ADHD now affects 15.5 million US adults, says new CDC report

ADHD now affects 15.5 million US adults, says new CDC report

Diagnoses of ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder) are on the rise among adults in the U.S.Approximately 15.5 million adults had an ADHD diagnosis in 2023, according to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).That’s equivalent to around 6% of adults in the country, or one in 16.Around half of these diagnoses didn’t come until adulthood.ADHD AFFECTS 1 IN 9 KIDS IN US, NEW REPORT REVEALS: ‘SHAME AND STIGMA’The agency gathered this data from the National Center for Health Statistics Rapid Surveys System between October and November 2023.The study also found that adults with ADHD were more likely to be 50 or younger (84.5% versus 51.2%) and more likely to be non-Hispanic White (70.4% versus 61.4%).Those earning less than the federal poverty level were also more likely to be diagnosed (22.1% versus 12.3%), per the CDC.ADHD IN MALES VERSUS FEMALES: WHAT YOU MUST KNOW ABOUT THE DIFFERENCES IN SYMPTOMS AND TREATMENTSAround one-third of the adults with ADHD reported taking some type of stimulant medication, but more than 71% said the prescription was difficult to obtain. Around half of diagnosed adults said they had ever used telehealth to receive treatment for ADHD.The study did have some limitations, the CDC acknowledged.”First, self-reports of ADHD diagnosis might be subject to recall and reporting biases and were not validated against medical records,” the agency stated in the report. “Second, surveys with commercial online panels have low response rates and might underrepresent certain subpopulations, increasing the potential for nonresponse bias.”COVID LOCKDOWNS INCREASED ADHD RISK AMONG 10-YEAR-OLD CHILDREN, NEW STUDY FINDSA third limitation is that the sociodemographic and geographic data were collected before the survey was administered, which “could have affected the demographic distribution for some variables, such as age, education, household income and metropolitan status,” the report stated.Jonathan Alpert, a psychotherapist in Manhattan and Washington, D.C., said he has a new patient coming in each week with concerns about ADHD.”There certainly are those accurately diagnosed with ADHD and in need of medication — however, much like the GLP-1 phenomenon, there’s a shortage of medication because of all the people using it off-label or not truly in need of it,” he told Fox News Digital. There are also many patients who don’t actually have the disorder, but have been self-diagnosed through online research, according to Alpert.”This fits into a broader phenomenon in our nation where we have become too therapized, too diagnosed, and frankly, too dependent upon people like me,” he said.CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR OUR HEALTH NEWSLETTERWhen it comes to the treatment of ADHD and other mental health disorders, Alpert says, “the first line of treatment should be psychological and behavioral intervention — not necessarily medications, as they are not without side effects.”The psychotherapist also flagged electronic devices and social media as potentially contributing to the spike in diagnoses.”The very nature of these is to provide stimulation through a device where the brain is continuously engaged — and, for many people, overly engaged,” Alpert cautioned. For more Health articles, visit www.foxnews.com/health”This leads to distractibility, disorganization and the inability to complete tasks, among other hallmark features of the diagnosis.””By making significant behavioral and lifestyle changes, one can start to minimize their symptoms and make improvements, thereby lessening their reliance on medication.”

Nick Cannon admits he partied with Diddy as a teenager: ‘Got nothing to hide’

Nick Cannon admits he partied with Diddy as a teenager: ‘Got nothing to hide’

