Nick Saban on Tua Tagovailoa’s potential retirement after repeated brain injuries: ‘I hate it’

Nick Saban on Tua Tagovailoa's potential retirement after repeated brain injuries: 'I hate it'

Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa’s NFL future remains uncertain after he sustained his third concussion in three years in Week 2. Tagovailoa was placed on injured reserve Sept. 17 after he did not clear the NFL’s concussion protocols. Pro athlete peers and media pundits have called on Tagovailoa to retire for the sake of his health and life. Now, his college coach has given insight into his discussions with the quarterback over his NFL future. Former Alabama head coach Nick Saban spoke about Tagovailoa’s recovery and future during an interview with Pat McAfee Friday. “I talked to Tua. He seemed to be (good),” Saban said. “I talked to him right afterwards. You know, he’s good. He’s always positive and, you know, very enthusiastic. Terry (Saban’s wife) talks to his mom a lot. You know, they want prayers from everybody out there to try to help him, you know, get well. He really wants to play. Whether he can ever play or get the opportunity to again, I guess that’s a medical decision somebody has to make.” CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COMSaban revealed Tagovailoa’s situation and concerns for his brain health and career have had an emotional effect on the former coach. “But, you know, Tua is the best. I mean, and I hate it, I hate it for him, because he’s such a good person who does everything the right way. He’s the only player that I’ve ever had that if you ask him, ‘How are you doing today?’ He says, ‘Great, Coach. Thanks for asking.’ I mean, every time. The guy is just phenomenal. You love to see people like that, you know, have success and not have this kind of adversity, but hopefully he’ll be able to overcome it.”On Sept. 12, Tagovailoa was hit by Bills safety Damar Hamlin during a game against the Buffalo Bills, collapsed to the turf in pain and showed signs of a traumatic brain injury, according to multiple experts. Tagovailoa’s history of brain injuries includes two in the span of one month in the 2022 season. Tagovailoa’s arms froze in what neurologists refer to as the “fencing response,” a sign of head trauma.TUA TAGOVAILOA’S RETIREMENT COULD COST DOLPHINS $124 MILLION AFTER GM RELIED ON JIUJITSU TO END HIS CONCUSSIONSHis third concussion prompted cries from former NFL players to retire, including former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant, Super Bowl champion kicker Lawrence Tynes of the New York Giants and Broncos Hall of Famer and current ESPN host Shannon Sharpe. It is possible the team’s trainers and doctors will eventually clear Tagovailoa to return to the field. If this happens, he would need to make the decision whether to keep playing. There is also a possibility doctors won’t clear him to return. If Tagovailoa is not able to pass concussion protocols for a third time in his NFL career, he could be forced to retire. If he retires, the Dolphins would have to pay out a huge chunk of his $212.4 million contract. The contract, signed in July by Dolphins general manager Chris Grier, includes $167 million in guarantees. Tagovailoa has already made $43 million of that salary, and if he’s medically forced into retirement, he has a right to collect the remaining $124 million. However, if he’s cleared to return and chooses to retire anyway, he would forfeit that guaranteed money. He and the team would have to come to a settlement in that case. The contract was signed well after his three previous concussions and even after he admitted he considered retirement the prior offseason. But Grier said during a team press conference Feb. 28 he wasn’t concerned about the quarterback’s concussion history. Grier cited offseason jiujitsu training as the remedy for the quarterback’s concussion concerns. “The one thing Tua did was he attacked the offseason wanting to prove that he could stay healthy. Spending the time learning to fall, with the jiujitsu and stuff, it paid off for him,” he said. Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel said he and the team were also “comfortable” with jiujitsu being the solution to preventing their quarterback’s concussions. “It’s something that we had various ideas, some of which I won’t repeat because they weren’t as good as that one. We were willing to go to any length,” McDaniel said during a team press conference Feb. 28. McDaniel told reporters this week the quarterback will meet with brain health experts during the team’s bye week because he still hasn’t cleared concussion protocol. When asked if the team has been advised to hold Tagovailoa out longer even after he’s been cleared to return, McDaniel said he has received “nothing negative” from experts.Follow Fox News Digital’s sports coverage on X, and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.

