WaPo staffer unsure paper can recover as Bezos-owned outlet sheds 200,000 subscribers over endorsement fiasco

WaPo staffer unsure paper can recover as Bezos-owned outlet sheds 200,000 subscribers over endorsement fiasco

The Washington Post is reportedly paying the price with its liberal readers after the Bezos-owned paper announced it would not be making an endorsement in the 2024 presidential race, which has sent shockwaves in its newsroom. NPR reported Monday that The Post has shed more than a whopping 200,000 subscribers since it revealed its editorial board would not formally endorse Vice President Kamala Harris after it had planned to do so. According to NPR, it marks roughly an 8% loss of The Post’s 2.5 million paid subscribers. WASHINGTON POST REPORTS LIBERALS ARE CANCELING SUBSCRIPTIONS OVER PAPER’S DECISION NOT TO ENDORSE VP HARRISA veteran Washington Post insider tells Fox News Digital that the NPR report was “the talk of the newsroom.””People are outraged at such a boneheaded decision,” the insider said. “Just recently, [Washington Post CEO and publisher Will] Lewis’ team was bragging about stemming subscription losses and how we had ‘green shoots’ of a gain of 4,000 subscribers so far this year. That’s been wiped out in a nanosecond.” “It’s a steep hole to climb out of, and it’s only going to get worse once the election is over and more people cancel,” the source added. When asked whether the Post can climb out of the hole or if the damage is done, they replied “No idea. A lot of damage has been done.”A spokesperson for The Washington Post declined to comment. WASHINGTON POST UNION, STAFFERS REVOLT OVER DECISION NOT TO ENDORSE A PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE, BLAME BEZOSA trio of Post reporters wrote Sunday that positive internal momentum at their place of employment “came to a halt” on Friday when Lewis declared the “Democracy Dies in Darkness” paper would not endorse a presidential candidate. In the days since, an onslaught of readers posted on social media about canceling subscriptions in protest, prompting Washington Post reporters to fret over how many subscribers would ultimately walk away. “A cancellation movement swept through social networks. Instead of using an internal analytics tool to check traffic to their own stories, some Post journalists used it to chart the soaring number of subscribers visiting the customer account page that allows them to cancel their subscriptions,” Post reporters Manuel Roig-Franzia, Herb Scribner and Laura Wagner wrote in a piece headlined “For The Post, more outrage from readers who say they’ve canceled.” “On social media, sharing screenshots of Post subscription cancellation confirmations became more than just a thing,” the Post reporters continued. “It was a political statement primarily coming from the American left, enraged by reports in The Post and elsewhere that the newspaper’s editorial writers had drafted an endorsement of the Democratic nominee.” BEFORE NON-ENDORSEMENT DECISION, WASHINGTON POST CALLED TRUMP ‘DREADFUL’ AND ‘WORST PRESIDENT OF MODERN TIMES’The Post also noted that Lewis has “sought to tamp down speculation” that the paper’s billionaire owner, Jeff Bezos, made the decision in order to help former President Trump. However, The Post previously reported that Bezos was behind the move “according to four people who were briefed on the decision.”Lewis has claimed the decision to end presidential endorsements “was made entirely internally and neither campaign nor candidate was given a heads up or consulted,” and has told concerned staffers that “it is the wrong thing for an independent newspaper to tell readers how to vote in a presidential election.”The Post announced on Friday that it would not be offering an endorsement in the upcoming presidential election or any future one, in what publisher Lewis said was a “returning to our roots.” An endorsement of Harris was reportedly drafted and ready to publish before it was suddenly shelved. The paper, which has been reliably hostile to former President Trump for years, has endorsed a Democrat for president in every election since 1976, except for when it skipped one in 1988. Fox News’ Brian Flood contributed to this report.

