100th fatality reported in Maui wildfire

100th fatality reported in Maui wildfire

The death toll from the wildfire that devastated the historic Maui town of Lahaina last summer has risen to 100 after a 78-year-old woman injured in the disaster died last month, officials said Tuesday. HAWAII WILDFIRE RAVAGES OAHU’S NATIVE RAINFOREST, POSING THREAT TO FRAGILE ECOSYSTEMS The victim was among those who had been flown to Oahu after the Aug. 8 wildfire, the deadliest U.S. wildfire in more than a century, Maui police spokesperson Alana Pico said in an email. The woman died Sept. 4, said Honolulu Medical Examiner Dr. Masahiko Kobayashi. His office previously provided an incorrect date. Authorities have identified 99 victims in a process that has proved long and complicated. Forensic experts and cadaver dogs sifted through ash searching for bodies that were possibly cremated, and authorities collected DNA samples from victims’ family members. The youngest victim was 7 and the oldest was 97. Several were residents of a low-income senior apartment complex. Of the victims, 44 were 70 or older.

Tiger Woods’ son, Charlie, accomplishes feat father never has in high school

Tiger Woods' son, Charlie, accomplishes feat father never has in high school

Tiger Woods’ son, Charlie, just accomplished a feat on the golf course his legendary father didn’t this week.  Woods, along with his The Benjamin School teammates, won the Florida state high school golf championship. Woods shot 78-76 in the two days of the FHSAA Class A state championship on Wednesday at Mission Inn Resort and Club in Howey-In-The-Hills, Florida.  CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM The Benjamin School, located in Palm Beach Gardens, had five total golfers in the tournament, including the 14-year-old freshman in Woods. He finished tied-26th overall.  But The Benjamin School is no stranger to winning it all, as this was its fourth state title. TIGER WOODS TAKES SWIPE AT LIV GOLF AS HE TALKS UP NEW LEAGUE: ‘HERE IT’S VERY SIMPLE’ Jake Valentine, a sophomore at the private day school, scored birdie on the 17th hole on day two of the tournament as well as a putt on the final hole to clinch the title for The Benjamin School. He shot 72-76 to lead his squad to victory.  The elder Woods was among the gallery watching the state title play out. There was a moment caught on video, too, of his son holing out a chip just off a green that featured a typical Woods fist pump and reaction.  As a high schooler himself, Woods was never able to collect a high school state title while at Western High School in Anaheim, California. However, state golf championships were not instituted while Woods was in high school, so there is a caveat here.  Obviously, though, his son has a lot to live up to considering Woods remains the youngest golfer to ever win the U.S. Junior Amateur title, which he won in 1991. He would win it two more times before going on to his illustrious pro career.  But Charlie Woods is clearly in love with the sport, and his father admitted he has started to out-drive him when they play together. Perhaps one day the next generation of Woods will be on the PGA Tour wreaking havoc to the competition as his father did for years. He’s already loving that winning feeling now in high school.

Democratic congressman calls out violent anti-Israel protesters, says some have been ‘duped’

Democratic congressman calls out violent anti-Israel protesters, says some have been 'duped'

Rep. Brad Sherman, D-Calif, said on “The Faulkner Focus” Thursday that many anti-Israel protesters are being “duped” into supporting Hamas terrorism. Sherman said Wednesday night that he was evacuated from DNC headquarters with the help of Capitol Police officers after protesters turned violent, pepper-spraying police and attempting to enter the building. PRO-PALESTINIAN VIOLENT PROTEST ERUPTS OUTSIDE DNC HEADQUARTERS IN WASHINGTON DC, CAPITOL POLICE INJURED BRAD SHERMAN: The Hamas object was to attack and kill as many Israelis as they could – 1,200 – on October 7th, retreat, regroup, and then do it again. And that’s not me speaking, that’s top Hamas leadership. And I think some of the demonstrators support that plan. Others are duped into the idea that somehow a truce that allows Hamas to regroup and repeat will bring peace, and obviously that isn’t the case. We all want a cease-fire, but the best way to get a cease-fire is for Hamas to release its hostages and disarm. And then the killing and the terrible scenes from Gaza can stop.  Police in the nation’s capital responded to the headquarters of the Democratic National Committee as pro-Palestinian demonstrators grew violent as they called for an immediate cease-fire in the ongoing Israel-Hamas war. U.S. Capitol Police (USCP) said about 150 people were “illegally and violently protesting” near the DNC headquarters building in the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Washington. Protesters told Fox News Digital that there were 300 people protesting the war. Arizona Rep. Andy Biggs, a Republican, posted that the “nation’s capital is under siege.” “Last week, it was the White House,” Biggs wrote. “This week, it’s the DNC.” “These left-wing lunatics have to be held accountable,” he added. Prestigious universities plagued by antisemitism receive billions in taxpayer-backed cash, analysis finds

Prestigious universities plagued by antisemitism receive billions in taxpayer-backed cash, analysis finds

