After a breast cancer diagnosis, here are 10 important things you should do, experts say

After a breast cancer diagnosis, here are 10 important things you should do, experts say

One in eight women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point in their lifetime, statistics show. The diagnosis can be shocking, scary and overwhelming, leaving the patient with a long list of questions — perhaps the first of which is, “What should I do next?””Hearing the words ‘you have cancer’ is life-changing and brings with it many emotions,” Tingting Tan, MD, PhD, a medical oncologist and hematologist at City of Hope Newport Beach in California, told Fox News Digital. “Know that your feelings are perfectly normal and give yourself some time.”‘I’M A RADIOLOGIST — TO REDUCE BREAST CANCER RISK, EAT THESE 5 FOODS AND FOLLOW THESE HEALTHY HABITS’Fox News Digital spoke with breast cancer experts who have helped other women navigate this tough journey, gathering their guidance about what to do in the days and weeks after the diagnosis.Experts agree that it’s important to give yourself time to process the news.”It’s natural to want to rush into action, but taking some time and letting the news sink in is important,” Dr. Alyssa Middleton, a psychosocial oncologist in Louisville, Kentucky, and founder of MyCancerResources.com, told Fox News Digital.BREAST CANCER SIGNS, SYMPTOMS TO LOOK OUT FOR, PLUS WHEN TO SCHEDULE ROUTINE SCREENING”Allow yourself to feel the range of emotions that come with this life-altering news.”In most cases, Middleton said, oncologists will wait several weeks to begin treatment to allow time for further testing — “so there’s no need to feel panicked about making decisions today.”Once you’ve allowed yourself some time to process the diagnosis, it’s time to learn as much as you can from reliable sources.”Read the information the doctor provided about the type of breast cancer you have and the stage — a number from 0-4 that describes how big the tumor is, where it is located, and how far it may have spread from the breast,” Middleton advised.Next, it’s important to understand the typical treatments for your type and stage, which may include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation and/or hormone therapy.Write down all of your questions and bring them to every doctor’s appointment, Tan advised.”Those first appointments can be extremely emotional, and there may still be shock or disbelief,” she told Fox News Digital. “Writing your questions down will ensure you don’t forget them.””You aren’t obligated to inform the whole world about your diagnosis,” Middleton said. “Share the news with those who you feel need to know and who will be most supportive.”You can share as much or as little information as you like, she added. “This is your health, and you control what and how much information is shared.”Once you’ve notified your loved ones, it can be helpful to bring a friend or family member to your appointments, Tan said. “This time can be overwhelming, and you want to be sure you understand everything your doctor is explaining,” she said. “Having your support system with you for an extra set of ears can be helpful if you don’t understand something or miss something.”In your day-to-day life, it’s OK to ask for help, Tan emphasized.”Loved ones are often ready and happy to help with preparing meals, taking kids to school, or anything and everything in between,” she said.Studies have shown that getting a second opinion after a breast cancer diagnosis can be beneficial for the patient.”Second opinions can save lives,” Tan said.BREAST CANCER DIAGNOSES SPIKING AMONG WOMEN UNDER 50, NEW REPORT REVEALS”Cancer is unique, and if you are diagnosed with breast cancer, you want to see an expert who specializes in your exact type. Don’t be afraid to ask your doctor for a second opinion.”Even if you don’t switch oncologists, seeking a second opinion can provide reassurance that you have chosen the right care team and treatment plan, Tan noted. “It is essential to do this before starting treatment, as there may be additional options that you should consider,” she said.Another breast oncologist may have different recommendations