Georgia Senate Republicans are proposing a new map that would create two Black-majority voting districts, but would probably retain Republicans’ 33-23 edge in the General Assembly’s upper chamber, in an effort to fix a map a judge said illegally dilutes Black votes. The proposed districts, released Monday, would increase the number of Black majority districts by eliminating two white-majority districts currently represented by Democrats. State Sens. Jason Esteves and Elena Parent, both of Atlanta, would find themselves living in Black-majority districts if the redrawn map goes through. A special session on redrawing state legislative and congressional districts is scheduled to begin Wednesday after U.S. District Judge Steve Jones in October ordered Georgia to draw Black majorities in one additional congressional district, two additional state Senate districts, and five additional state House districts. JUDGE SAYS GEORGIA’S CONGRESSIONAL AND LEGISLATIVE DISTRICTS ARE DISCRIMINATORY AND MUST BE REDRAWN APPEALS COURT SAYS GEORGIA MAY ELECT UTILITY PANEL STATEWIDE, REJECTING A RULING FOR DISTRICT VOTING It’s unclear whether Jones would accept the map if it passes. He ordered two additional Black Senate districts in the southern part of metro Atlanta, finding 10 state Senate districts illegal under Section 2 of the federal Voting Rights Act. Monday’s Republican proposal left two of those districts untouched — a district in Clayton and Fayette counties, represented by Democrat Valencia Seay of Riverdale, and the district stretching across Fayette, Spalding, Pike and Lamar counties, represented by Republican Marty Harbin of Tyrone. Some other districts declared illegal saw changes that did little to affect their racial or partisan balance. By contrast, Republicans propose redrawing a number of Democratic-held districts in Fulton and Cobb counties the judge didn’t single out. Overall, it appears no current senators would be drawn into the same district under the plan. That’s important because under Georgia law, state legislators must have lived in their districts for a year before they are elected. Because 2024’s election is less than a year away, it’s too late for anyone to move to another district to run. Their drastically different districts could invite Democratic primary challenges to Parent and Esteves. Parent is the second-ranking Democrat in the Senate and Esteves is the treasurer of the state Democratic Party. Parent declined comment Monday, saying she would speak Tuesday when Democrats introduce their own proposal. That plan is unlikely to pass the majority Republican legislature, but could become part of legal argument over whether lawmakers’ proposed remedy meets the terms of Jones’ order. Ken Lawler, chair of Fair Districts GA, which seeks to reduce partisan gerrymandering, said that he thought the districts met Jones’ goal of creating additional Black majority districts. “With respect to complying, they get a pass,” Lawler said. However, he said Republicans shouldn’t change other districts to try to retain their current majority, saying those were like other mid-decade changes Georgia Republicans have undertaken in recent decades to pad their control. GEORGIA TO APPEAL CONGRESSIONAL, LEGISLATIVE REDISTRICTING ORDER No House or congressional plans were released Monday, although the House Committee on Reapportionment and Redistricting said it would hold a Wednesday hearing on a new House plan. A new Black-majority congressional district, combined with similar rulings in other Southern states, could help Democrats reclaim the U.S. House in 2024. New legislative districts could narrow Republican majorities in Georgia. It’s unclear if the GOP can legally prevent Democrats from gaining a congressional seat, along the lines of what they’re seeking to do in the state Senate. Jones wrote in his order that Georgia can’t fix its problems “by eliminating minority opportunity districts elsewhere.” The state has pledged to appeal Jones’ order. If the state later wins an appeal, Georgia could have new districts in 2024 and revert to current lines in 2026. Republicans control nine of Georgia’s 14 congressional seats and 102 of the 180 state House seats.

