Jim Harbaugh dubs Michigan ‘America’s team’ after defeating Penn State amid sign-stealing suspension

Jim Harbaugh dubs Michigan ‘America’s team’ after defeating Penn State amid sign-stealing suspension

Michigan’s football program suffered a significant blow when, on the eve of their first game against a ranked opponent this season, head coach Jim Harbaugh was issued a three-game suspension amid allegations of sign-stealing.  But the Wolverines responded on Saturday, defeating Penn State 24-15 to improve to 10-0 on the season.  It’s that grit, Harbaugh believes, that makes the Wolverines “America’s team.”  MICHIGAN REMAINS NO. 2 IN AP POLL, LOSES TWO FIRST-PLACE VOTES AS TEAM DEALS WITH SIGN-STEALING SCANDAL “Watching it from where I was watching it, I was like, ‘How can you not see this?’” Harbaugh said during a press conference on Monday.  “The emotion of the team, the perseverance, and then just the stalwartness of these guys.” The Big Ten Conference announced Friday that the veteran head coach would be sidelined for the final three games of the season amid investigations into an in-person-scouting and sign-stealing operation, the latter of which centers around former low-level staffer Connor Stalions.  CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM The probes come as Michigan chases a third straight conference championship and the school’s first national title since 1997.  “It’s gotta be America’s team. It’s gotta be America’s team,” Harbaugh said Monday. “America loves a team that beats the odds, beats the adversity, overcomes what the naysayers and critics, so-called experts think. That’s my favorite kind of team.” Harbaugh, who already missed the first three games of the season because of a school-imposed suspension for an unrelated NCAA recruiting violations case, is looking for the courts to step in to avoid missing any more games.  “I’m just looking for that opportunity, due process,” he said Monday. “I’m not looking for special treatment. I’m not looking for a popularity contest. I’m just looking for the merit for what the case is.” If things don’t go in their favor on Friday, Harbaugh said offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore will again take over for him.  The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Englishman, suspected member of notorious ‘Beatles’ ISIS cell gets 8 years in prison

Englishman, suspected member of notorious 'Beatles' ISIS cell gets 8 years in prison

A British convert to Islam who was convicted in Turkey of being part of the Islamic State group was sentenced to eight years in prison in Britain on Monday after he pleaded guilty to terrorism charges. Aine Leslie Davis, 39, was deported from Turkey in August 2022 and detained on arrival at London’s Luton Airport after serving a seven-and-a-half-year sentence for membership in IS. He pleaded guilty last month to having a firearm for terrorism purposes and two charges of funding terrorism. DENMARK SCORES WIN IN LEGAL BATTLE WITH ISLAMIST FIGHTER WHO CLAIMS HE SPIED ON COUNTRY’S BEHALF Prosecutors said Davis, who left his home in London and traveled to Syria in 2013 to join the armed conflict there, enlisted his wife to persuade a friend to bring him 20,000 euros ($21,400) to support his cause. The friend was stopped at Heathrow Airport in 2014, and Davis’s wife, Amal El-Wahabi, was convicted of funding terrorism. Davis’ defense lawyer, Mark Summers, issued an apology to the Syrian people on his behalf, saying he and others like him “caused more harm than good.” British authorities had long suspected that Davis was part of an IS cell known as “The Beatles” — so called because of the men’s British accents — that tortured and killed Western hostages in Syria a decade ago, when IS controlled a large swath of Syria and Iraq. TENNESSEE MAN CONVICTED FOR ATTEMPTING TO PROVIDE MATERIAL SUPPORT TO ISIS Davis has denied being connected to the cell. Two members of the “Beatles” cell, Alexanda Kotey and El Shafee Elsheikh, were captured by U.S.-backed Kurdish forces in 2018 and are serving life sentences in the U.S. A third, Mohammed Emwazi, was killed in a drone strike in 2015. Summers asserted during the trial that prosecutors in the U.S. decided last year they would not seek to put Davis on trial as a member of the cell due to insufficient evidence. The judge said he was sentencing Davis for the offenses on the indictment and not for the reported allegations.

Jets’ Robert Saleh remains committed to Zach Wilson after another letdown: ‘He played a good game yesterday’

Jets' Robert Saleh remains committed to Zach Wilson after another letdown: 'He played a good game yesterday'