Columbia and Stanford universities, which have been beset by antisemitic events on their campuses during Israel’s war with Hamas, received billions in taxpayer dollars in recent years, according to an analysis. Critics have assailed universities in recent weeks over what they say is an inadequate response to the antisemitic events, prompting questions and concerns over federal funding going to such institutions. OpenTheBooks, a government watchdog group, examined 10 top-tier universities’ federal funding and found that Columbia and Stanford sat atop the stack and acquired a staggering amount of cash supported by taxpayers. “Regular people are asking why taxpayer money is flowing into any university where they’ve incubated discrimination, bigotry and antisemitism,” OpenTheBooks founder Adam Andrzejewski told Fox News Digital. “Let alone advocacy of terrorism against our closest ally in the Middle East. Public funding and discrimination of any type cannot be reconciled.” ELITE AMERICAN UNIVERSITIES RECEIVING BILLIONS IN FEDERAL FUNDS SEE RISE IN ANTISEMITISM: ‘GAMED THE TAX CODE’ The group found that Stanford acquired federal funds at a higher clip than the other elite universities over a five-year span. According to their analysis, the school received roughly $7 billion in taxpayer-backed cash between 2018 and 2022, including federal grants and contracts. Columbia, meanwhile, obtained roughly $5.8 million in federal grants and contracts during the same period, the group said. “In fiscal year 2022, Stanford received $1.6 billion in federal grants and contracts, while they charged $598 million in undergraduate student tuition,” Andrzejewski said. “It’s a similar picture at Columbia. The feds sent them $1.26 billion while student tuition amounted to $769 million.” “These wealthy, elite universities get twice as much funding for acting as a federal contractor than an educator,” he added. Overall, the 10 universities studied received $33 billion in federal grants and contracts over the five years. The group also analyzed the University of Pennsylvania, Yale, Harvard, Northwestern, Cornell, Princeton, Brown and Dartmouth. “It’s time that Congress reconsiders the primary missions of these institutions,” Andrzejewski said. “These universities enjoy special nonprofit tax status while they stuff their endowments with tens of billions in private-sector donations and off-load the costs of their research on the American taxpayer.” Not only do Columbia and Stanford sit atop the pile of federal cash in the analysis, but they also have been among those scrutinized over antisemitic occurrences on campuses. TOP REPUBLICAN WANTS TO BAN UNIVERSITIES ENABLING ‘ANTISEMITISM’ FROM COLLECTING TAXPAYER CASH: ‘ABHORRENT’ Since Hamas’ brutal Oct. 7 attack on Israeli citizens that left over 1,200 dead, Columbia’s campus has experienced walkouts and rallies along with verbal and written clashes between students and faculty.  The events included nearly two dozen student groups signing a letter “holding the Israeli occupation accountable for its actions and putting an end to the untenable status quo of Israel’s apartheid and colonial system.”  Additionally, two student organizations – Students for Justice in Palestine and Jewish Voice for Peace – were suspended from the university through the end of the fall term for violating university policies. The school said the two student groups “repeatedly violated university policies related to holding campus events, culminating in an unauthorized event [last] Thursday afternoon that proceeded despite warnings and included threatening rhetoric and intimidation.” On Wednesday, students and staff at the school protested the removal of the groups, Fox News Digital reported. Meanwhile, a Columbia professor went viral for decrying the response by the school regarding antisemitic incidents. A Jewish student was also attacked with a stick after objecting to a woman tearing down posters of Hamas hostages. Columbia did not respond to a Fox News Digital request for comment. Stanford, on the other hand, has also experienced antisemitic incidents on its campus while seeing its leaders come under the microscope. NYC COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY FACULTY AND STUDENTS PROTEST SUSPENSION OF 2 FAR-LEFT GROUPS Stanford President Richard Saller and Provost Jenny Martinez came under fire for initially failing to condemn Hamas in a letter responding to their terrorist attack. Their actions led to over 1,800 Stanford affiliates slamming them in a letter, the Stanford Daily reported in late October.  When contacted for comment, the university pointed Fox News Digital to statements the university released, including one from Martinez days after the student publication reported on the letter. “I want to be unequivocally clear that Stanford stands against antisemitism and recognizes the deep historical roots of this form of hate and the ways in which Jewish students, faculty, and staff are affected by this historical legacy and its current manifestations,” Martinez said in the statement. Furthermore, a Stanford instructor was also dismissed from the classroom after downplaying the Holocaust and singling out students “based on their backgrounds and identities,” CNN reported. The rising antisemitic events on campuses – and many times, a lackluster response – have led to lawmakers such as House GOP Conference Chair Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., calling for tightening the taxpayer valve on those institutions. “It is abhorrent that Harvard and universities across America are enabling horrific antisemitism to run rampant on their campuses,” Stefanik told Fox News Digital last week. “U.S. taxpayer dollars should be prohibited from funding any institution that promotes antisemitism or anti-Israel bigotry, and House Republicans will hold these extremist institutions accountable for failing their students.”

If lying was an art, Michael Cohen would be a Rembrandt. Why does he keep getting a pass?

If lying was an art, Michael Cohen would be a Rembrandt. Why does he keep getting a pass?

