On this day in history, November 18, 1883, North American railroads create time zones, reshape global life

On this day in history, November 18, 1883, North American railroads create time zones, reshape global life

American and Canadian railroads enacted time zones — a concept that schedules all aspects of life today — on this day in history, Nov. 18, 1883.  The rail industry’s creation of time zones was a brazen attempt to bend time to its will.  It brought sanity to a sprawling patchwork system of local timekeeping based on the ancient method of following the sun, the system used since human time began. ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY, NOVEMBER 17 1871, NATIONAL RIFLE ASSOCIATION FOUNDED BY CIVIL WAR VETERAN UNION OFFICERS “Back in the early 1800s, the sun served as the official ‘clock’ in the U.S., and time was based on each city’s own solar noon, or the point when the sun is highest in the sky,” Union Pacific railroad writes in its history of time zones.  “This timekeeping method resulted in the creation of more than 300 local time zones across the country — not to mention disparity in local time depending on your location. So, for example, while it could be 12:09 p.m. in New York, it could also be 12:17 p.m. in Chicago.” The system that railroads pioneered did not become federal law until the passage of the Standard Time Act on March 19, 1918, amid World War I.  With an estimated 100,000 Americans alive today over the age of 100, tens of thousands of U.S. citizens still alive now were born into a world without uniform time.  Charles F. Dowd, an educator at what’s now Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, New York, first proposed the concept of time zones across the U.S. in 1870.  WINNER OF HERO DOG 2022: AMERICAN HUMAN SOCIETY CROWNS PUP WHO WENT FROM ‘TRASY TO TREASURE’ “Dowd’s plan divided the country into four time zones. He used the 75th meridian, which runs through New York State, as the base for his Eastern Standard Time,” explains the Madison Historical Society from the Connecticut hometown of the time pioneer.  “He then assigned three cross-country meridians: Central Standard (90th); Mountain Standard (105th); Pacific Standard (120th). Each zone time was set one hour apart.” Dowd slowly built support for his plan from academics. But the fractured railroad industry, with hundreds of companies competing for traffic and dollars, proved harder to harness. PLANES, TRAINS AND AUTOMOBILES: BIDEN ADMINISTRATION IS A HUB OF TRANSPORTATION WOES He found an influential ally in William F. Allen, a railroad engineer and editor of the “Traveler’s Official Railway Guide.” “With his helpful modifications — and Dowd’s continual work — Allen convinced railroad officials to adopt (time zones),” the Madison Historical Society explains.  “On November 18, 1883, Allen was on hand at the Western Union Telegraph System building in New York City to witness the plan’s implementation. Room 148 contained the company’s regulator clock. At 9 a.m., the clock was stopped for precisely three minutes and 58:38 seconds. The clock was then restarted, and Eastern Standard Time was born.” The concept of time zones quickly spread around the world. CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR OUR LIFESTYLE NEWSLETTER “The following year a conference was held in New York City to determine the location of the prime meridian, which refers to zero degrees longitude,” reports the website of California cartographer GeoJango Maps.  “It was decided that Greenwich, England, would act as the Earth’s prime meridian and that the 24 time zones would be based off … this location.” The four continental North American time zones used today — Eastern, Central, Mountain, Pacific — look substantially similar to those envisioned by Dowd in the 1870s.  The time zone concept, as clean as it may appear, creates chaos in one isolated Pacific Ocean island nation. Kiribati sprawls across about 1.4 million square miles of ocean. The World War II Battle of Tarawa, pitting United States Marines against entrenched Japanese defenders, took place in what’s now Kiribati. The nation straddles both the International Date Line and the equator. So it can be Friday and Saturday in Kiribati — and both summer and winter — all at the same time. The nation created its own unilateral time zones, bucking the international standard, on Dec. 31, 1994, to solve the problem. “These rarest of time zones were established by Kiribati,” writes watchmaker TAG Heuer, “for the purpose of removing certain absurdities from the daily lives of its citizens.” “Today, the U.S Department of Transportation oversees the nation’s time zones and the uniform observance of Daylight Saving Time,” writes Union Pacific, “including exercising the authority that allows a state to change its official time zone.” For more Lifestyle articles, visit www.foxnews.com/lifestyle.