The Grand Ole Opry, the world’s longest running broadcast, debuted on WSM radio in Nashville on this day in history, Nov. 28, 1925.  “The showcase was originally named the Barn Dance, after a Chicago radio program called the National Barn Dance that had begun broadcasting the previous year,” according to History.com.  “Impressed by the popularity of the Chicago-based National Barn Dance, producers at WSM radio in Nashville decided to create their own version of the show to cater to southern audiences who could not receive the Chicago signal.” ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY, NOVEMBER 27, 1924, THE FIRST MACY’S THANKSGIVING DAY PARADE IS HELD IN NYC The Barn Dance was renamed the Grand Ole Opry two years later, courtesy of an unscripted moment of on-air inspiration by host George D. A man was arrested in Maryland on Monday for the deaths of a woman and a teenage girl who were found stabbed to death in Florida over the weekend.  Jean Pierre Ojeda Salazar, 25, was taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service, the Tampa Police Department said, Fox Tampa reported. He was found in Maryland a day after the double murder, authorities said.  FLORIDA MAN CONFESSES TO MURDERING BROTHER, KICKS DETECTIVE: ‘I JUST KILLED MY BROTHER’ On Sunday, officers responded to the 14000 block of Riveredge Drive and found a 14-year-old girl with multiple stab wounds. They also found the second victim, a 35-year-old woman, with similar injuries, according to TPD officials.  The woman was pronounced dead at the scene, the teen was taken to a hospital where she later died.  Salazar stabbed both victims after an argument with the woman, police said. He fled the apartment complex where the deaths occurred in a sedan, which was later found abandoned, authorities said.  He was arrested on suspicion of multiple charges, including first-degree and second-degree murder.  Salazar was taken to the Maryland County Correctional Facility and is awaiting extradition to Tampa.

“The View” co-host Sunny Hostin said Monday it was “unfortunate” people have “taken such sides” in the ongoing Israel-Palestinian conflict and took an implicit shot at the show for only showing footage of Jewish family reunifications. The ABC talk show opened Monday with footage of hostages who had been freed by Hamas, several of them young children, as well as a clip of President Biden discussing four-year-old Abigail’s ordeal, who was taken prisoner after her parents were murdered by the terrorist group. She and dozens of other hostages were freed after Israel released Palestinian prisoners accused of various criminal offenses during a temporary cease-fire. Hostin appeared irked with the show for only showing the tearful reunions of Jewish families. “I think that it’s unfortunate that people have taken such sides here because this is something that has been going on for decades, right?” she said. “And we did show the reunification of Jewish families, and I think that was really important, especially little Abigail. I’m a mother. I can’t imagine having your child taken from you and held hostage by a terrorist organization, but we – also, there were, you know, 76 Palestinians, including women and children, that were being held in Israel with no understanding of why they were being held, no administrative hearings. And so those reunifications are something that we should also be looking at and talking about.” WHOOPI GOLDBERG SURPRISES CO-HOST BY SAYING ‘WE DESERVE WHAT WE GET’ IF TRUMP RE-ELECTED She went on to say she watches Al Jazeera, BBC and other news outlets as part of getting her media from “everywhere,” while referencing the recent killings of Palestinian-Americans stateside and hoping for a two-state solution to the longstanding conflict. “There is media in Gaza because I’ve seen these videos… I think what’s really important is what happens after this pause because a cease-fire apparently is a bad word now,” she said. “So what happens after this humanitarian pause? Who is in charge? Who isn’t in charge? Are we going to continue seeing this devastation in Gaza? Are we going to continue seeing these three Palestinian kids going — college kids, one who knows my son’s friend, OK? When is that going to stop? When are we going to really meet at the table and understand that all lives in this situation are being affected, and we must have a two-state solution? We must have that.” Co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin said Hostin rightfully called Hamas a terrorist organization, but she chided Hostin’s remarks about not wanting to take sides. “I do think that you can take sides,” she said. “You can support the innocent Palestinian people and the innocent Israelis caught in the crossfire, but you can take a fundamental, as we all have at this table, stance against Hamas, a terrorist group that made this happen on October 7.” Hostin, one of the show’s several left-wing hosts, has been consistently critical of Israel and its tactics since the conflict began, at one point accusing it of war crimes. Griffin noted “we were at a cease-fire” before October 7, when Hamas terrorists stormed into southern Israel and killed 1,200 people and took hundreds of hostages. Israel has since responded with a bombardment of Gaza that has forced Hamas to negotiate the temporary cease-fire, for which it has received back Palestinian prisoners accused by Israel of various crimes. The Times of Israel reported the released convicts, “all women or young men, had all been charged with or convicted of terror-related crimes, including attempted murder.” “The View” didn’t reply to a request for comment.

