Virginia Tech coach Brent Pry rips referees over Hail Mary touchdown reversal: ‘Don’t see how you overturn it’

Virginia Tech coach Brent Pry rips referees over Hail Mary touchdown reversal: 'Don't see how you overturn it'

The Atlantic Coast Conference has been under fire in the days after the controversial ending of a game between two conference foes. The Miami Hurricanes and Virginia Tech Hokies took turns celebrating what each team believed at the time was a victory. But college football games can only have one winner. A chaotic final play resulted in heartbreak for Virginia Tech when referees overturned a Hail Mary touchdown that allowed Miami to survive. This week, Virginia Tech coach Brent Pry became the latest critic of the ACC.CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COMPry argued game officials failed to provide an explanation in the moments after their call or in the locker room after Friday’s game. The coach revealed he did not receive an explanation about the reversal until the ACC released what he described as a “confusing, at best” statement early Saturday morning.VIRGINIA TECH PLAYER BLASTS ACC AFTER REVERSED WALK-OFF HAIL MARY: ‘I WANNA SEE CONSEQUENCES’”I was finally contacted Monday morning, which was a solicited contact, by the head of officials for the ACC,” Pry said Tuesday. “I asked for an explanation and the video that they viewed that merited overturning the call with indisputable evidence. The explanation was that there was a loose ball that was touched by a Miami defender who was out of bounds. The video showed nothing new, nothing that none of us hadn’t seen already. The words used with me were ‘interpretation’ and ‘hard to find,’ which, to me, neither one aligns with indisputable.”Pry also asserted that there was an insufficient amount of evidence to support the decision to overturn the initial call. “I watched the video that they watched. If it was ruled a catch, I don’t see how you overturn it. There’s no evidence. If it was ruled not a catch, I don’t see how you overturn it. You can’t see enough to tell.”The league “determined that the loose ball was touched by a Miami player while he was out of bounds.””During the review process of the last play of the Virginia Tech at Miami game, it was determined that the loose ball was touched by a Miami player while he was out of bounds, which makes it an incomplete pass and immediately ends the play,” the statement from the ACC said.Virginia Tech quarterback Kyron Drones threw the ball to receiver Da’Quan Felton as the final seconds ticked off the clock during the game Sept. 27. Felton appeared to complete the catch, but the referees later ruled the pass incomplete.Virginia Tech will look to rebound this weekend when it travels to California for a matchup with Stanford. Miami will also be in the Golden State Saturday for a game against the California Golden Bears.Miami enters Week 6 with a 5-0 record and climbed the No. 8 spot in the latest AP Top 25 rankings.Follow Fox News Digital’s sports coverage on X, and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.

Over 1.7M migrants who could pose national security risk arrived in US during Biden admin: report

FIRST ON FOX: More than 1.7 million migrants have been encountered at the U.S. border and have come from countries that officials believe pose a national security threat to the United States, according to a new House report. The report by the House Judiciary Committee says the number of “special interest aliens” (SIAs) came from a congressional staff briefing by Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officials. SIAs are those who have come from countries identified by the U.S. government as having conditions that promote or protect terrorism or potentially pose some sort of national security threat to the U.S.In 2019, the DHS defined an SIA as “a non-U.S. person who, based on an analysis of travel patterns, potentially poses a national security risk to the United States or its interests. Often such individuals or groups are employing travel patterns known or evaluated to possibly have a nexus to terrorism.”HARRIS VISITS CRUCIAL BORDER STATE AS IMMIGRATION RECORD SPARKS SCRUTINY: A TIMELINE”DHS analysis includes an examination of travel patterns, points of origin, and/or travel segments that are tied to current assessments of national and international threat environments,” it said. The House report says that there are currently 26 special interest countries, including Afghanistan, Cuba, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Nigeria, Syria and Turkey. The agency recently removed 11 countries from the list and added 12 others, including North Korea, China and Venezuela. The U.S. has seen numerous Chinese and Venezuelan nationals in particular, with nearly 300,000 Venezuelans encountered at the border this fiscal year so far and more than 73,000 Chinese nationals.Border Patrol sources have previously told Fox News they have extreme concerns about people coming across from special interest countries, given they have little to no way to vet them. Unless they have committed a crime in the U.S. or are on a federal watch list, agents have no way of knowing their criminal history because their countries do not share data with the U.S., so there is nothing to match their name against when authorities run their fingerprints.ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS WITH ‘TERRORISM TIES’ WILL CONTINUE TO EXPLOIT BORDER, HOMELAND SECURITY REPORT WARNS The committee said that DHS told the committee that being a national from a special interest country does not affect a migrant’s admissibility into the U.S., although officials have previously stressed that all migrants are vetted using a multi-layered process that includes biographic and biometric information. As an example of the risks that can be posed by the release of SIA migrants, the committee pointed to the case of Mohammad Kharwin, who was released into the U.S. and later on bond by an immigration judge despite potential terror ties. The DHS located and rearrested him two weeks later. DHS has since agreed to a voluntary departure of Kharwin from the U.S., and he is currently in ICE custody.”Congress must take seriously its efforts to secure the border and stop the weakening of U.S. national security,” the report said.”As the case of Mohammad Kharwin exemplifies, the Biden-Harris Administration has sown chaos at America’s borders and allowed potential national security and counterintelligence threats to enter the United States—and, at least in Kharwin’s case, be released into the country multiple times,” it said. The report found that there were around 98,000 SIA encounters in FY 21, which went up to 482,705 in FY 22, then 597,058 in FY 23 and 531,768 in FY 24 so far. Of those, most were encountered at the southern border, with 95,705 southwest border encounters of special interest aliens in fiscal year 2021; 465,664 in 2022; 566,079 in 2023; and 504,215 in 2024 so far. The increase in SIAs has come amid an ongoing debate about the southern border and how to tackle it. The Biden administration has pointed to a sharp drop in encounters since June, which it attributes to a June presidential proclamation which limited the number of asylum entries into the U.S. According to those numbers, encounters between ports of entry have decreased by more than 50%, and DHS has removed or returned more than 131,000 individuals to more than 140 countries, including operating more than 400 international repatriation flights. “In that period, DHS has almost tripled the percentage of noncitizens processed for Expedited Removal, and the percentage of releases pending immigration court proceedings is down nearly half. Total removals and returns over the past year exceed removals and returns in any fiscal year since 2010 and a majority of all southwest border encounters during the past three fiscal years resulted in a removal, return, or expulsion,” Customs and Border Protection said in a release last month. It has also called for the passage of a bipartisan Senate bill that would increase funding to border agencies, including for detention beds, and would also place limits on migrant entries into the U.S. Conservatives have said it would codify high levels of illegal immigration.Vice President Kamala Harris visited the border in Arizona last week and hammered former President Donald Trump for his lack of support for the bipartisan bill. However, Republicans have noted that the House passed a sweeping border security bill last year, but the Senate has yet to pass that either.Fox News’ Bill Melugin contributed to this report.Get the latest updates from the 2024 campaign trail, exclusive interviews and more at our Fox News Digital election hub.