If lying were an art form, former Trump fixer Michael Cohen would be its Rembrandt.  Throughout his career, the disbarred lawyer has found powerful clients who valued his reputation for supporting any side that offered the biggest payback.  Now he is accused of yet another lie under oath and the question is whether his current benefactors will again protect him from a criminal charge. TOP REPUBLICANS CALL FOR DOJ PROBE INTO MICHAEL COHEN FOR ‘KNOWINGLY’ MAKING FALSE STATEMENTS TO CONGRESS For years, Cohen was the heavy for Donald Trump who threatened everyone from journalists to students with ruin for threatening the former president. Faced with disbarment and criminal charges, he then became an equally vicious critic of Trump; a human cudgel for Democrats. The most remarkable about his checkered career is the one constant: a long, uninterrupted line of lies upon lies. Indeed, he is now accused of lying about prior lies. I have been a critic of Cohen for years, going back to work as a legal thug for Trump. That criticism continued after Cohen sought to raise money from Democrats as a Trump killer as opposed to a Trump enabler. Those of us familiar with his history warned about the notion that he was now a “liberated former liar.” As expected, the sides changed but the lies continued. TRUMP FACES OFF IN COURT WITH COHEN AS EX-LAWYER TESTIFIES AGAINST HIM IN TRUMP ORGANIZATION CIVIL TRIAL He would appear as the new star Democratic witness before House Oversight Committee chairman, Elijah Cummings, and was promptly accused of lying under oath again. Cummings, who would later chair the January 6th Committee, refused to take any action against Cohen. He had again found a powerful ally who valued his moral flexibility. Even after being stripped of his bar license and sentenced to three years in prison, Cohen continued the pattern. In 2019, Cohen failed to appear to testify before the Senate Intelligence Committee, citing the inability to travel due to a medical surgery. However, he was seen partying before the hearing date with five friends with no apparent problems. Even in jail, Cohen was accused of lying to a court in violation of an order for early release due to medical problems. He was ordered back into custody after being spotted at a high-end restaurant. Nevertheless, Cohen has few illusions about his sudden alliance with media outlets and Democratic figures. He does not have to be truthful; he has to be useful. That celebrated role continued this year when Cohen was called to testify in the New York fraud case brought by Attorney General Letitia James. It mattered little to James that Cohen is a serial liar. Yet, even her office may have been surprised with the ease with which Cohen now admits to false statements. TRUMP SUES FORMER ATTORNEY MICHAEL COHEN FOR $500 MILLION During his recent testimony, Cohen was confronted by statements about Trump inflating the value of his properties that directly contradicted his sworn testimony before Congress. Most witnesses would be petrified by the prospect of admitting lying under oath. Most would refuse to testify under the Fifth Amendment. Not Cohen. He simply seemed to shrug it off and admitted that he previously lied under oath in 2019 before Congress. In testifying before the House Intelligence Committee on February 28, 2019, Cohen was asked about the same alleged violation and responded: “I’m sorry. Did he ask me to inflate the numbers? Not that I recall, no.” When read that answer in New York, Cohen admitted that he was not being “honest” with Congress. Trump attorney Alina Habba then asked him: “So you lied under oath in February of 2019? Is that your testimony?” Cohen replied “yes.” For Cohen, the admission of a lie is hardly a significant moment. He pleaded guilty to felonies including false statements to banks in 2018. After professing his profound guilt and remorse, he was sentenced to three years. He then later said that he really did not mean it in denying aspects of the plea. TRUMP DROPS LAWSUIT AGAINST MICHAEL COHEN, VOWS TO RE-FILE AFTER HE HAS ‘PREVAILED’ IN OTHER CASES After that plea and then denying the sworn plea, Cohen was called to give testimony before the House Intelligence Committee. He now says that he proceeded to lie again. House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Turner and House Republican Conference Chair Elise Stefanik have sent a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland for an investigation into the admitted false testimony. This would seem an embarrassingly easy case for a prosecutor. A serial liar just admitted under oath that he lied previously under oath. There is a five-year statute of limitations on lying to Congress. Moreover, this is the attorney general who aggressively pursued Trump officials and associates for contempt and other violations linked to congressional investigations. It is also the same department that prosecuted figures like Gen. Michael Flynn for false statements made to FBI agents. CLICK HERE FOR MORE FOX NEWS OPINION For Cohen, the key to his career has been to lie to the right people at the right time. It is now up to Garland whether he will join a long line of powerful allies covering for Cohen. Cohen may be able to again evade real punishment. When he was still thumping people for Trump, Cohen told the reporter that he should “tread very f—ing lightly because what I’m going to do to you is going to be f—ing disgusting. Do you understand me?” When it comes to the legal system, Cohen is ironically true to his word. What he has done to the legal system for decades is truly disgusting. The New York bar took no action for years until Cohen confessed to crimes to secure a plea deal.  Past incidents of alleged perjury before Congress were ignored because prosecution would have been inconvenient. Now he has nonchalantly acknowledged lying under oath in 2019 after pleading guilty to criminal falsehoods. The problem is not Cohen. He continues to act to his nature. The problem is a political and legal system that enables him as a serial liar. It is a system that continues to call Cohen to the stand and ask him to swear to God to offer the “truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth” without a signature joke drum roll before his punchline.  The fact that Cohen can say “I do” without breaking up in laughter reflects a true artist at work. UN official causes uproar over claim that Israel doesn’t have right to defend itself against Hamas terrorists

UN official causes uproar over claim that Israel doesn't have right to defend itself against Hamas terrorists