Ireland’s government is newly pushing an anti-hate speech law in the wake of riots that came in response to the stabbing of a woman and three children outside a primary school in Dublin. “Language being proposed as law in Ireland means this could literally happen to you for having a meme on your phone,” Elon Musk wrote on X, responding to another user who posted a gif of a police raid. Critics are widely slamming the legislation over freedom of speech concerns.  Ireland was trending on Musk’s X Monday, as text circulated of the bill targeting any “offense of preparing or possessing material likely to incite violence or hatred against persons on account of their protected characteristics.”  Protected characteristics listed in the bill include national or ethnic origin, as well as “transgender and a gender other than those of male and female.”  According to many users, the legislation was kept intentionally vague and suggests people could be jailed for having certain memes saved to their phones or for merely being found in possession of books or videos deemed politically offensive.  Nate Hochman, a staff writer for National Review, said the bill represents, “arguably the most radical legislation of its kind we’ve seen in the West.”  IRISH POLITICIAN BOASTS HATE SPEECH BILL WILL ‘RESTRICT FREEDOM’ TO PROTECT TRANS PEOPLE FROM ‘DISCOMFORT’ In a speech Friday, Irish Prime Minister (Taoiseach) Leo Varadkar vowed to “modernize laws against hatred” in the coming weeks after several dozen people were arrested in Dublin riots Thursday night.  “I think it’s now very obvious to anyone who might have doubted us that our incitement hatred legislation is just not up to date,” Varadkar said. “It’s not up to date for the social media age, and we need that legislation through and we need it through in a matter of weeks. Because it’s not just the platforms who have a responsibility here, and they do. There’s also the individuals who post messages and images online that stir up hatred and violence, and we need to be able to use laws to go after them individually as well.”  Critics say the legislation may also lead to the imprisonment of Irish people wary of mass migration. The bill states, “Racism and xenophobia are direct violations of the principles of liberty, democracy, respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms and the rule of law, principles upon which the European Union is founded and which are common to the Member States.” One of the punishable crimes relating to “xenophobia” is merely “the commission of an act referred to in point (a) by public dissemination or distribution of tracts, pictures or other material,” which can roughly apply to political pamphlets criticizing the influx of immigrants and refugees in Ireland. In June, Irish Green Party Sen. Pauline O’Reilly was panned for a speech defending the bill in which she admitted, “We are restricting freedom, but we’re doing it for the common good.”  As for the Dublin demonstrations, Garda [Police] Commissioner Drew Harris said 34 people had been arrested as of Thursday evening and 13 shops had been significantly damaged or subject to looting, 11 garda vehicles destroyed through arson, and three public transportation buses were destroyed by a “riotous mob.”  IRISH CITIZENS COULD SOON BE JAILED FOR ‘POSSESSING MATERIAL LIKELY TO INCITE VIOLENCE OR HATRED’ “These are scenes not seen in decades, but what is clear is people have been radicalized through social media over the Internet, and so you have a terrible event – and I don’t want to lose focus on the terrible event in terms of the assault, the dreadful assault on the schoolchildren and their teacher because that’s a full investigation that’s ongoing. There’s also a full investigation with respect to the disorder, and we have literally thousands of hours now of CCTV to trawl through.” The stabbing unfolded around 1 p.m. local time Thursday outside Gaelscoil Coláiste Mhuire, a primary school in Parnell Square in Dublin’s city center. A woman and three children were hurt.  The Irish Independent identified the suspect as an Algerian man in his 50s and said he remained hospitalized in a coma as of Monday.  The woman, a caretaker at the school, and a 5-year-old girl remain hospitalized Monday with serious injuries, according to the newspaper, while the other two children – a 6-year-old girl and a 5-year-old boy – were released from the hospital over the weekend.  The knife attack prompted riots from hundreds of demonstrators opposing the dramatic rise of asylum seekers and migrants accommodated by the Irish government from Ukraine and outside of Europe while the country battles an affordable housing shortage and a cost-of-living crisis.