Bill Maher says Dems’ last-minute San Fran clean-up for Xi is a sign that ‘Trump is winning’ in 2024

Bill Maher says Dems' last-minute San Fran clean-up for Xi is a sign that 'Trump is winning' in 2024

“Real Time” host Bill Maher connected the dots between the Democrats’ abrupt clean-up of San Francisco ahead of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit and former President Donald Trump’s potential election victory in 2024. This week, San Francisco hosted the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) conference where world leaders and business giants hobnobbed and President Biden had a one-on-one meeting with Xi. But after years of deterioration in the Golden City, most notably the homelessness plaguing its streets, Democrats on a local and state level rolled out the red carpet for the Chinese leader by clearing the sidewalks. BILL MAHER SCOLDS OBAMA’S ‘MORAL EQUIVALENCY’ ON ISRAEL-HAMAS: HE ‘DISAPPOINTED ME’ “I want to try a theory out on you why Trump is killing it — not just within the party, but he’s beating Biden heavily too,” Maher kicked off the panel discussion on Friday. “Because Xi, President Xi of China, came to our state this week and met with Biden up in San Francisco, and they had a little summit.” “And they did something very interesting in San Francisco. I mean, I have done many, many jokes as many comedians have about stepping and poop in San Francisco and, you know, it’s a city that needs to be put under control — so they did! Because Xi was coming! Put aside the fact that you only clean up with company coming over?” Maher quipped. “OK, so they cleaned it up, they rinse off the street, the homeless, you know, God forbid the guy who sends us the fentanyl sees somebody on fentanyl.” “This, to me, is why Trump is winning, because he talks about, ‘I’m going to open up the mental hospitals.’ Again, I’m not saying these are necessarily a good solution,” Maher continued. “When he talks, ‘I’m gonna put people in camps, the immigrants,’ all this kind of stuff, and people just see a place — a country, especially in the cities that look out-of-control. And the fact that the Democrats could control it for three days, how about making it permanent?” BILL MAHER PUMMELS LEFTWING ANTISEMITISM AMID ISRAEL-HAMAS WAR: ‘YOU’RE THE ONES WITH THE TIKI TORCHES NOW!’ Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom, who has received a ton of presidential buzz as an alternative to the embattled Biden, admitted the only reason why public officials waited until APEC to clean up San Francisco was to impress world leaders like Xi.  “I know folks are saying, ‘Oh, they’re just cleaning up this place because all those fancy leaders are coming to town.’ That’s true, because it’s true,” Newsom said during a press conference last week, which received intense backlash on social media.  MAHER HITS NEWSOM, WHITMER FOR RUNNING ‘SHADOW’ 2024 CAMPAIGNS, CREDITS DEAN PHILLIPS FOR CHALLENGING BIDEN The liberal comedian has been sounding the alarm that Trump will win the presidency in 2024, repeatedly urging Biden, whose 81st birthday is Nov. 20, to step aside and allow a more youthful Democrat to take the baton. He’s been comparing Biden to the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who famously refused to step down during the Obama presidency and was later replaced by Trump appointee Justice Amy Coney Barrett, declaring the aging incumbent “Ruth Bader Biden.” For more Culture, Media, Education, Opinion and channel coverage, visit foxnews.com/media.