The U.N. special rapporteur to the occupied Palestinian territory claimed this week that Israel does not have a right to self-defense against Hamas under international law and accused the country of committing “war crimes.” The comments from Francesca Albanese came Tuesday during an address to the National Press Club of Australia, when she deemed Israel’s right to self-defense “non-existent” under international law as she took aim at the war-torn country for its “unrelenting bombardment of Gaza” and other actions. Israel, according to Albanese, cannot claim a right to self-defense because they are not under threat from another state. “Israel cannot claim the right of self-defense against a threat that emanates from a territory it occupies, from a territory that is under belligerent occupation,” Albanese said from the event in Canberra, Australia. US LETS UN SECURITY COUNCIL RESOLUTION CALLING FOR PAUSES IN GAZA FIGHTING PASS WITHOUT HAMAS CONDEMNATION “What Israel was allowed to do was to act to establish law and order, to repel the attack, neutralize whomever was carrying out the attacks and then proceed with law and order measures … not waging a war,” she added. Anne Bayefsky, director of the Touro Institute on Human Rights and the Holocaust, slammed Albanese’s comments, saying they go “hand-in-hand with all her other legally-indefensible claims” surrounding the conflict. “Starting from October 7th until now, no major U.N. actor has said plainly that Israel has a right of self-defense. This is despite the fact that the U.N. Charter unambiguously declares every U.N. member has the inherent right of self-defense,” Bayefsky claimed in an email to Fox News Digital. “In the deafening silence, anti-Israel and antisemitic extremists hiding under the titles of U.N. ‘experts,’ have gone on the offensive and proclaimed that Israel has no U.N. Charter right of self-defense against the barbaric Palestinian terrorists who slaughtered and butchered their people. The Nazis said the same thing of their Jewish victims.” “Albanese’s abhorrent remarks go hand-in-hand with all her other legally-indefensible claims, such as defending a Palestinian ‘right to resist’ that ‘requires violence.’ Likewise, Navi Pillay, head of a U.N. so-called ‘Commission of Inquiry’ against Israel created back in 2021, has repeatedly spoken since October 7th of a Palestinian right of ‘armed struggle.’ These aren’t misguided lawyers. They are champions of hate, of antisemitism, of lethal violence against the Jewish people. It is an atrocity that they are given U.N. titles and a global platform of any kind at all,” Bayefsky added. Albanese claimed Israel’s actions toward the Palestinian people in Gaza, which have been relentless since Hamas terrorists invaded Israel on Oct. 7, are “wrong.” AOC LEADS TWO DOZEN DEMOCRATS CALLING FOR ISRAEL CEASEFIRE OVER ‘VIOLATIONS AGAINST CHILDREN’ IN GAZA “How many more people need to die,” she questioned at the event. Albanese also expressed concern over the potential that Israel “might commit the crime of genocide against the Palestinian people” and took aim at the international community in her speech, claiming most state governments are almost “completely paralyzed” amid the unfolding crisis in the Middle East. “In the face of all of this, the international community is almost completely paralyzed,” she said. “I am being generous when I say the U.N. is experiencing its most epic political and humanitarian failure since its creation.” “Individual member states, especially in the West, and Australia is no exception, are on the margins,” she added. “Muttering notable words of condemnation for Israel’s success at best or staying silent in fear of restraining Israel’s … claimed right to self-defense. Whatever that means.” The international community’s positioning on the issue, Albanese claimed, “epitomizes” how governments around the world have “so ethically failed to promote peace and security for both Palestinians and Israelis, premised on international law, the end of Israel’s 56-year-old patient and the realization of Palestinian self-determination and freedom.” Additionally, Albanese called for a cease-fire and the return of Israeli hostages, among other things. She also used her speech to defend the Palestinians, saying they had been subjected to a “violent structure of dispossession, confiscation of land, and forcible displacement.” ANTISEMITISM EXPOSED “When it is widespread and systemic, [it] is not just a war crime, it is a crime against humanity,” Albanese said. Following Albanese’s comments, Austrian Volker Türk, the U.N. high commissioner for human rights, condemned on Thursday the rights violations in the Israel-Hamas war and concluded an international investigation was needed. “Extremely serious allegations of multiple and profound breaches of international humanitarian law, whoever commits them, demand rigorous investigation and full accountability,” Türk said in a briefing to U.N. member states from Geneva. In response to the U.N.’s growing anti-Israel actions, Lior Haiat, Israel’s spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, told Fox News Digital that, “Israel and the IDF operate under international law, if there should be an investigation it should be under war crimes and crimes against humanity that Hamas terrorist organization on the Oct 7 massacre and since then, including the massacre of over 1200 people and kidnapping 239, among them babies, children that have seen their parents murdered in front of their eyes, entire families, Holocaust survivors and an investigation on the use Hamas using the Palestinian people as human shields and the use of hospitals, schools and mosques as cover for their terrorist activities.” Late last month, Israel’s Ambassador to the United Nations Gilad Erdan urged António Guterres to resign, ripping into the U.N. secretary-general for ostensibly rationalizing Hamas’ murder of some 1,200 people, including Americans, on Oct. 7 in Israel. CALLS FOR UN LEADER’S RESIGNATION INTENSIFY AFTER ‘SHAMEFUL’ COMMENTS ABOUT HAMAS ATTACKS ON ISRAEL Guterres said Hamas’ attacks “did not happen in a vacuum” and that the “Palestinian people have been subjected to 56 years of suffocating occupation.” Guterres’ claim was rejected by Erdan, however, who insisted Guterres’ comments were “pure blood libel” and said, “This is false. It was the opposite.” Guterres responded to the criticism against him by noting in a statement outside the U.N. Security Council, “I am shocked by the misrepresentations by some of my statements yesterday in the Security Council. As if … as if I was justifying acts of terror by Hamas. This is false. It was the opposite.” On Wednesday, the United States allowed a United Nations Security Council resolution calling for a pause in the fighting within Gaza to pass despite a lack of condemnation for Hamas. Fifteen members of the security council passed the resolution Wednesday, which calls for a cease-fire for a “sufficient number of days” in the Gaza Strip between Israel and Hamas. The resolution also calls for the “unconditional release” of hostages taken by Hamas during the Oct. 7 terrorist attack. Twelve members of the council voted in favor of the resolution, while the U.S., Russia and Britain, who have veto power, abstained from the vote. The Hamas-controlled Ministry of Health claimed last week that more than 10,000 people have been killed in Gaza since the start of the Israel-Hamas war, which is now in its sixth week. Fox News reached out to the United Nations secretary-general’s spokesman for comment. Fox News’ Adam Sabes and Benjamin Weinthal contributed to this report.

