Royal family’s favorite American foods and ‘humble’ hot dog’s important role in history revealed

Royal family's favorite American foods and 'humble' hot dog's important role in history revealed

The royal family has historically enjoyed trying food in the United States during their visits to the country, a new book reveals – and one meal in particular might have changed the course of history, according to its author. In his new book “Cooking & the Crown: Royal Recipes from Queen Victoria to King Charles III,” Tom Parker Bowles details the food-related adventures of the royal family over the last two centuries.Parker Bowles, son of Queen Camilla, is an award-winning food writer and restaurant critic. ‘PASTA QUEEN’ FOOD LOVER REVEALS DRAMATIC JOURNEY TO CHEF, MOM AND AUTHOR”I think when the monarchs travel, they try all the food,” Parker Bowles told Fox News Digital in a Zoom interview from his hotel room in New York City. (See the video at the top of this article.)”Why wouldn’t you, if you come to America? It’s got some of the greatest regional food in the world,” he said. Perhaps the most consequential American dish consumed by a British royal were the hot dogs shared by King George VI and President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Parker Bowles told Fox News Digital. The two dined on the American classic in Hyde Park, New York, in June 1939, Parker Bowles wrote in his book. “The King and Queen found themselves sitting on folding chairs at Hyde Park, eating hot dogs served on silver platters,” he wrote. “The King seemed a little nonplussed. ‘What should I do?’ he asked the President. ‘Put it in your mouth and keep chewing until you finish it,’ came the smiling response.” After the hot dogs were consumed, however, talk turned to the growing threat of Nazi Germany. CHICAGO-STYLE HOT DOG, ‘INTEGRAL’ TO WINDY CITY, IS SERVED WITH TOMATO, NOT KETCHUPAt the time, the thought of entering another war overseas was not popular, Parker Bowles said.”Then they went upstairs, and they talked” about the war, he said. “Really, it was the power of food. That’s what fascinates me – the power of food and something as humble as a hot dog,” said Parker Bowles. In those discussions, Roosevelt pledged his support to the British Atlantic convoys. The United States would eventually provide support to the United Kingdom and other Allied powers prior to its official entry into World War II in Dec. 1941. “If America hadn’t come into the Second World War, well, God only knows what would have happened,” said Parker Bowles. “So it was a very, very important hot dog, however you look at it.” Other visits to the United States were a lot less consequential in world history – but still had some surprising food moments. SURPRISING SECRETS OF THE PERFECT SANDWICH, FROM A COOKBOOK AUTHOR AND SOCIAL MEDIA STARDuring one visit to the United States, former President Ronald Reagan and his wife Nancy treated Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip to “a full sort of Californian Tex-Mex feast,” Parker Bowles said. “I wouldn’t have thought [Mexican food] was something that the late queen had seen a lot – you know, sort of enchiladas and refried beans,” he said. “Delicious food.” The Reagans maintained a friendship with Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, Parker Bowles noted, “united by their love of horses.” Prince Philip had another hobby that some may find surprising, noted Parker Bowles: grilling and barbecuing. CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR OUR LIFESTYLE NEWSLETTER”He was a great food lover and watched all the food TV programs and loved cookbooks and loved cooking,” Parker Bowles said.Prince Philip even went as far as to design his own grill, Parker Bowles said, calling it “a masterpiece.” The prince “created this incredible multi-level grill with different heat levels – he has a whole trailer that he’s designed to go behind the Land Rover,” he said. Mark Flanagan, the royal chef, thought highly of Prince Philip’s cooking skills as well, Parker Bowles said. For more Lifestyle articles, visit www.foxnews.com/lifestyle”[Flanagan] told me as well that [Prince Philip] would come through the kitchen and choose his own cuts and make his own marinades and was a really, really good chef,” Parker Bowles said.