Having a cold or flu can cause a nagging cough, chills and fever — but what’s the best way to treat these viruses? Many options can alleviate cold and flu symptoms, including over-the-counter (OTC) and prescription medications — and it’s important to know the difference. “A prescription medication requires authorization from a health care provider, and an over-the-counter medication allows you to self-treat conditions such as colds, allergies, headaches and joint pain,” Dr. Elaena Quattrocchi, a pharmacist and associate professor in the Division of Pharmacy Practice at Long Island University in Brooklyn, New York, told Fox News Digital. HERE’S HOW TO PREVENT COLD AND FLU FROM SPREADING THROUGHOUT YOUR HOUSEHOLD “You can buy OTC medications in a pharmacy, but also in supermarkets and other stores,” she said. Prescription medications should only be taken if given to a patient by a health care professional, Quattrocchi advised.  Some medications are available in both a prescription and an OTC version, varying by size of the doses and length of time they’re taken. “Prescription medications are better for treating the flu, since there are antiviral agents that can be prescribed,” the pharmacist told Fox News Digital. “The medications must be given in a timely fashion or they will not work.” The majority of supplements for cold and flu “lack evidence for efficacy,” Quattrocchi noted. If cold symptoms persist or if a person seems to get better and then gets worse, this could be a sign of an underlying infection that requires medical attention, she noted. 10 HEALTHY HABITS TO PRACTICE EVERY DAY THAT TAKE LESS THAN 10 MINUTES EACH “The only tried-and-tested treatments for influenza are the FDA-approved antivirals,” said Dr. Aaron E. Glatt, chair of the department of medicine and chief of infectious diseases at Mount Sinai South Nassau in Long Island, New York. “Certainly, they are not anywhere near perfect, and should be used as appropriate under a physician’s guidance.” When it comes to symptom relief, Glatt said, “Over-the-counter remedies will at best provide improvement a couple of hours earlier, but could also have potential toxicities and side effects that may be worse than those few hours of symptom relief.” Many medications for viral infections target symptom control, said Dr. Frederick Davis, the associate chair of emergency medicine at Northwell Health Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park, New York. “Some prescription medications might target a specific virus — like Paxlovid for COVID or Tamiflu in cases of flu,” he said.  10 NATURAL TREATMENTS THAT DOCTORS RECOMMEND FOR THE COLD AND FLU “These prescription drugs might reduce the severity or duration of symptoms.” OTC medications do have some side effects — and just because a drug is available without a prescription doesn’t mean it is safe or appropriate for every individual, Davis and Glatt cautioned. Pseudoephedrine, an ingredient found in many OTC medications, is an effective decongestant but can produce some side effects for people, such as difficulty sleeping, dizziness and nervousness, Davis pointed out. COLD AND FLU SEASON IS COMING: KNOW THE WARNING SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS NOW “It can also increase blood pressure, which can be a concern for those who already have elevated blood pressure,” he said. The drug is now sold behind the pharmacy counter because of its use by some to make methamphetamines from it, Davis noted. Certain nasal decongestant sprays, like Afrin, can relieve sinus and nasal congestion, but cannot be used for more than three days because they can cause rebound congestion. Another OTC medication called phenylephrine was “taken off the shelf because it was deemed ineffective,” said Davis. It is important that individuals tell their health care provider and pharmacist about any OTC medications they are taking or plan to take, as some may be contraindicated if a person has certain underlying medical conditions, Quattrocchi told Fox News Digital. “Some OTC medications can interact with prescription medications,” she added. “Some vitamins and supplements can interact as well.” The pharmacist also warned about giving OTC medications to children.  COLD, FLU, COVID-19 AND RSV: HOW TO IDENTIFY THE DIFFERING SYMPTOMS AND STAY SAFE “OTC medications should never be given to children without consulting their pediatricians,” she told Fox News Digital.  “The FDA doesn’t recommend OTC medications for cough and cold symptoms in children younger than 2 years of age because they can cause serious side effects.”  Quattrocchi also warned parents to never give a child any medication that is intended for an adult. “For children, never use aspirin-containing products to treat a fever,” she said. “Do not use honey in children under 12 months old, as it can contain bacteria that can cause botulism.” The pharmacist also emphasized the importance of reading labels carefully, as certain types of medications have an adult version and a baby version. SICK WITH A COLD OR FLU? HERE’S HOW TO KNOW IF YOU CAN STILL EXERCISE: ‘USE THE NECK CHECK’ When deciding between an OTC and prescription medication, choosing the latter may help cut costs in some cases. “OTC drugs may be more expensive than prescription medications that are covered under a patient’s health plan,” Quattrocchi said. The Baltimore Ravens held off the Los Angeles Chargers in a surprisingly low-scoring game, 20-10, to improve to 9-3 on the season.  The Chargers, losers of three straight, are now 4-7 on the year.  A rare Justin Tucker missed field goal with 3:02 left in the fourth quarter gave Justin Herbert and the Chargers’ offense life. However, they’ve been in this position before this season, and unfortunately, it hasn’t worked out in their favor much.  CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM The Chargers’ offense couldn’t generate more than 10 yards of offense with the ball in prime position at the Ravens’ 46-yard on third-and-6. But they couldn’t pick up the necessary yardage for a first down, turning it over to the Ravens.  To make matters worse, rookie receiver Zay Flowers scored his second touchdown of the game, a 37-yard run to make it a 20-10 game.  Flowers was the only Raven to find the end zone, scoring the game’s first touchdown of the game on a play-action pass from Lamar Jackson. It was Keaton Mitchell leading the way with 64 yards on nine carries, though Lamar Jackson (39), Justice Hill (31) and Gus Edwards (26) contributed as well.  For the Chargers, turnovers were a major problem all game long.  The team’s first drive went 54 yards in 12 plays resulting in a field goal. Things might’ve turned out different for Los Angeles if they could’ve come away with points on that drive, as Gerald Everett found the end zone to make it 13-10 midway through the fourth quarter.  Instead, the Chargers fell to one of the best defenses in the NFL, and remain on the outside looking into the AFC playoff race.  Allen finished as Herbert’s top target with 106 yards on 14 catches, while Ekeler had 32 yards receiving, though only 32 yards rushing.  The Ravens will head to their bye week sitting in firm position in the AFC North lead, while preparing for the Los Angeles Rams at home on Dec. 10.  Meanwhile, the Chargers head to New England for their next matchup against the reeling Patriots.

Three students of Palestinian descent were shot and injured while attending a Thanksgiving holiday gathering near the University of Vermont on Saturday evening, according to police.  Burlington Police Chief Jon Murad said the shooting occurred just before 6:30 p.m. Saturday and police are looking for the shooter.  Two of the men are in stable condition and the other suffered “much more serious injuries,” Murad said Sunday.  “Without speaking, he discharged at least four rounds from the pistol and is believed to have fled,” Murad said. “All three victims were struck, two in their torsos and one in the lower extremities.” The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) identified the three men as Hisham Awartani of Brown University, Kinnan Abdalhamid of Haverford College, and Tahseen Ahmed of Trinity College. The three men are all of Palestinian descent. Two are U.S. citizens and one is a legal resident. The trio was visiting a home of one of the victim’s relatives and were walking when they were confronted by a white man with a handgun, police said. At the time, two of the men were wearing the black-and-white Palestinian keffiyeh scarves. Murad said there is no additional information to suggest the suspect’s motive, but acknowledged the charged atmosphere against the backdrop of the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas.  “My deepest condolences go out to the victims and their families,” Murad said in a news release. “In this charged moment, no one can look at this incident and not suspect that it may have been a hate-motivated crime. And I have already been in touch with federal investigatory and prosecutorial partners to prepare for that if it’s proven.” FORMER OBAMA ADMINISTRATION OFFICIAL CHARGED WITH HATE CRIME AFTER CONFRONTATION WITH NYC FOOD CART VENDOR He added, “The fact is that we don’t yet know as much as we want to right now. But I urge the public to avoid making conclusions based on statements from uninvolved parties who know even less.” The ADC said a man shouted and harassed the victims, who were conversing in Arabic, then proceeded to shoot them. The FBI said it is aware of the shootings. “If, in the course of the local investigation, information comes to light of a potential federal violation, the FBI is prepared to investigate,” Sarah Ruane, an FBI spokesperson based in Albany, New York, said in a statement. The White House said that President Joe Biden was briefed on the shooting and will continue to receive updates as law enforcement gathers more information. The Council on American-Islamic Relations said it was offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible for the shooting. Sen. Bernie Sanders, the Vermont Independent, denounced the attack, calling it “shocking and deeply upsetting.”  “Hate has no place here, or anywhere. I look forward to a full investigation,” Sanders said in a statement. “My thoughts are with them and their families.” Burlington Mayor Miro Weinberger said he had been in communication with the family of one of the victims and the city’s Muslim community, “offering the city’s support and commitment to justice in this painful time.”  The University of Vermont said it was saddened by reports of the shooting.  “In this period of unrest in other regions of the world, we encourage you to pay close attention to the sources and authenticity of information you receive about this incident,” the university said in a statement to the community. “We ask you to do your part in helping to avoid speculation as the investigation progresses.”  Vermont Governor Phil Scott called the shooting a tragedy and wished for a speedy recovery.  “My thoughts are with them and their families. I have offered the State’s full support to the Mayor and Burlington Police Chief as this senseless crime is investigated and in support of the Palestinian and broader Burlington community. Our federal partners also stand ready to assist.”  Demonstrations have been widespread and tensions are escalating in the United States as the death toll rises in the Israel-Hamas war. A fragile cease-fire between Israel and Hamas was back on track Sunday as the militants freed more hostages in a third set of releases under a four-day cease-fire deal.