‘Do you read me, HAL?’ Space agencies weigh pairing astronauts in deep space with AI companions

'Do you read me, HAL?' Space agencies weigh pairing astronauts in deep space with AI companions

Space agencies around the world are developing AI companions to help astronauts stave off loneliness, combat space-induced mental illness and assist with work on multi-year trips. “Deep space travel will pose unique challenges to crew, challenges that are inherently different from those currently experienced on orbit,” Alexandra Whitmire, a scientist with NASA’s Human Factors and Behavioral Performance team, told Space.com. “Given the distance of Mars, for example, the duration of such a mission will last around 2.5 years.” WHAT IS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)? “The size of the vehicle will be relatively small, suggesting that the crew of four or six will live and work … confined in a small habitat,” Whitmire continued. “An AI social support tool, if proven to be effective, could serve as part of a toolkit of countermeasures available to future crew venturing on a mission to Mars.” Both NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA) have explored whether AI-powered companions would support astronauts’ mental health and workflows during long journeys. In 2018, ESA debuted the Crew Interactive Mobile Companion, known as CIMON, a round volleyball-like computer that floated around the ISS and could aid astronauts with experiments.  Later iterations of CIMON acted as an empathetic human companion aiming to connect emotionally with the crew. It also could answer voice-prompted questions and record interactions. WATCH MORE FOX NEWS DIGITAL ORIGINALS HERE A host of science fiction films have included AI systems that are intended to aid space explorers, such as HAL 9000 from “2001: A Space Odyssey.” Real-world AI systems, however, need additional work, Whitmire said. “More research is needed to understand methods through which this type of support could be granted and to what extent, etc., as well as potential pitfalls, before recommendations are made for AI as a behavioral health countermeasure,” the NASA scientist said.  “It’s possible that for some crew, having an AI ‘companion’ offers a safe sounding board,” Whitmire continued. “For many, however, the ability to connect with family through audio and visual loops and the maintenance of team cohesion of the crew on the mission, will serve as key methods to support their behavioral health.” RED NATION ON THE RED PLANET? THIS COMMUNIST COUNTRY’S LATEST VENTURE COULD BE KEY TO HUMAN ACTIVITY ON MARS NASA is also using AI for other projects like preparing for solar storms’ impacts and helping the agency find UFOs and potentially hazardous asteroids. Meanwhile, Japan’s space agency, JAXA, was the first in history to incorporate AI into a rocket, their Epsilon spacecraft, which debuted in 2013, according to the ESA. The Epsilon’s AI conducted system checks and monitored performance autonomously. SATURN’S RINGS ARE DISAPPEARING, WILL BE INVISIBLE FROM EARTH IN 2025 The French space agency, the UK Space Agency and the Italian Space Agency have all also funded AI projects. Still, the focus should be on AI tools helping astronauts, Whitmire said. “While I think AI has the potential to provide support and could augment measurement and diagnostics as well, our mission (of supporting mental health of future crews), remains largely human-centric and human-driven,” she added.

Biden reveals who he thinks ‘could have the job’ he’s running for as 2024 ‘shadow campaign’ rumors swirl

Biden reveals who he thinks 'could have the job' he's running for as 2024 'shadow campaign' rumors swirl