Flight attendant’s viral video shows pilots landing in heavy rainstorm

Flight attendant's viral video shows pilots landing in heavy rainstorm

It was a dark and stormy night when a video filmed from the cockpit of an airplane emerged on social media, showing the conditions pilots face when landing in heavy rain.”This was the day I learned that planes have wiper blades,” said TikToker @damailufta, who shared her front-row seat behind the pilots in the cockpit as their windshield wipers worked to clear the view for landing at Sola Airport in Stavanger, Norway.Mina Farmen Bertheussen, 30, who said she’s a Norwegian Airlines flight attendant based in Oslo, wasn’t working the night she filmed the video; she was a passenger on her own airline to visit family and requested a seat in the cockpit for part of the flight.HOT TRAVEL TREND HAS PEOPLE HUNTING FOR VINTAGE TREASURES ON VACATION”It was a short 40-minute flight, but it was raining so much,” Bertheussen told Fox News Digital. “It wasn’t really a bumpy flight. But I found it so interesting and wanted to film it because you couldn’t see anything.”The seldom-seen glimpse of what goes on inside the cockpit during rough weather bewildered viewers, and the video garnered more than 3.5 million views. “These guys are magicians,” someone commented. “Talk about trusting your instruments,” another viewer commented. As the plane approached for landing, the pilots can be heard counting down the number of meters the plane was from the ground, which Bertheussen says should debunk the idea that planes land on autopilot.AIRLINE PASSENGER SHARES PHOTO OF ‘RECLINED’ SEAT DEBACLE: ‘DUDE IS IN MY LAP'”You can actually hear it during the video,” she said. “Around 300 to 400 meters, you can hear a loud alarm. That’s them turning off the auto autopilot. So from there, they are completely flying the plane themselves. Autopilot is only used in certain conditions.”Many TikTok viewers appeared to be as amazed by the average-looking windshield wipers as well as the smooth landing in unfavorable conditions.”Those windshield wipers were fighting for their lives,” one person commented. “These wiper blades gave serious anxiety vibes,” someone else wrote.FLIGHT PASSENGERS ARE MAKING ‘THE GATE ESCAPE’ IN ATTEMPT TO AVOID ‘POOR AIRPORT EXPERIENCES'”Wipers stole the show,” another viewer commented.Bertheussen said her cockpit perspective confirmed what she already knew about the training and professionalism of the pilots.”You kind of get to see that they don’t only rely on their eyes,” she said. “They also rely on their [instruments] to land. The pilots are really in control. They know exactly what they are doing.”Flying during turbulent weather can be unnerving for passengers, but Bertheussen said, in her experience, there’s no reason to worry.”The video looks very dramatic, but they are in full control,” she said. “It wasn’t really dramatic at all. It’s normal for the pilots, and they have a lot of training. It’s the same for us as flight attendants. When it’s bumpy or when there’s turbulence, we’re not scared because we have training, and we know what is safe.” For more Lifestyle articles, visit www.foxnews.com/lifestyle.This isn’t the first time Bertheussen has offered a unique, behind-the-scenes view of a job most people will never experience first-hand.CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR OUR LIFESTYLE NEWSLETTERDuring the COVID-19 pandemic, she made a career as a crane operator and posted a video of herself working in a small, glass-enclosed cabin high above a city.”When you show a video from this kind of job, it’s something people don’t see as much, or they don’t know what’s going on in there,” she said. “So it was probably interesting for people to see.”Fox News Digital reached out to Norwegian Airlines for comment.

Jen Psaki says Democrats are lost in the ‘wilderness’ without a ‘clear leader’ after Trump’s victory

Jen Psaki says Democrats are lost in the 'wilderness' without a 'clear leader' after Trump's victory

MSNBC host Jen Psaki said the Democratic Party is lost in the “wilderness” and without a leader after Kamala Harris’ stunning defeat to President-elect Donald Trump. In an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press” Sunday, Psaki was asked how Democrats regain their footing and begin to “chart their path forward” after losing the White House, Senate and House of Representatives. “Look, I think Democrats are in the wilderness, as you just said before, there is no clear leader of the party. Joe Biden is going to be out of office shortly. Kamala Harris just lost the election. There are a lot of governors and other people who might emerge maybe that we don’t know about yet, but there is no clear leader of the party right now,” she said.JEN PSAKI HITS BACK AT LEFT’S RACIST BLAME GAME FOR HARRIS’ LOSS: ‘THAT’S NOT HOW DEMOCRACY WORKS’The former White House press secretary said Harris’ loss offers an opportunity for emerging Democratic leaders to “seize the mantle” and take charge of a party still reeling from a series of devastating election defeats.”That, to me is an opportunity because people have to decide. Nobody’s given it, right. You seize the mantle, or you don’t,” Psaki said. “Are you going to be the person who decides who’s the right person to stand up against Trump? Or are you going to be the person who brings the country together? Are you going to be the person who talks about the economy and in ways that people understand? There are lots of ways to do it. I don’t know who’s going to emerge, but that’s the moment we’re in right now.”PSAKI ADMITS DEMS MADE A MISTAKE BY TRYING TO REACH NEVER-TRUMP VOTERS AND IGNORING DISAFFECTED DEMOCRATSDemocrats continue to point fingers and play the blame game in their post-election analysis of why Harris lost. In a recent appearance on MSNBC, Psaki blamed the party for over-relying on “never-Trump” Republicans, arguing that they should’ve made more of an effort to reach disaffected Democratic voters. She also blamed Democrats for a “huge misread” on how important the abortion issue was to millions of Americans in the country who ended up voting for Trump and urged her party to be “sober about” the reality that many voters who traditionally supported Democrats didn’t turn out to support Harris on Election Day.

