CNN host clashes with GOP lawmaker over Trump saying he’ll protect women whether they ‘like it or not’

CNN host clashes with GOP lawmaker over Trump saying he'll protect women whether they 'like it or not'

CNN anchor John Berman grilled Rep. Byron Donalds, R-Fla., over former President Trump’s recent comments that he will protect women whether they “like it or not.”The two debated the nature of the comments, with Berman suggesting they were sexist, while Donalds accused him of glossing over the fact that Trump is promising to protect innocent Americans from criminal illegal immigrants.  “John, that is grossly inaccurate what you just played,” Donalds said on “CNN News Central” Thursday morning. “He was talking about the tragedy at our southern border that led to the death of Jocelyn Nungaray.”TRUMP TRASHES BIDEN’S INSULT IN A GARBAGE TRUCKBerman opened the conversation by playing a brief snippet from the former president’s rally in Wisconsin Wednesday, where he wore a high visibility vest onstage after posing for photos riding shotgun in garbage truck earlier that afternoon. At one point during rally, Trump joked about being told by his advisors not to portray himself as a protector of women.”They said, ‘Sir, I just think it’s inappropriate for you to say.’ I pay these guys a lot of money; can you believe it?” Trump said, adding, “I said, ‘Well, I’m going to do it whether the women like it or not. I’m going to protect them. I’m going to protect them from migrants coming in. I’m going to protect them from foreign countries that want to hit us with missiles and lots of other things.’”Berman played a snippet of the moment, though he cut off the portion of the clip referring to illegal immigrants and other foreign adversaries. He then asked Donalds, “Alright, why is Donald Trump telling women he will do things whether they like it or not?”Donalds slammed Berman’s framing, first calling him out for ignoring the context and then noting how Trump was just making “a joke” about ignoring political advice.”And then he was just telling a joke – really, he was telling a joke about how some of the staff said, ‘No don’t say you would protect women because they would take it out of context’ – obviously what CNN is doing right now,” he said, slamming Berman’s network.CLICK HERE FOR MORE COVERAGE OF MEDIA AND CULTUREThe CNN host then tried to speak over him, saying, “No, no, no. No, no, no, no, no. You have the exact right conte – you have the exact right context here, Congressman.” Still, Donalds pressed on, stressing how Trump was talking about protecting women and children from “violent illegal alien criminals who have raped and who have murdered women in the United States.”Berman again admitted that Donalds had the right context, but wanted him to answer whether the language Trump used was inappropriate or not. “His advisers were telling him not to use that type of language and say, ‘I‘m going to be your protector.’ And that is the context in that speech.”Donalds seemed exasperated with the approach, telling the host, “John, you need to stop.”Berman continued, “And then he said, ‘I‘m going to protect them – the women – whether they like it or not.’””And I‘m not the only one asking you about this language,” the anchor continued, as Donalds again said, “John, you need to stop.”BIDEN CALLS TRUMP SUPPORTERS ‘GARBAGE’ DURING HARRIS CAMPAIGN EVENT AS VP PROMISES UNITY AT ELLIPSE RALLYBerman forced the issue and played a clip of former GOP presidential candidate Nikki Haley’s recent comments that Trump’s campaign is employing too much “bromance, masculinity stuff” in its campaign messaging that will “make women uncomfortable.”After CNN played the clip, Berman asked, “So you’re telling me there’s no concern for Nikki Haley, or – clearly as Donald Trump said – from people close to him, his campaign, about the type of language he’s using?”Donalds replied, “John, listen I love the selective editing this morning.  You guys are conflating two very separate things. Let‘s get to the core of the message that you played at the beginning: Donald Trump was talking about protecting women and children in our country from the ravages of illegal immigration.””You see it now,” he continued, “We all know the headlines. Jocelyn Nungaray, Rachel Morin, Laken Riley – these are women who were brutalized, killed, raped… And so Donald Trump is going to protect women in our country. He’s going to protect women in our country.”Berman sidestepped Donalds point and again spoke over him, asking, “Why say – why say whether they like it or not?” He repeated the question multiple times while Donalds attempted to explain the importance of protecting women by securing the border. The lawmaker replied, “This is why the American people frankly are frustrated with media because you guys play games, you take things out of context. You don‘t explain them clearly, and you want to get caught up in semantics.”