LSU’s Angel Reese not with team after being benched earlier in week

LSU's Angel Reese not with team after being benched earlier in week

Just three days after being benched in the second half, Angel Reese was not with LSU during their win over Southeastern Louisiana on Friday. Reese did not play the final 20 minutes of the reigning champs’ game against Kent State, which was a 109-79 victory. She had 11 points and five rebounds in 13 minutes. Head coach Kim Mulkey characterized Tuesday’s move as a “coach’s decision” and did not elaborate, and after Friday’s game, she remained bleak on the subject. CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM “Angel was not in uniform. Angel is a part of this basketball team, and we hope she’s back with the team soon. I’m not gonna answer any more than that,” she said. Reese had started LSU’s first four games, during which the Tigers went 3-1, and averaged 17 points and 10.3 rebounds during those games. OutKick reported earlier this week that there was a possibility that Reese had been suspended, but LSU has not said so. OutKick contacted Reese’s agent Jeanine Ogbonnaya, so said she didn’t “have much information.” Mothers of members on the team have recently feuded, including Reese’s and Flau’jae Johnson’s. ANGEL REESE MAY HAVE BEEN SUSPENDED AFTER BENCHING, AND SOCIAL MEDIA DRAMA Reese’s mother, Angel Webb Reese, criticized Johnson for poor word usage on Instagram. “You definitely know about grammar errors when your daughter got a 2.0-or-less grade point average,” Johnson’s mother, Kia Brooks, responded. “Stop being petty, fake and hateful, and take responsibility for you and your daughter’s actions.” Reese, nicknamed the “Bayou Barbie” and known for her eyelash extensions and pink finger nails, led LSU to its first national title in women’s basketball last season. She also has parlayed her popularity into name, image, and likeness endorsements valued at more than $1 million, making her one of the top-earning female college athletes.  The junior garnered criticism when she pointed to her ring finger and did the “you can’t see me” celebration in front of Iowa’s Caitlin Clark in the closing seconds of the national title game. Clark previously did the taunt and said she had no issues with what Reese did. Reese led the Southeastern Conference in both scoring (23 points per game) and rebounding (15.4 per game) last season, becoming just the fourth player to lead the league in both categories. Her 34 double-doubles that season set an NCAA record and her 23 consecutive double-doubles to begin last season broke Sylvia Fowles’ previous LSU record of 19. SEAN HANNITY: Democrats are running scared

SEAN HANNITY: Democrats are running scared

FOX News host Sean Hannity calls out the Biden family’s foreign business dealings and says Democrats are “running scared” on “Hannity.”  SEAN HANNITY: The 2024 election year is less than a year away. Democrats — they are running scared, and in all likelihood, 80-year-old Joe Biden will be the party’s nominee. Democrats then will be forced to face a pretty uncomfortable truth, and that is that Joe has massive problems, and not just his declining physical and cognitive health or his vast policy failures.   HUNDREDS OF PRO-PALESTINIAN PROTESTERS STORM UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN ADMINISTRATIVE BUILDING  Tonight, the corruption claims against the president and his family — they are very, very real. Multiple House and Senate investigations have already detailed what is an extensive money trail, all exposing the flow of foreign cash right into Biden family bank accounts. Now, according to multiple witnesses and whistleblowers, emails and texts, the Bidens were selling access and influence to Joe Biden.  According to his own son, Hunter, the Big Guy — his father — was taking a cut. Now, of course we knew about this apparent corruption well before the 2020 election. Now, you know what? The left, the media mob, they can no longer censor the truth. Desantis, Haley, Ramaswamy, sitting side-by-side, get personal during ‘family discussion’ in Iowa

Desantis, Haley, Ramaswamy, sitting side-by-side, get personal during 'family discussion' in Iowa