Nick Cannon is the latest celebrity opening up about attending Sean “Diddy” Combs’ parties. “I’ve even been to one when I was a kid … 16-17 [years old],” he said on “The Breakfast Club” radio show. “I live my truth. I remember standing outside … trying to get into a Puff party out here in New York,” Cannon, 44, added. DIDDY ALL SMILES IN COURT BEFORE PROSECUTORS HINT AT NEW CHARGES IN SEX TRAFFICKING CASEAlthough Cannon only confessed to innocently dancing at the parties, he noted the Diddy events he attended were not the “freak offs” allegedly thrown by the rapper, who pleaded not guilty last month to federal charges of sex trafficking, racketeering conspiracy and transportation to engage in prostitution.”The Masked Singer” host described how difficult it was to get into one of Diddy’s parties and compared it to the “One More Chance” music video by Notorious B.I.G., who was a Bad Boy artist. At the beginning of Notorious B.I.G.’s music video, a long line is seen waiting outside a crowded party. “How the ‘One More Chance’ video looked … that was real stuff out here. People standing at the door. … Bad Boy parties was official in the late ‘90s,” he added.WATCH ON FOX NATION: WHAT DIDDY DO?”Everybody gets scared to talk … because they got something to hide. … I ain’t got nothing to hide. … I was in there Harlem-shaking, doing all of that stuff. But it wasn’t — c’mon now.”Reps for Cannon did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment. LIKE WHAT YOU’RE READING? CLICK HERE FOR MORE ENTERTAINMENT NEWSThe “All That” alum’s comments come after the music mogul was arrested and charged with sex crimes.Diddy was arrested Sept. 16 and charged the following day with racketeering conspiracy; sex trafficking by force, fraud or coercion; and transportation to engage in prostitution. The rapper entered a not guilty plea hours after an indictment was unsealed detailing his alleged sex crimes.TMZ PRESENTS: THE DOWNFALL OF DIDDYAuthorities allege Diddy ran a criminal enterprise through his businesses, including Bad Boy Entertainment, Combs Enterprises and Combs Global, among others. He used “firearms, threats of violence, coercion and verbal, emotional, physical, and sexual abuse” to fulfill his sexual desires, according to the unsealed indictment obtained by Fox News Digital.Diddy and his employees would “intimidate, threaten, and lure female victims into Combs’ orbit, often under the pretense of a romantic relationship. Combs allegedly then used force, threats of force and coercion to cause victims to engage in extended sex acts with male commercial sex workers, which Combs referred to as, among other things, ‘freak offs.'” Combs often provided IV fluids to his victims after “freak offs” to help them recover from physical exertion and drug use, according to the indictment.During a court hearing Thursday, Judge Arun Subramanian scheduled Diddy’s trial for May 5. The prosecution expects the government’s case to take three weeks to lay out, while Diddy’s legal team estimated needing one week to argue the rapper’s defense. The U.S. Attorney’s Office also noted that the investigation is ongoing and pointed to the possibility of a superseding indictment, which could lengthen the trial.Fox News Digital’s Tracy Wright contributed to this report.

Abandoned dog left tied to fence before Hurricane Milton now ‘safe and sound’ with new name

Abandoned dog left tied to fence before Hurricane Milton now 'safe and sound' with new name

The bull terrier that stole hearts after it was tied to a fence and abandoned before Hurricane Milton ravaged Florida is now recovering in foster care. The update was announced by the Leon County Humane Society on Thursday. The terrier, now named Trooper after the law enforcement officers who rescued him, is currently being cared for.”We wanted to let those who have been following this story know that he is safe and sound, because we’ve been worried about him since seeing his story,” the organization said in a Facebook post.”We also want those following to know that we take animal abandonment seriously and will be closely watching his case and using his experience to educate.”MAYORKAS RIPS ‘POLITICIZED’ ATMOSPHERE OVER FEMA DISASTER RESPONSE AMID GOP CRITICISM’The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) shared heart-wrenching video of Trooper being rescued by an officer on the side of a freeway on Wednesday as Milton began to bear down on the area before making landfall as a Category 3 storm with 120 mph winds later that night. The bodycam footage shows the perspective of the officer, who walks towards Trooper and gently talks to him before removing him from the fence.”It’s OK, buddy. It’s OK,” the officer said as the scared bull terrier growled at him. Trooper was leg-deep in floodwater when he was saved. The Leon County Humane Society said that Trooper’s caretakers are still getting to know the dog and tending to him, as he arrived at the shelter in an anxious state.HOW US GOVERNMENT WILL DOLE OUT AID TO VICTIMS OF HURRICANES MILTON, HELENE”He’s incredibly stressed and still decompressing,” the animal shelter said. “Abandoning a dog like this doesn’t typically allow for an immediate bounce back to their happy selves.””Most dogs when rescued take a few days to feel safe, a few weeks to come out of their shell, and a few months to become comfortable and fall into a routine.”The video attracted the attention of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who called out the dog’s owners in a social media post.”It is cruel for anyone to leave a dog tied to a post in the middle of an oncoming storm. FL will hold anyone who mistreats pets accountable,” DeSantis wrote. The Leon County Humane Society will put Trooper up for adoption once the dog “is ready,” the organization said. It is not currently accepting applications.”We have absolutely no idea what his life looked like before he was abandoned,” the humane society explained. “We want to be sure that we know exactly what he needs before even considering adoption, so he’ll be in foster care until we feel confident he’s ready for the next phase of life, and that his future will be kind to him.”Fox News Digital’s Louis Casiano contributed to this report.