NYC pursuing thousands of hotel rooms to house migrants amid multibillion-dollar costs: report

NYC pursuing thousands of hotel rooms to house migrants amid multibillion-dollar costs: report

New York City reportedly wants 14,000 hotel rooms to house migrants through next year as the sanctuary city continues to spend billions on the fallout from the border crisis. The New York Post reported the city’s use of hotels to house migrants will continue despite a significant drop in migrant encounters at the southern border, and the Department of Homeless Services is seeking a contract with hotels to provide a total of 14,000 rooms to shelter migrants. The Post reported that spending on housing over a three-year period will surpass $2.3 billion, with most of that spent on rent for hotels. Spending on the migrant crisis is expected exceed $5 billion, and Mayor Eric Adams has previously said costs could balloon to over $10 billion by the end of next fiscal year. Previous estimates had put that number even higher.NEW YORK CITY MIGRANT CRISIS COSTS EXPECTED TO EXCEED $5B IN TWO-YEAR PERIOD – DOUBLE TO $10B BY 2025At an average of $352 per night for at least 36,939 households, the city has previously projected it will spend $4.75 billion providing shelter, food, health care and education to the influx of migrants during the 2025 fiscal year, according to the current forecast by the city’s online asylum seeker funding tracker. In August, the city announced two new contracts totaling $40 million for contractors to service migrants at hotels used as emergency shelters. As numbers surged at the border in 2021 and 2022, tens of thousands of migrants traveled to major blue cities like New York City, Chicago and Philadelphia. They were aided in 2022 when Texas Gov. Greg Abbott began bussing migrants straight to those cities as a way to relieve the pressure on the border state. He chose sanctuary cities — cities that limit cooperation with federal immigration enforcement — because he said they encouraged the crisis. There were scenes of hundreds of migrants camped outside the Roosevelt Hotel during the height of the crisis. New York City officials now say over 218,000 migrants have received services in NYC since 2022.MAN STABBED AT NYC MIGRANT ENCAMPMENT BY RANDALL’S ISLAND SHELTER WEEKS AFTER DEADLY SHOOTING NEARBYOfficials say they have helped complete more than 72,000 applications for work permits, temporary protected status and asylum. The city has also bought 47,000 tickets to help migrants go to other parts of the country. CLICK HERE FOR MORE IMMIGRATION COVERAGEAt the peak of the crisis, the city was taking in an average of 4,000 migrants per week. But that dropped into the hundreds in recent months as the crisis at the border abated after a presidential proclamation from President Biden that limited asylum claims. The Post reported more than 700 new migrants arrived in the city last week. This week, the city announced it would be closing a massive tent shelter on Randall’s Island. Officials said the number of asylum seekers in city shelters has dropped for 14 straight weeks and now is at the lowest point in over a year.Fox News’ Danielle Wallace contributed to this report.

Doug Emhoff doesn’t deny report he slapped ex-girlfriend outside overseas movie event

Doug Emhoff doesn't deny report he slapped ex-girlfriend outside overseas movie event

Second gentleman Douglas Emhoff did not explicitly deny allegations — made to the Daily Mail by several unnamed sources — that he once slapped an ex-girlfriend and also hired a “trophy secretary” at his Los Angeles law firm.Emhoff called the tabloid stories “a distraction” when responding to a question during a Friday interview with “Morning Joe” co-host Joe Scarborough on MSNBC. The allegations could not be independently verified by Fox News Digital.”We don’t have time to be pissed off. We don’t have time to focus on it. It’s designed to try to get us off our game,” Emhoff said, before pivoting to a warning about a potential second term for former President Trump. “We understand the stakes. We understand the responsibility. We understand what is necessary. Our very country. Our future.”HARRIS VOTERS DEFEND DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENTIAL NOMINEE ON ISRAEL-GAZA CONFLICT: ‘HE’S MARRIED TO A JEWISH GUY’Trump recently told the Daily Wire that if he were subject to the same allegations as Emhoff, it would be “the greatest story in the last five years” in the media.Earlier this month, an unnamed representative for Emhoff told Semafor the report that he slapped a former girlfriend during a 2012 trip to the Cannes Film Festival is “untrue.”HARRIS SUPPORTERS SOUND OFF ON HER BORDER BLUEPRINT”Any suggestion that he would or has ever hit a woman is false,” the representative said. The Daily Mail’s exclusive story at the time quoted three unidentified sources who claim Emhoff slapped his then-girlfriend while the couple waited in a valet line following an event in Nice, France, in 2012. The alleged altercation was purportedly sparked when the woman — identified only by the pseudonym “Jane,” and described as a successful New York attorney — flirted with a valet, according to the article. The Harris campaign, the Office of the Vice President and a representative for Emhoff’s ex-wife, Kerstin Emhoff, did not comment despite repeated requests from Fox News. Several media outlets, including Semafor, noted they had been unable to match the Daily Mail’s reporting, and legacy media companies such as The New York Times have yet to report on the claims. CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APPThe Daily Mail’s article hinged on the recollections of three people described as being friends of “Jane.” The outlet said its sources requested anonymity due to fear of retaliation from Emhoff. The three friends reportedly provided the outlet with a photo of the pair when they were still a couple, as well as itineraries and correspondence between Emhoff and “Jane” to substantiate that they made the trip to France in May 2012.One of the sources is described by the Daily Mail as a female New York attorney who learned about the alleged incident from “Jane.””He hauled up and slapped her so hard she spun around,” the source is quoted as saying. “She said she was in utter shock. She was so furious, she slapped him on one side, and then on the other cheek with the other hand.”Fox News’ Emma Colton contributed to this report.