‘Tipping the scales’: House GOP leaders rip ActBlue after Dem fundraising giant hit with subpoena

'Tipping the scales': House GOP leaders rip ActBlue after Dem fundraising giant hit with subpoena

Top House Republicans are coalescing behind the House Administration Committee’s subpoena of Democratic fundraising giant ActBlue.Republicans have accused the company of having insufficient donor verification standards. Committee Chair Bryan Steil, R-Wis., has argued that the site is vulnerable to fraudulent and illegal foreign donations, though ActBlue has said it “rigorously protects donors’ security.””ActBlue has a lot of explaining to do, and Chairman Steil is right to demand answers on these very serious allegations of foreign funds being funneled through the platform,” Rep. Richard Hudson, R-N.C., chairman of House Republicans’ campaign arm, told Fox News Digital.”Just as we must protect the right to vote for American citizens, we must ensure our elections are free from foreign financial interference.”FORMER REPUBLICAN US SENATOR ENDORSES KAMALA HARRIS, SAYS ELECTION OFFERS ‘STARK CHOICE’House GOP Conference Chairwoman Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., also credited Steil and pointed out that his accusations come amid reports that China and Iran are trying to influence the election.”Malign foreign actors are attempting to hijack American elections through the Far Left Democrat fundraising platform ActBlue by tipping the scales in favor of Kamala Harris and Congressional Democrats,” Stefanik said. “It has never been more critical to ensure American elections are free from foreign manipulation.”ActBlue did not require a card verification value (CVV) to be input for donations until recently, prompting a flurry of concern from Republican lawmakers and some GOP state attorneys general.Steil sent multiple letters and requests for information to the platform, which has insisted it holds donor security to a high standard.’ILLEGAL, UNCONSTITUTIONAL AND VOID’: GEORGIA JUDGE STRIKES DOWN NEW ELECTION RULES AFTER LEGAL FIGHTSA spokesperson for House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., said he was “supportive” of the subpoena, adding, “Only American citizens should be participants in our elections, and this investigation is critical to ensure that our elections remain secure and shielded from foreign actors.”Steil issued a subpoena Wednesday to ActBlue for “documents and communications related to ActBlue’s donor verification policies and the potential for foreign actors, primarily from Iran, Russia, Venezuela, and China to use ActBlue to launder illicit money into U.S. political campaigns.”ActBlue responded to Steil in a statement, “ActBlue has received Chairman Steil’s latest inquiry and will respond to address the continued inaccuracies and misrepresentations about our platform, as we have done previously. We rigorously protect donors’ security and maintain strict anti-fraud compliance practices. We have zero tolerance for fraud on our platform.”SPEAKER JOHNSON RIPS ‘LACK OF LEADERSHIP’ IN BIDEN ADMIN’S HELENE RESPONSE: ‘ALARMED AND DISAPPOINTED’But fellow Republicans on his committee are standing firm that the subpoena was necessary.Rep. Laurel Lee, R-Fla., the chair of the panel’s subcommittee on elections, told Fox News Digital, “In our investigation so far, we have found that loopholes in ActBlue’s insufficient security protocols may be exploited by bad actors, potentially leading to countries like China, Russia and Venezuela donating to campaigns in the names of Americans without their consent.””With the general election just five days away, Americans need to have confidence that our elections are secure and that there is no foul play involved,” she said.Committee member Rep. Greg Murphy, R-N.C., said, “The subpoena is critical for the committee to ensure federal campaign finance laws are not being violated, including laundering money into campaign coffers through inadequate security protections.”Meanwhile, Rep. Stephanie Bice, R-Okla., told Fox News Digital, “Like the chairman, I have been concerned by the inadequate security protocols at ActBlue, who haven’t required CVV verification and allow for pre-paid cards for political donations.”The accusations come at a critical time, with Election Day less than a week out.The platform denied all GOP allegations of wrongdoing in a statement to Fox News before Steil’s subpoena, “These false claims about ActBlue have been discredited repeatedly by campaign finance experts. ActBlue protects donors’ information by maintaining a robust security program and fraud prevention measures, often beyond what is required by law.”Get the latest updates from the 2024 campaign trail, exclusive interviews and more at our Fox News Digital election hub.

Tim Walz allegedly told high school football player struggling with crime and alcohol to keep playing

Tim Walz allegedly told high school football player struggling with crime and alcohol to keep playing