Harris-Trump showdown: The Vice President to give closing argument with White House as backdrop

Harris-Trump showdown: The Vice President to give closing argument with White House as backdrop

Vice President Kamala Harris brings her presidential campaign to the nation’s capital on Tuesday, as she delivers what’s being billed as her closing argument address to American voters. With one week until Election Day, the vice president and Democratic presidential nominee will call on Americans to ‘turn the page’ on former President Trump, the Republican nominee. And a senior Harris campaign adviser also said the vice president, in what’s being touted as an optimistic and hopeful speech, will pledge to always put country and common ground above party to achieve results for all Americans.WHY TRUMP IS MAKING LAST MINUTE STOPS IN THESE TWO BLUE-LEANING STATESAccording to her campaign, Harris plans to argue that Trump – who four years later continues to charge that his 2020 election defeat to President Biden was due to an election rigged with massive voter fraud – is all-consumed by his grievances and desire for retribution that he’s not focused on the needs of Americans. It’s an argument the vice president has been spotlighting in recent days. WHAT THE LATEST FOX NEWS POWER RANKING IN THE PRESIDENTIAL RACE SHOW”He is focused and actually fixated on his grievances, on himself and on dividing our country, and it is not in any way something that will strengthen the American family, the American worker,” Harris told reporters on Monday. And at a large rally in suburban Atlanta, Georgia last Thursday, the vice president asked supporters to “just imagine the Oval Office in three months.  Picture it in your mind….It’s either Donald Trump in there, stewing — stewing over his enemies list, or me — working for you, checking off my to-do list.”The vice president is expected to expand on that contrast in her speech.Trump, who has been indicted multiple times and made history as the first current or former president convicted in a criminal case, has regularly threatened during the 2024 campaign that if he returned to the White House, he would prosecute his political foes. And both Biden and Harris – who replaced her boss atop the Democrats’ 2024 ticket in July after Biden ended his re-election bid – have repeatedly warned voters that Trump poses a threat to democracy if he’s re-elected.”Our democracy is at stake,” the president said last week. “Think about it. Think about what would happen if Donald Trump wins this election.”Harris will deliver her address from the Ellipse, a large park located just south of the White House and north of the National Mall. The Harris campaign points to two symbolic reasons for the Ellipse as the location of the vice president’s address.First, the backdrop is the White House, where either Harris or Trump will soon succeed Biden in the Oval Office. And second, Trump headlined a large rally of supporters at the Ellipse on Jan 6, 2021. Many of those who attended Trump’s rally then marched to the U.S. Capital and joined other protesters in storming the building in an attempt to upend congressional certification of Biden’s 2020 election victory over Trump. The Harris campaign says the vice president will also use her address to spotlight her plans and priorities for the country going forward. And they say at the top of that list is offering specifics on how she’ll bring down costs and put more money in the pockets of average Americans.Trump gave his closing argument at a large rally Sunday at New York City’s Madison Square Garden, where the former president’s message was partially outshined by controversial comments from speakers during the pre-show that grabbed national headlines.Harris’ address comes as the latest national polls indicate a margin-of-error race between her and Trump. It’s the same story with the most recent surveys in the seven crucial battleground states whose razor-thin margins decided Biden’s 2020 victory over Trump and will likely determine if Harris or Trump wins the 2024 election.Get the latest updates from the 2024 campaign trail, exclusive interviews and more at our Fox News Digital election hub.

Harris-Trump showdown: Margin-of-error presidential race with one week until Election Day

Harris-Trump showdown: Margin-of-error presidential race with one week until Election Day