Trump announces ‘Operation Aurora’ to target illegal immigrant gang members in Colorado

Trump announces 'Operation Aurora' to target illegal immigrant gang members in Colorado

Former President Trump is expected to detail “Operation Aurora” during his rally in Colorado Friday afternoon — a program at the federal level that would remove illegal immigrant members of the dangerous transnational Venezuelan gang, Tren de Aragua, a senior Trump campaign official told Fox News Digital. Trump is expected to hold a rally on Friday in Aurora, Colorado, where he will formally propose the removal program. The program is expected to invoke the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 to target and dismantle “every illegal migrant criminal network operating on American soil,” the official said.BLOODTHIRSTY VENEZUELAN STREET GANG SPARKS FEAR IN US AMID MIGRANT SURGE: WHAT TO KNOWThe announcement comes after members of Tren de Aragua last month were caught on camera, armed with rifles and handguns, as they
forced their way into an apartment in Aurora and threatened the tenant at gunpoint. Shortly after, they opened fire on a 25-year-old man outside the building, fatally shooting him. Of the three identified, all three are illegal aliens who were in Border Patrol custody but later released into the U.S.The Trump campaign also points to the murder of 12-year-old Jocelyn Nungaray, who was kidnapped, tied up, and assaulted for two hours under a bridge before she was murdered by two of the gang members. TREN DE ARAGUA GANG MEMBER, ILLEGAL VENEZUELAN MIGRANT, ARRESTED IN HOUSTONThe official said just this week, police arrested over a dozen members of Tren de Aragua who had taken over yet another apartment complex in San Antonio, Texas and terrorized its residents.

Pointing to newly published data from ICE, the official said there are now 13,099 illegal alien convicted murderers at large in the United States “under Border Czar Kamala Harris.”

Undercooked bear meat at North Carolina barbecue leaves 10 sickened, says CDC report

Undercooked bear meat at North Carolina barbecue leaves 10 sickened, says CDC report

Ten people, including a 10-year-old child, fell ill last year after eating undercooked bear meat at a North Carolina barbecue, a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention revealed. In November 2023, 10 unidentified people experienced flu-like symptoms and facial swelling after an investigation by the North Carolina Division of Public Health linked the patients to an earlier gathering in which undercooked bear meat was served. It was determined the illnesses were the result of a trichinellosis outbreak.BEAR MEAT FOR DINNER? FOLLOW THESE STEPS TO PREVENT PARASITIC INFECTION, CDC SAYSTrichinellosis is a “rare parasitic disease” – with only about 15 confirmed cases each year – often associated with the consumption of wild game meat, according to the CDC.”These parasites infect animals such as bears, cougars, walruses, foxes, wild boars and domestic pigs,” the Mayo Clinic said on its website. “You get the infection by eating the immature form of the roundworm (larvae) in raw or undercooked meat.”Of the 35 attendees at the gathering, 22 reported eating undercooked bear meat — while 10 of them, the youngest of whom was 10 years old, showed symptoms of being sickened by trichinellosis, the CDC noted in its report.Among the 10 patients, nine had facial swelling, six had muscle pain and four had documented fever, the CDC said.CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR OUR LIFESTYLE NEWSLETTER”When humans eat raw or undercooked meat containing trichinella larvae, the larvae grow into adult worms in the small intestine,” the Mayo Clinic detailed. “This takes several weeks. The adult worms produce larvae that travel through the bloodstream to different parts of the body. They then bury themselves in muscle tissue.”Although the report didn’t specify what type of bear meat was served, black bears are common hosts for trichinella larvae, the CDC said.Cooking game meat to a safe internal temperature – 165° Fahrenheit – will kill the parasites and prevent infection, the CDC said.Earlier this year, six people became sick from eating undercooked bear meat that was served at a family reunion in South Dakota, Fox News Digital previously reported.A 2022 trichinellosis outbreak associated with undercooked bear meat harvested from Canada resulted in six cases, according to the CDC, including two people who only ate vegetables and were infected by cross-contamination.For more Lifestyle articles, visit www.foxnews.com/lifestyleFox News Digital contacted the North Carolina Division of Public Health and CDC for additional comment.