Minnesota Governor and vice presidential candidate Tim Walz’s high school football coaching career was the subject of a recent article in The Ringer. One of Walz’s former players on the 1998 Mankato West team shared details of his interactions with Walz while dealing with alcoholism and issues with the law. Former Mankato West linebacker Dan Clement told The Ringer that he began to experiment with alcohol when he was in high school. Then, the summer between his junior and senior year, Clement said he was arrested multiple times for underage drinking. Clement had a suspension from football to begin his final high school season and said he decided “I’m just not going to play at all.”But Clement said Walz repeatedly approached him in the hallways that year and told the teenager, “We need you.””He knew I was struggling,” Clement told the outlet, adding that Walz told him, “I don’t care about that other stuff.”CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COMClement said, after Walz’s intervention, that he eventually returned to the team for the second half of the season. However, Clement said he did not get sober until a full decade after Walz pushed him to return to the field for his final season, The Ringer reported. Still, Clement thanked Walz for his impact on his life. “The caring attention he gave, that positive support can pull you through really dark times in your life,” Clement said, adding that he told Walz,”I’m leaning on you. I’m trusting you here. I think partying is a better idea. You don’t think so. And I’m going to trust you on that.’”And he was right. I was wrong. And later in life, when I continued to do that, when I continued to trust other people who love me, then it led my life in this beautiful direction. Just like it did back then.”Fox News Digital has reached out to the Harris-Walz campaign and the Minnesota governor’s office for comment, but has not received a response at the time of publication.Walz’s short tenure as an assistant football coach has been a talking point for the Harris campaign since he was announced as the running mate for Harris on Aug. 7. TIM WALZ SAYS HE KEPT A SHOTGUN IN HIS CAR TO HUNT PHEASANTS AFTER FOOTBALL PRACTICE The campaign has made multiple attempts to tie the Minnesota governor’s candidacy to his stint as the assistant coach of the Mankato West High School football team in Minnesota in the 1990s. During Walz’s tenure as an assistant on the staff, the team won the state championship in 1999. On Sunday, Walz did a live stream of him playing Madden NFL with Democrat congressional representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. But the event was mocked by football fans after Walz sent a since-deleted post on X that read, “AOC can run a mean pick-6.”When Walz attended a game between Mankato West and rival Mankato East in early October, pro-Palestine protesters were seen at the venue to coincide with Walz’s appearance, seen in posts by Minneapolis Star-Tribune reporter J.P. Lawrence. Walz brought out members of Mankato West’s 1999 state championship team during his speech at the Democratic National Convention on Aug. 21, when he formally accepted the nomination. During that speech, Richard Grenell, former U.S. ambassador to Germany, critiqued the display in a post on X. “He was the Assistant Coach not the Coach,” Grenell wrote. When Walz attended a Sept. 28 game between Minnesota and Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan, fans waited outside afterwards and gave him a harsh farewell. Several in attendance booed him, with another fan even yelling, “Get out of here!”Walz, despite never having coached past the high school level or even as a head coach in high school, compared his background as a football coach to that of Alabama Republican Sen. Tommy Tuberville, who served as the head coach at four different NCAA Power 5 football programs from 1995 to 2016. Tuberville led Ole Miss, Auburn, Texas Tech and Cincinnati as head coach and even won an SEC Championship with Auburn in 2004. “I feel like one of my roles in this now is to be the anti-Tommy Tuberville, to show that football coaches are not the dumbest people,” Walz said during a fundraiser event in Boston in early August.Follow Fox News Digital’s sports coverage on X, and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.

Iran and Russia close in on deal as Tehran threatens revenge against Israel

Iran and Russia close in on deal as Tehran threatens revenge against Israel

Iran and Russia are closing in on a deal that will bolster their defensive cooperation and strengthen military ties at a time when Western nations are increasingly concerned about regional wars in Europe and the Middle East. “The treaty on a comprehensive strategic partnership between Russia and Iran that is being prepared will become a serious factor in strengthening Russian-Iranian relations,” Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Thursday, according to a Reuters report. The foreign minister, who said the treaty would be signed “in the near future,” claimed that the deal will “confirm” both Iran and Russia’s “interests of peace and security at the regional and global levels.”PENTAGON SAYS IRAN SUPPLYING RUSSIA WITH BALLISTIC MISSILESThe details of the treaty remain unclear and Lavrov did not expand on what form this defensive partnership would take.A similar agreement signed between Russia and North Korea earlier this year was followed by Pyongyang’s decision to send some 10,000 soldiers to its warring neighbor, which may potentially be deployed to fight in Ukraine, according to concerns signaled by the Pentagon. But given that Iran already supplies Russia with defensive aid to propel its brutal war in Ukraine, it’s not only the repercussions this partnership could have for the war in Europe that concern Western security officials.Russian President Vladimir Putin, who once shared a solid relationship with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, has not appeared to be overtly involved in the unfolding fight in the Middle East, unlike Russia’s top adversary, the U.S.But a report by the Wall Street Journal earlier this month found that Moscow has been providing the Houthi terrorist group with satellite data to assist it in its repeated attacks on Western ships in the Red Sea. According to the report, the information was passed from Russia to “members of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC)… embedded with the Houthis in Yemen.” PENTAGON THREATENS NO NEW LIMITS ON UKRAINE WEAPONS IF NORTH KOREA JOINS RUSSIA’S WARRussia has also increasingly called on Israel to show “restraint” when it comes to escalating tensions in the Middle East as it launched an incursion into Lebanon and struck Iran – which directly funds and arms the terrorist organizations, including Hamas, Hezbollah and the Houthis, warring with Jerusalem.Tehran has once again threatened Jerusalem with a retaliatory hit after Israel launched aerial strikes on Friday. The series of tit-for-tat attacks continue as Israel pushes to eliminate Hamas in the Gaza Strip and Hezbollah in Lebanon. Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi, chief of the general staff of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), on Tuesday responded to these threats and said, “If Iran makes the mistake of launching another missile barrage at Israel, we will once again know how to reach Iran.”Halevi warned Israel will continue to escalate its attack “capabilities and locations” previously “set aside” if Iran responds with another strike on the Jewish state.”We did this for a very simple reason, because we may be required to [strike] again. This event is not over, we are still in the midst of it,” he said while speaking from the Ramon Airbase in Israel. “I say this to you: we are highly prepared across all fronts.”