on how to treat your breast cancer, Middleton agreed. “If the treatment recommendation is the same, you can decide which oncologist you feel most comfortable with and move forward with them,” she said. “If the treatment recommendation differs, you can decide which approach you prefer.”When it comes to seeking care, it’s vital to seek experts who specialize in breast cancer, Tan said. She recommends choosing an oncologist who practices at a cancer center that’s designated by the National Cancer Institute (NCI).”Getting on the right treatment plan at the beginning of your journey is very important,” she said. “Physicians at academic medical centers are the most up to date on the latest treatment breakthroughs and options in the field.”Dr. Anjeanette Brown, MD, a board-certified breast surgeon at the Premier Surgical Network in New Jersey, emphasized the importance of choosing a health care professional with the proper credentials.”This person should be your ‘quarterback,’ directing the essential steps that need to be taken for proper evaluation and imaging prior to going into surgery,” she told Fox News Digital. It’s essential that the patient feels comfortable with her provider, Brown noted. “This will be a long, intense relationship, dealing with emotions and physical changes that are about to happen, secondary to surgical intervention, as well as possible medical management,” she added.THESE 17 CANCER TYPES ARE MORE COMMON IN GEN X AND MILLENNIALS, AS STUDY NOTES ‘ALARMING TREND’Dr. Lauren Ramsey, a breast cancer surgeon in Ft. Worth, Texas, specifically recommends seeing a breast surgeon (surgical oncologist) in a timely fashion — ideally a provider who has completed a specialized fellowship in breast surgical oncology. “Other doctors, such as medical oncologists and radiation oncologists, may end up playing a role — however, the breast surgeon will be able to make those referrals for you,” she said. Many women find invaluable support from other breast cancer patients and survivors. “Online groups can be a great source of support, with others who are further along in treatment sharing their experiences and supporting you in your journey,” said Middleton.”If you’re feeling overwhelmed with all the information that’s been thrown at you, you may want to wait a little while to do this,” she added. For patients who want to have children in the future, it’s important to consider this before beginning treatment, according to Middleton. “You’ll want to meet with a fertility specialist to learn about your options and make arrangements for any procedures to be done before any breast cancer treatment starts,” she advised. While a breast cancer diagnosis can seem ominous, experts agree that prognoses have improved over the decades. “Breast cancer mortality rates have dropped by 44% since 1989, thanks to early detection and treatment,” Tan said.”When breast cancer is localized – meaning it hasn’t spread outside the breast – the five-year survival rate is 99%, based on NCI data of women diagnosed with breast cancer between 2013 and 2019.”There are also more than four million breast cancer survivors in the U.S., Tan added. Exercise is recommended even with a breast cancer diagnosis, Ramsey said. CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR OUR HEALTH NEWSLETTER”We recommend any form of physical activity, whether it’s light walking or a more structured exercise,” she advised. “Continue performing your usual daily activities.”Adopting a balanced and nutrient-dense diet can also help support the body during treatment and recovery, Ramsey added. “Focus on lean proteins, fruits, vegetables, whole grains and healthy fats,” she said. “Avoid sugary and highly processed foods.”It’s important to pay attention to your emotional, psychological and spiritual needs throughout a breast cancer journey, Tan advised.Brown echoed the importance of self-care.For more Health articles, visit www.foxnews.com/health”This could include a discussion with a nutritionist, giving yourself the space to accept and adjust to the diagnosis, and finding a support group or therapist,” she said. “It’s a lot, so there is no shame in reaching out to others.”