DES MOINES, IOWA – They’ve traded fire from behind podiums on the Republican presidential debate stage. But White House rivals Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, former ambassador and former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, and biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy sat down together on Friday around the same table for a very different discussion in front of a large crowd of social conservative voters in Iowa, the state whose caucuses kick off the 2024 GOP presidential nominating calendar. All three candidates shared personal and at times emotional stories at a presidential Thanksgiving forum hosted by The Family Leader, a politically active and influential social conservative group in a state where evangelical voters play an outsized role in Republican politics. And each of the candidates spotlighted the difficulties they endured in having children as they showcased their opposition to legalized abortion. COULD THIS IOWA EVANGELICAL LEADER’S ENDORSEMENT PUT DENT IN TRUMP’S COMMANDING LEAD? “I actually haven’t shared this story before,” Ramaswamy said as he described his wife Apoorva’s first pregnancy.  “About three and a half months in… one day she woke up, she was bleeding. She had a miscarriage. We lost our first child,” Ramaswamy shared. Moments later, he signaled for his young son to join him on stage. DeSantis also noted his wife Casey’s miscarriage, and shared publicly for the first time how the two of them prayed for a child during a trip to Israel soon after their marriage. TRUMP, DESANTIS OR HALEY — WHO BENEFITS AS TIM SCOTT DROPS OUT OF THE RACE? “We got back to the United States, and a little time later, we got pregnant,” DeSantis continued. “But unfortunately, we lost that first baby.” Haley also discussed the difficulties she had in getting pregnant. And Haley doubled down on comments on her stance on abortion that she made last week at the third Republican presidential debate, in which she urged Americans to find consensus when it comes to limiting abortions. Family Leader president and CEO Bob Vander Plaats noted that Haley’s debate comments sounded “pro-choice” to some evangelicals and asked the presidential candidate to “assure them why that’s not a pro-choice answer.” Haley reiterated that she is “unapologetically pro-life” and emphasized that “our overall goal is how do we save as many babies as possible and support as many moms as we can.”  “I think you can look at my entire record as governor. I fought for life whether it was a pain-capable bill, whether it was making sure that women had to wait to see an ultrasound before they made a decision,” said Haley said as she pointed to her two-terms steering South Carolina. And Haley, who served as ambassador to the United Nations during former President Donald Trump’s administration, touted that “they said that I was the most pro-life ambassador they had ever had represent the U.S. at the United Nations because we did everything we could to make sure our taxpayer dollars never went towards anything that would take that life away or abortion.” When Vander Plaats pressed Haley on whether she would have signed a six-week abortion bill into law when she was governor,” she quickly answered “Yes. Whatever the people decide, you should do.” “I think it’s right to be in the hands of the people. I think that the people decided this was put in the states; that’s where it should be. Everybody can give their voice to it.”  WITH NINE WEEKS TO GO UNTIL THE FIRST VOTES IN THE GOP PRESIDENTIAL NOMINATION RACE, THIS CANDIDATE REMAINS IN THE DRIVER’S SEAT Nicole Schlinger, a longtime Iowa-based strategist with close ties to evangelicals, told Fox News that “this was the answer that I think Iowans were waiting for from Amb. Haley on life issues… I think that was very positive.” “Gov. DeSantis really came alive during the second half of this forum,” added Schlinger, who’s neutral in the GOP presidential nomination race. “This was a very pro-DeSantis crowd. He got the biggest applause.” While Haley and DeSantis have repeatedly clashed in recent weeks as they battle for second place in the polls behind Trump, who remains the commanding front-runner for the GOP presidential nomination, there were no fireworks on Friday.  And the recent acrimony between Haley and Ramaswamy was also not evident at the forum. “I don’t want to know what is bad about the other person,” Vander Plaats, who moderated the forum, said as he explained the ground rules. “I want to have an adult conversation about the future of this country.” Trump, who was invited to the forum, declined to attend. It was the second major presidential cattle call hosted by the Family Leader that Trump skipped this year. The former president will return to Iowa on Saturday, to headline a rally.  The forum was briefly interrupted by a climate protester, who shouted, “Repent! Repent!”  “How can you guys talk about being pro-life when our children’s future is on fire? ” the protester said before being escorted out of the hotel ballroom in downtown Des Moines where the event was held. Mexico’s president praises Biden for not building border walls

Mexico's president praises Biden for not building border walls

Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador on Friday praised President Biden for being the “first president in the United States in recent times who has not built walls.” López Obrador made the remark while meeting with Biden in San Francisco, adding that “we wish to assist the people in their countries of origin when they are forced to migrate.”  “I would like to also take this opportunity to greet our paisanos, the Mexican migrants who are living and making a life and working in the United States,” he continued. “Around 40 million people have made the United States their second home, their second country, and I would also like to inform those who may not be aware of this that in recent years there are many American citizens who are moving to Mexico to stay there or to live in Mexico.” “So welcome, because we are brotherly countries,” López Obrador added.  BIDEN ADMINISTRATION APPROVES $950 MILLION IN CONTRACTS FOR BORDER WALL REPAIR, UPGRADES  Biden said while sitting next to Mexico’s president, “We’re working side by side to combat arms trafficking, to tackle organized crime and to address the opioid epidemic, including fentanyl.”  The meeting comes two weeks after Fox News Digital reported that the Biden administration approved $950 million in contracts to repair and upgrade part of existing border wall construction in Arizona, California and Texas, using money from Trump-era congressional appropriations.  NEWS PHOTOGRAPHER SHOT DEAD IN CARTEL-DOMINATED MEXICAN BORDER HUB  In court documents, first reported by the New York Post, the Department of Homeland Security said that Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has awarded contracts for repair work and “system attribute installation” in the San Diego, El Centro, El Paso and Tucson Sectors.  Remediation work includes closing gaps, installing gates and improving roads and drainage systems. “System attribute installation” includes putting in cameras, roads and detection technology to enhance the border wall. Other contracts include installing anti-climb features on the wall in San Diego, IT support and environmental planning. None of the money was awarded for additional wall construction. Tim McGraw shares family’s creative Christmas tradition: ‘Curious to see what they come up with this year’