The Harpole Treasure includes one of the most valuable pieces of ancient jewelry found in Britain

The Harpole Treasure includes one of the most valuable pieces of ancient jewelry found in Britain

The Harpole Treasure refers to a collection of relics that was discovered in Harpole near Northampton in 2022. Among the treasures discovered was a unique gold necklace that archaeologists called “the most ornate of its kind ever found,” according to The Museum of London Archaeology’s (MOLA) July 2022 news release. The necklace was one of many finds that came out of an ancient burial site. The gorgeous necklace dates back between 630 and 670 A.D., according to MOLA.The unique piece features many different pendants, which includes beads, glass pendants and Roman coins. 12-YEAR-OLD BOY STUMBLES UPON STUNNING ANCIENT FIND WHILE WALKING DOG IN ENGLAND: ‘RELATIVELY RARE’At the center of the necklace sits a rectangular pendant, decorated with a cross motif. While pendants in female burials aren’t particularly uncommon, according to the press release, the variety of pendants adds to this particular find’s uniqueness.”Suddenly we had a rubbish pit that turned into a burial beyond burials,” Paul Thompson, MOLA project manager, said, per the BBC in 2023. “It’s a once in a lifetime experience to be working on something like this,” he went on to say. ANCIENT ROMAN GOLD AND SILVER COINS DISCOVERED WITH METAL DETECTOR MAKE IMPRESSIVE SHOWING AT AUCTIONOther finds unearthed from the ancient burial site were two decorated pots, as well as a shallow copper dish and a large ornate cross. The necklace, paired with the other grave goods that were found, label the find as “one of the most spectacular female Early Medieval burials ever discovered in the UK,” per MOLA’s press release. “It wasn’t just one or two items. That would have been incredible in its own,” Thompson told The Washington Post in 2022. “We have here the only complete example of this type of necklace excavated in modern archaeological standards.… It’s an asymmetrical set-out of the gold coins, and the precious stones mounted in gold, which we haven’t seen before.”IRISH FARMER FINDS NEAR 60-POUND SLAB OF ANCIENT BOG BUTTER ON HIS LAND BY ‘PURE LUCK’Though the identity of the woman who was buried with these goods remains an untold story, archaeologists do believe that the person was of high status, possibly an early Christian leader.  “Christianity provided a way for women to gain independence and power in their own right, by enabling them to run monastic houses, so we see an increase in elite women using Christianity as a means of increasing their status,” Emma Brownlee, an archaeologist at the University of Cambridge, told The Washington Post in 2022. “In this burial, we’re seeing a particularly fine example of that process.”In December 2023, MOLA released a second news release about the incredible find, sharing that the 30 pendants and beads making up the necklace had been cleaned and, at the time of writing, continued to be examined by specialists to learn more about their origins. There have also been further developments regarding the human remains at the site. When the grave goods, including the necklace, were found in 2022, it was believed that only a few fragments of the woman’s teeth remained, according to the press release, but further investigation has led to the finding of more fragments, including the upper part of a femur, some vertebrae, part of a hand and wrist, plus part of the pelvic bone, per the press release.