New Jersey family-friendly hayride event dissolves into chaos after hundreds of teens wreak havoc: police

A PTA-sponsored hayride in a quiet New Jersey town dissolved into chaos as police were forced to intervene after hundreds of unruly teens began fighting in a local park and causing havoc. The Collingswood Police Department shared in a Facebook post that the family-friendly Haunted Hayride in Knight Park required police to intervene after an estimated 200+ juveniles were dropped off at Knight Park in Collingswood, New Jersey.”The event was quickly disrupted by fights breaking out, largely between arriving youths, and unruly behavior,” the department said.Authorities said that the out-of-control behavior began shortly after 8:20 p.m. on Oct. 19, with the young adults “running recklessly through the crowd and cutting in line for the hay ride.”HALLOWEEN SIDE HUSTLE BRINGS MOM A FORTUNE FOR HER DECORATING ABILITIESPolice officers dispersed the rowdy kids to “ensure the safety of the families attending the event,” police said. However, it was decided there was no safe way to continue the hayride event, so the police shut the Halloween event down.TOP-SEARCHED HALLOWEEN COSTUMES OF 2024: FROM MOVIE CHARACTERS TO POP CULTURE ICONSBut, the night was not over for the wild teens. Police said that 50–70 juveniles took over local gas station, Wawa.”As officers were in the midst of dispersing the park crowds, a call was received reporting an incident at Wawa on Haddon Avenue, involving 50–70 juveniles taking over the store,” police said. “Officers were able to assist Wawa with dispersing the group of juveniles who were stealing items and causing a disturbance.”Wawa was also forced to shut down to prevent any more damage, police said. The chaos continued along through residential yards, police said.”When officers arrived at the park, they found that roughly 80 juveniles were engaged in a massive fight and were met with resistance from youths punching, kicking and pushing past the officers to continue fighting,” police said. “Some juveniles broke away from the main group and began running through nearby residential backyards.”Police officers eventually dispersed the crowd and restored order. They did not make any arrests, the department said.In a Facebook post, event staff at the Collingswood Haunted Hayride event said that the “evening was beyond what we could have expected.””Unfortunately, as everyone saw and realized, a lot of the evening was beyond what could have been expected, but with the feedback and awareness we will review and organize to determine a way to move into next year,” the hayride wrote on Facebook. “We appreciate your support and without it our event could not happen.”

Nicolas Cage warns Hollywood actors that AI ‘wants to take your instrument’

Nicolas Cage warns Hollywood actors that AI 'wants to take your instrument'

Nicolas Cage continues to share his fears about artificial intelligence in Hollywood. At the 25th Newport Beach Film Festival on Sunday, the actor gave a speech ahead of his Icon Award reception during the Honors Brunch where he emphasized the need to control your own image and performance as AI rises in popularity with studios.”There is a new technology in town. It’s a technology that I didn’t have to contend with for 42 years until recently. But these 10 young actors, this generation, most certainly will be, and they are calling it ‘EBDR.’ This technology wants to take your instrument. We are the instruments as film actors. We are not hiding behind guitars and drums,” Cage said, per Deadline.EBDR stands for “employment-based digital replica,” one of two digital replicas allowed following the deal settled by the actors’ union SAG-AFTRA and the studios following last year’s dual strikes.WHAT IS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)?Per the rules in the contract, an “EBDR is one created in connection with your employment on a motion picture” and may require something like having an actor’s body scanned. Compensation is based on how much a performer would have worked in person for the scenes the digital replica is used in, and performers are entitled to residuals from their replica’s appearance in the finished product.”The studios want this so that they can change your face after you’ve already shot it — they can change your face, they can change your voice, they can change your line deliveries, they can change your body language, they can change your performance,” Cage warned. He continued, “I’m asking you, if you’re approached by a studio to sign a contract, permitting them to use EBDR on your performance, I want you to consider what I am calling ‘MVMFMBMI’ — my voice, my face, my body, my imagination — my performance, in response. Protect your instrument.”CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR THE ENTERTAINMENT NEWSLETTERThe Oscar winner has expressed his concerns about the technology a few times in the past, as well.In July, during an interview with The New Yorker, Cage said he needed to leave to do “a scan” for an upcoming role, but admitted the concept made him nervous.”Well, they have to put me in a computer and match my eye color and change— I don’t know. They’re just going to steal my body and do whatever they want with it via digital AI. … God, I hope not AI. I’m terrified of that. I’ve been very vocal about it,” he said during the interview.LIKE WHAT YOU’RE READING? Where’s the heartbeat going to be?””I mean, what are you going to do with my body and my face when I’m dead? I don’t want you to do anything with it,” he said. The actor also told The Associated Press during an interview in December 2023 that he was concerned about his life rights, and the use of celebrities’ likenesses after death by AI, calling the digital recreations “inhumane.”WATCH: AI EXPERT ON HOW THE TECHNOLOGY HAS CHANGED TO MAKE AI DEEPFAKES EASIER”Someone owns the rights to James Dean right now. They could put him in a Vietnam movie, which is what they’re trying to do. … To me, it’s inhumane, OK. It’s inhumane. It doesn’t get any more inhumane than AI. People are going to lose jobs. And I’m sure he, from the beyond, would not be happy about it, you know?” Cage asserted.Last year, the BBC reported that an AI version of Dean will appear in a film titled “Back to Eden.” In 2019, The Hollywood Reporter reported that Magic City Films announced the late actor would appear in a role in its film “Finding Jack,” but it ultimately fell through.