Univision anchor Jorge Ramos criticized the network in a column published Saturday about their interview with former President Donald Trump, saying that journalists must continue to question those in power. Ramos, an anchor at Univision and a frequent critic of the former president, weighed in on the mounting criticism of the network after its recent interview with Trump.  “That’s why it is very dangerous to fail to confront Trump. And that’s why it is our moral obligation to confront him every time there’s a journalistic opportunity to do it. But I understand that not everyone agrees, and I open the debate here,” he continued.  “I believe we must question and confront Trump for democracy, for the rights of immigrants and, simply, for good journalism,” he wrote. Ramos argued the journalists shouldn’t take sides, and noted that the media was obligated to “broadcast the messages” of 2024 presidential candidates.  “Of course we should not take sides, and we are obliged to broadcast the messages of all candidates in the 2024 presidential election. But at the same time, we cannot surrender our responsibility to ask hard and precise questions. That’s what journalism is for. These journalistic principles apply to everyone,” he wrote.

Do these three digits still matter today?  Read below to find out.  The area code is the first three digits in a phone number. These three digits correlate to a specific geographic area.  The geographic location identified by an area code can be one city or multiple towns. All area codes are three digits. A phone number is split into four different sections. The first is the country code. This is the very first digit in a number used when making an international call.  For the United States and Canada, the country code is +1.  Next is the three-digit area code. Following that are the three-digit telephone prefix and the last four digits, called the line number.  Before area codes, human operators connected calls. Now there are hundreds of different area codes.  The number 201 was the first area code — and it was issued in New Jersey in 1951.  The 201 area code no longer covers all of New Jersey as it once did, but it still remains in parts of the state, including Jersey City, Union City and Hoboken.  Area codes aren’t as vital as they once were.  For many, they have become part of an individual’s “identity” now more than anything else.  This is because cellphones are how most people communicate, and landline phones have become a thing of the past.  When people move to a location with a different area code, they often keep their old number to avoid the hassle of a number switch. So, a person’s area code doesn’t necessarily correspond with where a call is placed.  For some, like businesses, area codes are important to establish credibility when making calls. Katharine McPhee and David Foster admitted that they don’t always see eye to eye when it comes to raising their two-year-old son Rennie due to their age gap. The 39-year-old singer and the 74-year-old composer, who married in 2019, told People magazine that they sometimes disagree over their approaches to parenting Rennie because they are from different generations. “I want to start disciplining [Rennie] and Kat’s not really down with that,” Foster said during a joint interview with McPhee. “No, that’s not true,” McPhee told the outlet. “I just want to discipline in my own way.” KATHARINE MCPHEE AND DAVID FOSTER RAISING THEIR SON NOT TO BE AN ‘A-HOLE’ “There’s the more old-fashioned way of disciplining which involves time-outs and things like that,” the “American Idol” alum explained. “My take is that you can have more mindful parenting opposed to just assuming that a two or three-year-old can have time alone to reflect on what they’ve done poorly.” She continued, “I think the more new way of parenting is understanding that with a child, there’s only so much that they can intellectually understand. Saying ‘That was really bad, that was really, really bad,’ gets into a shaming thing.