With one week to go until Election Day, it remains a coin-flip White House race between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Trump.Facing a margin-of-error race in both the national polls and the swing state surveys, both the vice president and the former president, their running mates, and top surrogates continue to fan out across the seven crucial battleground states that will likely decide the 2024 presidential election. On the trailThe Republican presidential nominee starts Tuesday from his home base in Palm Beach, Florida, where his campaign says Trump will deliver remarks to the press.CHECK OUT THE LATEST FOX NEWS POWER RANKINGS IN THE 2024 ELECTIONThe former president then holds two events in Pennsylvania, which, with 19 electoral votes at stake, is the largest prize among the key swing states.Trump’s running mate, Sen. JD Vance of Ohio, campaigns with two stops in battleground Michigan.WHY TRUMP IS MAKING LAST MINUTE STOPS IN BLUE-LEANING STATESThe Democratic nominee is in the nation’s capital, taking a break from swing state travel for a day, as she delivers what the Harris campaign touts as her closing argument, in an address from the Ellipse, with the White House as a backdrop.Harris’ running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, makes three stops in the crucial southeastern battleground of Georgia.Casting ballotsEarly voting turnout has been brisk, with swing states such as Georgia, Michigan and North Carolina breaking records. And with Trump apparently fully on board, the GOP’s efforts to convince Republicans to vote early appear to be working. WHAT THE MOST RECENT FOX NEWS POLLS SHOW IN THE HARRIS-TRUMP SHOWDOWNThe GOP hopes this surge in early voting will help the party rebound from setbacks in the 2020 and 2022 elections, when Democrats dominated early in-person voting and absentee balloting.Poll positionA handful of national polls point to a dead heat between Harris and Trump, while others indicate the vice president with the slight advantage or the former president with the edge. But getting past the top lines, there are warning signs for both candidates.Harris has lost her favorability advantage over Trump in some of the most recent surveys. After replacing President Biden atop the Democrats’ 2024 ticket in July, the vice president’s favorable ratings soared. But they’ve steadily eroded over the past month.Another red flag for Harris are polls indicating her support among Black voters is below Biden’s levels in the 2020 election. For Trump, his support among White voters is on par with his standing in the 2020 election, when he lost the White House to Biden. And the former president still faces a healthy deficit to the vice president when it comes to being trustworthy and caring about people. While national polls are closely watched, the race for the White House is not based on the national popular vote. It’s a battle for the states and their electoral votes. And the latest surveys in the seven crucial battleground states whose razor-thin margins decided Biden’s 2020 victory over Trump and will likely determine whether Harris or Trump wins the 2024 election, are mostly within the margin of error. The most recent Fox News national poll indicated Trump had a two-point edge, but Harris had a 6-point advantage among respondents questioned in all seven battleground states.Cash dash While there’s a margin of error in the polls, there is a clear frontrunner in the battle for campaign cash, another important indicator in presidential politics. And it’s Harris.According to the latest figures the two major party presidential campaigns filed with the Federal Election Commission, Harris hauled in $97 million during the first half of October. That far outpaced the $16 million the Trump campaign said it raised during the first half of this month. Both campaigns use a number of affiliated fundraisings committees to raise money. And when those are included, Trump narrowed the gap, but trailed $176 million to $97 million during the first two weeks of this month.During the first 16 days of October, the Democratic presidential nominee’s campaign outspent Trump $166 million to $99 million, with paid media the top expenditure for both campaigns. However, Harris finished the reporting period with more cash in her coffers. As of Oct. 16, she had $119 million cash on hand, while Trump had $36 million. When joint fundraising committees are also included, Harris holds a $240 million to $168 million cash-on-hand advantage.Get the latest updates from the 2024 campaign trail, exclusive interviews and more at our Fox News Digital election hub.

Freddie Freeman goes yard for 5th straight World Series game as Dodgers are 1 win away from title

Freddie Freeman goes yard for 5th straight World Series game as Dodgers are 1 win away from title

