Anti-death penalty activists protest in Texas against capital punishment

Anti-death penalty activists protest in Texas against capital punishment

Anti-death penalty advocates held a rally over the weekend in Texas calling for capital punishment to be abolished, as several high-profile death row cases in Texas and other states have sparked debate over whether the death penalty should remain.Former death row inmates spoke at the 25th Annual March to Abolish the Death Penalty on Saturday, according to Fox 26. The march held each fall features state abolitionists, former death row inmates and allies opposing capital punishment who all gather together to demand an end to the state-sanctioned death of inmates on death row. Many of the advocates said they are fighting for innocent people like Robert Roberson, who is currently on death row over his conviction in which prosecutors say he killed his two-year-old daughter, Nikki Curtis, by shaking her to death, known as shaken baby syndrome. But his lawyers say Nikki actually died from other health issues such as pneumonia and that new evidence proves his innocence. His lawyers also said doctors had failed to rule out these other medical explanations for the child’s symptoms.Roberson was scheduled to be put to death on Thursday before the state Supreme Court issued a stay to delay his execution shortly before it was set to take place. He would have been the first person in the U.S. to be executed based on shaken baby syndrome.TEXAS JUDGE GRANTS INJUNCTION AHEAD OF MAN’S EXECUTION IN ‘SHAKEN BABY SYNDROME’ CASEThe delay was issued Thursday night after a bipartisan group of state lawmakers subpoenaed Roberson to testify Monday about his case. The ruling came after the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals earlier Thursday night denied a motion for a stay of execution, reversing a judge’s temporary injunction that was handed down earlier that day.More than 80 Texas state lawmakers, as well as the detective who helped the prosecution, medical experts, parental rights groups, human rights groups, bestselling novelist John Grisham and other advocates have called for the state to grant Roberson clemency over the belief that he is innocent. A group of state lawmakers also visited Roberson in prison to encourage him.At the rally in Texas, former death row inmate Pamala Tise said she was locked up for a total of 40 years.TEXAS DEATH ROW INMATE’S LAWYER SAYS ‘THERE WAS NO CRIME’ AS SHE MAKES LAST-DITCH EFFORT TO SAVE HIS LIFETise was sentenced to death at the age of 24 following her conviction on two counts of capital murder, Fox 26 reported. Her initial conviction was overturned in 1983, but she was again sentenced to death after a retrial. The following year, she was placed back on death row and remained there until 2000.”I was not innocent of my crime. When I did my crime, I was on a lot of drugs and when I came off the drugs a week later and realized what we had done, I turned myself into the police,” Tise said, according to Fox 26.But in 2000, her conviction was overturned because of a conflict of interests. She was taken off death row following a plea bargain that reduced her capital murder charges to two counts of aggravated robbery.”So I went in at 24 and came out at 64,” said Tise, who now campaigns against the death penalty.”Having someone be executed, to me, would be the easy way out. Spending the rest of your life in prison is a living hell,” Tise added.Texas Death Penalty Abolition Movement organizer Gloria Rubac said “Harris County has more people on death row than any state.”The activists said they hope a court will hear the new evidence in Roberson’s case when he testifies on Monday.

Doctor reveals unsettling reason why you should wait to unpack your suitcase after traveling

Doctor reveals unsettling reason why you should wait to unpack your suitcase after traveling