Tim McGraw shares family's creative Christmas tradition: 'Curious to see what they come up with this year'

Tim McGraw is sharing his family’s unique holiday traditions. During an interview on Audacy’s “Katie & Company” in their “Superstar Power Hour,” the “Humble and Kind” singer spoke about a fun family tradition his daughters started, which he looks forward to every year. “They’ve created this theme night thing that we do. It’s based on TV shows or movies or books sometimes, and they’ll pick a theme, and then we’ll have a dinner. The food has to fit the theme as well,” McGraw explained.  “We’ll put all these characters in a hat, and everybody has to draw a character, and then you have to dress up as that character. But you can only use things that you can find around the house.” TIM MCGRAW SHARES HIS FIRST PHOTO WITH FAITH HILL TO CELEBRATE WEDDING ANNIVERSARY The singer elaborated, saying his daughters invite all their friends to join them for dinner, noting it’s fun to watch them run around his house trying to find accessories to match the theme. They’ve gone through quite a few popular themes. “We did ‘Game of Thrones.’ One night, we did ‘The Great.’ We did Harry Potter,” McGraw said.  Since the family has already tackled many movies and TV shows, McGraw says he is “curious to see what they come up with this year.”  The Grammy Award-winning musician shares three daughters with his wife, Faith Hill — Gracie, Maggie Elizabeth and Audrey Caroline.  APP USERS CLICK HERE FOR POST Their youngest daughter, Audrey, plays a special role in one of their other Christmas traditions. “Dec. 6 is her birthday, so we always decorate our tree on her birthday,” McGraw explained. “So, that’s one of our traditions.”  He has also found new ways to incorporate some traditions from his childhood into his life as a father. “I always cook. My mom’s Italian, so I grew up on Christmas Eve having pasta for Christmas Eve dinner. I make spagetti and meatballs every New Year’s Eve, and we usually have it around noon or 1, so all the family we have that lives in our area all show up,” he said on the podcast.  “We usually have 20 or 30 people … and then we play games after and karaoke. We always have karaoke set up. And then I have to listen to my daughters doing two hours of ‘Hamilton.’” CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR THE ENTERTAINMENT NEWSLETTER During the interview, he called the holidays a “busy” time because all his daughters are back home. Earlier this year, McGraw shared on Audacy’s “Rob + Holly Show” how hard it was for him to help move his daughter Gracie cross country. “I drove my daughter to LA when she moved out there and drove cross country with her. I took all the seats out of my Cadillac Escalade and loaded it up with all of her stuff,” he explained. “When I dropped her off, I mean, I just lost it. … And then I had to drive home all by myself. … I was crying the whole time.” LIKE WHAT YOU’RE READING? CLICK HERE FOR MORE ENTERTAINMENT NEWS While it was hard for McGraw to let his daughter go, he also told the outlet it led to a song based on the experience for his 17th studio album, “Standing Room Only.” It came about when he called his friend, guitarist Bobby Minner, and had “a heart-to-heart about dropping [Gracie] off,” which inspired Minner to write the song for him. Hill and McGraw have kept both their marriage and the lives of their children private for the most part. However, as their daughters get older, they continue to step into the spotlight every so often.  Gracie had a recurring role on Tyler Perry’s series, “If Loving You Is Wrong” from 2018 to 2020 and has received praise for posting videos of herself singing on social media, including one of her covering “I’m Not That Girl” from the hit Broadway musical, “Wicked.” She was also featured on her dad’s 2015 hit “Here Tonight.” CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP “They’re the life of the party every time they’re around,” McGraw told Entertainment Tonight in August about his daughters. “They just inspire us in so many ways. I’d love to do a song with all five of us at some point. I talk about it all the time, and they’re like, ‘I ain’t singing with you, dad.'”