Michigan Catholic bishops condemn Whitmer’s Doritos video stunt as offensive

Michigan Catholic bishops condemn Whitmer’s Doritos video stunt as offensive

Catholic officials in the state of Michigan, including its seven diocesan bishops, condemned Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s, D-Minn., recent viral video that many people viewed as her mocking Holy Communion. Published to feminist author and filmmaker Liz Plank’s Instagram page on Thursday, the clip depicted Whitmer wearing a Harris-Walz hat and putting a Doritos chip into Plank’s mouth as the media figure knelt down on the floor.”It is not just distasteful or ‘strange;’ it is an all-too-familiar example of an elected official mocking religious persons and their practices,” Michigan Catholic Conference (MCC) President and CEO Paul A. Long said in a statement representing the views of Catholic leaders in the state.MICHIGAN GOV FEEDS KNEELING FEMALE PODCAST HOST DORITOS WHILE WEARING A HARRIS-WALZ HATWhitmer and Plank’s viral social media clip was meant to advocate for Vice President Kamala Harris’ polices ahead of the presidential election. It came from Whitmer’s appearance on Plank’s “Chip Chat” podcast that was published Thursday on YouTube. The caption for Plank’s video read, “If he won’t, Gretchen Whitmer will. Chips aren’t just delicious, the CHIPS Act is a game-changer for U.S. tech and manufacturing, boosting domestic production of semiconductors to reduce reliance on foreign suppliers! Donald Trump would put that at risk.”In its statement, the Catholic conference blasted the stunt. “A video posted yesterday to social media platform Instagram featuring Governor Gretchen Whitmer has prompted the state’s Catholic bishops conference to express profound disappointment and offense taken at the actions in the video.”It continued, “In the skit, Whitmer lays a Dorito chip on the extended tongue of a woman, who as the camera pans out is shown to be kneeling in the same manner as one would when receiving Communion on the tongue. The governor then stares expressionless into the camera.”Additionally, conservatives on social media accused the governor and media figure of mocking the Christian sacrament.Former Trump advisor Tim Murtaugh, for example, posted, “Let’s be clear what’s happening in this video. Gov. Whitmer of Michigan is pretending to give communion to an leftist podcaster on her knees, using a Dorito as the Eucharist while wearing a Harris-Walz hat. Do they want ZERO Catholic votes for Harris?”HARRIS CAMPAIGN DISTANCES ITSELF FROM ’60 MINUTES’ EDIT: ‘WE DO NOT CONTROL CBS’S PRODUCTION DECISIONS’When asked for comment, a political aide for Whitmer previously told Fox News Digital, “The governor’s social media is well known for infusing her communications with pop culture.” “This popular trend has been used by countless people, including Billie Eilish, Kylie Jenner, and Stephen Colbert, and the fact that people are paying attention to a video promoting President Biden’s CHIPS Act proves it’s working,” they said. MCC President Long insisted that Whitmer’s video “goes further than the viral online trend that inspired it, specifically imitating the posture and gestures of Catholics receiving the Holy Eucharist, in which we believe that Jesus Christ is truly present.”He added that even if the governor denies that offending Christians was her intention, “it has had an offensive impact.”The MCC statement continued, noting how the video reflects a wider decline in respect for religion. “People of this state and across the country have grown tired of and continue to express their alarm at the bar of civility and respect toward people of faith lowering by the day. Michigan is a religiously diverse state and includes thriving communities of Christian, Jewish, and Muslim believers.””The time is now for those in public office, their handlers, and strategists to return a level of respect, civility, and appreciation for those who have found peace and fulfillment in life by worshiping God and serving their neighbor,” in concluded. The governor’s office did not immediately reply to Fox News Digital’s most recent request for comment on the MCC’s statement.