Chargers stave off Bengals’ comeback in epic Sunday night thriller

Chargers stave off Bengals' comeback in epic Sunday night thriller

What looked to be a Los Angeles Chargers beatdown on the Cincinnati Bengals at SoFi Stadium on “Sunday Night Football” turned into a thriller in the second half. But the Chargers were able to take down the Bengals, 34-27, behind J.K. Dobbins’ 29-yard touchdown, his second of the game. The game was deadlocked at 27 apiece when Justin Herbert got the ball with just 45 seconds left to play, and he found Ladd McConkey on two amazing passes for a total 55 yards to get into Bengals territory. CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COMIt seemed like the Chargers would just run it out for a game-winning field goal, but Dobbins found space and exploited it for the score. With just seconds left to play, Joe Burrow, who battled back in the second half to make this a game, heaved a Hail Mary to Tee Higgins, but Derwin James swatted it away for the win.It was the Bengals who got on the board first in this game with a field goal, but it was truly all Chargers in the first half as Herbert got rolling quickly. 2025 NFL MOCK DRAFT: TRAVIS HUNTER, SHEDEUR SANDERS HAVE BUFFS SITTING PRETTYOn the team’s second drive of the game, he needed just five plays to go 70 yards as he threw an absolute dime to tight end Will Dissly down the seam for a 29-yard touchdown to make it a 7-3 game after the extra point. After another red zone trip for Cincinnati ended with a field goal, Herbert wowed the Chargers faithful with an off-balance dot to Quentin Johnston in the end zone for a 26-yard score. That came after finding Johnston for 22 yards and Dissly for 20 earlier in the drive. With the Bengals going three-and-out, head coach Jim Harbaugh decided to look for the early kill shot in this game, as he went for it on fourth-and-goal from the Bengals’ one-yard line and J.K. Dobbins found the end zone to go up 21-6. A Cameron Dicker chip shot field goal gave Los Angeles a 24-6 lead at halftime, and the Bengals looked completely dejected. But we saw their fight in the second half, as they knew this was a must-win game to keep their playoff hopes in a good spot. Bengals head coach Zac Taylor said at halftime his team needed to find the end zone when they got down in Chargers territory, and that’s exactly what they got on fourth-and-goal when Ja’Marr Chase finally got man coverage and Burrow slung a perfect slant ball to him for the score. It brought the Bengals within two touchdowns with more than enough time to get back into the game, as long as the defense could get stops. And that’s exactly what happened, starting with a three-and-out that Burrow used to his advantage. On another fourth-down play, Burrow got the look he wanted when Tee Higgins, returning to the fold after missing some time with injury, ran through his defenders and sprung open for a 42-yard touchdown. Just like that, the Bengals were back in this game. Herbert and the Chargers needed to respond, as momentum was clearly shifting in this one. But on a rush play after scrambling out of the pocket, Herbert fumbled and it was scooped up by the Bengals. It was the first turnover of the game for either team, and once again, Burrow knew just what to do with it. In almost backyard football fashion, Burrow directed Chase midway through a play and his star receiver obliged, turning to his left in the end zone and Burrow put it on him for a 17-yard score, Chase’s second of the game. But Burrow couldn’t find the right plays to give his team the edge in the win, which has been a head-scratcher all season long for this Bengals squad. Follow Fox News Digital’s sports coverage on X, and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.
