight and struggling to place the stolen items in his SUV. Aramairon Perez shared on Instagram footage from her Nest doorbell video camera of the thief in the act on November 9. “8.36 am at my house, a shameless person robbed me,” Perez wrote in Spanish. “I’m sharing it so that you are aware, you can no longer be calm.” The bizarre footage shows the thief, who was wearing all-black with a Miami Heat basketball hat along with a mask, pulling up to Perez’s residence in Miami, Florida in his black Ford Expedition. FLORIDA SERIAL CAR BURGLARY SUSPECT WITH ‘ALL GAS, NO BRAKES’ TATTOO NABBED AFTER HIGH-SPEED CRASH He quickly opens the trunk before jogging up to Perez’s porch-seemingly unaware that he was being video recorded. First, the thief is seen lugging a large wicker chair back to his SUV and is seen struggling to put it in. Eventually, he manages to place it in his vehicle. The thief does not stop there, returning to the Miami porch and retrieving an exotic-looking leafy plant from Perez’s porch. He is seen on the Nest doorbell video footage wrangling the heavy potted plant. After a couple of failed attempts, he is seen eventually sliding it next to the wicker chair. FLORIDA MAN SENTENCED TO PRISON FOR MURDER-FOR-HIRE PLOT AND MULTIPLE FRAUD SCHEMES The man begins to head back to the porch, then appears to change his mind and returns to close his bursting SUV and take off. The Miami Police Department did not immediately confirm if the thief was arrested following the incident.