Chicago spent $80K to renovate office for first lady Johnson as city faces billion dollar budget shortfall

Chicago spent $80K to renovate office for first lady Johnson as city faces billion dollar budget shortfall

Invoices and receipts from Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson’s administration have raised new questions about extravagant spending as the city faces a nearly billion dollar budget shortfall.Documents uncovered by local news station NBC 5 revealed that in the grip of fiscal crisis, the city spent more than $80,000 to redecorate and renovate an office in the Chicago Cultural Center for first lady Stacie Johnson. “The invoices and receipts, obtained by NBC 5 Investigates through a series of Freedom of Information Act requests, show that work order requests began in February and continued through August of this year to renovate and redecorate Room 306 in the Chicago Cultural Center,” the report said. Electricians, carpenters and painters on the city’s payroll were contracted for the work, according to an invoice from the city’s Fleet and Facility Management department, also called 2FM, NBC 5 reported. The workers accrued more than 350 hours of labor at a cost of over $25,000.CHICAGO PROSECUTOR DECLINES TO CHARGE ‘DANGEROUS’ COLUMBIAN MIGRANT IN SHOOTING DEATH OF 17-YEAR-OLDAnother invoice reportedly shows the city paid more than $43,000 for furniture, including a $2,200 office chair and a $4,400 desk labeled the “First Lady’s Desk” on the document. The city spent another $4,600 on a desk for a staffer and more than $8,300 on two club chairs, according to the outlet. The invoice was dated Aug. 13, with a Sept. 12 due date, NBC 5 reported.Mayor Johnson’s office did not respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment. CHICAGO MAYOR COMPARES VIEWPOINT OF THOSE WHO DISAGREE WITH HIM ABOUT SCHOOL SPENDING TO SLAVERYConfronted with the invoices and asked to defend the city’s spending, Johnson told NBC 5, “So, the Cultural Center has always been a location for dignitaries; every first lady has had office space there. Renovations for my office or any other office is standard procedure. Our commitment to invest in people is still to invest in people.”The mayor pushed back against follow-up questions about the optics of excessive spending at a time when his administration is considering layoffs of city workers to cut costs.ENTIRE CHICAGO SCHOOL BOARD TO RESIGN OVER TEACHERS UNION DISPUTE WITH DEM MAYOR: ‘DEEPLY ALARMING’”The purchase of a desk is not going to change the financial structural damage that has been in place for a very long time. So this is why we ask – and I mean this respectfully – we ask far more profound questions than that. We ask, how do we make sure that the structural damage that’s been created over the course of decades – we reroute the rivers, if you will, to make sure that we get to the places where there is dry land. And that’s what we are doing,” he said. When NBC 5 pressed the issue, Johnson criticized the outlet’s questions. “So I’ve been mayor for 17 months, and you have a question of how I feel about optics? Just go back on review the tape. If I were to allow my leadership to be based on someone’s opinion of me, it would be a derelict of duty. I never question my position to invest in people. I don’t do this for optics; I do this to transform lives.” The mayor said he is more focused on the optics of hiring young people for summer jobs, building affordable housing and ensuring that schools have counselors and social workers, as well as investing in Chicago’s South and West sides. But Johnson still has not put forward a plan to close the city’s projected $982 million budget gap.