President Biden told a group of world leaders that California Gov. Gavin Newsom “could have the job I’m looking for” if he wanted, amid a low approval rating and discontent within his own party. “I want to talk about Governor Newsom. I want to thank him. He’s been one hell of a governor, man,” Biden said Wednesday during a welcome reception for APEC Leaders in San Francisco. “Matter of fact, he could be anything he wants. He could have the job I’m looking for.” Biden’s eyebrow-raising comment was made at “the most significant event with world leaders in San Francisco in recent history,” according to the APEC 2023 website for the event. Newsom recently elevated rumors of running a “shadow campaign” amid trips to Israel amid its war with Hamas, before heading to China late last month to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping. LIBERAL COLUMNSITS, DEMS PILE ON BIDEN, SUGGEST DEMOCRATS EMBRACE NEW CANDIDATE AMID DISMAL POLLS “The track record is not good for him to be gallivanting around the world doing basically a shadow campaign for president, just waiting for the moment when they finally decide to throw Biden under the bus,” Rep. Doug LaMalfa, R-Calif., told Fox News Digital amid Newsom’s travels. LaMalfa added that Biden is the “starter” and Newsom is the “backup quarterback” in the 2024 race, as more Democrats vocalize their concern over the strength of a Biden nomination. “I don’t think the president should run,” former Democrat Rep. Tim Ryan recently told CNN. “I don’t think Trump should run; I don’t think President Biden should run.” David Axelrod, a former President Obama advisor, also questioned whether a Biden nomination would be the wisest choice for the Democratic Party next cycle. “Only @JoeBiden can make this decision,” Axelrod posted on social media. “If he continues to run, he will be the nominee of the Democratic Party. What he needs to decide is whether that is wise; whether it’s in HIS best interest or the country’s?”  FETTERMAN HITS NEWSOM FOR NOT HAVING ‘GUTS’ TO ADMIT HE’S RUNNING SHADOW CAMPAIGN AGAINST BIDEN An anonymous former state lawmaker in Michigan suggested Biden is a “transitional president.” “It feels like he was the perfect person for 2020. But not for 2024,” a former Democratic state lawmaker, whose name was not revealed, told The Wall Street Journal. “He’s a transitional president, and you have to know when to transition, and it is now.” While some Democrats are calling for Biden to step aside, Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., accused Newsom of running a shadow campaign and not having the “guts to announce it.” “Let me say something that might be uncomfortable,” Fetterman said at a Democratic Party dinner in Iowa. “Right now there are two additional Democrats running for Pennsylvania, excuse me, running for president right now. One, one is a congressman from Minnesota. The other one is the governor of California. They’re both running for president, but only one had the guts to announce it.” Biden campaign manager Julie Chávez Rodríguez told reporters on the eve of the second Republican presidential nomination debate in September that Newsom has been a “tremendous asset to the campaign, and we’re really grateful to have him as part of our national advisory board.” Newsom has said he would not run against Biden in 2024, but should the president drop out of the race, Axios predicts potential Democratic alternatives are positioning themselves to jump in the race. “Democratic governors and senators are quietly moving to boost their national profiles and position themselves to run for president in 2028 — or in 2024, if President Biden unexpectedly drops out,” Axios reported in a recent story. As many Democrats and strategists express concern over a 2024 Biden campaign, Fox News and Quinnipiac University surveys, both dropped Wednesday, reveal 59% of voters currently disapprove of Biden’s job performance as president. A recent CNN poll also found Biden trailing Trump by four percentage points, 49%-45%, among registered voters in a hypothetical 2024 matchup. Democratic Rep. Dean Phillips, D-Minn., and spiritual guru Marianne Williamson are both running in the primary against Biden, who will turn 81 years old on Nov. 20 and continue making history as the oldest American president to-date. Fox News’ Nikolas Lanum and Andrew Mark Miller contributed to this report.

US aviation experts warn of declining safety conditions at airports

Federal Aviation Administration Sign

Aviation experts who examined the Federal Aviation Administration’s safety record say the agency needs better staffing, equipment and technology to cope with a surge in the most serious close calls between planes. The group said Wednesday that the margin of safety in the nation’s airspace is eroding and will get worse if nothing is done. The outside experts tied most of the FAA’s challenges to inadequate and inconsistent funding. They issued a 52-page report — while Congress raced to avoid a partial government shutdown — and said that the FAA should be insulated from annual funding battles in Washington. US SEES SURGE IN ‘CLOSE CALLS’ WITH PLANES AT AIRPORTS, RAISING AVIATION SAFETY CONCERNS CRISIS AVERTED…FOR NOW: PILOT REVEALS WHY PLANES BARELY AVOIDING TRAGEDY AS TERRIFIED PASSENGERS SPEAK OUT The six-member group was headed by former FAA administrator Michael Huerta and included the most recent past chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board, which investigates accidents and makes safety recommendations. “The challenges facing the FAA developed over many years,” Huerta told reporters. “There are no easy, short-term fixes for many of these challenges.” New FAA Administrator Mike Whitaker said the agency will review the panel’s recommendations “to help us pursue our goal of zero serious close calls.” Whitaker was confirmed last month, ending a 19-month run during which the FAA lacked a Senate-approved leader. The FAA has about 1,000 fewer fully certified controllers than it had 11 years ago, according to the report. Hiring fell by nearly half during the pandemic, and the agency’s training center in Oklahoma City is a “bottleneck,” the group concluded. “The FAA has made limited efforts to ensure adequate air traffic controller staffing at critical air traffic control facilities,” the experts added. The worst shortages are at key facilities in New York and Florida, which led the FAA to pressure airlines to reduce flights in the New York City area this summer and fall. Controllers are also working more overtime, which “introduces risk” into the nation’s airspace and leads to more absenteeism, lower productivity and fatigue, the panel said. Sometimes supervisors fill in when they should be supervising instead, the group wrote. FAA ISSUES SAFETY ALERT AFTER AIRLINE EMPLOYEE DEATH AND INJURY The FAA’s aging technology led to an outage in January that briefly caused flights to be grounded nationwide. “The age and condition of FAA facilities and equipment are elevating system risk to unsustainable levels, even before considering losses in efficiency from outdated technology,” the panel wrote. The FAA announced the panel after several close calls including one in February in which a FedEx cargo plane cleared to land flew about 100 feet over a Southwest Airlines jet that was cleared to take off from the same runway in Austin, Texas. In August, a private plane and a Southwest jet narrowly avoided colliding in San Diego.