NBA forcing Hornets’ LaMelo Ball to cover up tattoo: report

NBA forcing Hornets' LaMelo Ball to cover up tattoo: report

Charlotte Hornets star LaMelo Ball has a tattoo of the initials “LF” below his left ear — and the NBA is reportedly forcing him to cover it up. The initials are short for “LaFrance,” which is Ball’s middle name, his uncle’s name and the name of his clothing brand. However, the league has a rule that players must not have commercial logos visible on their bodies. CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM “Per the [collective bargaining agreement], players are prohibited from displaying commercial logos or corporate insignia on their body or in their hair during games,” NBA spokesperson Tim Frank said in a statement. “We try to enforce the rule reasonably, in accordance with its purpose, and taking into account players’ efforts to express themselves in a non-commercial manner. But LaMelo Ball’s neck tattoo is in obvious violation of the rule and, accordingly, he’s required to cover it.” WARRIORS HEAD COACH STEVE KERR: DRAYMOND GREEN ‘CROSSED’ LINE WITH CHOKEHOLD, SUSPENSION IS ‘DESERVED’ ESPN reports that Ball and the NBA have spoken over the last several weeks about the tattoo. He first covered it up on Tuesday to avoid being fined by the league, and is expected to do so again on Friday night. Nothing has been officially resolved just yet, but the two sides will continue to work on both short- and long-term resolutions. The NBA forced Ball’s older brother, Lonzo, to cover up the family’s “Big Baller Brand” logo that he had inked on him in 2018 when he was with the Los Angeles Lakers. Ball is averaging 22.2 points and 8.6 assists in his 10 contests this season. The third pick of the 2020 NBA Draft signed a five-year extension this past offseason that could be worth $260 million. Boston’s Logan Airport not ‘appropriate place’ to house displaced migrants, Massport CEO says

Boston's Logan Airport not 'appropriate place' to house displaced migrants, Massport CEO says

About 20 to 25 migrants are arriving daily at Boston’s Logan Airport, the head of the airport operator said Friday, with some seen camping out temporarily in baggage claim and elsewhere before trying to find a spot in the state’s overburdened shelter system. But Massport interim CEO Ed Freni told reporters that the airport is “not an appropriate place” for migrants to stay, even as some were seen sleeping at the facility as the state grapples with the shelter crisis. “When they come to Logan we meet them and we try to assist them, but we have to emphasize that Logan is not an appropriate place to house people,” Freni told reporters. The airport works with partners to transport the migrants to welcome centers and is looking to “other solutions in the future,” Freni said. $24.5B NEEDED FOR BOSTON TRANSIT REPAIRS, MBTA SAYS This week, Massachusetts lawmakers did not approve $250 million in emergency aid for the shelter system. Massachusetts’ emergency shelter system hit a state-imposed limit of 7,500 families last week, and migrant advocates are relying on a patchwork of temporary shelters, including churches, hospital waiting rooms and even airport lounges. Because the shelter system is full, some homeless people have had to be put on a waiting list. A new work authorization clinic is serving several hundred shelter residents per day. The clinic at Camp Curtis Guild, a Massachusetts National Guard training site in Reading, helps migrants obtain work authorization in the hopes of easing the strain on shelters. State lawmakers who failed to approve a supplemental budget embarked for the Thanksgiving break with no plans to formally convene again for votes until the new year. Lawmakers could approve additional spending in informal sessions before year’s end, but legislative rules make it easier to derail bills during informal sessions.

Warriors head coach Steve Kerr: Draymond Green ‘crossed’ line with chokehold, suspension is ‘deserved’

Warriors head coach Steve Kerr: Draymond Green 'crossed' line with chokehold, suspension is 'deserved'