New York Jets fans hoping that this latest performance from Zach Wilson, which came amid a 16-12 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday night, would lead head coach Robert Saleh to bench him won’t have their wishes fulfilled. At least that’s what it appeared to sound like again from Saleh on Monday when addressing the second straight loss for the club that moves them to 4-5 on the season. Wilson was 23 of 39 for 263 yards, which is certainly not a bad performance at all. But with no offensive touchdowns – one was called back on a holding penalty when Breece Hall rushed in from inside the Raiders’ 5-yard line – and a crucial interception that came late in the game, Wilson once again didn’t do enough to push his team to victory. CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM Saleh sees differently. “I get it, there’s a yearning for more,” Saleh said to reporters. “But I feel like he played a good game yesterday. He’ll admit that he’d want that interception back. But it is hard to make changes just to make changes, just to pacify something, especially when someone is not deserving. If he was deserving of it, I got you. Let’s change something.” The interception that Saleh referred to came on the Jets’ second-to-last drive, one that looked very promising late in the game with Gang Green needing a touchdown to retake the lead that they held for most of the contest.  RAIDERS DOWN JETS BEHIND KEY INTERCEPTION TO PICK UP BACK-TO-BACK WINS On 2nd-and-8 on the Raiders’ 20-yard line, Wilson’s eyes locked on receiver Allen Lazard near the first-down marker, and he tried to thread the needle to pick up a new set of downs. Instead, veteran linebacker Robert Spillane saw Wilson the whole way, jumping the route and intercepting the pass. He took it back 25 yards with 1 minute and 22 seconds left in the game. Wilson would have another opportunity to pick up the win, but it needed a miracle from the football gods on a final-second Hail Mary. Garrett Wilson and Tyler Conklin got their hands on the ball, but it fell to the turf in the end. The Jets have gone two games in a row without scoring a touchdown. And thanks to research done by the New York Post’s Brian Costello, the Jets have scored 15 offensive touchdowns in their last 17 games, which would be a full season. Three of those touchdowns were against the Chicago Bears, who owned the worst record in the NFL last season. Wilson’s only passing touchdown in the last five games came on a 50-yard catch-and-run by Hall against the New York Giants – a game the Jets were on the verge of losing before Big Blue’s blunders led to a drive from Wilson that sent things to overtime.  It’s moments like that overtime-forcing drive when Wilson shows flashes of good quarterback play that’s needed to win games. But the last time he put together a good touchdown drive was against the Kansas City Chiefs six games prior. JETS’ ROBERT SALEH STAMPS OUT ‘CONSPIRACY THEORY’ ABOUT ZACH WILSON AFTER LOSS However, Saleh clearly views his quarterback situation as one that would be a change just to make a change, and that’s something he doesn’t feel he needs right now. But with the Buffalo Bills and Miami Dolphins on the schedule for the next two games, Sunday night was viewed as a must-win by some to remain in playoff contention because, despite great defensive play, they can’t score points on offense. So, heading into the rematch with Buffalo, Wilson’s job appears safe for another week.

NY AG Letitia James caught smirking as Don Jr. takes the stand at Trump civil trial

NY AG Letitia James caught smirking as Don Jr. takes the stand at Trump civil trial

Democratic New York Attorney General Letitia James was caught on camera smirking as Donald Trump Jr. took the stand at his father’s civil trial Monday.  Over the past several weeks, former President Trump has made many appearances in court defending the Trump Organization, which has its New York business license in jeopardy as James has leveled fraud charges against him and his two adult sons, who were named co-defendants in the case.  However, as Trump Jr. was about to give his testimony, the camera in the courtroom caught a glimpse of James looking a bit gleeful.  TRUMP ATTORNEY SOUNDS ALARM ON NY AG LETITIA JAMES AMID CIVIL FRAUD CASE: ‘SHE CAMPAIGNED ON TRUMP’ James has been vocal in her opposition towards Trump and repeatedly campaigned on prosecuting the former president before becoming attorney general. She has denied her charges against him are politically motivated. The moment was reminiscent of Judge Arthur Engoron, overseeing the Trump trial, last month striking a pose for the cameras with a giant grin and a comical shrug. TRUMP DEMANDS JURY, SAYS NEW YORK AG HAS ‘NO CASE’ IN HEATED TESTIMONY On Sunday’s installment of Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures,” Trump attorney Alina Habba took aim at James, alleging political motivations are behind the ongoing trial.  “Mrs. James wanted a headline. She campaigned on this, remember, before she was even the attorney general. That’s how she got the attorney general role. She campaigned on Trump, so she had to follow through, and she should really dismiss this case, it’s making her look bad, frankly, and the city needs her attention elsewhere,” Habba said.  The war of words between Trump, James and Engoron has been so heated that the judge slapped a gag order against the former president after he publicly lashed out against the court. TRUMP, JUDGE ENGORON TRADE JABS DURING FORMER PRESIDENT’S TESTIMONY IN CIVIL TRIAL STEMMING FROM NYAG LAWSUIT This is in addition to the four trials Trump will face next year, between the federal charges against him brought by Special Counsel Jack Smith regarding his actions leading up to Jan. 6 and his handling of classified documents, the New York case involving Trump’s 2016 hush money payments to Stormy Daniels and the Georgia case involving efforts to reverse the 2020 results. A Illinois man died Saturday while waterfowl hunting in Iowa, the state’s department of natural resources confirmed.  Seth Egelhoff, 26, was shot in the face by an individual in his hunting party, according to The Associated Press.  Someone called 911 to report the shooting around 1 p.m. in the Bays Branch Wildlife Area in Guthrie County.  Emergency medics rushed Egelhoff to a spot to be picked up by a medical helicopter, but he died en route, the department said. The season generally runs from September through January. Shooting hours are listed as a half hour before sunrise until sunset.
