Chicago mayor compares viewpoint of those who disagree with him about school spending to slavery

Chicago mayor compares viewpoint of those who disagree with him about school spending to slavery

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, on Monday, compared the viewpoint of his critics who oppose school spending to that of the confederacy when it came to freeing slaves.”When our people wanted to be liberated and emancipated in this country, the argument was, ‘you can’t free Black people because it would be too expensive,’” Johnson said. “They said it would be fiscally irresponsible for this country to liberate Black people.”During a press conference at a South Side church on Monday, Johnson touted that when he ran for mayor, he promised to transform the city’s public education system.ENTIRE CHICAGO SCHOOL BOARD TO RESIGN OVER TEACHERS UNION DISPUTE WITH DEM MAYOR: ‘DEEPLY ALARMING’”I’m a man of my word, and that means bold leadership in a moment that doesn’t nibble around the edges and look for incremental gain,” he said. “Our people in this city are tired of political leaders that want the status quo to nibble around the edges, and then when children don’t get what they deserve, they blame the very communities that they’ve divested in. Not on my watch.”Johnson said the status quo and mistakes of the past that left students behind are not going to continue.”And then the so-called experts, the so-called fiscally responsible stewards are making the same argument. When our people wanted to be liberated and emancipated in this country, the argument was, ‘you can’t free Black people because it would be too expensive,’” Johnson said. “They said it would be fiscally irresponsible for this country to liberate Black people.”And now you have detractors making the same argument of the confederacy when it comes to public education in this system,” he added. “These are the people who package these gimmicks, lied to our people, stole money from our people, refuse to pay into the pension system, left the taxpayers with the bill, and for me to fix it.”CHICAGO SCHOOL BOARD APPROVES MEASURE TO DO AWAY WITH ‘RANKING’ SCHOOLS AFTER ‘LONGSTANDING STRUCTURAL RACISM’ Johnson vowed to build a world-class school district rather than leave students behind and fire teachers and staff.”The city leaders have long resisted investing in our children. I am no longer going to accept the status quo,” he said. “We have schools right now who do not have dollars for buses to take their kids to sporting events. We have a system right now that can’t adequately bus children to the very spaces that they say they believe in, and so that is why I was elected to fight and fight.”During the press conference, Johnson introduced six new nominees for the school board, noting he would name a seventh at a later date.STUDENTS LEFT BEHIND AS CHICAGO HIGH SCHOOL SUFFERS FROM STAFFING ISSUES, TEACHER ABSENCES: REPORT The mayor referred to his six new school board nominees as members, though he said they are still being vetted as a formality. Once the vetting is complete, Johnson’s nominees could remain on the board when it triples in size in January and changes to more of a hybrid model that includes 11 mayoral appointees and 10 elected members.”I’m confident that these new candidates will work to lead CPS into the world-class school system that our children deserve,” Johnson said, referring to Chicago Public Schools. “I will continue to nominate Chicagoans who are dedicated to meeting the needs of our students.”Johnson has tried to oust the district’s CEO, Pedro Martinez, who was named to his position in 2021 by Johnson’s predecessor, then-Mayor Lori Lightfoot. As a former Chicago Teachers Union organizer, Johnson has clashed with Martinez over the best way to close gaps in the district’s nearly $10 billion budget. Martinez has refused to resign from his post, saying the district needs stability. On Friday, all seven board members announced they would resign from their posts by the end of the month.Johnson handpicked all the outgoing members in 2023, just months after he took office. The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Video resurfaces showing FEMA prioritizing equity over helping greatest number of people in disaster relief

Video resurfaces showing FEMA prioritizing equity over helping greatest number of people in disaster relief