A primary care physician in Virginia has taken to TikTok to share a travel tip involving creepy crawlers that might make you rethink unpacking your bags right away. The video posted by Dr. Jason Singh of Loudoun County, Virginia, has garnered more than 750,000 views after he shared a PSA about bed bugs and your luggage.”Here’s why you shouldn’t unpack your suitcase right after coming home from a vacation,” Singh said on TikTok. “OK, so you hear me out, especially if you stayed in a hotel. And that’s because of bedbugs.”AMID BEDBUG INFESTATION, SHOCKING VIDEO SHOWS A STREET IN PARIS LITTERED WITH OLD MATTRESSES”Bed bug eggs typically hatch within six to 10 days, and the nymphs require a blood meal shortly after hatching to continue their development,” he added.Singh said he decided to post this video after realizing that not many travelers had knowledge about bed bug exposure. It was one of his patient’s cases that made him realize this possible bed bug infestation was worth educating others about.AIRLINE PASSENGERS COULD BE REMOVED FROM FLIGHTS FOR GOING BAREFOOT: ETIQUETTE EXPERT WEIGHS IN”[I was] just struck by how persistent and distressing their bed bug reaction was, even weeks after returning from their trip. It made me realize that many travelers might not be aware of the potential long-term consequences of bed bug exposure,” Singh told Fox News Digital via email. He realized he needed to fill the gap “in public knowledge about effective prevention strategies.”On TikTok, Singh continued to describe the reasoning behind why bed bugs need to stay packed away and face exposure.”Now, if your suitcase remains closed and undisturbed for at least two weeks, well, any bedbug egg or nymph present will likely die due to starvation or desiccation, so now you have a reason to be lazy, just like me,” he said in his video.HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU WASH YOUR JEANS? CLEANING EXPERTS SETTLE THE DEBATE”And just let your suitcase hang there in the side. I mean, let’s be honest. What kind of psycho unpacks right away? Let me know.”The comment section of Singh’s TikTok video was filled with other social media users talking about their unpacking habits.”I unpack & throw everything in the washer as soon as I get home. I need all my stuff I travel with,” one user wrote.”Who has two extra weeks of clothes that they don’t need when they get back from holiday! Or am I just a peasant and only have a week or two of clothes in total,” another person commented.AIRLINE PASSENGER SAYS SHE RECEIVED ‘CREEPIEST’ TEXT FROM STRANGER WHO SAW PHONE NUMBER ON HER LUGGAGE TAGEric Braun, a board-certified entomologist in Reading, Pennsylvania, shared his own thoughts on bed bug prevention and what to do if you spot something in your luggage.”If a bed bug problem is a significant concern for the traveler, another helpful tip is not to store personal items and clothing inside hotel drawers, along the floor, or near hotel furniture. While I travel, I place my suitcase in the bathroom, specifically the shower/tub, as it can be difficult for bed bugs to access those areas,” Braun told Fox News Digital via email.Braun advised travelers not to bring an assumed infested suitcase into a living space, but rather outside the home before placing the clothes in a trash bag and immediately into a laundry room.”Remember that, in the right temperatures, bed bugs can live several months without being fed, so don’t assume that suitcases that haven’t been used in a few months are bed bug-free,” Braun said. For more Lifestyle articles, visit www.foxnews.com/lifestyle.”If suitcases must be stored in living spaces, such as under beds, put them in trash bags first, and tape the bag shut. Suitcases can be treated with over-the-counter products labeled for that application,” he added.Braun shared tips and actions to take if you believe you found bed bugs in your luggage.”If a bed bug is spotted, there are some immediate actions the traveler should take to avoid further spread. Anything that can be laundered can be immediately placed in the dryer at a high-temperature setting,” Braun said.”Place personal belongings that can be laundered immediately in the dryer before washing. High heat (at least 1,300 F+) can kill bed bugs and their eggs.”CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR OUR LIFESTYLE NEWSLETTERBraun said that if you have clothes that cannot immediately be thrown into the dryer, you should place the apparel in a closed bag or sealed container and place it outside your home and away from any possible entry points.Ben Hottel, a Georgia-based technical service manager at Orkin, shared some insights on how best to treat your luggage if it’s infested with bed bugs.Hottel agreed with Braun, stating that it is best to immediately unpack your bag outside the home and throw your clothes into the dryer at the highest sitting for a minimum of 30-45 minutes.”Recently hatched nymphs can live up to a month without a blood meal. Older bed bugs that might also be in the suitcase can live much longer – maybe even up to a year … it’s best to do laundry immediately as the high temperature setting acts as a heat treatment,” Hottel told Fox News Digital.Hottel advised people to call a pest control company if they believe there’s a bed bug infestation inside their home.

Multiple people killed after helicopter crashes into radio tower in Houston

A helicopter crashed into a radio tower Sunday night in Houston, Texas, leaving multiple people dead, including a child, according to officials. The Houston Fire Department said the incident happened in the city’s Greater East End neighborhood at 7:54 p.m. The private aircraft with four people onboard either struck a cable coming from the tower or actually struck the tower, Houston Police Chief J. Noe Diaz said at a news conference, according to The New York Times. There were no casualties on the ground, Diaz said.NAVY JET LOCATED AFTER CRASHING NEAR MOUNT RAINIER IN WASHINGTONIt was not immediately known if all four people onboard the helicopter had died. Officials said they did not know the age of the deceased child.Fire officials said a blaze the size of two to three blocks started in a grass field after the radio tower collapsed. No other structures on the ground were impacted by the crash.Houston mayor John Whitmire said the incident was “tragic” but that “it is fortunate it wasn’t worse,” as a gas tank near the scene and homes in the area were not impacted. The tower “is surrounded by residents and that’s where we were very fortunate that it didn’t topple in one direction or another,” he said. “The fireball was pretty much isolated.”The mayor said there were some power outages for residents near the scene, but the number of people impacted and how long they will have outages was not immediately known. Some residents told The New York Times the crash shook their homes and felt like an earthquake. One resident said an explosion then occurred and the lights in his home briefly flickered on and off.TEXAS GIRL, 5, ACCIDENTALLY SHOOTS HERSELF, STEPFATHER ARRESTED WHILE OUT ON BOND FOR GUN POSSESSION AS FELONCLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APPCity council member Mario Castillo said on the social media platform X that he was monitoring the helicopter crash and that it was a “private touring helicopter” rather than one that belonged to the Houston Police Department. The incident remains under investigation. Russell Wilson’s Steelers debut spoils Aaron Rodgers’ reunion with Davante Adams in beatdown on Jets