Draymond Green was suspended five games for his role in a brawl between his Golden State Warriors and the Minnesota Timberwolves Tuesday night after the polarizing forward put Rudy Gobert in a headlock.  Green, Klay Thompson and Jaden McDaniels were all ejected just two minutes into Tuesday night’s game after the latter two got tangled up. Gobert looked like he was trying to play peacemaker and break it up, but Green, from out of nowhere, rushed in and grabbed Gobert from behind, putting his arms around Gobert’s neck and dragging him in a chokehold. CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM It was Green’s 18th career ejection, the second-most in NBA history, and it’s the fifth time he’s been suspended. The incident went “too far,” his head coach said. Steve Kerr, who has coached Green since 2014, said the NBA had no choice but to punish him. “He took it too far,” Kerr said before the Warriors’ 128-109 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder Thursday, via the New York Post. “Draymond was wrong. He knows that. It’s a bad look, and the five games are deserved.” LOOKING BACK AT DRAYMOND GREEN’S ON-COURT ALTERCATIONS WITH WARRIORS AFTER LATEST SUSPENSION “I don’t have a problem with [Green] trying to get Rudy off of Klay … but he’s got to let go,” Kerr added. “He hung on for six, seven seconds. It was a terrible visual for the league, for Draymond and for everybody.” Kerr said Green needs to work on his on-court behavior. “Draymond has to find a way to not cross the line,” Kerr said. “I’m not talking about getting an ejection or a technical. I’m talking about a physical act of violence. That’s inexcusable. We have to do everything we can to give him the help and assistance he needs to be able to draw that distinction between being an incredible competitor, but he can’t cross that line. He crossed it the other night, for sure.” Green will be eligible to return Nov. 28 against the Sacramento Kings. Green served a one-game suspension in the playoffs last year for stomping on Kings’ Domantas Sabonis. Fox News’ Scott Thompson contributed to this report. Pro-Palestinian protester charged in Jewish man Paul Kessler’s death could face hate crime as DA probes speech

Pro-Palestinian protester charged in Jewish man Paul Kessler's death could face hate crime as DA probes speech

The pro-Palestinian protester jailed on $1 million bond in the death of pro-Israel protester Paul Kessler will face hate crime charges only if investigators can determine that hate speech accompanied the blow that caused the Jewish man to fall. Ventura County District Attorney Erik Nasarenko told reporters at a Friday press conference that the county’s Sheriff’s Department had interviewed 60 witnesses, reviewed more than 600 videos and put forth 2,000 work hours into their investigation of Loay Abdelfattah Alnaji, 50.  “We have not ruled out a hate crime – an investigation into an alleged hate crime is ongoing,” Nasarenko said Friday. “We are looking for whether the act was accompanied by hate speech, specific words . . . that show hatred toward a specific group. We don’t have that at the moment.”  The DA’s office was called in within 24 hours of Kessler’s November 6 death, Nasarenko said, which happened hours after the 69-year-old was struck by Alnaji amid a dispute at conflicting pro-Israel and pro-Palestinian protests on the corners of Westlake and Thousand Oaks Boulevards in Westlake Village around 3:20 p.m. on November 5. PRO-PALESTINIAN PROTESTER ARRESTED IN DEATH OF JEWISH MAN PAUL KESSLER The blow knocked Kessler down onto the concrete – with a megaphone, witnesses told Fox News Digital – and caused skull fractures, brain bruising and swelling that would later kill him.  “New physical and forensic evidence regarding the injuries to the left side of Paul Kessler’s face” contributed to Alnaji’s arrest on Thursday, Ventura County Sheriff James Fryhoff said. PRO-PALESTINIAN PROTESTER ‘TRIED TO BAIT’ ELDERLY JEWISH MAN BEFORE FATAL ALTERCATION, WITNESS SAYS After he was taken into custody at his Moorpark home around 7:40 a.m. Thursday without incident, the district attorney said, Alnaji was charged with involuntary manslaughter and battery causing serious bodily injury. Investigators have “no evidence, no statements whatsoever that the defendant arrived at that intersection with the intention to kill.” Therefore, no murder charge was pursued, Nasarenko said.  HUNDREDS HONOR JEWISH MAN PAUL KESSLER KILLED IN CLASH WITH PRO-PALESTINIAN PROTESTER: ‘WE WANT JUSTICE’ Both charges that have been filed come with “special allegations that Alnaji personally inflicted great bodily injury.”  This, Nasarenko said Tuesday, allows those charges to count toward California’s “Three Strikes” law. Should Alnaji be charged with a third crime, he would face a mandatory 25 years to life behind bars.  But the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department still has not procured evidence that could lead to a hate crime charge, despite the protests at the backdrop of the incident.  JEWISH MAN’S DEATH AT CALIFORNIA RALLY COMPLICATED BY CONFLICTING WITNESS ACCOUNTS Investigators are still urging the public to come forward with any recollections or video of the November 5 incident in their investigation.  Nasarenko thanked both area Jewish and Muslim communities for their cooperation and patience amid the investigation.  ELDERLY JEWISH MAN DIED IN CONFRONTATION WITH PRO-PALESTINIAN PROTESTER AT CALIFORNIA RALLY A source with the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department has told Fox News Digital that individuals across the country have repeatedly called the department urging swift action in the case. Nasarenko and Fryhoff said they spoke with Kessler’s family for about 30 minutes following Alnaji’s arrest. They shared that Kessler had worked in medical sales, taught sales at a number of satellite college campuses and had been married for 44 years.  “[Kessler’s family] are mourning, they are grieving, and they are asking for privacy during this very difficult time,” Nasarenko said. Alnaji is scheduled to be arraigned at 1:30 p.m. PST in Ventura County Superior Court.