3 ways to increase your privacy and save money when booking travel

3 ways to increase your privacy and save money when booking travel

Booking a vacation is exciting, but it’s also expensive and sometimes induces anxiety. You book your resort, your hotel or your Airbnb, and that often requires you to provide an email address so that you can receive a confirmation after you book.  Suddenly, your email gets bombarded with other messages offering you deals and trying to convince you to spend more than you already have. However, it doesn’t have to be this way for every vacation you book.  If you use an email alias instead of your primary email address, you’ll be able to further protect your privacy, stop your inbox from flooding with messages and even save some money. Here’s why using an email alias is the way to go when it comes to booking your next vacation. CLICK HERE TO GET MY FREE CYBERGUY REPORT NEWSLETTER WITH SECURITY ALERTS AND THE LATEST BLACK FRIDAY DEALS 1. Protect your privacy with an email alias Booking a vacation online can put your privacy at risk because it could allow websites to track your online activity and then sell your data to third parties. You’ll often be required to provide an email address when booking so that you can receive confirmation after you book. Creating and using an email alias, an alternate email address that you would use instead of your primary email address, can help you avoid spam, phishing and identity theft. TAYLOR SWIFT CRUISE EXPERIENCE COMING NEXT FALL, TRAVEL AGENCY SAYS You can use a different alias for each website that you book on, which will then prevent these websites from linking your data together and creating an online profile for you that could make you a target for ads. Plus, using an alias can help keep your travel plans private from your loved ones in case you’re planning a surprise trip somewhere. The last thing you want is to ruin the surprise for that vacation you planned for six months to take your spouse on. So, start using an email alias right now to prevent that from happening. MORE: 10 WAYS TO TRAVEL LIKE A PRO FOR A WORRY-FREE TRIP 2. How to save money when booking online One thing that often happens when booking things online is that websites are able to track your data. Sometimes these websites will use information like your email address to track your online behavior, and this allows them to create a profile about you and try to send you deals later on. However, some companies will use your data to charge you higher prices for things based on your location and what you’ve been searching for so that they can get more money out of you. If you use an alias email address and a Virtual Private Network (VPN) each time you book a vacation, it will make it that much harder for any company to be able to track your online activity later on. Using a VPN will help you disguise your IP address to show an alternate location, which can also affect the prices you see online. You’ll be sure to get fair deals on everything and won’t have to worry about being overcharged because of where you live or what you’re searching for. Using an alias email address can also help you avoid falling for scam emails that claim to have amazing offers but are actually trying to trick you into spending more money. How to use an email alias to organize your travel emails and avoid spam Once those promotional emails start, it feels like they’ll never stop. Companies want to make money, and they don’t want you to forget about them, so they’ll send multiple messages per week, sometimes multiple messages per day, to make sure you’re always reminded of their services. However, you don’t have to deal with those constant messages living in your inbox all the time. You can use an email alias to keep your primary inbox clean and clutter-free. You can do this by creating a filter that sends all your messages addressed to that alias to a separate folder. Plus, you’ll know that all your travel-related emails are being put into one spot, making it that much easier to manage everything related to your vacations. You also have the option to search with the name of the alias or possibly with the search operator if you want to find something that way. Georgetown's Ed Cooley advises reporters to 'grow up' and ask tough questions after Rutgers loss

Georgetown men’s basketball coach Ed Cooley gave unsolicited advice to “young writers” at his press conference following the Hoyas’ 71-60 loss to Rutgers in Piscataway, New Jersey, on Wednesday night. Cooley and a few Hoyas players sat down for the postgame presser for nearly eight minutes after the loss and appeared annoyed over the questions he faced from reporters in the room. President Xi: China will send more giant pandas to the US