Russell Wilson's Steelers debut spoils Aaron Rodgers' reunion with Davante Adams in beatdown on Jets

Davante Adams’ reunion with Aaron Rodgers was spoiled by the debut of Russell Wilson, who led his Pittsburgh Steelers to a 37-15 victory over the New York Jets on “Sunday Night Football.”While all the hype surrounded Adams reuniting with Rodgers, his old Green Bay Packers quarterback, following a trade from the Las Vegas Raiders earlier this week, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin made the switch at quarterback to Wilson over Justin Fields, seeing if the veteran Super Bowl champion could lead his offense the way he wanted to see it. And while Wilson had to shake some rust off, the Steelers’ offensive engine steamrolled a good Jets defense with a brilliant performance from its signal caller. CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COMWilson threw for 264 yards on 16-of-29 through the air with two passing touchdowns, one to his top target on the night, George Pickens, and another to Van Jefferson. Meanwhile, Steelers running back Najee Harris led a formidable ground game with 102 yards on 21 carries with a touchdown at the end of the game to cap an incredible night for Pittsburgh, as they moved to 5-2 on the year.It was everything Steelers fans wanted to see with Wilson taking over at quarterback, but Jets fans were not expecting what they watched unfold on Sunday night. DONALD TRUMP LEADS RAUCOUS ‘U-S-A!’ CHANT FROM SUITE AT STEELERS-JETS GAMEIt’s not usual for a team to be in win-now mode after a 2-4 start to the season, but the Jets made the move for Adams, following the firing of head coach Robert Saleh, to give Rodgers yet another elite weapon to work with on offense. But that dream connection that wreaked havoc on defenses for years in Green Bay was not seen immediately in Adams’ debut, as he caught just three of his nine targets from Rodgers for 30 yards. There is certainly rust that needs to be shook off between these two, but it did the Jets no favors in this matchup that Jets fans were hoping sparked a run. Now, at 2-5, Rodgers and the Jets find themselves digging the hole a little deeper with its fourth straight loss this season. New York did have a good start to this game, though, thanks to the work of Breece Hall, the Jets’ star running back who has gotten going these past two games despite the result on the record. He led the Jets in receiving – yes, receiving – on Sunday night with 103 yards on six catches, including a 57-yard catch-and-run that almost resulted in a touchdown. He did score on the ground for the first touchdown of this game as the Jets got off to a 7-3 first-quarter lead. But the second half belonged to Wilson and the Steelers, who put up 24 unanswered points to pull away from Gang Green in this one. STEELERS ADD SECURITY MEASURES FOR TRUMP’S ATTENDANCE AT GAME AGAINST AARON RODGERS’ JETSWith former president Donald Trump in attendance, alongside ex-Steelers stars Antonio Brown and Le’Veon Bell, Wilson barreled in a quarterback sneak from one yard out after Ben Bishop returned an interception that bounced off the chest of Jets receiver Garrett Wilson to New York’s one-yard line. That put the Steelers up 23-15 after Chris Boswell hit home a field goal to take the lead back earlier in the third quarter. Then, a blocked field goal for the Jets sparked another Steelers touchdown drive, as Wilson found Jefferson from four yards out on third-and-goal to start running away. The Jets would turn the ball over on downs as Rodgers desperately tried to get a touchdown drive to get back in the game. But it was all for naught, with Harris’s touchdown sending the Acrisure Stadium crowd into a frenzy with victory sealed. As the Jets get back to the drawing board with a road trip to New England next week, Wilson appears to have earned himself at least another week after successfully leading his Steelers to a big win at home. Follow Fox News Digital’s sports coverage on X, and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.