US troops targeted in three more attacks at bases in Iraq, Syria, leaving one injured

US troops targeted in three more attacks at bases in Iraq, Syria, leaving one injured

Terrorists attacked U.S. military bases in Iraq and Syria on Friday, striking three facilities with one-way drones and leaving at least one soldier injured, a report says.  The incidents bring the total number of attacks on U.S. coalition forces to 60 since October 17, the Associated Press is reporting, citing two U.S. officials.  At least 59 service members have been wounded in the attacks, but the Pentagon has said that all injuries were minor and that those troops will be able to return to duty.  Iran-backed terrorist groups have launched attacks almost daily since October 17, the day a blast at a Gaza hospital killed hundreds and sparked protests across the region. LIVE UPDATES: ISRAEL AT WAR WITH HAMAS  The U.S. has repeatedly warned the groups to desist and avoid escalating the war between Israel and Hamas into a wider conflict.  On Friday, a one-way drone targeted Al Harir air base in Erbil, Iraq, with no casualties reported, but a damage assessment was still ongoing, according to the AP.  Multiple one-way drones also attacked Al Asad air base in Iraq but caused no injuries or infrastructure damage, and another multiple one-way drone attack at Tall Baydar, Syria, resulted in minor injuries to one service member, who was able to return to duty, a defense official told the news agency.  US FORCES IN SYRIA AND IRAQ ATTACKED DOZENS OF TIMES SINCE MID-OCTOBER  Senior Pentagon officials said in late October that the attacks have “Iranian fingerprints all over” them.  One defense official who held a background briefing at that time said that Iran is funding, equipping, guiding and directing partners and proxies across the Middle East, including Lebanese Hezbollah militia groups in Iran, Syria and Yemen.  “I think it’s fair to say when you see this uptick in activity in attacks by many of these groups, there’s Iranian fingerprints all over it,” the defense official said.  Fox News’ Greg Wehner and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

New York man charged with child rape after police rescue kidnapped nine-year-old from his cabinet

New York man charged with child rape after police rescue kidnapped nine-year-old from his cabinet

Craig Ross Jr., the 46-year-old New York man accused of abducting a nine-year-old girl from her bicycle and holding her for ransom, is now accused of raping the child while he kept her captive in a camper behind his mom’s double-wide trailer. A Saratoga County court unsealed a nine-count indictment Friday as Ross pleaded not guilty to the charges. Police arrested Ross last month on kidnapping charges, but he now faces charges of first-degree rape, predatory sex assault against a child and more. ATTORNEY ACCUSED OF SLAYING FATHER OVER FINANCIAL DISPUTE HANGS HIMSELF IN PRISON Police say he left his fingerprints on a ransom note that a state trooper watched him stuff into the victim’s family’s mailbox. CLICK HERE FOR MORE TRUE CRIME FROM FOX NEWS A DUI arrest from 1999 helped police identify the suspect, whom they traced to the camper on his mother’s property. “Within the camper, they located the suspect,” New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said during a news briefing after tactical teams captured Ross and rescued the girl alive. “After some resistance, the suspect was taken into custody, and immediately the little girl was found in a cabinet, covered. She was rescued.” Ross’ mother told reporters to get off her property when approached for comment, and she has not returned calls. Judge James Murphy ordered Ross held without bail and scheduled his next hearing for December 21. In addition to the DWI, Ross had a prior domestic violence charge. State police told Fox News Digital that there was no record of any sex-related crimes in his past. Ross’ son told Fox News Digital that he hoped his father dies in prison over the allegations. He also said that he hadn’t seen any warning signs. “I don’t know anything,” he said. “I hate him and hope he dies in prison.” Fox News’ Chris Eberhart contributed to this report.