Giant panda in Washington

Chinese President Xi Jinping signaled late Wednesday that China will send new pandas to the United States, calling them “envoys of friendship between the Chinese and American peoples.” “We are ready to continue our cooperation with the United States on panda conservation, and do our best to meet the wishes of the Californians so as to deepen the friendly ties between our two peoples,” Xi said during a dinner speech with business leaders. The gesture came at the end of a day in which Xi and President Joe Biden held their first face to face meeting in a year and pledged to try to reduce tensions. Xi did not share additional details on when or where pandas might be provided but appeared to suggest the next pair of pandas are most likely to come to California, probably San Diego. 3 GIANT PANDAS LEAVE DC’S SMITHSONIAN NATIONAL ZOO FOR CHINA, ENDING 50-YEAR RUN TO CHINA AND XI, EVEN PANDAS ARE POLITICAL. AND NOW, THREE BEARS WILL EXIT THE US The bears have long been the symbol of the U.S.-China friendship since Beijing gifted a pair of pandas to the National Zoo in Washington in 1972, ahead of the normalization of bilateral relations. Later, Beijing loaned the pandas to other U.S. zoos, with proceeds going back to panda conservation programs. The National Zoo’s three giant pandas, Mei Xiang, Tian Tian and their cub Xiao Qi Ji, eight days ago began their long trip to China. After their departure, only four pandas are left in the United States, in the Atlanta Zoo. “I was told that many American people, especially children, were really reluctant to say goodbye to the pandas, and went to the zoo to see them off,” Xi said in his speech. He added that he learned the San Diego Zoo and people in California “very much look forward to welcoming pandas back.” Xi is in California to attend a summit of Indo-Pacific leaders and for his meeting with Biden. He made no mention of the pandas during his public remarks earlier in the day as he met with Biden. When bilateral relations began to sour in the past few years, members of the Chinese public started to demand the return of giant pandas. Unproven allegations that U.S. zoos mistreated the pandas, known as China’s “national treasure,” flooded China’s social media. GIANT PANDAS TO LEAVE THE NATIONAL ZOO IN D.C. FOR CHINA EARLIER THAN EXPECTED But relations showed signs of stabilization as Xi traveled to San Francisco to meet with Biden. The two men met for about four hours Wednesday at the picturesque Filoli Historic House & Garden, where they agreed to cooperate on anti-narcotics, resume high-level military communications and expand people-to-people exchanges. The National Zoo’s exchange agreement with the China Wildlife Conservation Association had been set to expire in early December and negotiations to renew or extend the deal did not produce results. The San Diego Zoo returned its pandas in 2019, and the last bear at the Memphis, Tennessee, zoo went home earlier this year.

Driver rams barrier near Israeli embassy in Tokyo, injures police officer

Driver rams barrier near Israeli embassy in Tokyo, injures police officer

A 53-year-old man reportedly has been arrested in Tokyo, Japan, on Thursday after driving his vehicle into a barrier outside the Israeli embassy there.  The crash – which police say was caused by a suspect belonging to a right-wing organization – left a police officer in his 20s with non-life-threatening injuries, according to Reuters.  Israel’s ambassador to Japan Gilad Cohen wrote in a post on X that he was “shocked by the suspected vehicular ramming attack on a police officer on guard near the Israeli embassy in Tokyo. “This matter is under investigation by the local police. I would like to express gratitude to the Japanese government and Tokyo Police for their commitment to ensuring our security,” he added. “Wishing a speedy recovery to the injured police officer.”  LIVE UPDATES: ISRAEL AT WAR WITH HAMAS  Images taken from the scene showed a small van with its front passenger side mangled after striking the barrier.  The crash happened in an area near the embassy that has been the site of a few pro-Palestinian demonstrations in recent weeks, Reuters reports.  The news agency also cited residents as saying that police have increased security in the area since the onset of the Israel-Hamas war on Oct. 7.  ISRAELI EMBASSY WORKER STABBED IN CHINA BY FOREIGN NATIONAL, AUTHORITIES SAY  The crash comes about a month after an Israeli embassy employee was stabbed outside his workplace in China, according to Chinese and Israeli authorities. The 50-year-old man, described as a family member of an Israeli diplomat, was attacked upon exiting the Beijing embassy on Oct. 13.  “The employee was transferred to hospital and he is in a stable condition,” the Israeli government said in a statement.  Beijing police have arrested a suspect in the stabbing, whom they describe as a 53-year-old foreigner.  The motive for that attack is unclear.  Fox News’ Timothy H.J. Nerozzi contributed to this report.

‘Top Gun: Maverick’ star Glen Powell addresses affair rumors with co-star Sydney Sweeney

'Top Gun: Maverick' star Glen Powell addresses affair rumors with co-star Sydney Sweeney

Glen Powell literally bared all this week in a new interview in which he also addressed the rumors he and costar Sydney Sweeney secretly dated.  “When all that stuff happened, you know, publicly, it felt disorienting and unfair,” the “Top Gun: Maverick” star told Men’s Health in an interview published Tuesday for its December issue. “But what I’m realizing now is that’s just a part of this gig now.”  The rumors began after Powell and Sweeney were cast as romantic leads in the upcoming rom-com “Anyone But You” and were fueled by them acting friendly at press appearances and him breaking up with girlfriend Gigi Paris.  Sweeney is engaged to restaurateur Jonathan Davino.  ‘TOP GUN: MAVERICK’ STAR GLEN POWELL EXPLAINS THE CRUDE ADVICE TOM CRUISE GAVE HIM  Powell told the magazine dating has become more complicated since “Top Gun: Maverick” raised him to a new level of fame, and any potential girlfriend would have to be “down for that adventure” as his career takes off.  “When the sun is shining, you gotta make hay,” he said. “And you gotta chase this while you got it. And on a romantic level, you gotta find a teammate who is down for that adventure, down for that uncertainty, down for that thing. It’s a lot to deal with. Honestly, I really try to be a great partner. When I love, I love hard. I also understand that the speed and uncertainty of my life is a very hard thing to put up with.” He said dating after “Top Gun” can be tricky.  LIKE WHAT YOU’RE READING?