Freddie Freeman is officially on fire in this World Series, as another home run led the Los Angeles Dodgers to a Game 3 victory, 4-2, over the New York Yankees on Monday night at Yankee Stadium. With the win, the Dodgers are now just one more away from their first World Series title since 2020. Freeman has now gone yard in five straight World Series games, dating back to his time with the Atlanta Braves during their 2021 championship. He walked it off in Game 1 with his incredible grand slam in the bottom of the 10th inning, and he followed it up in Game 2 with a solo shot in that victory. CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COMFreeman wasted no time in Game 3, making the most of a missed location by Yankees starter Clarke Schmidt and depositing it into the right field seats for a two-run blast with two outs to put Los Angeles up 2-0 early in this one. Meanwhile, Dodgers starter Walker Buehler, with a roaring crowd in the Bronx, silenced them with five innings of two-hit ball with five strikeouts. YANKEES FACE TREMENDOUS PRESSURE AS WORLD SERIES TURNS TO THE BRONXBoth of those hits came in the fifth inning, too, as he was cruising while his offense plated one more run in the top of the third inning thanks to a Mookie Betts sawed-off single that scored Tommy Edman, and though he didn’t return for the sixth inning, Kiké Hernández had an RBI single himself to make it 4-0. Buehler’s fastball was clearly working from the start of this game, as Yankee hitters couldn’t catch up to it, which ultimately led to him using his effective breaking pitches to his advantage. Just as Jack Flaherty did in Game 1, and Yoshinobu Yamamoto in Game 2, a Dodgers starter was effective and allowed the offense to swing freely knowing they had a solid foundation on the mound. For the Yankees, the only offense they could muster came on their final out, as Alex Verdugo parked a Michael Kopech pitch for a two-run home run to stay alive in the game. Aaron Judge, who has struggled mightily this postseason let alone the World Series, had a ton of pressure entering Game 3 because he was 1-for-9 with six strikeouts in the first two games. Unfortunately for the Yankees, he couldn’t find it either in Game 3, going 0-for-3 with another strikeout and a walk. The Yankees came close to scoring earlier in this one in the bottom of the fifth inning, when Giancarlo Stanton finally got the Yankees in the hit column with a double to left field. Anthony Volpe laced a single with two outs to left field, but Stanton, who isn’t the most fleet of foot, was waved home by third base coach Luis Rojas. Teoscar Hernandez had the perfect throw to home, as Will Smith never had to move his glove as he caught the ball and applied the tag to end the inning. At that moment, the crowd, which had gotten back into the game as the Yankees showed life at the dish, went silenced once more as the Dodgers continued to play exceptional baseball. Stanton went 2-for-4 on the night, while only Volpe, Anthony Rizzo and Verdugo had a hit.Brusdar Graterol, Alex Vesia, Daniel Hudson, Anthony Banda, and Ryan Braiser kept the scoreless streak going for the Dodgers until Kopech’s blemish to Verdugo.New York can’t let that happen again, as they will need to rip off four straight games if they wish to call themselves world champions. Meanwhile, the Dodgers will be hunting for the sweep on Tuesday night in the Bronx.  Follow Fox News Digital’s sports coverage on X, and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.

100 days: Kamala Harris has yet to do formal press conference since emerging as Democratic nominee

100 days: Kamala Harris has yet to do formal press conference since emerging as Democratic nominee

Vice President Kamala Harris has gone 100 days as the presumptive, and now, official Democratic nominee for president without holding an official press conference. Trump has held six news conferences where he took questions from the media since the beginning of August. Harris has done brief, informal press gaggles this week with the media while on the campaign trail, including on Monday when she criticized the tone and rhetoric at Trump’s rally in New York City over the weekend.Harris also ended her streak of not appearing on Fox News earlier this month, sitting for an interview in Pennsylvania with chief political anchor Bret Baier. She also did a CNN town hall and interviews last week with NBC News, Telemundo and CBS.KAMALA HARRIS ASSERTS HER PRESIDENCY ‘WILL NOT BE A CONTINUATION’ OF BIDEN’SHarris has stepped up her interviews in recent weeks, including doing radio hits, friendly appearances with “The View,” Stephen Colbert and Howard Stern and other media appearances. But as for when she’ll actually do a formal press conference as a candidate, that day may never come, at least while she’s still a candidate.Conservative Radio Libre host Jorge Bonilla feels Harris should do a press conference but said it’s almost “irrelevant” because she continues to get a pass. HARRIS DODGES QUESTION ON LOWERING PRICES BY DESCRIBING ‘MIDDLE-CLASS’ ROOTS: NEIGHBORS ‘PROUD OF THEIR LAWN’”She is highly unlikely to do a press conference because the media have enabled and encouraged her ‘plexiglass basement’ strategy, wherein she preserves the illusion of being out there while remaining wholly inaccessible to the press and therefore unaccountable,” Bonilla told Fox News Digital.Trump has skipped several potential interviews in recent weeks, but he showed up at the annual Al Smith dinner that has historically featured the presidential candidates doing lighthearted roasts. Harris decided not to attend, sending a video message instead.CBS NEWS BREAKS ITS SILENCE OVER EDITING ALLEGATIONS IN ‘60 MINUTES’ INTERVIEW WITH HARRISHarris also did an interview this month on “60 Minutes” that has generated controversy due to the show’s editing choices with an answer she gave to a question about Israel. In a preview of the interview on Oct. 6, CBS aired one portion of her answer but appeared to air a completely different part of it during the actual special on Oct. 7.Fox News Digital’s Paul Steinhauser contributed to this report.