Trump declares Harris campaign is ‘imploding’ in tax cut-focused Vegas rally: ‘leading by so much’

Trump declares Harris campaign is ‘imploding’ in tax cut-focused Vegas rally: ‘leading by so much’

Former President Donald Trump traveled to Las Vegas on Thursday evening for a Turning Point Action rally where he declared that Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign is “imploding” in a speech that focused on his tax cut plans. “[Harris is] actually imploding, if you take a look. Because, look, I’m not supposed to say it, but we are leading by so much,” Trump said Thursday evening in Las Vegas to cheers from the crowd.  “Now, we’re leading by a lot in Nevada. We’re leading by a lot in Arizona, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin. Even states that are typically never in play for 50, 60, 70 years … But the fact is that states, other states too, big states, are all in play and they like us. But you know what? They think she is grossly incompetent. Let’s face it, she is not doing well,” Trump continued. The 45th president joined the Turning Point Action rally at an arena on the University of Nevada, Las Vegas’ campus, where supporters such as Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, Vivek Ramaswamy, and former Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard also addressed the crowd. Trump said during the rally that 29,000 people were inside the arena, and another “29,000 outside to fill the place up twice.” HARRIS CLAIMS TRUMP WIN WOULD BE ‘CATASTROPHIC’ FOR SOCIAL SECURITY, BUT FIRST TERM TELLS DIFFERENT TALENevada is another key battleground state, and where Trump first announced earlier in the campaign cycle that he would eliminate taxes on tips. He again focused his Thursday speech on tax cuts, slamming the Biden-Harris for spiraling inflation while criticizing Harris for also saying she would end taxes on tips after Trump’s June announcement. “When I said no tax on tips, remember? A month later, she comes out, ‘and we will have no tax on tips.’ She never said that. And she’s never said it again. You’re not going to get it,” he said. “We’re going to have no tax on tips. And she wanted to increase, and did increase, the so-called tip allocation tax rate by 60%. She raised your tax, and then she’s supposed to say ‘no, no tax on tips.’ In other words, even after Kamala wrecked your economy with inflation, she came after you with tip income. Like sort of like a vulture would do. If she gets four more years, Kamala Harris will pick your pockets bare,” Trump said. MOST U.S. ADULTS WORRY ABOUT FUTURE OF MEDICARE, SOCIAL SECURITY, GALLUP POLL FINDS: ‘MAGNITUDE OF CONCERN’Trump told the crowd that if he wins next month, he will eliminate taxes on tips, overtime, and on Social Security benefits, and took a poll during the rally, asking supporters to cheer for which of the three tax cut plans they like the best. Cheers and applause broke out as he rattled off the three options, with Trump declaring that seniors’ support for no tax on Social Security benefits received the most support. LIBERAL MEDIA OUTLET INADVERTENTLY EXPLAINS BENEFITS OF TRUMP’S ECONOMIC PLANThe 45th president also railed against the Biden-Harris administration’s border policies, slammed alleged Democratic efforts to turn the U.S. military “woke,” and vowed to work to end the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine as president-elect if he is victorious on Nov. 5. “Sadly, zero chance that Putin would have gone into Ukraine if I were president. Zero chance. What a shame that is. All of the death,” Trump said of the war that broke out when Russia invaded Ukraine in February of 2022. Trump said he will call both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the evening of Nov. 5 if he wins. TRUMP PROMISES TO END TAXATION OF OVERTIME PAY: ‘YOUR OVERTIME HOURS WILL BE TAX-FREE'”On the evening of Nov. 5, I will call Putin. I will call Zelenskyy. I’ll say, ‘we got to stop it.’ And I’m going to try and get it done as president-elect, as president-elect. That’ll give me plenty of, that’ll give me plenty of credibility. I don’t have to wait until January 20th. I’m going to try and get it done sooner than that. It’s horrible,” Trump said, adding that the war in Israel also would not have happened if he were in office. Trump also hearkened back to his days on “The Apprentice,” calling on the battleground state voters to tell Harris on Nov. 5, “You’re fired.” CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP”Nevada, you have to stand up, and you have to tell Kamala Harris that you’ve had enough. You can’t take it anymore. She’s the worst vice president. She’s grossly incompetent. Kamala, Kamala, you’re fired. Get out of here. Fired, fired! Get out. Get the hell out of here. We got to fix our country,” Trump said.  Get the latest updates from the 2024 campaign trail, exclusive interviews and more at our Fox News Digital election hub.