As FEMA fends off allegations about its disaster relief funding, a 2023 webinar hosted by the agency has resurfaced depicting panelists discussing the need to reshape FEMA’s policies to emphasize “equity” over those that benefit the greatest number of people. The agency held the webinar in March 2023, and one the following month, featuring panelists from faith-based organizations, private non-profits, local and state governments, and others who work in disaster preparedness and relief. Emergency Management Specialist Tyler Atkins, who moderated the discussion, lamented that disasters compound the disadvantages experienced by the LGBTQ community. “LGBTQIA people, and people who have been disadvantaged are already struggling. They already have their own things to deal with. So you add a disaster on top of that, it’s just compounding on itself,” Atkins said.  FEMA HEAD DENIES AGENCY IS SHORT ON MONEY FOR DISASTER RELIEF BECAUSE FUNDS WENT TO ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTSMaggie Jarry of Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), noted that there is a shift underway in “emergency management from utilitarian principles where everything is designed for the greatest good, for the greatest amount of people, to disaster equity.” A second webinar was held the following month, focusing on “Response and Recovery Considerations” for LGBTQIA+ survivors of disasters. The talk came on the heels of a growing number of calls to emphasize “equity” in FEMA’s disaster response efforts. The year prior, in 2022, Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts pushed for a new “equity adviser” at FEMA who would ensure “underserved communities” have a fair shot at receiving federal disaster aid. KJP SLAMMED AFTER HURRICANE HELENE OVER MIXED MESSAGES ON WHETHER FEMA RESOURCES USED FOR MIGRANTSThe progressive said the nation’s “lowest income communities” and “communities of color” were the ones most impacted by “extreme conditions.””We have to address this in a way that is about giving resources based on equity, understanding that we fight for equality, but also need to fight for equity,” Warren said. A month after those comments, Harris said the Biden administration would take “equity” into account when dividing up disaster relief as Hurricane Ian was ripping up the eastern coastline. Echoing Warren’s comments, Harris told attendees at the Democratic National Committee’s Women’s Leadership Forum it was “our lowest income communities and our communities of color that are most impacted by these extreme conditions.” Last November, FEMA released “Achieving Equitable Recovery: A Post-Disaster Guide for Local Officials and Leaders.” The toolkit served as a guide for local officials and leaders “to help rebuild their communities equitably, with the needs of different populations in mind.” BOONE, NC CHURCH BECOMES HELENE RECOVERY HUB, ONE OF DOZENS ACROSS SOUTHEAST: ‘GOD WILL CARRY US THROUGH THIS’The guide was organized around eight goals intended to help leaders “design and execute a more inclusive and equitable recovery planning process.” A FEMA spokesperson told Fox News Digital there has “been a lot of misinformation about FEMA’s assistance programs which is having a negative impact on our ability to help people.””FEMA provides assistance to disaster survivors regardless of race, religion, sexual orientation, identity, or background and we want to encourage as many people to apply for help as possible,” the spokesperson said. “FEMA and its dedicated public servants’ commitment to serving all communities immediately and effectively remains unwavering, and we will continue to fulfill our mission with integrity and fairness.”Meanwhile, the unearthed webinar from March 2023 comes after Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas faced a barrage of criticism for claiming that FEMA is out of disaster funds. “We are expecting another hurricane hitting. We do not have the funds,” Mayorkas said on Oct. 2. “FEMA does not have the funds to make it through the season and what is imminent.” However, DHS’ Inspector General released a report saying FEMA was sitting on more than $8 billion in untapped, unspent funds. Mayorkas’ comments came before Hurricane Milton was upgraded to a monster Category 5 storm, triggering evacuations in Florida. A state still reeling, like much of the Southeast, from Hurricane Helene. Helene has killed more than 220 people in six states. The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Oklahoma AG supports new trial for death row inmate who has had 3 ‘last meals’

Oklahoma AG supports new trial for death row inmate who has had 3 'last meals'

An Oklahoma man whose execution by the state has been postponed multiple times, including three close calls in which he consumed his “last meals,” has found an unlikely ally in his effort to vacate his murder conviction.Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond, a Republican, contends that prosecutors hid evidence in Richard Glossip’s trial for the 1997 murder-for-hire killing of his boss. Glossip’s lawyers on Wednesday will argue before the U.S. Supreme Court for the justices to grant him a new trial. “If he is executed, I believe that it will be a travesty of justice,” Drummond said in an interview with Reuters. BIPARTISAN GROUP OF TEXAS LAWMAKERS DEMAND CONVICTED KILLER’S EXECUTION BE HALTED: ‘SERIOUS DOUBTS’Glossip, now 61, was convicted in 1998 of the killing, but an appeals court overturned that conviction based on ineffective defense counsel. After a second trial in 2004, he was found guilty of first-degree murder. “After a comprehensive independent investigation, I believe it is clear that prosecutors committed a Brady violation by not sharing potentially exculpatory evidence with the defendant and violated Napue [Napue v. Illinois] by knowingly allowing false testimony that prevented the defendant from receiving due process,” Drummond said in a statement to Fox News Digital. Glossip has maintained his innocence in the 1997 killing in Oklahoma City of his former boss, motel owner Barry Van Treese. Another man, Justin Sneed, admitted robbing and killing Van Treese but testified he only did so after Glossip promised to pay him $10,000. SOUTH CAROLINA INMATE DIES BY LETHAL INJECTION, ENDING STATE’S 13-YEAR PAUSE ON EXECUTIONSSneed received a life sentence in exchange for his testimony and was the key witness against Glossip.”Oklahomans deserve to have absolute faith that the death penalty is administered fairly and with certainty,” said Drummond. “I don’t believe that justice is served by executing a man based on the testimony of a compromised witness.”Drummond doesn’t believe Glossip is innocent but said he didn’t receive a fair trial. Among his concerns are that prosecutors knew Sneed lied on the witness stand about his psychiatric condition and his reason for taking the mood-stabilizing drug lithium. The chief prosecutor has also cited a box of evidence in the case that was destroyed, including motel receipts, a shower curtain and masking tape that Glossip’s attorney, Don Knight, said could have potentially proven Glossip’s innocence.CALIFORNIA MAFIA MEMBER ON DEATH ROW FATALLY BEATEN BY OTHER INMATES IN PRISONIn the years since being sentenced to death, Glossip’s execution date has been changed nine times, he has been fed three “last meals,” and he has been married twice. Fox News Digital has reached out to the Oklahoma County District Attorney’s Office. Among those who remain convinced of Glossip’s guilt is former Oklahoma County District Attorney David Prater, who reviewed Glossip’s case multiple times and who urged the state’s Pardon and Parole Board to reject clemency for him even though the original case was prosecuted by his predecessors.”I went through that case more than once and looked at everything that was there, and there was nothing that caused me to have any question about the integrity of that conviction and that death sentence,” Prater told the AP.A decision is expected by early summer. The Associated Press contributed to this report.