Texas AG Paxton files criminal referral against DOJ from ‘suspicious donations’ through Democratic group

Texas AG Paxton files criminal referral against DOJ from 'suspicious donations' through Democratic group

With Election Day just around the corner, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton fired off a criminal referral against the Biden administration’s Department of Justice alleging that a popular progressive fundraising platform was interfering in the presidential election.”My investigation uncovered evidence showing that bad actors are likely using ActBlue’s platform to make illegal campaign contributions. It is illegal to engage in election fraud, and it is illegal to obscure one’s identity to flout election rules.” Paxton wrote in a X post Thursday.”The Department of Justice must take immediate action to prevent illegal conduct in our elections,” he said.TEXAS AG OPENS INVESTIGATION INTO ‘SUSPICIOUS DONATIONS’ MADE TO HARRIS CAMPAIGN THROUGH DEMOCRATIC GROUPThe Texas attorney general wrote in a letter penned to Attorney General Merrick Garland that his office discovered “highly suspicious campaign contributions” made through the online political committee contribution platform.”That investigation has uncovered alarming evidence showing that anonymous actors are systematically making contribution through ActBlue’s platform in the name of other people,” Paxton wrote. “This conduct appears to be criminal in a number of ways, including under 18 U.S.C 1343 (wire fraud; 18 U.S.C 1028 (identity theft); and 52 U.S.C. 30122 (making contributions in the name of another).”HOUSE ADMINISTRATION COMMITTEE PROBES DEMOCRAT FUNDRAISER ACTBLUE OVER REPORTS OF ILLICIT CASH FLOWSActBlue targets small-dollar donations, the Hill first reported, and has been an integral part of the Democratic fundraising structure, collecting an estimated $1.5 billion from about 7 million donors. While that influx of cash was split among nearly 19,000 campaigns, an excessive amount has gone to the highest profile races. In just the first few days of the Harris campaign, for example, donors gave her $200 million through the platform, per ActBlue’s account on the social platform X, the Hill reported. In his letter to Garland, Paxton shared the petition with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) and urged changes that would close alleged “loopholes.” Paxton said that these alleged “loopholes” could be “exploited to illegally funnel money into American elections.”‘SERIOUS LOOPHOLE’: GOP WIDENS PROBE INTO ACTBLUE, DEM FUNDRAISING PLATFORM HELPING HARRIS RAISE MILLIONSThe petition came after Paxton opened an investigation into ActBlue in Dec. 2023 to determine whether the platform’s operations were compliant with all applicable laws.In August 2024, Paxton revealed that an investigation into ActBlue determined that the group began requiring donors using credit cards to provide “CVV” codes, a common security measure. However, Paxton said it appeared that “straw donations” were systematically being made using false identities, through untraceable payment methods.”I have made a criminal referral to the U.S. Department of Justice based on the findings from our investigation into ActBlue. My investigation uncovered evidence showing that bad actors are likely using ActBlue’s platform to make illegal campaign contributions,” Paxton said in a statement. “It is illegal to engage in election fraud and it is illegal to obscure one’s identity to flout election rules. The Department of Justice must take immediate action to prevent illegal conduct in our elections.”Fox News Digital reached out to ActBlue and the FEC for comment.Fox News Digital’s Stepheny Price contributed to this report.
